Index Registration

Reminder: July 1 is fast-approaching.
  • If you plan to graduate, you will need to be registered in Index. Please have your application in by July 1 if you plan to register in time to graduate.
  • For those who have an application in and are still in need of edits, please promptly make those edits and message your Index Team member so that your registration process is completed on time so you can graduate with your friends.
  • Index is run by humans and therefore it does take us time to assess and give feedback on your application. If you have submitted your application BEFORE July 1, we will provide a grace-period for edits to be made and graduate your character when these edits have been accomplished.
  • This grade period is not indefinite and closes completely on August 1 regardless of when the application was last-updated. So, again, please be prompt with edits, please ask questions as appropriate and read out expectations to expedite the process.
  • For 7th years that have recently graduated and have created a new character. IF you plan on remaining a first year, please send to your Head of House a request to stay back the year if you plan on or have already registered yourself to Index so you can enjoy your true first year as a character if you so desire.
  • You can verify if your character is already a part of the official index here

Graduation, Advancement and Jobs
It's the end of the month, which means graduation! This is another reminder that this is a manual process - it may take the Heads of House a couple days to start/finish. Some houses may be graduated before/after others because of our schedules. Please do not panic when you see someone else has been moved up but you haven't. That said, you can apply for graduation stats and spells when your specific profile title says that you have yeared up.

During graduation, admin will also be removing any sports roles and house roles from our recently graduated adults. If any of these roles are still needed to complete a sport, please owl Hjørdis Jensen.

A graduation ceremony/end-of-year feast thread will be posted in the next few days (set IC on June 29th), so keep an eye out for that in the announcements! There will also be a special graduates-only lake thread set IC on June 30th!

This also means the advancement program will be open to all users. If your character has been held back and you wish for them to catch up to peers, please check out the details of the program [here]. This program closes again at the end of August 31st.

And finally, this means that adults can apply for jobs. From July 1st to August 31st, users with an adult character can apply for a job [here].

Disability Awareness Month

Disability Pride Month, which is celebrated every July, is an opportunity to honor the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. Why July? It marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion in society on July 26, 1990.

People with disabilities deserve to live full, self-determined lives, just like everyone else. Yet, discrimination persists.

"You Don’t Look Disabled”

Many disabilities are not visibly apparent. This can be challenging to recognize. In the United States, about 10%, or six million, of the 61 million adults with disabilities have invisible disabilities according to Access Living.

Often times, invisible conditions are overlooked in daily life and the celebration of Disability Pride Month; however, whether or not your disability is visible or invisible, your experience is valid. Disability is deeply stigmatized in our society, making it difficult for those with individual illnesses to be open about their needs and accommodations. A major hurdle for many people with invisible disabilities is overcoming the myth that unseen conditions are “fake.” Disability is rooted in stereotypes, including looking the part of being sick. By having an invisible disability, it can be uncomfortable and difficult to ask for and receive accommodations without feeling like you have to prove your illness.

In 2016, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower was founded to create a universal symbol for invisible disabilities and establish a network of invisible illness-friendly businesses, institutions, and transportation. By wearing a sunflower, an individual can discreetly and voluntarily disclose a hidden disability, alerting employees at these various involved institutions that that individual may require more time, assistance, or a special accommodation. This can ease the anxiety of disclosing your hidden health condition while still ensuring that your needs are met with empathy and understanding.

Invisible disabilities can be:
  • Physical
  • Mental
  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Respiratory
Examples of invisible disabilities include:
  • Diabetes
  • Autoimmune Disorders (Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Psoriatic Arthritis)
  • Gynecological Disorders (Endometriosis)
  • Chronic Migraine Disorder and other neurological conditions
  • Cardiac Conditions
Image

Disability Pride Month has a flag, rich with symbolism. Each color stripe has a meaning:
  • Red - physical disabilities
  • Gold - neurodiversity
  • White - invisible disabilities and disabilities that have not yet been diagnosed
  • Blue - emotional and psychiatric disabilities, including mental illness, anxiety, and depression
  • Green - sensory disabilities, including deafness, blindness, lack of smell, lack of taste, auditory processing disorder, and all other sensory disabilities.
You will notice the background is a faded black shade. This represents mourning for victims of ableist violence and abuse.

“This is the dialectic—there is a very short distance between high art and trash, and trash that contains an element of craziness is by this very quality nearer to art.” - Douglas Sirk
