The Hobbit is one of my favourite books of all time along with being one of my fathers favourite, it was one of my first introductions to fantasy so it will always have a place in my heart.

I also really like a lot of Terry Brooks' work, the Shannara series is very enjoyable and a great read, I'm currently on the defenders of Shannara trilogy and it's going great

I'm currently reading Brave new world by Aldous Huxley and I think it's a very interesting read, definitely worth while, same with Animal farm by George Orwell and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Farhrenheit 451 in particular felt unique, the writing alone makes it worth reading to me.

Oo! I read Shannara too! And speaking of Terrys, we definitely need to add Sir Terry Pratchett's Diskworld books! They have really cool witches and wizards, and a school of magic!

So many books and so little time... as a Christian person of faith, The Holy Bible, the first 5 books of which are also the Torah from Judaism. Also as a Christian person of faith, I recommend reading the Talmud, the Quran, and readings from the three Buddhist canons. I think it is important to do so as an act to bridge understanding and not create division; to see the junctions where beliefs are similar and can act as a toehold to finding common ground so that we can all be better at loving one another instead of demonizing one another.

Then there is everything else:

It's been mentioned already, but it is my favorite book and I want to see it highlighted again... To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

As Lear said, the classics are classic for a reason. Read them. I especially love Jane Austen - Sense and Sensibilities and Emma in particular, and Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd.

Shakespeare's comedies - especially Much Ado About Nothing and Taming of the Shrew.

For Arthurian lovers - T.H. White's The Once and Future King - featuring a main theme which is so applicable today; "Might for right, not might is right."

Somewhat contemporary choices I love.
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
All the Light We Cannot See - by Anthony Doerr (if you saw the limited series and were not impressed, I encourage you to read the book. The television presentation butchered this beautiful story.)
The English Patient - by Michael Ondaatje. It is a great story, but the writing and descriptions are glorious. The movie is good. The book is better. (Books are almost always better!)
Out of Africa - by Isak Dinesen. Even if you've seen the movie, read the book.
The Dark Tower series by Stephen King and also The Stand.
The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien

Finally, Children's books:
The Lorax - Dr. Seuss
The Giving Tree - Shel Silverstein and The Velveteen Rabbit - Margery Williams
Old Yeller - again, Disney did fine, but read the book - by Fred Gipson
Charlotte's Web - E.B. White
And because I literally walked around for weeks trying to emulate aspects of this story as a child, Harriet the Spy - by Louise Fitzhugh (IC, I have AF say "Golly" thanks to a character in the book named Ole Golly. Also, Harriet's best friend is Simon "Sport" Rocque. Some things were just meant to be... lol)
