Clark William Baird-Carter wrote: 10 Dec 2022, 20:02 I'm rather curious as to why we don't have HTML coding onsite- like- for posts and all- but instead- BBCodes. HTML coding is just a few more steps than BBcoding- but it makes for a pretty template/post when someone is utilizing it.

I'm wondering if we could potentially test using the HTML coding thing if we have it- to see if we can use both BBcode and HTML onsite.
To my best understanding, this question has been asked and the answer is it can't because then it would be possible for users to mess up with the site's appearance, which is something we don't want to happen.

Having eyes, but not seeing beauty; having ears, but not hearing music; having minds, but not perceiving truth; having hearts that are never moved and therefore never set on fire - these are the things to fear.

Guys, there's private info and there's public info. What you see on profiles is public info. And your wallet (spendable) is private info. Not everyone wants to have their wallet public and available for everyone to see.

And showing total wealth for everyone, and wallet for yourself when you're looking at it is inconsistent.

If new players have issues with understanding, then there's an UX issue and maybe it can also be clarified on the mini-profile on the left, but it doesn't sound like an issue that has new users churn and leave the site :) Imho, it would make things look less clean.

Edward Foxe wrote: 6 Dec 2022, 22:12 I suggest to add an option to show the word count of a selection. And to also show the word count in the direct reply box below the last post of the thread.

The first is useful especially for homework because we have to copy the questions over, so I manually have to copy and paste the HW portion to word or so to get the word count.
The second is useful to just type the reply and know the wordcount without the need to open up the full 'reply' screen.
We have the wordcount stuff

It's just at the bottom of your corner, especially when quoting or previewing a text. It's alsoalways present when doing homework
I think Ed means a selected amount. Not all of the words

1) I just came across this old contest: viewtopic.php?p=150980&hilit=adventure#p150980 where the students were asked to write descriptions of the rooms. However, I saw that there are still lots of places without a description (like the specific classroom, the diagon alley and hogsmeade shops..). maybe we could repeat the contest for those areas?

2) another suggestion: add playable characters for various areas like the shops, who could be applied for like professors or so. these characters would inhabit the world and offer a possibility to RP with (like with the professor's office or librarian desk) in certain areas where this might be interesting. (e.g also adding a possibility to RP obtaining a wand at Ollivanders, which could also be possible for iNPCs). Maybe they could even offer something like 'quests' (a mix between errands and adventures).
if that's too much to supervise, it might be an idea for those students who graduate eventually.

Coo. I like both those ideas! No 2 especially could offer some enhanced mischief making opportunities!

The thing about #2 is that we already have player characters for the librarians and such. Shops will have a npc obviously- like Ollivanders and Magical Mengerie. But- as for librarians and professors- typically we cant godmod them- as they're actual players.

Imho, this site is primarily about RPing your way through Hogwarts and education for 7 years. Replacing NPCs like shopkeepers with real players will create a quick hack into adult characters, which is unfair to everyone else playing regular characters. Having it as a job for graduated characters is probably something possible, yeah. (Not going for the Minister of Magic, no).

Librarians and similar roles are staff roles, first of all, and bring a lot of responsibility in addition to having a specific task behind the roles (like grading of homework, for example). So, it wasn't created for RP reasons alone. Adding a lot of new roles would mean to expand the staff team as well.

Well, there is more to it than that. The adult (now) positions we offer come with actual work, responsibilities, obligations. There is no plan to just give out additional adult roles to users who happen to have writing styles I like. That would not be fair to the playerbase. If we end up needing additional staff positions to keep up with the playerbase that continues to grow (as it is still getting bigger) then this might change. I have several similar positions in my back pocket to deal with the needs of the community when we get too large for our present staff base of 16 prefects, 12 professors, 4 assistants, 4 HOH and myself plus a mentor group and 3 sport teams.

There is something about ambition, how it not only propels you but also defines you.

I understand the objections against more player characters. I just had thought it would be interesting. Maybe some day with people graduating then :)

I have another suggestion, which might be slightly easier to handle: Providing a detailed time schedule also for the other subjects. Astronomy has such a detailed schedule and there is the general schedule here. But for the other classes there is no schedule. For RP it would be nice to know, when the specific year or house had which class. Perhaps there are even free hours in between classes during the general schedule. Like first years have less subjects etc. However, without such detailed schedules, everyone could just make up a time or day a certain class is taking place, which would maybe even be different for two first years of the same house, etc.

If you go here: viewtopic.php?p=421362&hilit=Schedule#p421362 — there are a few explanations of the complexity that comes with establishing such detailed schedules. Astronomy has it because some of the classes have to be at night.
