FAQ — Questions
Recently I noticed that all the spellings on here are the American version.

I have grown up with English as my first language and spelling them the British way.

Example

British - Colour (It has a red line under it as well :( )
American - Color

It gets very confusing for me since I don't know what is meant to be spelt different. Does this mean on Homework if a teacher only knows the American version and I spell it my way I will get points deducted because on most rules it says try get as many words correct.

Another example is

British - Bin
American - Trash can

Would this make a difference because words are also sometimes very different.

Thanks
-Lizzie

A lot of staff and members on here are American, hence the spellings, however you shouldn't ever lose any marks or be downgraded in any way for spelling things the correct British way, the thing about getting words right is in terms of spelling errors, not regional differences

In addition to what Delilah already said:

Most of us staffers are non-native speakers. I, personally, was taught British English in school and American English at university and use either or depending on the word. Some of our professors are in a similar position where they use the words they remember / feel comfortable with.

This has absolutely no effect on any content you produce, be it posts, errands, homework etc.

FAQ — Questions
Hello, I have a question about patronus.

I know first year or younger students cannot cast the patronus charm yet, but when we do. What animal would it be? Do we choose ourselves? Do moderators choose for us? If that's the case, what is the choice based on? Or is it random?

P.s. Thank you so much

It's only discovered in 6th year. But since no one is in 6th year I don't think they have though about it yet so it hasn't been planned

Apparently Prof. Griffith has a patronus, so maybe profs are allowed to have them. Maybe ask him if you have more questions?

All professors can have a Patronus if they wish so, though some chose to go without. The Patronus spell will be taught in 6th Year DADA, I can tell you that much. At the moment there is no system for it planned beyond letting people choose theirs, but this can be subject to change as it will be 2 more years until we get there.
