Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10
Again her spell would land, the fog beginning to clear just enough for her to see it land its mark. But not before her adversary had managed to reverse some of the damage she had sustained. Lips drew to a line as her jaw clenched. She just couldn't quite seem to finish him off. Why wouldn't he just fall. If she could only remove him from the equation, she might be able to stand a chance in a face off against the white witch.
She couldn't dwell long, however. Even a moment's lapse in concentration could spell her own downfall, and with her slate gaze shifting vigilantly between each of the Ravenclaw's to keep each of their movements in sight, she couldn't spare that distraction.
If only it were just the two birds... Although the fog may have finally dissipated, the stage once again clear, the clouds overhead had not. They roiled angrily, gray and black looming overhead foreshadowing that which was to come. Had she been able to spare a moment, Evelynn would have sent it back in the eagles' direction. But she had not. The lioness could dodge and track her targets all she wanted, but even she could possibly move swiftly enough to avoid a strike of lightning she didn't know was coming. One second, she was formulating her next move; the next, all thought had been replaced with white hot pain.
Not even a scream would rip itself from her lips. Victim to the shock, every muscle along its route would clench, denying her breath or movement in that split second. And when it found its exit point, her legs buckled underneath her, dropping her to a knee in quite undignified fashion. It might not have had the same fatal impact of a true bolt of lightning, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt. Muscles aches like nothing she'd felt before, but it was the continued searing that really stoked the growing panic. At some point, her robes had caught flame.
But as awareness returned to her and she reoriented to the moment, it was the threat of the two in front that drew her action. Reflexive self-preservation fueled her then as she snatched up the wand that had clattered to the stage. It was fight or flight, and Evelynn wasn't one to flee.

Thomas looked exhausted, as he continued to heal himself - he called it a coward's tactic, but Jake knew what it was like to be a coward and he was pretty sure that Thomas was handling himself a lot better than HE would after that many knockback jinxes. Actually, Jake was kinda amazed that after all he'd been through he was still standing and able to keep healing himself. That had to count for something, right? (Thomas didn't make any move to break from that strategy now, as the Ravenclaw boy would heal himself once more, finally feeling some strength returning)
But though Thomas had been through a lot, right now Jake was a lot more worried about Evelynn. Even after all he'd seen from Piérre, it all got washed out of his head when he saw what was happening to the Gryffindor girl. The lightning had struck, and Evelynn had gone down to her knees. Her eyes were dazed. She couldn't even keep hold of her wand, which clattered to the ground beside her. Her robes had lit on fire, from Aida's spell. For a few moments Jake couldn't even move - it had been so sudden, violent, loud - but he shook himself out of his own daze, moving his head left and right. The Hufflepuff was ready to call it off right there - he was SURE he was going to have to, and as much as he was worried he was almost relieved. This had to stop. She was beaten. Who could come back from being struck by lightning?
But he should have known better than to expect a Gryffindor to give up.
Just as Jake was about to raise his hand and pronounce her defeated, the girl's eyes narrowed with defiance. Her arm jutted to the side and her fingers clasped her wand, and in a flash she performed a familiar motion that by now must have been second nature to her. Somehow, some way, a massive gust of wind shot forward - a wind jinx that jetted off in two directions towards both Ravenclaws at the same time!!
But how??
Jake gasped at the fighting spirit of the Gryffindor. He didn't know if it was toughness or instinct, but she was fighting on, defiant to the end. Maybe she really COULD do it.
But anybody rooting for Gryffindor house would have their hearts sink - because while Evelynn's heart was full with determination, her body was weakened, her arm stunned, and the Ravenclaws didn't have to step too far out of the way to dodge the gusts which were just a little off-target. And from her knees, still searing with pain, Evelynn had no way of dodging the fire spell sent once again by Aida, hitting its mark perfectly.
Jake cringed, looking at the time. He fidgeted back and forth. He could stop this soon. She HAD to have had enough, right? But what if she didn't? Was she going to keep fighting? How much more could she take? Any minute now...he could say time is up and she could go to the hospital wing.
He really REALLY hoped that whole thing about lightning never striking the same place twice was the truth.

Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10

For all their past frustrations, maybe Aida really was getting better at this? With only one round remaining, it seemed that nothing less than divine intervention could turn around the Ravenclaws’ lead. Still, it would feel so much better if they could actually end the match properly without having to rely on a time-out. Just maybe, could they make that kind of satisfying ending for the match? Squeezing their beloved old wand, Aida tried to focus on bringing things to a clean close.

Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10
There was an undeniable, grim satisfaction that came with the duel’s clock running down. It wasn’t often that Thomas found himself still standing this late in the game, his admittedly weaker disposition often leading him to be knocked off of his feet early on in the duel. Perhaps, by some grace of god, Tom was getting a little better at this dueling nonsense after all this time… More accurately, he was only growing more stubborn.

Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10
As much as she hated to admit it, Evelynn knew that she wasn't going to be able to last much longer. Her movements were slowing, and the pain was beginning to cloud her thoughts. The effort to grit her way through it made enunciation difficult, and her muscles were beginning to rebel against her, defying her commands to move. She was practically a sitting duck like this. Thus far, Baines had been able to refresh himself at a rate faster than she could damage, and she had hardly been able to get a scratch on the white-haired one. This match may have been how she suspected it would result; but it was not at all how she had hoped. Evidently, a great deal of work lay ahead of her.

Jake knew that the defiant Evelynn was going to go out fighting, and she did. The fire was eating away at her robes, and yet she didn't drop her wand - not again. She held firm and shot a knockback jinx in the direction of the Ravenclaws, firing right in their direction. The Ravenclaws had the same thought. Three knockback jinxes sailed at once - all flying across the platform, as Jake antsily fidgeted and waited for the clock to run out. Any minute now...any minute.
Evelynn was able to duck away, but whether that was agility or exhaustion was anybody's guess. Her spell hit its mark, making Aida take a step back, but when the clock mercifully ran out Jake didn't have to think twice about what to do next.
"That's it, stop stop stop stop stop!!" Jake shouted, waving his arms, and rushing forward. He looked at Evelynn with worry - if she was still fighting she HAD to be ok, right? He really hoped so.
"That's the end, Ravenclaws win!" he shouted. Usually it took him forever to decide a winner, too worried about whether the other team was going to be angry if he chose wrong. But this time the winner was obvious. One Gryffindor taken to the hospital wing. The other electrified and burning. Luckily the fire had gone out before Jake could even try to extinguish it. He was just happy this had stopped before Evelynn could be hurt more. She was brave, and she was strong, but she wasn't invincible, and it was hard seeing somebody struck by lightning. He hoped Thomas was going to be ok too.
Then there was Piérre... Now that the duel had stopped, and Evelynn was being tended to, Jake remembered what he had seen, what he'd HEARD. What had gotten into the boy? He looked uneasily towards where the Gryffindor had been carried away earlier, and wondered if he should go check on him. Either way at least this was all over.
"Um, congratulations everyone. Is everyone ok?" he said, looking at the winning team, and back at the Gryffindor girl. He was going to be thinking about THIS one for a while...
Ravenclaws Win!!!!
