The penalty lap was tormenting for Althea. Not only did the mortification of having been caught cheating "very obviously" because of her sheer ignorance of Quidditch rules still burn through her veins and made her feel guilty for wasting a precious round that could have been spent closing the distance between her and the snitch, but the paranoia of knowing she had made an enemy of the opponent seeker who was quite formidable in her own right, and had essentially slapped a target on her own back for the opponent team by landing herself a penalty only served to scatter her attention from the snitch. Her eyes flitted around her surroundings anxiously as her teammate, Maisie, zipped past her in a bid to block an opponent's quaffle passes. The consecutive successes of her teammate only deepened her shame for her inadequacies. It was getting harder to keep her eyes on the whizzing flash of gold in the pitch, and Althea braced for another resounding failure after this lap was over-

The loud and passionate cheer of her teammates on the bench sent a bolt of clarifying awareness through her consciousness. It snapped her thoughts back into a functioning stream, charged by adrenaline. That's right, she had no time to dwaddle. She had a job to do, and she would be damned if she did not give her all for the rest of the game because of a stupid penalty lap. She sucked in a breath of cold air and swept her loose fringe aside, adjusting her grip on her broom. She needed to focus. Finishing her penalty lap with a swift turn of her broom, the Hufflepuff geared up for the game's approaching climax.

Honeyed hair spilled in the december air as a familiar moonchild split the skies in half, anger still melting her veins as though burning iron had been coursing through her blood. As a result of the interruption that had previously occurred, she had lost her advance over the chase of the flickering snitch, and was therefore forced to accelerate until the edges of her vision started to blur.

Though the raven had begun to lose some faith in her ability to overpass this obstacle, cheers and encouragements rising from the benched players managed to lit her spark once again, and a smile curved her frostbitten lips, and a newfound determination had enraptured her heart.

Upon glancing at the remaining of the terrain, she suddenly noticed every last one of their chasers had deserted, either by literally attempting to jump on someone — the redhead was perhaps more fiery than she had imagined — or by remaining attached to their previous saviour. Lit by a sudden instinct, Elena plunged for the quaffle, whilst keeping an eye on the snitch. If she was able to score a goal during this opportunity, they perhaps they might—

And that was without taking into account the literal wall that was the opposite keeper. Not one. Not one of her attempt scored. Are we serious ? Fate had appeared to plainly laugh at her face, and she decided to accept this outcome rather than swallowing the sour bile rising from her stomach. "Decidedly," she laughed, lightly bowing her chin towards the brunette, "that was a silly idea."

Then again, her job was to capture the golden ball attempting to escape. Leaving the quaffle to chasers, the moon-eyed seeker rose once again, determined to catch the little devil.

Well I didn't fall, so that's a plus. Graci shook her head slightly, as though shaking off her previous rude demeanor. "Thank you... Charlotte, right?" Graci did not know this girl's name, only half a guess, really. She had only breifly been aquatinted with his temporary team, and names had always been a little iffy. Faces, sure, but not really names.

It was odd, sharing a broom with another person. It made one much more hesitant to do anything, especially when it wasn't the broom you were using already. I guess I'll just have to follow her lead. Team sports were usually one of her strong suits, but this felt a little too team-y. No longer could she simply fly and do her own thing. Good bye, freedom.

Eleation was back, however, once she had successfully cheated. It was rather surprising the sharp-eyed first year hadn't caught it.Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh. Graci was no goody-two-shoes, but she also was hardly a delinquent. A lovely shade of gray.

Her heart was still pounding like a marching band full of snare drums from her almost-fall. While she knew she wouldn't have sustained permanent injuries if any, it was still nice to not be completely useless. Though, still less helpful than she could have been.

The inaction for one whole round was new to Vera. She'd witnessed people do that, what with her duels and then a few people freezing up in that unofficial race she did a while back. But that was different. Duelling had no penalty laps, and it seemed racing didn't either. Any inaction was stage fright. This? This was both boring and terrifying.

Every second she went around the pitch was another second wasted on not blocking quaffles (not that there were any coming their way, but you know), helping out her teammates, and truly appreciating the game. Not that Vera regretted trying to blatch Maisie, of course. Even if it failed, it was worth knowing she had a decent enough aim to almost make it. But being on a penalty lap and unable to do anything but fly around meant their team was severely limited on manpower, and that was the frightening part.

She listened to Livia's calls as Cecilia was caught—a bummer considering how well she'd been doing even with Maisie blocking all her quaffle scores. Not only that, Cecilia survived a bludger to the side. Vera's jaw dropped. How could anyone survive that? Those had to have hurt, no?

Zephyr was watching his teammates for a while now. He saw the seeker pushed herself harder after losing ground with the Snitch, how she sped up despite her frustration burning under her skin. The other one try for the Quaffle only to be stopped again and again by the opposing keeper, seeing the multiple failed attempts, his jaw tightened, sometimes trying many times was not enough, unfortunately.

He scanned the pitch, eyes moving constantly. Two of their teammates were still sharing a broom. Another one was heading for a penalty lap and the other was circling, forced into inaction. He paid attention to all of it. It was a side of him who was always in watch mode. It’s his old habit. On the farm, you always kept a close watch if something goes wrong, then you will need to get into it before it gets worse.

He was busy strategizing with Aodhan when his name was called to step in and it took him a beat to realize what was happening. He was being asked to replace someone as a chaser. Upon realising that, his stomach flipped. He left his seat immediately, heart pounding, and his fingers tightening around his broom handle. This is it. He swallowed and mounted his broom, but reminded himself not to rush. Don’t panic.

He kicked off the ground and rose into the air to join the game, officially. The drizzle hit his face but jade eyes stayed alert, both for the Quaffle and for his teammates. For someone who might need his help.

Amelia’s mouth turned down at the edges, her eyes narrowing slightly. Disappointment. That was Amelia’s remaining feeling at her lack of success at scoring. A tiny pang of guilt at not being able to carry her team into a marvelous win was followed by the overcoming urge to do more. A bundle of frustration which was kindled inside Amelia, hissed inside her, but she consoled it with a few large, shaky breathes. Considering it was her first match and all, perhaps she was doing well. At least that was what she forced herself to think, in order to not completely give up.

Instead of once more turning to the heated competition of a quaffle grab, Amelia changed tact. The churning in her stomach had become more emphasized, and the need to do something that might do some more good became stronger. Amelia soured through the sky on her broom elegantly, watching the game unfold below.

Save. Anyone who needed it. That would be her job. It wasn't the need to be a hero, for that certainly wasn’t in Amelia’s character, it was the choice to do nothing or potentially do something that made Amelia choose such an action. Eyes flashing alertly across the pitch, she watched the game with intense focus. It seemed that the girl, Elena, was having no more success than Amelia had had of recent. Somehow, as wrong as it might me, that consoled her disappointment. The calls of the audience echoed in Amelia’s ears as she continued to look at the game, watching as the players moved to each achieve whatever goal they had in mind.

It took a moment too long for Amelia to relapse with another sting of disappointment, that her actions had had no impact hit on the game. She had been simply sitting on her broom without any success. This game really wasn’t going great for her. No. I can’t think like that. Positivity. Positivity. Positivity. The girl chanted in her head, warding away any thoughts that might make her loose hope. She hadn’t let her team down yet. There was still a chance. Plus, if she had been forced to save someone, that meant someone needed saving, so perhaps it was good?

Yet another one of his disciples was called to the pitch, and Aodhan watched with crossed arms and an overly pleased smile on his face. Not only that, but his first protégé was wrapping up her penalty lap with little to no projectiles sent her way. A blessing, really, considering his own experience getting targeted after doing a foul. He supposed the main difference was his place as a seeker... and the fact that Slytherins were, apparently, incredibly vindictive people. Yes, it was really good their opponents were far more relaxed in comparison.

Anyway, if all went well, his impromptu teachings would shine through and propel his team to victory. Though, things "going well" seemed very up in the air this match, as he bore witness to various misses, strange enemy inaction, and blocked quaffles. He even winced upon spotting one of their chasers get hit with a bludger, its mark true but not damaging enough to take them out of the sky. Good! That'd be pretty sucky otherwise. Or maybe it was still sucky, since they got hit and all that.

With his view of the match, he could tell morale could very easily swing down into the dumps. So, being the amazing team player (and part teacher, apparently) that he was, Aodhan tried shouting some real words of encouragement. It was specifically meant for one of their beaters, who seemed like a first year. Or, no, that didn't seem right... A second year? He couldn't exactly tell when he didn't pay much attention to his classmates. Regardless, he was cheering like it was his last day on earth.

"Hit them so hard they pee their pants!" he had exclaimed, limbs flailing around for emphasis. "Y'know, cause if they pee, then they'll definitely be out of the match! To change their pants and stuff!" Truly inspiring stuff, if he had to say so himself.

But maybe the adrenaline was too high, because somehow, despite his booming and grating voice, his words went... in one ear and out the other. Or ignored? Either way, it had the boy pouting. Especially when the beater had missed their mark, because of course they did. Maybe if they had just listened to his rousing words...

A sudden impact to Cecilia’s side knocked the air out of her lungs. By some miracle, she remained on her broom and gripped the shaft tightly as adrenaline began racing through her body. After steading herself, the young fox spoke up.

“Well, that was rather unusual,” she remarked, half-surprised that she was still conscious after that hit. Her brows furrowed, for she could not understand why she was targeted after so many failed attempts to score. Still, she could not complain about how fate decided that it was not time for her to join her friend in the hospital wing.

The pain seemed like a minor issue in comparison to her dilemma. Cecilia had grown tired of not being able to aid her team. Quite frankly, she was sick of grappling for the red ball only to fail at scoring. Perhaps it was time to turn away from the quaffle.

She was still frustrated after Tatiana’s blatching and Elena being snitch blocked. Cecilia decided that if they could play dirty, so could she. The young fox had nothing against Avery, but the beater had flown into her line of sight as the thought came to mind. Without giving the idea much thought, she flew towards the older girl and tried to swerve into her.

All she could do was scoff derisively at her failed attempt before beginning her penalty lap. This would not do at all.

Time: 10pm

Lily felt her hands get a bit numb after clapping and cheering for her teammates. She felt a bit tired and exhausted and wanted to go on the pitch and have a go at the round. But here she was, still sitting at the bench and cheering for her teammates. She did not hate her job, but she did not want to just sit at the bench. She was already angry at Tatiana's fall, and now Elena was blocked from getting the snitch

She decided to cheer for Sabrina this time, her team's beater. She had seen her a few times in the corridor, and she always seemed polite. She was also a good player. "WOOOO!!!!!!!! Come on, Sabrina! You can do it!", she screamed. "Take a win for us, would you?", she said, while giving her a thumbs up. Some of the people looked over at her side, maybe wondering what she was doing. But did she care? Not at all.

She starts tapping her hands lightly on the bench. It took her a long time to realize that it was a tune her grandmother used to like. She gulped down the lump that formed in her throat and realized that it was syncing with the game. She smiled a bit, and continued cheering.

The realization dawned on Geneva that even when she tried to engage with the game, her presence on the team was superfluous. Not only was her distraction maneuver ineffective, but Elena didn’t even seem to notice she was there. It was pitiful.

What was certainly not pitiful, however, was Maisie’s goal-keeping. Geneva was shocked at how effortlessly the second-year deflected every single shot. Caught up in the excitement of the saves, she screamed “Yes, Maisie!” But the wind was howling so hard in Geneva’s ears, she doubted if the keeper had heard her.

Once the momentary rush had died down, Geneva pivoted back to her original task: saving falling players. But since there weren’t currently any players falling, she was at a loss for what to do. The Quaffle was out of her reach now, and she certainly wasn’t fast enough to get in on that action. For the time being, she settled on orbiting the pitch, keeping her eye on her teammates and the Quaffle.

She had thought, before the match had started, that Quidditch might be like dancing, somehow. But so far, her agility in the studio didn’t seem to affect her performance on the pitch. She hoped she’d have a chance to show her mettle before the game was up.
