I don't think Alec is ever going to lose his parents. I could see even with how sweet he is that he just decides to cut ties with them later in life, but that's to the extent of it.
My iNPC André has dealt with a lot of loss, but I'm hoping as he grows he'll channel his learning his loss into something that can help others. He's twelve, he thinks he's edgy, and he's mad at the world at the moment, so imma let that be and have a bit of fun with it.
I'm going to make sure that his loss doesn't define him long-term because he's a lot more then just his loss. I hope André turns out to be a nice kid though, I CANNOT IMAGINE HAVING TO DEAL WITH A KID WHO'S TRYING TO BE AN EDGELORD ALL THE TIME, because I already have to deal with Alec who even with mostly good intentions [Alec locked a kid out of the house for the night because this the kid dare tell Alec's friends one of Alec's secrets] finds his way into trouble.

Koko's birth parents are dead, but she was adopted when she was quite young by her father's distant cousin and her husband. She doesn't think much about the loss of her parents; rather, her thoughts are much occupied by her adoptive parents' recent divorce.
It'd be nice to see characters with both parents living and happy, but I'd be a hypocrite if I said that were best xD

@Koko Riddle it is nice to see. I'd love more of it. Alec's parents are getting a divorce come December, and this is what'll push him over to edge and help him start to realize it's okay to lean onto people and ask for help if you need it. He's going to have stronger friendships that he needs and it's all going to be for the better, hopefully.

It all depends on how you want to develop your character. Sometimes people feel like they can develop a character in different ways, aside from tragedy and the like, and they certainly can, through relationships on site, as well as facing, failing, and eventually overcoming personal challenges that don't necessarily have to involve any sort of real tragedy at all.
The thing is, people seem to connect easier with a story that does involve tragedy; it almost automatically evokes emotion in a lot of people, and can serve an integral purpose to character development, if done right.
But the fact of the matter is, whether your character is an orphan who has never felt loved by anyone, or a lovable kid who had the best parents in the world, you have to be able to connect with your character on a personal level in order to make it work as well as possible. Even if one of your characters' biggest problems is, say, he's afraid to talk to girls, if you can get in his head, then you can build a whole thing around that.
Why is he afraid to talk to them? Because he sees them as amazing, almost untouchable by someone as inadequate as him. Why would they have any interest in him when they have so many better options? And why does he care so much that it becomes a big problem for him? Because he thinks that they all deserve to have someone who can make them happier than they knew they could be, and if he could do that for even one of them, then he has done enough. Also, in reality, that is the person he wishes he could be, that is his goal, because deep down, he just wants to feel happy and adequate himself...
So he runs into a girl that chooses to talk to him, and genuinely enjoys it, yada yada yada, he slowly comes to realize that he has plenty to give, that he isn't as inadequate as he thought he was, blah blah blah. Then you fill in the details surrounding that, and BAM, you have a story that you can get emotionally involved in without everyone around your character becoming not alive.
Ahem. So sorry about that overly long and possibly odd post concerning the subject. I got excited.
