Now, since he was able to go to the bookstore and buy what he wanted, he figured he'd take some steps to go upstairs and explore. His eyes twinkled as he pushed past a few people passing by him. Octavius saw a sign with the letter "D" pointing to the right, likely to the side of the bookshelf. He walked down that aisle and found something interesting. A book that was titled 'Dark Arts: What They Don't Tell You.' but there was no author.

There was a picture of a face, but there was no mouth. It was odd, kind of surreal, but also kind of uncomfortable. This, at least to him, seemed to be a funky book, maybe one that fewer people will think of buying, but still valuable in all aspects. Well.. to Octavius, it was valuable.

He opened the book to see an interesting spell. Shield Penetration Spell. If that was what was classified as the Dark Arts.. in this book anyways.. then he needed to buy the book. This could prove useful. He walked down the stairs and went up to the register to pay. Only 30 galleons for the book! It wasn't a sweet deal, honestly, but maybe it was worth it.

One could hope. He smiled, and walked out of the store, finding a nearby bench to sit on.

Octavius's hand lingered on the cover of the book before opening it again, but this time on a different spell.. the mouth removal spell. It's interesting, honestly. That must be what the image on the cover was. Okay, well, he began to read the page on this. "Oscausi", he said, reading the book. His mouth gaped open a little, the incantation just rolled out easily, barely requiring any effort. The wand movement was also.. simple actually.

He just had to point at the target. The man felt he might as well give it a shot, to see if the book truly wasn't a knockoff, given that it was literally 30 galleons. He looked at himself and sighed. Guess he was going to make himself an example to test. Hopefully it didn't do worse than just what it was supposed to do.

He pointed the wand at himself, the tip facing his face. A deep breath in, a deep breath out, maybe he's ready. Clearly and concisely, he spoke, "Oscausi." And all of a sudden, he touched his face where the lip was formerly and discovered that it was gone. A patch of skin covered the spot. Oh god. Okay, so how would he reverse it..

This goblin was a cheater. There was no ifs about it, he cheated. He attacks people for fun. He was a horrible being to be with. But for Clark himself? He thought of himself as the better person. Was he? No. He really was not.

Clark figured he might as well use his short height to try to experiment, see if he can get away with some things. He saw some people flying around the whomping willow, then darting to the edges of the woods, turning through some weird giant bug cloud. It was weird, but was it worth giving a shot to test? Maybe. There was a kid sitting on a broom watching over the others flying around, and Clark assumed this was the referee.

He grabbed a school broom and hopped on, his wand out as he held onto the shaft, the broom rising and moving in the direction the others were. First the whomping willow, and Clark barely managed to avoid being pulverized. He decided that he would use his wand to try and see if he can succeed and avoid getting caught casting this spell. He made the wand movement for the Cascading Jinx, and spoke the incantation to the best memory he could, according to what his father taught, "Ingens Explosiones!" It seemed to cause the nearby boy to gasp from the sparks landing on his skin. But there was no whistle blown.

No one telling him to stop or to do what Quidditch called.. a penalty lap. He figured he'd test his luck and push it, considering another spell usage. Alright, fine. Clothing-Ignition. Same target, if the moderator didn't notice, then surely he had honed his cheating skills. He made the wand movement for the Clothing-Ignition spell, as it was taught in Herbology in first year, then stated the incantation, "Lacarnum Inflamari" as clearly as he could. The previously targeted boy was targeted again, this time his clothes caught on fire.

He looked back at the moderator, and again, no call-outs. This was a weird feeling. He was so used to being caught and fussed at. This was nice. One last experiment, different target. Incendio, why not? He would see if the moderator was simply just ignoring. He aimed towards a girl, though his intention was really to set her wooden broom alight. "Incendio," He called with determination, the wand movement made. The broom the girl was riding on caught on fire, and she was whipping out her wand, likely to extinguish it, but again, as it were the last two times, he did not get caught.

Clark quit the practice race and hopped off of the broom, leaving it where he got off. A smile broad on his face.

Perrin grew up in a home in which achievement was considered the standard, rather than an exception.
His father, a Ministry official in the Department of Magical Law, made it clear throughout all of the young boy’s life that academic success would be expected.

β€œDo you know how lucky you are, to have us as parents..loving and able to give you a great education? All of your ancestors β€”well, for the most partβ€” have always worked hard to succeed. You’d better not disappoint me again, and take more care with your real studies that will begin next year, young man!”

Alistair (Perrin’s father) had received his report card from the French private school he attended, which required him to take the bus with Muggles every day for what felt like ages; and although Perrin’s marks were generally strong, he hadn’t received the highest grade in one subject: French.
Perrin had assumed that he didn’t need to study for it, thinking himself far beyond the required level, and had instead played with his neighbours instead of revising the day before the exam. He promised himself that next time, he would not rely on assumptions. He would work hard, for every subject, every time.
His mother, an avid potioneer, offered a quieter but no less firm model: she read constantly, made careful notes, and handled her work with methodical precision. From observing her, with admiration filling his eyes, Perrin learned that magic was not just power, but discipline and understanding.
During his pre-Hogwarts years, and with growing application as his last summer before starting wizarding school arrived, Perrin spent much of his time reading books from his parents’ collections, especially their old school manuals. Charms quickly drew his attention: he appreciated how it combined structure with visible, measurable effects. Before ever holding a wand, he had already spent hours mouthing incantations and tracing standard wand movements with a stick from his favourite tree in the garden β€” the one his grandfather had planted with him for his seventh birthday.
Perrin plans to participate actively in Charms class, not out of any desire to stand out, but because he feels prepared and confident in the material, and eager to learn more than just from his books, thanks to his teacher’s knowledge. He has also decided to make full use of study periods after class, and part of his spare time, to reread lessons and explore more advanced points in the theory.
THus, Perrin’s approach to this class fits the ability of a Prodigal Learner not because of any sudden talent (although he may well discover an ease for magical theory even in other subjects), but because he has a genuine and sustained interest in Charms, which will led him to study and practise consistently on his own.

While not good at Care of Magical Creatures, Lesmana had an affinity for some 'mundane' animals, especially poultry, cattle, and spiders. Yes, spiders. This trait already showed up when he was a toddler. At that time, he was still living in Jogjakarta. He liked to visit his grandparents, who had a hobby of taking care of some chickens in their house. The boy often spent more time with the chickens than with his grandparents during his visit. Seeing this, his grandfather taught him how to take care of a chicken.

Starting from chicken, Lesmana slowly learned how to take care of cattle from his neighbour. It was when he started to move to Omah Geni. When the family introduced themselves to the neighbour, Lesmana saw some pretty-looking cows with thick fur and long eyelashes. Lesmana asked many things about the cows to the neighbour until at some point, the neighbour let him to take help him take care of the cows on the farm.

Someday, when he took some rest on the farm, he saw a dried leaf moving on the ground. Curious, he took the leaf and found that a small spider was crawling. He was observing the spider and following the little creature. His curiosity didn't stop. His hand reached the spider, letting it crawl. He laughed from the tickling feeling. He went home with the spider and named it Crawlee.

Lesmana spent much of his time with Crawlee, making their bond stronger. Lesmana observed the habits, the food it liked and didn't like. Lesmana sometimes 'understood' his spider's movement. And so did Crawlee. The spider seemed to understand him. Maybe it might be a notice of its owner's habit. One day, Lesmana lost his favourite necklace, the gift that was given his uncle. He looked upset while looking for his necklace until he saw the spider crawling from its makeshift castle. Lesmana followed it until it stopped near his necklace. He was super happy. Lesmana gifted Crawlee with many foods that it liked.

Crawlee was a memory now. Lesmana had moved on and focused on his study and work for some years, achieving his excellence in potions. When he moved to England, he found another little creature that he called Skippy. Skippy was different than Crawlee. He was more active and expressive. Not only that, Skippy showed attachment to Lesmana. With this trait of Skippy and Lesmana's knowledge from taking care of spider, it took short time for them to create a bonding.

Wood: Cherry | 185/50
Reducio
If one truly knows Raizel, pink was never her color. Her aesthetics falls more on the darker shade as what could be seen in her day to day clothing of choice. Ranging from black to the color of crimson. She had never seen herself suited with pastel colors or anything bright yet she ended up with a wand that looked more suited for decoration rather than combat. But for some reason, that didn't bother her. She was accepting when saw it being taken out of its box. Perhaps it was what it symbolized that somehow made her forget about how it doesn't match her colors of choice. Cherry wood, rare, highly valued by people from Mahoutokoro. How such a wood was acquired by whoever her grandfather hired to make it, that she doesn't know. Powerful, mysterious but what mattered the most was it resonated with her, not just its core. It understood her, her desires, of what she seeks, as if it's telling her that it could help her achieve it: Her goal of becoming a powerful witch and discarding this weak version of hers.
Wandcore: Thunderbird Tail Feather | 190/50
Reducio
It is said that cherry wood was best paired with a core that's just equally powerful, as destructive as the magic it possesses. Raizel thought it would be the same as her previous wand that's now a wreck due to her own recklessness and stubbornness to give up. But it wasn't. It was far more resilient than the dragon heartstring to match that unwavering determination of hers, to withstand it and answer her calls for it, the hard to tame Thunderbird Tail Feather. It was a core that needed control and skills, something that Raizel thought she didn't have until the wand responded in her hold. She was expecting a backlash, an attempt to escape a talentless owner like her yet there was nothing. It believed in her more than she believed in herself. It knew her fighting spirit deep within, it knew she wasn't one to give up no matter how much her luck brings her down and it knew she’s not one to turn down a challenge and will instead tackle it head on with determination and courage. It knew that she would bring out its true potential.
Length: 27.1 cm | 118/50
Reducio
They say that the wand length reflects the personality of the owner and that's probably the reason why her wand was… not so short and not as long. She was more in the middle of being an introvert and an extrovert. She's friendly, playful towards those that she's close with. She likes having fun with them yet when in the presence of strangers, Raizel just sits there in a quiet manner with a friendly smile on her face so as to not be seen as scary or hard to approach. There are also times that she just let her excitement consume her and then times that she's more laid back and would rather sleep than do anything else.
Flexibility: Hard | 68/50
Reducio
With a core so powerful and a wood with equally strong magic, a wand with a sturdy upbringing would suit her well. It was so to prevent the wand from breaking whenever it tries to unleash and channel the magic within. A difficult wand to work with, much like its core but the perfect combination for someone equally stubborn and doesn't know how to give up that easily.
Acquisition: 624
Reducio
Throughout her years in Hogwarts, ever since those countless failures and bad luck started, Raizel had never stopped pushing herself to the limits of her capabilities, even ending up with her getting sick or taking too many trips to the hospital wing. Driven by her own desire for power, for improvement is what had led her to that reckless path and it did not just hurt her or her friends, but her trusty partner as well who had stuck with her to help her achieve it.

It happened one morning during practice. She was back into her usual routine of spellcasting to the point of exhaustion following the 3 consecutive loses of the Gryffindor Broom Racing Team. A spell backfiring was the cause and while it was something that usually doesn't happen nowadays, she expected for it to not cause that much damage not just to her, but to her wand as well. Unfortunately, that was the last straw and it was too late for Raizel to realize how her actions did have an effect on others. While it was just a wand, the Gryffindor felt bad seeing its broken figure lying on the floor and knowing the fact that most of it was caused by her reckless actions somehow broke her. She should've listened when people told her to stop doing the reckless things she was doing, and took the words of a certain upperclassman from another school more seriously. She should've looked more closely at what she had achieved instead of brushing them off as nothing and focused on her desperation to be better, her recent failures and loses. It's kind of a bit late to realize that now, huh. Those thoughts had been lingering in her mind for quite some time now but it still took her a while to finally acknowledge them and at the cost of her wand too.

When it came to telling her parents about it, she was afraid. She thought about how she could probably survive the rest of the school year without a wand but with lessons still ahead of her and vacation still far away, she had no choice but to break the news to her parents through owl. Of course, after hearing how she broke her wand and saw the horrible condition it was in, her parents, mostly her father, were disappointed. But it was more on her reckless behaviors that they too had noticed and even told her about but she never listened. Hopefully, she had learned something from this. Next weekend, they set up a meeting in Hogsmeade and someone else was joining them. Her grandfather, along with her father, met her in Hogsmeade with a box in hand. Her grandfather was told of her wandless situation and after getting in touch with someone that her uncle, Oziel Toussaint, recommended, they managed to get a wand custom made for her. Cherry wood and Thunderbird tail feather, a combination that Raizel wasn't expecting due to the magical nature of the wood and the power that the Thunderbird Tail Feather have. For someone so weak like her, how could she manage such a wand? Even more so after it decided to work with her, to accept her as its owner.

β€œYou could do great things.” Raizel had never bonded with her grandfather. She barely knows him yet when he said those words, they were comforting in a way but at the same time, it was hard to accept, not with tons of failures under her belt more than successes. β€œThe wand is never wrong. It senses the potential that you have.”

β€œWhat potential?”

β€œThe one sleeping within.”

β€œBut I don't-”

β€œThe wand believes you do, I think it's time to do the same.”

Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):

Jack had always been amused by and appreciated his being sorted into Slytherin as a spiteful slap in the face of the house's founder, Salazar Slytherin. As a muggle-born wizard, he knew the pureblooded founder would have been turning in his grave to have known that 'mudbloods' like Jack were admitted into his sacred house when Salazar valued those with magically pure bloodlines the most. So, when Jack learned that conversing with snakes was an almost exclusively hereditary trait, that those who could do so were called Parselmouths, and that nearly all Parselmouths were direct descendants of Salazar Slytherin, naturally he became interested in learning the language. This interest only grew when he discovered that, like the House of Slytherin, Parseltongue - the language that Parselmouths spoke to converse with snakes - was largely associated with Dark wizards and the Dark Arts because that meant if he could learn it, he could try to subvert expectations regarding learning and knowing the language. To his great surprise and delight, when he looked into the language, he discovered that even if he wasn’t able to speak it, he could manage to learn and understand it even as a muggle-born wizard.

Having already been raised on the two languages of English and Welsh, Jack already had a firm grasp of what it meant to be multi-lingual. Having been born to muggles and raised as a muggle, he was also intensely fascinated with all things magical, so to learn a magical language was of great interest to him, especially if it wasn’t well-known that non-descendants of Salazar could even understand it at all; as Albus Dumbledore had. Once he found that out, Jack silently began to dedicate himself to learning the language little by little for fun.

As it turned out, a dormmate or two of his actually spoke Parseltongue, so it wasn’t too tricky for Jack to pick up because he had the chance to hear it every now and then. He wasn’t in any hurry to learn it, especially because he didn’t actually suspect his dormmates of being associated with the Dark Arts or doing anything sinister that would characterize them as Dark wizards. Thus, he told no one he was trying to learn it and asked no one for help in attempting to do so, thinking it would be a fun surprise if and when he finally felt the time came for him to reveal his knowledge of the language; hopefully not before he fluently understood as much as he possibly could.

One more thing motivated Jack to learn the language of Parseltongue more than any other magical language he learned about in his early years at Hogwarts. Mermaids spoke mermish, trolls spoke troll, giants spoke giant, veelas spoke veela, and so on and so forth. However, Jack had always been of the opinion that animals couldn’t think or feel like humans could and that animal-lovers tended to anthropomorphize animals and their ways of thinking and feeling in their minds to the point that it was foolish and sometimes even dangerous to both the human and the animal in question. If he learned how Parselmouths spoke Parseltongue and understood their conversations with one another, Jack figured he could find out for sure if non-magical animals - at least snakes - really did think and feel like humans or if they simply thought and feel like he imagined them to as animals or something else entirely. As with many things, curiosity largely served as his motivation to find out.

Describe why this fits your character (not why you the player want it):
Reducio
As the result of hard work and time, her maturity as a witch evidenced in her year and her NEWT-level pursuit of Defense Against the Dark Arts and her dominance in duelling, the one part of the library Bridget had never had access to opened up. The Restricted Section. It didn't fill her with quite so much excitement as eyeing it across the aisles in her first year, curious but too cautious to go anywhere near it, but it did feel special walking amongst those books for the first time, the air somehow heavier, older. It felt like she'd made it.

She did not have the time to marvel over the energy of a place or reminisce on dreams from when she first started Hogwarts; the same high-level classes that had granted her entry into this part of the library still demanded continuous effort toward exams and eventual job applications that would require NEWT qualifications. Unlike her usual extracurricular pursuit of extra magic as tools in her metaphorical toolbelt, Bridget was actually here as part of her studying. None of these spells would be on the Defense Against the Dark Arts exam, but digging further into the theory and practice of what the higher levels of this subject entailed could only help. If she didn't get an Outstanding in anything else, she wanted one in this subject, and that meant trying to be the most knowledgeable student in that exam room.

Of course she couldn't help but try a few of the spells out, too, once she was thinking about how useful they could be in a pinch. The Encompassing Shield Charm caught her eye first--it was a good protective spell, exactly the sort of thing she couldn't risk not knowing if it ever became useful--but once she'd proven to herself she was capable of casting such spells on her own, of course all of them looked interesting. Even the disturbing ones, curses that they would only be taught in class became knowledge of dark spells was the only defense against them when preventing them altogether wasn't possible. That was what she was gaining from this: knowledge, potential, essay question examples.

The Restricted Section was a bit intense compared to the rest of the library, some of the books chained or behind glass, but it still felt like a break, if only because she saved poking around in there for after she'd finished her actual studying and duelling practice. It returned a spark to learning that was difficult to maintain when so many expectations and pressures were tied to it, just checking out a book because she wanted to. And access to this kind of knowledge might not be something she had so easily again, so she had to make use of it while she was here.

Nabi had always been an observer, taking in everything with detail. Her mother was always pleased with her ever so analytical way of viewing the world, reminding her of what was expected of her as her daughter, her own flesh and blood.

Of what was expected of a pureblood.

Her silent demeanor tends to hide the various thoughts she has brewing in her mind, never giving away more than what she chooses to reveal. Nabi had grown up in a strict household, perfection being the standard. Nothing more, nothing less.

There was no room for error, after all.

As her mother would say, "It is all in the details." In details, Nabi found logic. Calculated moves and reactions, measured thoughts? perhaps.

Though that would be a story for another day.

Her observational skills started off with simple matters as a toddler, making sure her dress never had any lint, her hair was neatly done, and her shoes were well polished. Eventually, the expectations shifted, every word well thought out, every pause well placed. For Nabi, nothing was ever an accident, just a well-placed pawn.

A simple thread ready to be pulled out.

Much like the dresses, she would point out as she watched her parents work on their fashion pieces. A young 9-year-old Nabi, sitting on a stool as she glanced over the various fabrics draped over mannequins, scanning for even a bead that may be out of place. Her gray eyes followed the design of each piece, taking in how neat each embroidered design was.

Each stitch was neat enough to run a finger over it without feeling where the thread of a certain color ended and another began, causing the silk threads to blend into a perfect gradient. Nabi never quite liked gems in her clothes, extravagant designs that required numerous beads; there was too much room for errors. A missing bead was easier to spot in a design that depended its look on where each stone was placed.

A black dress with gemstones had proven that to her.

The dress was beautiful, its elegance enhanced by the petite gemstones that adorned the neckline and waist. It was near perfect, simplicity with hints of luxury, like stars on the night sky.

The only issue was that the dress was missing one stone.

The gem was small, leaning more to a speck of spilled ink rather than a rock, but the blank space where it should have been was large enough for Nabi to take notice. To which she informed her mother and made sure the gem was replaced.

Oziel thought about this for a while, about what he should do with his magical capabilities. He had stood there, staring at the skies for almost an hour during weekends and his friend, Cecilia was getting a bit concerned about it. β€œAre you alright?” She asked, snapping out the boy from his trance and making him turn his head towards her.

β€œYeah. Just thinking.”

β€œThat’s new.”

Oziel glared but eventually, he just laughed. The girl only shook her head in response. What craziness was he thinking now? She was probably thinking. Oziel can tell with how she looked unimpressed, expecting some troublemaking shenanigans but Oz wasn’t thinking about those. He was thinking about something else that he believes could help him achieve his goal of becoming an Auror. β€œI want to become a better spellcaster.” The tone that he had was the same one when he told her he wanted to learn martial arts. It caught Cecilia’s attention.

β€œGo on.”

He told her how he wanted to be better in spell casting, how slow he can be and how he fumbled his incantations and messed up his wand movements. β€œYou’re the best spellcaster that I know.” he continued, words that had earned him a tutoring from his 5th year friend almost everyday. The first step was reading. Yes, reading and after hearing that, Oziel let out the most painful groan as someone who hated studying and reading. He prefers hands-on experience but Cecilia made him read through books of spells to be familiar with the incantations and wand gestures. He almost gave up on it but after a couple of teasing from the older girl, Oziel persevered as he didn’t want to look like a quitter. The incantations that he had trouble memorizing before had become easier with a goal in mind. The same goes for the wand gestures. Even after their study session, he would start doing practices in his free time.

Faster, clear, precise, those were his goals.

He started off with a simple spell that has a simple gesture to practice his speed. In the beginning, he still kept messing it up, somehow found a few spells backfiring at him with Cecilia needing to treat him with a burn healing paste after being burned by his own Incendio. Days passed, the training that he’d been doing was starting to come into fruition. It had become easier to do the wand gestures with precision. He was careful to make fewer mistakes but at the same time, quick so he could catch his opponents off-guard with his spell. This had become a part of his routine in perfecting his spell casting.

A young Helios slammed his hands down on the table.

"I'm gonna learn how to talk to dragons!" He squawked cheerfully.

"You can't talk to dragons," Hecate said as he helped their mum's owl, Horace, with his pin feathers.

"Why not? Mum can talk to snakes! I can talk to dragons, just watch!"

"You can't even find a dragon."

"I can! And I did!"

"That was a lizard!"

"No, it wasn't!"

"Boys!" Their mother, Donna, scolded from another room. "What is going on in here?" She walked in, hands on her hips, slightly disappointed look on her face.

"Helios thinks he can talk to dragons!"

"I think I can learn to talk to dragons!" Helios turned to where his mother was standing. "You can talk to snakes, so I can too, right?"

Donna sighed and set a hand on Helios's head.

"Nope. And neither can Hecate. Besides, talking to snakes isn't all that fun." Helios pouted.

"But-"

"Why don't you just read about dragons until you're older. Then you can try and research them. From a safe distance."

"This is bull-"

"Language!" Donna snapped, though not angry, just shocked. "Where did you even learn that?"

"Dunno." The answer was Mori, but he wasn't about to tell his mum that.
A couple of days later saw Helios at the park with Stella.

"I think my cousin knows mermish," Stella shouted down from a tall tree. She had her legs locked around one of the lower limbs and was hanging upside-down off of it, hair going in all different directions. Helios himself was on ground duty today, looking underneath rocks and in suspicious mounds of sand and dirt.

"Who would want to talk to mermaids when you could talk to dragons!" Helios said, only slightly exasperated. Stella gave a considering hum that was almost lost to the wind.
Months after that, Helios's aunt Lea came for a visit. At one point, she went into the kitchen to talk to Helios's mom. He followed silently, maybe just a little curious about what they were talking about.

"I get the feeling he's never going to grow out of this dragon obsession."

"Nothing wrong with that, Don. Besides, the kid's 7, he's got plenty of time to keep this up or drop it." Lea hummed thoughtfully. "I could always take the boys for a weekend. Give you a break." There was a moment of silence, and Helios couldn't see what might have been happening in there.

"You know what? Sure."

And this is how Helios wound up sat in front of Cornflakes, Lea's pet boa constrictor.

"Alright Heeli. All you have to do is repeat after me," Lea said with a bright smile.

What she proceeded to say next was completely unintelligible to her poor little nephew. It was some kind of harsh hissing that Helios couldn't dream of replicating.

"It's just introducing yourself!" As if Cornflakes had never met Helios.

"Hisss- ah shhh?" He tried. The way his aunt's face scrunched implied she was holding back a laugh.

"G-good job kid, but uh, lets try again, shall we?"

And so went the next hours. The next days. Helios and Hecate were returned home, but Aunt Lea dropped by more often, practically daily. Lea would explain what she was saying, say it in parseltongue, and coax Helios to repeat it. He never got it down.

After weeks, there was no noticeable improvement. But, something did happen. Something subtle. Something growing. And Helios noticed it more and more often when his aunt was trying to teach him. He wasn't able to speak parseltongue, but he was starting to understand.

It came to a head during a family gathering. It was a small celebration in honor of Lea making her way up in the world of potions. Some recognition for something Helios couldn't remember. Everyone said it was a big deal though.

Lea was at the front of the table, holding up a glass and saying a speech.

"And I'd like to thank all my family for celebrating with me today! You all here at this table, really means so much!"

"And those of us who aren't at the table?" A voice Helios didn't immediately recognize spoke up. Lea laughed.

"Yes, yes. You three are great and I'm glad you could be bothered to join us as well." Lea said, humor and sarcasm lilting her tone.

"Three?" Helios asked, grabbing the attention of every adult in the room. Lea's face, which had been in a near constant smile all day, somehow looked more excited.

"You know what I said?" She asked joyously.

"Um... I think so?"

"Why are we surprised? He's Donna's boy." Helios turned to look at the speaker. At first, he thought it was Lucky, Aunt Lea's other snake, an Emerald Gazer. But, looking closer, this coil of reptile was different. Longer, more tired looking, if a snake could really look tired.

"We're surprised because unlike YOU, we've heard the boy try to talk to us." Cornflake, yet another new voice (making Lucky the first snake who spoke,) said. Helios flushed pink.

"He can understand you." Donna snapped. All three snakes looked over to Helios, who quickly looked away.

"So. Are you going to fill the rest of us in on this conversation?" Aunt June asked her sisters.

"I think they're just arguing." Helios explained. June looked at him for a long moment before sighing.

"Okay. We've got another one."

"I don't know if he counts," Lea said. "I mean- He hasn't actually said anything at all." She looked over to the snakes and recounted what was said.

"But he understands, does he not?" The other Emerald Gazer said. "I think that much is at least worth something."

"Who is that?" Helios asked, wanting a name to go with the snake.

"Donnie Jr. Your mum's snake." Lea answered.

"Mum has a snake?" Hecate spoke up, not quite sure what was happening.

"He lives with your aunt June." Donna said, too quick. There was something there, but Helios wasn't going to question it.

Hecate was staring at Helios as the adults and snakes continued conversing. He narrowed his eyes suspiciously.

"You'll tell me if you learn how to talk to dragons, right?"

"Right." Helios nodded.
