Triathalon: Round 1 Swimming  Summer Camp '22
LEVEL 2
Before Nessie knew it, the competition was starting. She hurried into the water while trying to keep a respectful distance from the other participants, not wanting to be in anyone's way, and then started to swim as soon as she could, preferring to glide gracefully through the water instead of splashily running.

She knew there were numerous others, but at first she didn't think about that, she just focused on the swimming and on trying not to interfere with anybody else's race. It was easy to lose herself in the rhythm of the activity, to think about her pacing and not worry about anything else. She'd signed up to have a good time without much worry about her placement, and that was exactly what she'd set out to do.

Nessie loved the water. Admittedly, she wasn't the fastest swimmer, and after the first lap she started to pay attention to her competitors, becoming aware that she was nowhere near the front of the pack, but also quite content to be comfortably keeping pace without need to worry about the time limit for now. The young Hufflepuff was not especially concerned about vying for the lead - she was here just to have a good time, and she wasn't exerting too much effort yet. This was the very beginning of the triathlon, and she certainly didn't want to tire herself out so soon.

They participants wouldn't be left to wait long before the start of the match. With the call to start, they were off in a spray of sand. Greta scrambled forward with the rest, arms pumping as she sprinted, feet slapping against the loose shoreline. Already Allu was making progress with leaps and bounds, leaving Greta in a figurative dust. "Good luck, Allu!" she had called after him, hands lifting to cup her mouth as she did. Perhaps she ought not to have. Her feet stuck themselves into the sand, and she tumbled forward. "EEACK!"

Hands buried themselves wrist deep into the ground, knees following shortly thereafter. This was NOT the way to start a race! She hadn't even made it to the water, yet! Whining, she pushed herself back up to a stand, vaulting forward as she did as though from a sprinter's starting position, not even bothering to wipe off the sand that had coated itself to her skin. The water could take care of that. Splashing into the water, she tried—rather unsuccessfully—to suppress a squeal of discomfort. COLD. Not that she wasn't used to the chill when she would swim back home, but then she would never be in a rush and could take her time to acclimate. Not so here.

She hurried forward, determined not to be the laughing stock of the event, and quickly jumped forward into a rather unflattering belly-flop upon the water before paddling on. Preoccupied as she was just trying to do her best, she wouldn't be aware of just how far she had fallen behind. Probably for the best.

Current Progress: Swimming Level TWO
As more arrived for the races, Evelynn began to prepare. Her morning had already seen her usual sunrise run, but it never hurt to stretch out a little more, especially given that it had been some time since she had really swam at all, let alone for something more than relaxation. With particular focus on her arms, she allowed her gaze to wander the rest awaiting the signal. It was certainly going to be a tough competition. She held no misguided notion that she was likely to place well, but the idea of completing the race seemed attractive enough to participate. Like Silverton, she sought a sense of self-assurance. And given that she would not be participating in any of the official inter-school competitions, this was as good as any.

"Best of luck to you," Evelynn would offer to Silverton, nodding respectfully in her direction befoe adopting an anticipatory position. Poised, muscles coiled, she waited for the signal to start. As soon as it sounded, she was off with the rest. The balls of her feet dug into the sand as she urged herself to the water. She would cut through its currents only so far before launching forward into a shallow dive, taking advantage of the propulsion to gain a short distance and fall into a rhythmic pattern. One. Two. Three. Breathe.

While the back crawl was more leisurely, and generally her preferred style, the front crawl was the most efficient and fastest. It was also the easiest to measure distance and to track the curvature needed to lap around the boat. Admittedly, it was easier said than done. The water was congested, splashing and kicks everywhere. If she wasn't careful, she was liable to get a foot in the face and have to bow out early. Yet neither was it always so easy to pass someone, even if their speed was generally slower. She would have to play it carefully, sprinting when she could with bursts of strength to gain a lead.

Swimming [ Level II ]

He would’ve assumed his earlier encounter with the silver-haired lady made his legs a bit too weak to complete the first round. Interacting with strangers was a mental workout after all. But it seemed to be the exact opposite. His building confidence as a victor between the war of staying and salvaging his blunder or running away gave him a huge energy boost. Just as he dove into the water, he spared no time in completing the first lap. Perhaps he should thank the silver-haired lady after they complete this event.

Without the white robe wrapped around him, there was nothing stopping him from swimming freely. There were several things that slowed him down further. He was not a regular swimmer. It has been a while since he ever set foot in the water. Not because he was scared, thankfully, but the shivering cold that happens after you get out of the water. For the easily cold boy, that was not ideal. Another is because of his discomfort in wearing swimsuits. In conclusion, this was kinda new. Thankfully, he knew the basics of swimming.

The next task would be more up his alley. If he couldn’t swim as fast as others, he was at least confident in his strength. If he succeeded in gaining lead or not remains, but with the power of the gutsy silver-haired lady and their short encounter, he would at least try his best-est.

She wasn't an expert on triathlons - or swimming in general, for that matter - but Ayako had a good general plan based on advice she'd read about as a muggle when trying to get into shape for her muggle school's physical education class: pacing was important, so she wasn't going to push herself too hard in the beginning. She had three laps to make around the ship, so she was going to keep a steady pace without becoming winded or tired.

As she dove - with rather good form, in her opinion - into the water, the icy depths forced her to involuntarily shiver. Regaining her composure, she cursed her own lack of experience in swimming. The lap was going well enough, but she still didn't feel quite comfortable with the sport in general.

She was near the back of the pack, but that wasn't an issue. She was pacing herself, and when the other participants were exhausted and panting, she would ease ahead like the turtle against the hare.

As she fought against the water, Ayako noted with pride that Chi seemed to be holding her own quite well. Maybe she would finish and beat Ayako's time. She could only hope. Regardless, she was proud of the girl.

The signal was given and the swimmers had all run for the water. Stephen was generally a strong swimmer, having grown up in the San Francisco Bay area of the United States. He had spent a great deal of his time in the waters there, which were always much colder than people realized, so the initial shock of the stadium water's temperature did not bother him as it had some of those around him. That was a little bit of an advantage at the outset.

His strategy had not been to be first. He did not want to tire himself out completely on his first lap. He also did not want to get caught up in the choppy and fraught waters as swimmers battled for position going into the second lap around the ship. Sure and steady pacing would more than suffice at this point. He knew there was a time limit, but felt confident he could meet it, so to accommodate his comfort for this round, he rolled onto his back and swam the backstroke.

This move had its pros and cons. Comfort was a definite pro and less energy would be expended in trying to breathe as his face would never be submerged in the water. The con was not being able to see directly in front of him. He was going to rely on the wave action increasing as he drew nearer to other swimmers, at which point he would roll back over in the water, assess the waters and activity ahead of him, and course correct as necessary. He found that be sticking close to the side of the boat, he could easily gauge his position, and the waters there were not as turbulent. It also cut down on the distance he had to swim. The farther one was away from the ship the farther their laps would end up being.

He rounded the end of the ship and it was looking to be fairly smooth sailing to the end of his second round, but he wasn't going to count his sea turtles before they hatched.

Although he rolled his eyes at Aryaan's request to 'live a little', he found himself doing so more out of amusement and a willingness to display an obvious distaste rather than believing the boy's choice to be distasteful. Little by little, he found that Aryaan was more than just mindless energy, and he was proved right by the words his Champion spoke next.

An opportunity to observe the other Champions? Akira found his eyes flicker back and forth across the crowd, searching. He had memorized the faces of all the other Champions from the newspaper. After all, they had all been interviewed and featured with photographs. There, a tall, pale boy, was Howard White, dhampir Champion of Hogwarts. "Let's see if he fries in the lake," he muttered under his breath, only so Shamsi could hear. He didn't quite care what Shamsi thought of him when speaking about the opposition; his politeness had somehow worn down -- was his guard lowering in front of this boy? Over there was Rodion Makarovich, dark hair and haughtiness, carrying himself like a proud, true pureblood. "Makarovich," Akira observed. "Quite admirable, really," he would allow such a compliment. Next, Angelique de Clairmont. "Certainly quite athletic. Well, we'll see how everyone does after the first round, shall we?"

Into the water he dove, suppressing a grimace as the cold water hit his skin and wet his hair. Cold was something he had gotten used to by now, having been doused by buckets outdoors during casting practice. He focused on each stroke, and soon found himself finishing ahead of most after the first lap. He didn't have to tread water long until Aryaan caught up. "Seems like the dhampir Champion is doing very well," he observed. "Maybe the water is helping, but we'll see how he performs on the run," he added with a slight barb. "Makarovich and de Clairmont are in the top half, as expected. I suppose they'll do well in the choppier waters next round, too," he mused, confidence in his own strength wavering just a bit for the upcoming challenge, knowing his strength didn't quite match his stamina.

Bloom was about to continue the conversation with Evelynn when the race started to begin. Bloom smiled at her new Gryffindor friend and nodded to her. Now it was time for Bloom to show what she got. She wasn't going to make it a big deal for Howard or anyone else to see. This was for herself to see if she was good enough to be on the Hexwizard Tournament. Bloom took out her pig tail and redid her hair in a tighter ponytail. She steadied her breathing.

Bloom got herself ready and when all was set to go, Bloom ran into the waters, ignoring at how cold the waters were at the touch of her skin, and with all of her might, she swam around the ship the first time. Luckily, she was able to successfully get around the ship without any problems. Bloom slowly felt her arms feel like jelly. Never have they been used this much at one time. Kicking like her feet could not kick before, Bloom kept going, knowing that she is going to have to go a second time around the ship.

Bloom, keeping her breathing steady, made her way towards the second lap around the ship. Come on, you got this, she said to herself.

Marina was in no hurry to enter the water. Despite this, it was now time all the other triathlon participants were rushing to get in. "Well here goes nothing," Marina jumped in before she gave herself the opportunity to chicken out.

The water was not as bad as she had expected, but nonetheless it was exactly how she had remembered it. The only good thing was that she could still swim. Unlike most people Marina was not trying to get to the end first. She did not care about winning. Surviving was the only thing that she cared about.

Marina's only strategy was basically to ignore everything. She did not look down at the water below, the last thing she needed was more fear.

Marina had made it to the end of round one. Yes! The sooner she got out of this endless puddle of death liquid. Although, she was one of the last to finish Marina was proud of herself. She had survived swimming, and now there was only three more rounds of terror to go before she was safely back on the ground. Marina was actually a little grateful that Mochi had signed her up for the triathlon. "You got this." She whispered.

Howard focused on his breathing as he waited for the first round to begin. The moments seemed to slow as his focus sharpened. Red eyes would scan the scene around him and they would fall onto familiar faces. He would offer small smiles, waves hello or thumbs up to courage his friends, but he wouldn't offer any conversation. Howard couldn't tell if it was just his competitive nature or what that made him so eager to do well in this event. Perhaps it was the desire to show his peers that he deserved to be Hogwarts champion and that he could represent the school well. Maybe a chance to show them all just how far he had come in his own personal journey. Regardless of what it was he was here to win and as the event began he would give it his all.

Long legs would dash forward as Howard began the first lap. Although the adrenaline surged he did his best to pace himself once he hit the water. If he expended too much energy in the start he may get ahead but might lose all reserved energy when he would need it the most. Ever since Bloom had taught him the basics of swimming he had been practicing and no one would consider him a great swimmer, but he could hold his own. With his pacing set Howard would finish the first lap and continue on to the second. Hopefully his strength would serve him well.
