2022, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10
The Ravenclaw's query provoked a momentary lapse of concentration by the Gryffindor. Evelynn broke site from her quarry to glance briefly back over her shoulder to where her partner had last been seen. She wouldn't allow her gays to tary long, of course, her subconscious reminding her that it could be a ruse to take advantage of her lapse in attention. But still... As much as she had chosen not to suppress her partner's flailings and abject reticence to leave the dueling stage, it wasn't as though it had gone unnoticed. He'd seemed more instinctually frightened to leave than eager to continue the duel. There had been a great deal of time wherein the boy had separated himself from the House and his friends she recalled. The reunion in the spring of last year had been surrounded in an odd haze of what she had taken at the time to be almost delusional guilt. But perhaps there was more to it...

"He will be fine," she assured the other girl, returning her attention forward just as her vision started to dim again. A hand raised reflexively to wave at the air in what became a futile attempt to clear it. It seemed the birds were intent on sapping her vision once again. Annoyance crept into her core, tinged with perhaps a bit of trepidation. It was one thing to fight blind at her partner's side. Quite another when she was alone. At the very least, she supposed, she wouldn't have to contend with accidental friendly fire. "You could always see him after the match if you've concerns," she added. Then, adjusting her grip, finished with, "but we must finish it first, and I've no intention of conceding until the time has run its course," before slinging her next spell.

Evelynn said that her partner was going to be fine. Jake still wasn't so sure...but they all had something to finish, him included. He couldn't worry about Piérre now, he had to try not to, but...maybe after.... He didn't know how she could fight on after that, with TWO opponents...but Evelynn WAS a Gryffindor. It made sense she was brave.

Jake didn't know if the smoke was in favor of Ravenclaw or Gryffindor - on the one hand, not being able to see in a duel sounded terrifying, but on the other hand, Evelynn was only one girl and she had two targets to aim for on the other side, while they had just one. If none of them could see, then didn't that maybe mean it would help the Gryffindors?

Maybe it was the glow from the flames that had lit on Thomas's arm that made the perfect target with no vision...but a knockback jinx sailed through the smoke and Thomas would find himself driven backwards by Evelynn's strong spell! The Ravenclaw boy did not return fire, and though Jake couldn't see it through the smoke, he would turn his wand on himself instead to try to heal and save some energy. He would feel some strength returning to him - even better, the fire on his wand would die out.

Jake heard the whoosh of another spell, a jet through the smoke, but Aida's knockback jinx was not as successful as Evelynn's, and there was no sound of any impact or stumble. Maybe it was true then...maybe the smoke WAS working in Evelynn's favor. But if she was hiding by cover of smoke it wouldn't last for long, already the smoke was beginning to dissipate and Jake could see the three warriors again fully, as the duel entered the real crunch time. It was getting close to the wire now....

So it was going to be one of those duels, Aida realized as their spell flew far off target. There really was no particular reason for the failure other than a lack of skill. The white wix’s aim simply flopped. How many hours had Aida stayed chained to the piste practicing aim, only to fail yet again? Apparently the need for unpredictable human moving targets was irreplaceable compared to magically animated training dummies. For the time being, at least, there was Evelynn to face off against. With an apologetic frown towards Thomas, Aida prepared for the next round... half wondering what horrors awaited Elfy in the hospital.

It sucked to be on fire, at least he wasn’t anymore! Thomas found himself unable to dodge Evelynn’s spell, the Flipendo catching him unaware amidst the smoke. He grumbled of course, complaining as he always did. “Eeeeugh, this duel needs to get done soon. My head hurts.” It was true, his vision swam in a sense, but he was still standing upright despite it all.

Before her incantation could quite leave her lips, Evelynn saw the faint glow of a light drawing nearer through the fog. She should have expected as much. Even with the obfuscation of the stage, the sound of her voice was sure to let them pinpoint her location. Forced to duck, the spell sailed harmlessly overhead and she finished her own with a flick towards where Banes had last been seen fading into the haze before moving from her position. So long as she kept moving, she gathered, they should have a harder time locking her down. She was rewarded with the sound of the boy's complaint. A smile tugged faintly at her lips as he did. If she could just outlast him... perhaps there was still a slim chance that she could recover from their near certain defeat.

They had to be getting tired now. The duel was going on for a while now, and the end was near, no matter what happened. For Jake, it was almost a relief. This duel had been a haunting one, and the worst part was he didn't even know why. There was more at play here than spells being cast all around. Something was going on with some of the duelists that seemed to come from deep within, but what it was that troubled them was a mystery. The smoke on the battle field cleared, and Evelynn would continue her assault on Thomas. Another knockback shot in his direction, another knockback connected. The spells would be driving Thomas backwards, but he stood his ground, trying to keep in the game. He healed himself again, he must have desperately been trying to stay in the fight, to withstand the attacks, and to not leave his partner on their own. It was really amazing how he had somehow stayed on his feet.

Really Jake was amazed by both of them. Thomas kept taking knockback jinxes, and hadn't given up. But what about Evelynn? How did she keep fighting alone against two kids at once? Thomas seemed tired, and Jake didn't even know if the Ravenclaw boy was going to be able to last.
Maybe Evelynn WOULD be able to do it. But the tides would soon turn in the worst way....

With a bang that made the Hufflepuff jump, he saw a flash of lightning come down from the ominous storm cloud overhead and shock Evelynn! Jake gasped, staring at what the magic had done. HOW was this allowed?? But it was in the rules, because wizards thought you could do just about anything, and Evelynn must have been feeling the pain and shock from the jolt of electricity. He resisted the urge to cover his eyes as the sudden shock would send pain through the Gryffindor.

As Jake stared frozen, Aida didn't freeze, and to make things even WORSE for Evelynn, Aida's fire spell would then hit its mark. All of the elements were really coming for Evelynn now, and while she had been strong just moments before, how much had that taken out of her? It could have been the moment that decided the duel for good. He knew Evelynn was a Gryffindor and wasn't one to give up, but that was before she had been shocked, and now she was burning. How could she keep fighting NOW? Did she have it in her? Could she do it? He had a feeling she was going to try.

As the lightning struck the Gryffindor and Aida’s incendio duo landed, the wix felt like they were finally getting somewhere. Still, even with Elfy gone, it seemed like this match was likely to time out before anyone else fell. Looking back over at the Hufflepuff moderator, Aida wondered if he was entertained, or if the duel's slowness had begun to drag on his attention. Certainly Aida “Chained-to-Piste” Ellwood had ample endurance for enjoying duelling, but after everything that happened with Elfy shrieking his way to the hospital and the terrifying bout with claustrophobia, Aida was ready to finish the duel. It would be good to step outside and get some fresh air… and maybe make sure the house elves weren’t doing anything funny to Piérre along the way.

And so Thomas persevered, against all odds and against his own better judgment. Really, he had a distaste for medical spells—always more interested in causing damage rather than mending it—but it served him decently as a means to an end. Once again, the Ravenclaw found himself unable to dodge his adversary’s Flipendo, admittedly he felt his resolve waning even in his efforts to sustain himself. “This is a coward’s tactic,” he languidly remarked almost to himself rather than to anyone in particular, speech slow and labored. Of course, he was still in good enough spirits to spare some snark, and with an accompanying smile he added, “but surely it’s a winner’s tactic all the same.”
