The match’s deadline was quickly approaching and Pyxis wondered if it was the nerves of seeing time run out that spurred three of the five remaining duellists on to throw more fire at their opponents. Aislin and Minnie aimed at each other, the former focusing on the only badger to not be surrounded by the Nebulus fog. However, the lack of a sight barrier did not matter as Minnie was far too adept at avoiding Aislin’s flames. And Minnie would once again go for her trademark Incendio Duo, but it seemed like casting the same spell over and over again was catching up with her. The flames, instead of shooting out at Aislin, sputtered back at her and the front of her robes caught fire.

Maisie tried her hand at another difficult spell. This time, it was a spell that could paralyze Costanza, taking the badger out of commission for the last few seconds of the duel. But, just like her previous cast, this one didn’t take. The magic at the tip of her wand fizzled and went out, allowing the sickly badger in the fog to have her last round. The other badger in the fog was unlucky last time as her cast was just too impeded. Luck was on her side this time though as her second attempt at the Fire-Making Spell managed to catch the still-burning Aislin. It was enough to knock her to the piste.

“Stop!” Pyxis called, holding a hand up just after the presence of the thick fog was removed by Costanza. Finally having a clear view of the whole piste again, he waved his wand at Aislin to remove the last bit of flames from her and waited until she was removed from the piste to speak once more. “Alright, your time is almost up so make it count. Resume!” With one person left on the Ravenclaw side, he knew it was unlikely that a dent could be put into the badgers, but with the possibilities of casting failures and a still-rumbling cloud above them, there was a minute chance.

There were no words that came to mind as she watched Aislin do down, despite being so brave and frankly, so good, for her first match. Maisie was sure she'd go and visit her in the hospital wing soon enough. Hopefully, she'd heal quickly.

Meanwhile, everything looked exactly as it did every single time she was up here.

The Muggle Condition | Perfectionist

Having had enough of the blasted fog, Costanza elected to get rid of it. As the swirling smoke died down, she caught sight of both Minnie and Alina casting Fire-Making Spells. Minnie's didn't leave their side of the piste, but Alina managed to tag Aislin, taking down another one for the badgers.

Costanza winced as she watched Aislin be removed from the battlefield. A part of her thought raining fiery hell upon the first year was overkill. Minnie's flames from a previous spell were obviously enough to take her down before the duel ended. But as the badger surveyed the state of the piste and the clock on the wall, she understood why it was done. Of the birds, only one was standing, which meant that there would be only one spell to worry about in the final moments.

"Christ Gemmell, I hope I never see your face for the rest of the year," Costanza huffed at the girl she barely knew. "You make it harder and harder every time." It was always a hard fight against Maisie and whoever she was teamed up with, but this one was the most difficult. She was even casting spells that Costanza hadn't even heard of. It was a reminder for the badger to hit the books.

But as hard as the opposing side fought, Costanza knew it was unlikely Maisie could win it for them. She thought about throwing up a middle finger to the person in the crowd who was heckling her earlier on. They had conveniently gone quiet after the badgers took the upper hand. In the end though, she decided against it. Minnie had almost caught on fire by her own spell and the cloud was still present. It wasn't over yet.

It was her fault that Aislin hit the piste.
Her wand.
Her aim.
Her fault.
Alina twirls her wand in her hand once again in anxiety. She watched as the younger girl was helped from the dueling stage. They had gone easy on her too, or easy-ish. Nothing was targeted at her this round. For that, even, Alina felt worse. She's check on her... well if the other girl was okay with it. After the match.

And despite the bogies, Costanza seemed on top of the world. The taunting seemed a bit much. Maisie was alone... and she hadn't said anything to provoke that sort of comeback. There wasn't really a need to rub any more salt in the wound.

Alina continued to spin her wand in her hand. Things had started out so hopeless. She thought she would be out first. She had the lowest stamina, the least amount of spells under her belt, the only muggle-born out of the group, she was new, no strategy, no training, nothing. She got her wand, introduced to this world, eight months ago. The probability she would have made it this far was... low. Incredibly low. Alina expected to be knocked on her butt, and not that she hadn't, but she got back up. She had made it this far, and that felt good. The excitement was blended with anxiety as they still had one last round to go. It's possible for things to all go south, very quickly. It's always possible.

The ending was obvious, but there were still ways in which things could go wrong for the Hufflepuffs. Pyxis glanced at the cloud one last time, wondering if it would avenge its caster by striking all three badgers in the final moments of the duel. Ravenclaw would have no such luck as nothing of the sort happened.

Maisie, not wanting to rely on luck anymore, decided to not end up on a cot in the Hospital Wing. She had a plan to visit her first year teammates while they were recovering, and she couldn’t do that if she was ailing alongside them. With quicker feet than Pyxis had ever seen, she avoided another set of fire spells from Minnie and Alina. The former was unperturbed by her mishap last round and the latter wanted to recreate the magic, but neither could keep up with the eagle’s dodging. Costanza, on the other hand, chose another support spell to cast, healing Alina once more. The nauseous feeling in her stomach became overwhelming for a moment, causing the badger to take pause. But it didn’t matter, because the duel was over.

“Time!” Pyxis called, watching as the clock finally ticked down. He motioned to the three still-standing Hufflepuffs. “It was a long fight, but the Blazing Badgers have emerged victorious! Congratulations to you three and well done.” He turned back to the crowd just as his stomach rumbled. “We’re breaking for lunch, but more duels are to come after the hour, so keep up that house spirit!”
