Suggestion for the Special Abilities and Magical Races thread!
A player messaged me wondering why my Animagus group said Parseltongues couldn't become animagi when they are technically humans. I explained it was a matter of system balancing, taking on some unique races/abilities makes others inaccessible. However, going through the section on Parseltongues in that thread, as well as the Animagi [Lore] thread, this isn't mentioned.
My suggestion is adding a "disclaimer" section to races and abilities, specifically stating which abilities become inaccessible to a character as a result of taking it. IE at the end of each Race's section, stating something to the effect of "Becoming a Parsel makes your character ineligible for the following abilities: X Y Z"

Changed the following:
Prerequisite: 5th year or later; must be full human; cannot also gain the Occlumency Ability.
to
Prerequisite: 5th year or later; cannot be a Parselmouth, Metamorphmagus, part-Veela, part-Giant, part-Goblin, Dhampir, Seer, or a Werewolf. You must be fully human. Cannot also gain the Occlumency Ability.
Did the same with Occulmency Ability
____
No changes made to the top of the ability post:
The ability system is a system where each year a student either gains a skill associated with their race if they are a specialty race every other year alternating with picking a skill from the ability list OR if they are a normal human (that is not a Metamorphmagus, Parselmouth or Seer) they get to pick a skill every year.
Added the same disclaimer to non-human enthusiast because it also said fully human
No changes to the following statement in abilities:
Part-Human is considered to be a race with non-Human ancestry (and, mechanically, those having Special Traits as well):
Adding also the clarification of what a part human is to the top of abilities.

Adding the following to each of the special races and making sure that the language is consistent about 'part human' (it was)"
Non-Human Enthusiast
Occlumency
Animagus
The following added for Dhampires, Werewolves:
Calming Presence
For additional clarity also writing the following:
What are Special Races?

What Abilities can a "Special Race" or a not "fully human" player NOT take?Anything that is not a "full human" option. This would include "special abilities" such as Parselmouths and Seers who are "technically" human, cursed humans such as Lycanthropes as well as those with non-human ancestry such as Dhampirs, part-Veelas, part-Giants and part-Goblins. There is a reduced end cap and reducing starting stat for these characters as well as restrictions regarding certain abilities that they cannot take. Anything that restricts "fully human" restricts these characters.
Non-Human Enthusiast
Occlumency
Animagus
Lycanthropes (werewolves) and Dhampirs also cannot take Calming Presence

Can I suggest a new ability, or does that remain with the prefects?

I can assume you can, and as always please correct me if I’m wrong. Perhaps if you want an ability added perhaps have some benefits/details to it so it’s not just the “title” of the ability you want added. Now I am thinking that the abilities are going by the books.Dexter Ragsdill wrote: 17 Jun 2022, 02:37 Can I suggest a new ability, or does that remain with the prefects?

ability suggestions, this are just suggestions.
1. a combination of apparition 1 and advanced apparition into just one ability.
while maintaining the same/current technicals of debuffs and buffs of the two separate abilities. this will allow more freedom in rp without having to use the last 2 ability slots (for full-humans). also allows for part human to be able to apparate multiple should they take it, as its not possible for them to acquire the advanced apparition otherwise.
2. combination of wandless and nonverbal ability.
Restriction for wandless: Wisdom of at least 20 or Nonverbal Magic | Restriction for non-verbal: Must either have wandless magic or be at least Fifth Year.
It just seems almost impossible to acquire both abilities and especially so for part human who only have 3-4 free ability slots and less stats. Combinationn of the same buffs and debuffs of both abilities.
3. make spell 'accio' an ability. my suggestion - it allows for disarming of an object/wand but also acquiring said object that possibly requires a physical roll to seize said object back. allows for the summoning of an object that is not in direct sight. this is also to put limits on the extent of the spell as the spell usage across the books and movies is quite OP as listed on 'Known uses' in wiki.

4. remove poison resistance.
how a 13-year-old might have been 'exposed' to various potions/poisons to the extent they develop a resistance can potentially be unethical.
5. remove occulumency or add a legilimency ability.

Okay, here's my suggestion:
What if there was an ability that can make someone almost like a human beast? Such as whenever their extremely angry, pressured, or stressed, they just lose theirself for a moment; they become chaotic for a short period. An absolute rage. They even strike if they feel it's necessary. But it can't happen to anyone, only people that get angry easily.

Hm, that sounds a lot like being a werewolf though to me.Dexter Ragsdill wrote: 17 Jun 2022, 13:39 Okay, here's my suggestion:

This is the only one I don't agree with because I like how it's just a spell because it IS a spell. Even though it might seem OP in the movies/books, the site itself has some differences compared to movies/books. HiO's Accio doesn't seem that powerful on the site and people rarely use it anyway except for minor things. Imo I don't think spells should be abilities. As I consider them to be spells not abilities. Much like how I think Parselmouth is a rare talent/ability (like how it's listed) and not a race (although it's considered a race for some reason). So I think Accio should remain just a spell.Aurelia Notrésvace wrote: 17 Jun 2022, 07:183. make spell 'accio' an ability. my suggestion - it allows for disarming of an object/wand but also acquiring said object that possibly requires a physical roll to seize said object back. allows for the summoning of an object that is not in direct sight. this is also to put limits on the extent of the spell as the spell usage across the books and movies is quite OP as listed on 'Known uses' in wiki.
Speaking of which, is Accio a spell that is learned through homework? Or is it just a spell that everyone can use automatically? Ah okay it's learned through Charms4 homework in 3rd year. So I've never used it before. I can't wait to use it though I think it'll be fun to rp. Therefore, please don't consider making Accio an ability because since I messed up and Kim is a PM I only get 3 abilities and I need the 3 I've chosen... and I don't want to miss out on using Accio either. I'm sure lots of other people would agree with me on this. And you prob don't want to go making spells abilities anyway.
Because if you make 1 an ability, people are going to start asking for you to make all of them an ability. Since I'm sure people can make convincing arguments as to why this or that spell is too OP. Like some people probably would think Curse of the Bogies and all the curses are too OP because they are curses. Plus, when using spells, don't you need to have Tatsu roll for the results anyway? So it wouldn't be OP at all, no spell would be OP. Anyway this is all just my opinion (regarding me saying you prob shouldn't make any normal spells abilities), so yeah.
Oh also. I think you should keep all the spells you can learn from homework as rewards for doing homework. It works out the best for everyone that way and gives incentive to do homework too. Because it gives you fun spells to do.
