There is a very effective way to get your posts up to 20, you can play a few games in the Games Room. And once you reach 20 posts and wait for 10 days after your registration date a report card will appear in your menu then I'll be able to have access to classes and do homework.

Or if you want to start right at the beginning, you might want to write your sorting or the train ride to Hogwarts.
You can also go to Diagon Alley.

I felt like that too when I joined, the site can be a littke overwhelming at first.
But there is really no reason to be afraid to owl people, can't get worse than "No sorry, I have too many roleplays/I am too busy in rl."
No one is going to judge you for asking too roleplay with them, I think most of us struggled a bit at the beginning.
If you want to, I'd offer to roleplay as well.
