2021, Stage 1 Ravenclaw vs Gryffindor: Match 4

Honestly, it was cruel to keep the girl on her feet at this point! Let her have a nice nap in the infirmary! Pericles would be sending her a basket later to congratulate her on her first duel, even if he had a hand in her defeat. With a jut of his wand towards Katrina, he incanted firmly "Expelliarmus. Quite enough of that." The persistent healer's wand made a satisfying clatter as it struck the ground. Back towards Adeline and- he found himself at the end of her wand. With a (nat 20) swift, graceful motion, the duellist spun on the heel of his boot, pivoting clean out of the way. When he heard those words, Peri promptly returned Tom's look, though his was certain, smiling, touched by the sentiment. "I don't mind," he reassured faintly. Whether he was talking about being called Tom's friend, or being bludgeoned, was up in the air.

They had almost swung the duel around in their favor. Almost made it work. But then Adeline was doused in flames again. Katrina clenched her teeth, wishing just this time her opponents would actually bloody miss for once.

On her way to send an extinguishing spell Adeline’s way, her wand flew out of her hand. “Are you bloody kidding me?” Katrina growled, hardly loud enough to be heard.

“I’m sorry Adeline. I’ll try to win it for us,” Katrina said quietly to her partner, although the chances of that were realistically slipping.

At this point, destiny was just being cruel towards the poor Adeline. While Katrina was looking for her wand, and as she managed to locate it, Adeline tried her last attempt at dealing some damage to Thomas, and help her partner survive against the two Ravenclaw. But she must have been so exhausted, her body and mind on the brink of falling unconscious, that the spell horribly backfired, and the Incendio hit her instead of Thomas.

The damage caused by her own spell would have been enough to knock her unconscious, but again the timing of it, together with Pericles' and Thomas' spell made the moment even more dramatic. Almost in perfect coordination, Thomas and Pericles' spells hit Adeline together; the strong jolt of wind, mixed with the incredibly powerful Flipendo, sent Adeline to the back of the platform, and the poor girl fell unconscious.

"Everybody, stop!" Lydia yelled as she jumped up onto the platform; she waited until Adeline was safely taken away from the duel, and she hoped that, once she was in the hospital wing, the pain would not be too much. Even if she fell unconscious, she still put up a really good fight. "Okay, you can continue!" Lydia restarted the duel, and wondered what would happen next.

Spectator Thread

He hadn't realized how immense his tension had grown until the minute an opponent fell. As soon as Lydia called for a pause, Pericles released the breath he'd been holding, dropping the poised stance for slumped shoulders. He took advantage of the moment to wipe a trace of sweat from his brow and catch his breath. Bittersweet relief: the wounded witch was being carted off to get those cruel wounds tended to. Peri took on an expression of grim resolve before they resumed, reflecting on how anxiety-inducing it had been in the past to carry on without one's partner. A firm, good luck nod to Katrina, and he readied his wand once again.

Even the unsympathetic Thomas could manage something of a remorseful wince as Adeline was knocked down for the count thrice over. To add insult to injury, his Flipendo was flawless, on its own it would have probably knocked most people off their feet. Still, a duel was no time for feelings aside from triumph, so just as quickly as Tom’s disposition shifted to guilt, it soon shifted to a smug sort of grin.

One down, one to go. The young wizard could taste victory on the horizon, but he tried to stay focused. "Let’s pack up," Thomas commented, more to himself rather than anyone else. The boy certainly had a habit of talking to no one in particular, one of his many peculiar quirks.

In the few minutes from when Katrina’s wand shot out of hand, Adeline was collapsing on the dueling pedestal floor. ‘I’m sorry’ Katrina whispered as the moderator called for the temporary cease fire so Adeline could be taken off to the Hospital Wing.

The duel was put back in motion and Katrina with it. She needed her wand back, needed to refocus, and needed something short of a miracle so she could pull this duel around and win for her teammate.

Everything around Adeline slowed, as if she were a third party watching the match unfold in slow motion. Her arm shaking with every movement, Addie raised her wand, ready to send some fire of her own back at that irritating prick across the stage. But as her eyes found her target, the small voice inside of her, which had pushed her to keep getting back up and fighting her hardest, was no longer there.

From the opposing side, two spells barrelled toward her, two unrelenting forces that she was helpless to stop.

“Incen-” she tried to muster, her eyes blurring over with tears once more. In her moment of hesitation, sparks burst from Adeline’s wand, backfiring onto her and furthering the flames which already had a hold of her clothing.

The force of her own misfire in combination with the attacks from both of the Ravenclaw boys striking her simultaneously exploded before her, knocking her backwards.

There on the ground, pathetic and weak, Addie begged her muscles to allow her to rise and continue the fight.

Get up, get up, get up, her mind pleaded as the darkness crept further and further into her vision.

And with that, Addie’s surroundings faded to black.

Probably shocked by Adeline's unlucky demise, Katrina seemed to be frozen in place, her wand lying forgotten onto the floor. Of course, both Pericles and Thomas didn't lose this occasion, and as their spells were both directed towards the Gryffindor girl.

While Pericles showed once again his skills as a duellist, with his Wind Jinx hitting Katrina and sending her hair flying in all the directions, Thomas seemed to run out of luck. His well cast Incendio Duo didn't exactly go in the direction he had intended: instead, for some kind of reason, his aim got lost during the cast, the spell almost hit his teammate. Lucky for them, Pericles was quick on his feet, and he managed to avoid any harm.

Spectator Thread

While empathy ran its course, the pity would pass. Pericles' determination manifested as a stony expression. His "Ventus!" was without pause, honed by focus, willpower conjuring a tunnel of wind which battered and howled. Before he could admire his handiwork, the corner of his eye caught the eerily familiar sight of a crackling Incendio. He rapidly moved backwards, sweeping steps carrying him out of its path, and a wide-eyed look darted to his partner. "It's alright, Tom," he called quickly, trying to get through to his fellow eagle before he could be distracted by any measure of guilt or frustration.
"This match is nearly ours. Just don't get too excited!"

"Agh— so sorry!" Thomas called out to Pericles, embarrassment clear as day on his face. Perhaps his excitement had gotten the better of him in this exchange, the taste off victory so tantalizingly close. "Right, yeah, focus… I can’t lose sight of strategy now," he chastised himself, passion was one thing but jeopardizing their win was quite another. His head had to remain cleanly fastened to his shoulders if he wanted to actually win.
