2021 Stage 3 Group A: Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw Finished

The Ravenclaw tactic had primarily comprised of blinding and burning their opponents, yet once on his own, Pericles decided to switch methods. Bubbles were likely the last thing to be expected after his persisting role as a flamethrower, though he seemed certain of this course. Confidence didn't suffice to pull the plan off. A mellow frown of inconvenience bowed while he watched the orbs roll away anticlimactically, only to be dashed by an intense grimace of shock and pain when he was lifted from his feet. Reflexive instinct tucked his chin to protect his head, clenched his teeth to avoid clacking, and encouraged a vice grip around his wand. He had only a moment to brace, then came the second impact.

Stars exploded across Pericles' vision as he struck the stage. The sight and sound of the crowd faded from perception as he realized, with a pang of panic, that he couldn't breathe. Curled on his side, eyes and mouth wide, he painted the haunting picture of a ghost in torments. Alarm clashed with the calm, consistent logic in his head, reminding him that such a blow could cause a spasm in the diaphragm. He would be fine, he just needed to focus. Pericles became vaguely aware of Santario moving beyond the lights in his eyes. Her presence was inspiration to dazedly force himself up, shaking his head in bleary reassurance. He wasn't done yet, not until he was out cold, as it wasn't the Murder of Merlin way to forfeit over a little pain. One either left as a victor or on a stretcher.

As Pericles finally found his breath again, and was in the process of finding his footing, he heard Alec's apology. One of those shaky breaths became a scoff and smile- not the scornful sort, mind, but a huff of perplexed (if amused) air. It wasn't that he didn't appreciate the sentiment, it was still a surprise. Where had this gentlemanly opponent been all of his duelling life? He supposed if he was going to be taken out, he wouldn't mind it so much from someone with manners. That didn't mean he meant to make the matter easy. Still at a loss of voice, Pericles could only manage a small nod and instigating inward wave, wordlessly insisting that he didn't expect any less from an opponent.
As strategized.

Pericles stands back up and rejoins the duel.
Santario’s sapphire eyes slid to the lion as he barely breathed out his hope that his opponent would be okay. The boy had a heart which seemed to be something of a rare commodity these days. Though the thought in itself was perhaps something more tragic and more eluding to the troubles they faced in this school.

Wishing his opponent to be okay would not stop Alec from trying to win as he sent another Flipendo towards Pericles. He tried his best to scramble out of the way as he stood up, but alas, the insult would be added to injury as the blue energy caught his non-dominant arm. Thankfully, this one would not find him on the ground again; no, the young Eagle would stand his ground. Perhaps a little more disheveled than he would like to be as the pain would start to ebb through his chest and arm, but his pride might have taken the bigger blow.

Hogwarts had introduced Pericles to the concept of competition. He had little in the way of sports experience before attending school and making friends, joining clubs, learning to have pride in his school House. As most twelve-year-olds, he took readily to the concept. Duelling was, above all else, an opportunity to hone his skills and better himself as a magic-user. But beneath that, it was a chance to dignify Ravenclaw, a tantalizing notion to most children. His fears of being burnt and bruised were minute in comparison to his dread for losing. Pericles could not restrain a wince when his right arm took the brute impact of a Flipendo, though the strain setting into his pale features was less to do with his deteriorating health. These were dire straits. He was on his feet again, the knuckles of his left hand white around his wand, struggling to resume the grace and light-footed stance he favored, formerly enabling him to dance from the path of spells. He was beginning to miss Dealla's banter and its propensity for lightening the mood.

With this gone and done. Alec had gained the confidence he needed to go on. He could do this and he could get them a victory. Even if he felt bad about it. His spell had gone well, he supposed he couldn't take in how well since the ravenclaw had been down. Yet nonetheless for finally having this working out in his favor Alec would take it. Alec readied his wand to get ready for his next plan of action.

Blazing heat scorched its way across the arena towards Alec, something he would not have time to get out of the way of as he cast his own Flipendo. The fire would finally do its job as the side of Alec’s robes caught on fire and his skin burned. While he was on fire, he would be able to tell that this fire would not last too long, but it would be long enough to cause him extra damage if he decided not to take care of it.

Blue light fueled by new passion and confidence sailed through the air at Pericles, who only barely managed not to dodge it. The aim had not been particularly well as it hit the boy’s thigh, but it would seem that the toll taken on Pericles, whether physical or mental, was enough to put his feather-light feet in cement bricks. Though, perhaps, a renewed fight was in store as his opponent finally took damage.

Alec hadn't managed to catch what he was planning to do. Let alone what was going on when he felt flames hit him. His eyes widening at the very sight of flames. Yet this wasn't going to stop him, as the boy cast his own spell while still aflame. He hoped the aftermath of just this wouldn't be too terrible. It could be healed quickly enough once he made his way to the hospital wing. These robes were doomed though huh.

Just because the first had set Alec off. Making him uneasy, nonetheless, the ravenclaw had done well. It was a smart move. Desperate times called for desperate measures? Something like that, Alec would be fine. He just hoped he didn't look too stupid while standing there while he thought things through and burning.

Quick thumbs up maybe? Alec went for the thumbs up. After such he'd decided that was a bad move... He needed to be focusing um, oh yeah, fire, right.

Pericles could recall when he, like Alec, was more expressive about his reluctance to cast at others. Perhaps it was as shallow a matter as compartmentalizing his guilt, or perhaps it was as deep as a mutation of morals. As tenderly as he had encouraged his opponent to continue on, he showed no remorse in return, the hesitation seen earlier gone. Pain and strain were only a wince there and a twitch here. Above all was resolve: a sharp, driven expression. The Murder of Merlin combatants did not resign. They either won, or were carried out from the duelling hall.

The only waver would come in the wake of that thumbs up. An expression he'd learned from a muggleborn friend, Peri found it charming. He raised his wand with one hand, returned the motion with the other, a cringe of discomfort disguised with a tense grin.

This would be the final build-up between the boys as they squared off. Pericles undoubtedly on his last leg, at least as far as Santario could tell, if Alec hit, she did not this he would survive it. It was something she had become good at noticing throughout the year between being a moderator and being an undefeated duellest. Though she supposed she did go unconscious in her first match, but they still won regardless.

She observed as both opponents cast Flipendo, blue lights battling for the dominance of the field shining brightly as they passed each other. Each would strike home.

Alec, having chosen not to put out the fire, an intelligent strategy in this case, would feel it bite into his skin before puttering out. Just in time for Pericles’ Flipendo to crash into him. That was the one thing about being on fire, it tended to be a little distracting, but it was not enough to knock him off his feet, only knock the air from his lungs.

At the same time, Pericles was only one footstep away from dodging Alec’s Flipendo. Unfortunately, he would not share Alec’s fate of remaining on his feet. He would at least have the chance to see that his spell hit home before his body would crumple to the ground, darkness ultimately claiming him for its own.

“CEASE FIRE! Santario demanded as Pericles started to go down. She was not convinced that he would be getting back up again. Rushing over, she knelt by his side for a moment before waving in the medical aids. Given them the room they needed, she returned to the middle of the area facing the crowd and Alec, but mostly the crowd. “Congratulations to GRYFFINDOR!” The crowd erupted into cheers for the young Lion as San turned to him. “This was a well-deserved win. congratulations, Alec.” With that, Santario removed herself from the arena to officially report the victory.

Pericles' eyes shone with a bright blend of pain and purpose. A single bead of sweat broke his brow, ignored as it trailed down his temple. He felt the Flipendo erupt from his wand with a crackle of energy, watched it strike, and donned a bleary smile. One more, he wagered, just one more hit ought to end it. But he too was a single strike away from defeat, and although Pericles clung to dogged determination until unconscious, he would not be the one to deal the final blow. The returned blue bolt was registered a moment too late. That unfocused smile would quirk, jerking down into a moderately inconvenienced frown, as if the incoming spell was troublesome but otherwise incapable of ending things. He was fiiine, he could take it, was his fleeting mentality before the blow struck and darkness took over.
