"Ugh…" groaned Aida as the flapping of the beast master's owl’s wings signaled Scheherazade’s intensifying disapproval and impatience.

"Come on and fight me, huh? Don't just stand there making yourselves comfortable. Let's go!" Aida pouted with a clenched hand on each hip. "Do you think you're being kind to me or something? Let's finish this."

Dmitri threw his hands up in the air as the stubborn Fulgari finally unraveled itself from around him.

Finally.

However, unwilling to get up from his already-comfortable position on the floor, the boy simply did a stretch, lazily and limply pointed his wand at the remaining Ravenclaw and remarked, "You know, I think the kinder thing to do is to knock your lights out like your lovely companions, but turns out they're pretty evil."

He'd throw a knowing look at Astrea and Bridget at this, silently acknowledging the fact that both of the younger girls took those two Ravenclaws down for him.

"On-brand if I do say so, myself."

Aida might be annoyed by it, but frankly Bridget's choice to heal had nothing to do with them. It wasn't a kindess by any means--this was a duel, not a meeting of friends, and she was plenty used to taking opponents out--but rather a way of securing their victory. The numbers advantage they'd gained would mean nothing if she and Astrea swiftly went down, too, and as much faith as she had in Dmitri's skill, she would rather not leave that up to chance.

The healing spell working its magic felt like the first rain after months of summer heat. The relief was worth it; with the worst of the burn wounds appeased, she could focus a lot less on the stinging and a lot more on the duelling.

4th November 2023- Morning

Boring. The duel had grown boring. Securing victory was an understandable desire, but doing so in such a safe way was yawn inducing. Galton's ears almost missed the assault that had been the constant explosions at the start of the match (or maybe that was the ringing).

The spell choice was like a case of déjà vu with the names swapped. Bridget would heal once again, and Dmitri would take up Astrea's role of spell spreading reparifors. Perhaps Astrea was so confident in their ability to win she would just do nothing. Aida would cast another flipendo.

Purple light once again radiated from the piste. The three instances of reparifors enveloped Bridget and Astrea; Bridget's with a particular intensity from the double dose. Aida's own ball of purple hurt would veer off almost immediately. It seemed nerves had gotten to them once again. Galton couldn't blame them. Staring down two of the oldest duelists would be unsettling enough, if it weren't for the extra aura of unease they each emitted.

At the end the Vipers looked a tad fresher. Maybe they thought they could escape a health check from the mediwizards if they healed enough? Galton had his doubts though, no way they'd let someone involved in so many explosions go without at least a brief check. At this pace though, that wouldn't happen for awhile.

"Come on and fight me…! What are you guys doing!?" Aida waved both hands in the air. That Astrea student didn't seem to be doing anything. Lobbing a flipendo in her direction in frustration, Aida really, really didn't want this to be a boring match. Was it just imagination, or was Astrea actually doing something very menacing by simply standing there frozen? The thoughts began spinning in Aida's head, dwelling on what horrid magic might lash out from the apparently motionless student. It was very distracting, causing Aida to lose focus and miss their shot.

"You're creeping me out, just standing there... Come on, aren't we supposed to be playing? Show me what you've got!"

Playing... What a word to describe a duel that had left the piste shockingly damaged and two duellists unconscious. So this was how Merlin's best viewed their little encounters. A Viper tried and true, Astrea could not imagine such potentially vicious combat as little more than a childish game.

In the absence of multiple opponents to track, Astrea's unwavering silver gaze — never one to wander towards her chatty teammates or the ever-changing moderator once the duel began — had focused solely on their remaining target. She hadn't done a single thing, her magic an electric force under her skin, yet it seemed that presence alone had temporarily thrown off the albino mage’s aim. Unbothered by the wide-flying signature red Knockback Jinx, their endless stream of team healing would not wait in the same way that Astrea did for the peculiarly aggravated Ravenclaw. Truly, she had overestimated the wit of their opposition, if even an unconcerned, unmoving target could remain undamaged in a single round's time. A missed opportunity, but one that proved Astrea's brief — if not entirely curiosity-driven — experimentation futile... for now.

Dmitri chuckled. "Isn't it ironic how you are the one complaining about 'not playing'?"

The boy crossed his arms. "Weren't you the duelists who ended last year's match in a draw by barely even fighting and oh wait, yes, healing."

Letting out a full-blown cackle at this, Dmitri continued, "Funny how 'a taste of your own medicine' could be literal sometimes. Too bad, this time we win."

Would she agree that simply healing again was boring? Yes, but it was like any of the non-magical sports she’d grown up watching. When a team had the lead, they tried to slow down the action, to play keep-away. Boring didn’t matter if it was smart.

She was a bit concerned about Astrea’s lull in action, but at least she avoided Aida’s Flipendo and looked just fine. Dmitri was busy giving some sort of speech full of vaguely villainous laughs, dramatic enough that Bridget couldn’t help but smile a bit. This time we win, indeed.

Lucky for Galton, and the audience, the Viper's fixation on healing was at an end. The round would return to the normal exchange of spells. Even some explosions! He had just thought about how he was starting to miss those.

Dmitri used his new found freedom to dazzle the crowd with an offendo; it seems his relaxation session went to good use. With crisp pronunciation and solid wand pointing, no one would be able to say he didn't know how to cast. Astrea and Bridget would look to make use of Dmitri's opening, with two other spells the crowd hadn't seen this match: Nec Divinos Crepitus and Confundo. Astrea would be able to cast the unruly cracker jinx without it blowing back on herself. On the other side of piste, Aida would surprise everyone with another Flipendo.

Aiming while being tripped was not easy, but Aida was able to send a fair shot Astrea's way. Astrea though, would have no trouble displaying how one was able to dodge to their fullest when you weren't being tripped. But while her dodging was good, her aim had been abysmal. It must have been strange for her to be in a similar presence to her own, to feel what most others felt when they were around her. She would feel like Aida just had, some terribly unsettling thing distracting you ever so slightly, pulling your magic towards it. But while Aida would not need to worry about the crackers, the confundo would easily find her. Mind altering mist would make its way into their system, replacing memories for a time. Casting flipendo three times in a row did have the advantage that there was less variety to lose, but what would Aida do without it?

Time is closing in on our match, will Aida be able to make a confused move to clutch victory from the Viper's tight coil?!

"Ugh, you guys are taking forever! Don't you have things to study after this!? Don't act like this is summer vacation or something!" Aida groaned. Not a lot was happening and due to the slow pace of the duel, invasive thoughts about upcoming exams and reports were beginning to creep back into memory. Dueling was supposed to be an escape, believed the wix, and this was no longer the blood-pumping thrill Aida had been hoping for.
