A night for beginnings
Talking with @Haley Rose
There was a smile.
Simon was expecting one of two things from his latest action - either a hard slap across his face or a smile on the girl that was before him and luckily, the odds were in his favor and there was a smile. Still, he wanted to let her know that just because he non-verbally admitted his feelings that it meant the end of an era of their playfulness.
Wow. It was an interjection most used to show that one was very surprised or very shocked. Simon decided he would play with that a bit "Wow as in showing the feeling of shock? Horror? Excitement? Surprise? I uhh, I've actually wanted to do that since our evening out in the Courtyard." Maybe even before then.
They temporarily weren't dancing and he looked down, taking her hand into his own. He hoped that he hadn't made anything uncomfortable between them but wasn't too worried, again - she smiled! He took a step closer to her, slipping his other hand then back to her waist so they were back in the dancing position they had been in previous to his action.
"You know, I'm not meaning to give you any suggestions here but I sort of dreaded that maybe instead of a smile I'd get a strong bitchslap across the face instead. I'm glad that wasn't the case. Might have damaged the ego a little and made me worry about us."

Michael froze as the green haired boy began to talk down to him. The once confidence boy nearly shrunk under his stern look and hurtful words. He felt a lump form in his throat and tears slowly form in his eyes, humiliation in front of Percy being nearly to much for the boy. As the older student threw a handkerchief in the boys face, it snapped Michael out of his thoughts, and he tried to catch the piece of cloth but to no luck. The piece of fabric fall to the floor and the boy knelt down to get it, quickly wiping away one lone tear that fell from his movements. He rose back up, and not knowing what to do with the boy's handkerchief, as he had turned his attention to the boy's date instead, Michael just held it.
He was looking down silently when he heard Percys reply to the new boy, making his head snap up to look at the boy. He had taken up for him. Michael smiled slightly in thanks, but kept quiet.
Soon another boy came over, Eden, and commented about one thing or another, Michael barely being able to keep up, only knowing his rose caught the boy's attention. "Oh, yeah, Whites my favorite colour, thats why i wore it" he said with a smile.

Haley smirked at Simon's playful remark, but inwardly she jumped when he mentioned that he had already wanted to do that when they met at the Courtyard. Even if Simon didn't know it, Haley felt the same way, she just never would have had the courage to make the first move. "Hmm let me think for a minute." She pretended to brood to herself. Then she whispered softly, as if talking to herself. "Horrified or shocked?" again she made a long drawn out "hmm" and pretended she was still thinking about what she said until she started to smile and looked at Simon again. "Let's call it positive surprise."
The two started dancing again and Haley enjoyed being close to Simon again. While she had a bit of a desire to do it all over again, she also just wanted to be here with him and dance. Suddenly Haley's mind drifted and the most random thoughts came into her head. What if it was just a bet? She already knew such stories and had always hoped that it wouldn't happen to her. But she dropped this thought as quickly as it had come. She knew Simon, at least she knew 100% that the Simon she knew would never do something like that and she didn't worry about it anymore. But what did that mean for the two of them now? Would everything be the same as before? Would anything be different? Before Haley could rack her brains any further, Simon's words brought her back.
She started laughing - bitchslap - that suited her. "Good to know you think of me that way!" she joked. There was no way she was going to give Simon Kincaid a bitchslap. Apart from the fact that she could never stand a chance against him on a purely physical level, she could never bring herself to hurt him on purpose. Well, at least she couldn't think of anything he could do to make her hit him. "Only the best for your ego" she joked further now and rolled her eyes. "But why worry about us?" asked Haley now curiously. Of course she knew that it was never good for a relationship to hit each other, but Haley hoped to find out what Simon thought about them. What was this us?
The song they were dancing to ended and before either of them could say anything Haley belly started grumbling loudly. Like it did when they were dancing in the corridors and Haley couldn't help but laugh. "Uh I guess dancing still makes me hungry."

Paige stood there as Michael reacted to the sharp words said to him. She had been standing here for a full five minutes and she was struggling with the drinks. With her temper. With the tears trying to form in her eyes. She was upset with with the green haired boy. But when she tried to talk she could barely push out a whisper. "Live him alone, you jerk." That was all she could say. She's lost herself, she thought. She looked down.
She turned around. Her heart stopped. Simon was missing Haley. Now, Paige was really close to Simon. Like, super close. She was having a terrible day. She was frustrated. Angry. Upset. And embarrassed. She spun towards Michael. Her voice was barely above a whisper. But you could tell she was hurt. "I'm a joke to you, aren't I? Poor muggle born Paige won't know a thing!" She was beginning to think this was a joke. Being that she was the muggle born and Percy and Michael were pure bloods. Paige should have known. Really she should have. No boy has ever liked her. Ever. But she was blind by joy when Michael asked her. The tears finally sprung up. She ran off, slamming the cups into the garbage, the lunch splashing a bit on her dress.

Talking over a meal with @Haley Rose
He smiled. It made sense though as this ball was right between supper time there at Hogwarts. That must be why the founder of the club thought it was important to have various things to eat and Simon took Haley's hand as the two headed back over to the tables.
Simon asked one of the elves for a bit of the main dish, whatever it was. ...Boeuf Bourguignon? It was something he had never heard of before and his aunt was practical a chef (well, a baker) but it had meat in it and therefore it made it the most palatable of all the options there.
It was probably during this time that Paige made her escape because when the two headed back to the tables to sit, there was no sort of commotion going on (well, despite some from a few but none of it caught Simon's attention). To be perfectly honest, he was a little unfocused that night, as he wasn't so much focused on the PURE ball itself but instead making it an evening to remember with his date. It had already been that.
"After we've finished eating, maybe we can skip out a little early? Go for a walk?" he proposed the idea. Again, he had heard of what events at Hogwarts usually became and before this night was ruined he wanted to end it on a positive note.
"And if you want to dance some more we could dance in the corridors."
In the back of his mind he remembered what she asked, sort of emphasizing the word 'us.' Simon wasn't avoiding that part of the conversation, it was more that he truly didn't know. Were they an us yet? SHOULD they be an us? The last thing he wanted to do was make any sort of mistake with this interconnection between he and Haley Rose.

A night for beginnings
Haley quietly followed Simon to the table and while he was talking to one of the elves, she saw something happen between Simon's friend Paige and a few more students she didn't know. Haley accepted the food gratefully and started to eat a little. Meanwhile, she continued to look in the direction where Paige had just been, but she was gone. Haley realized it too late and didn't know what had happened. Or If something had happened or if she had just left for a moment.
Haley turned her attention back to Simon and the food and smiled at his words. "That sounds like a good idea." However, her thoughts still circled around Simon's friend. She took a few bites of her food but it seemed like her hunger had suddenly passed.
Haley had a bad feeling and if something had really happened, she was sure that Paige needed a friend now. And if nothing had happened, then maybe Haley would feel a little ridiculous, but that didn't bother her at that moment. "Um Simon, but maybe we could push this back a little?" she looked at him a little sadly, because that was really the last thing she wanted. "I don't know if anything happened, I saw it too late, but I think you should check on Paige for a minute." She smiled briefly at him and took a sip from her cup. She was unsure but believed this was the right decision. "We can just meet back outside the ballroom in 30 minutes or so?" Haley wouldn't want the evening to end here and really hoped Simon would go for it.
Haley knew how to manage on her own. Even if she knew almost no one here she would find something to do, or she would take the opportunity to talk to Sarah if she had time. Or she would simply use the short moment of rest for herself and her thoughts.

Departing with @Haley Rose for the moment to find @Paige Chase
He looked around curiously, wondering where Paige was but she was no longer near Michael. He then stood from the table and Haley explained why she had thought this was the best idea. Simon hadn't noticed the interaction but he did know that Paige seemed to be having a rather rough night and he was glad his date didn't mind, and even brought it up, that he go check on her.
Simon excused himself, taking a lass from the refreshment table and bringing the punch back over to Haley with a smile before leaning down, kissing her forehead gently. "I'll see you soon," he whispered to her. Again, that idea of 'us' came into his mind and he wondered if they were going to have to put a title on this or something but that was a different conversation for a different time.
From there he left Haley at the table and scanned the room, checking to see if she wasn't talking with another or maybe off in a corner doing some crafting or reading. No, no Paige Chase. So he left the Ballroom temporarily and found himself just outsides in the corridors. He hated that it seemed Paige was having a rough night and wanted to find her, to understand what was happening and to help her feel better.
Thinking she wouldn't have probably gone far, as she usually retreated to a tree (from what he heard anyway) he looked over his shoulder for her. "Paige?" he said, pausing. Would she even want to talk to him? Had he not somewhat added to to it by spending the first part of this evening only with Haley? Sort of. At the same time, Paige had only introduced herself so briefly before heading off and now she had left the Ballroom entirely so he had assumed there could have been lots of time ahead of them.
"Paige?" he said again, and he felt maybe he could briefly hear the smallest faint of a sniffle to the left. Simon turned and took a few steps, hoping to find Paige somewhere in the shadows of the corridor.

A night for beginnings
While the green-haired young man was quite used to being stared at and had pretty much come to expect it by now, that didn't mean he was used to comments being made on his appearance; particularly not to his face. At first, he didn't think the frowning fellow was going to speak up at all; simply listen passively to his addressing of Michael. However, he ended up underestimating the underclassman when he was soon accused of projecting by an unabashed Percival Rainwood.
Intense yellow eyes studied him and only him for a few silent seconds more before thin, drawn lips parted at last with the intention to provide a response. "Not that it's any of your business," the older student answered with a quiet, chilling tone, "but on the chance your uncouth remark happens to be referencing the hue of my hair, I happened to be born this way." Though his brows had slightly narrowed, the corners of his mouth had turned up almost impercievably, as if in a whisper of amusement. His bright gaze had yet to leave Percival's starkly contrasting dark orbs, challenging the other to look away first - wordlessly daring him to refute his claim.
"The name is Isaac W. Pincus. Fourth year." His head dipped with the most minimum of movements required to define a nod of acknowledgement, however grudging. "Percival Rainwood...noted."
It was then and only then that he glanced up and away, feeling yet another set of eyes upon him. Well, there were several - most-likely trained on his hair, though he wasn't even the only green-haired individual attending that evening - but someone else was trying to be inconspicuous, which attracted his attention all the more. Isaac looked up to see the girl from earlier (Paige) watching him as she poured herself a drink. Well...if she wasn't going to approach them, then she wasn't his problem. He turned his attention elsewhere.
By then, yet another young man had joined them; one draped in ostentatious red and gold. There were so many first years, Isaac hardly bothered to try identifying them, new to the school as they were. This one, though, created quite a stir and the older boy found himself watching the younger curiously. Interestingly enough, he too, chose to avoid addressing Isaac directly, though his awareness was obviously evident when he spoke to Michael Miller instead.
Isaac decided to ignore this - disgusted mushing of lips, choking perfume, and all - right up until the pale-haired fellow complimented Michael's boutonnière of a white rose. At that, Isaac couldn't help a roll of his eyes and his sharp tounge struck yet again.
"Ah, yes...a white rose for 'purity'. How tediously trite." This time he looked straight into the white-haired firstling's impudent ocean eyes. "I can see why something so common, unoriginal, and overrated might be associated with yourself."
He wasn't the only one with a reaction to that comment, either. His derisive noise was not subdued upon hearing the girl with hair almost matching his own in hue and a chuckle from a noiret who appeared to have Asian features. At least others seemed to share Isaac's opinion that the white-haired boy was behaving ridiculously; almost as riduculously as the host of the ball.
Looking down his nose at what he regarded as an artless and ostentatious attempt at flattery, Isaac turned his head away from those who he was quickly coming to regard as a gathering of first year sychophants. Though they all seemed so deteremined to kiss up to someone they could win the favor of, no one seemed well-versed enough as of yet to sense who was really best to ally oneself with. Well...they would learn, and quickly. That, or fall disreputably off to the wayside of forgotten family names and houses, no matter their wealth or the purity of their bloodlines. In any case, it was fascinating to watch.
He was so caught up in his contemptuous thoughts that he didn't immediately realize the black-haired young man who had expressed amusement at Sarah had begun to speak to him. Something about ruffling feathers...?
"My apologies; my mind was elsewhere," he admitted with a small incline of his head. Then he sighed before eyeing the other boy with a dubious look at his new suggestion.
"Perhaps it would," Isaac conceded somewhat, "But I can assure you I am not the experienced pureblood for the job. I'm fairly certain I lack the patience and hardiness no doubt required to drive home such lessons at the very least, and that's nothing to say of time or motivation." His lips pursed. "I'm sorry; I seem to find myself at a loss for names to match with the faces in your year. Isaac Pincus, as you might have heard earlier." He decided to allow the other boy to choose whether or not he wanted to introduce his own name into the conversation.
Another girl appeared to interject that her name was Katherine Labrouder. Isaac ignored her, behaving as though she were not addressing him but only the others. He knew his stray tongue was likely to make some scandelous comment on her peculiar surname being similar to a particular dog breed if he allowed himself to verbally answer. Besides, it wasn't as though he was a member of their silly first year club and he certainly hadn't invited any of these people.
When he turned back to the boy who had invited these people, however, Isaac could hardly believe his senses. Was that boy, Michael Miller - was he about to cry? The fourth year drew himself up, taken aback. Of all the potentials he had expected in response, tears had honestly not been a possibility. Good thing he'd given him a handkerchief after all. Only...he hadn't caught it and hand to bend to pick it up, making him seem utterly more pitiful than ever. Isaac felt very peculiar; some unfamiliar emotion suddenly washing over him. Was this...could this have been what guilt felt like? Did he actually feel remorse for this wretch?
No matter; it was for his own benefit that Michael learn to toughen up. If he was weak enough to shed tears so easily in public at such a mild insult, the real world would rip him apart when he got out into it. He was lucky enough he hadn't been born into Isaac's family or he would have been soundly rebuked for his shamefully submissive and weak show of character several times over. Irritated at the thought, Isaac tore his gaze from the first year. He suppose they were only first years, though...perhaps he had forgotten just how fragile and delicate they were. Not just as students, but as people new to the ways of the world and life in general. Anyway, little point in scolding someone who would only get butt-hurt about it instead of learn from their mistakes.
Speaking of getting butt-hurt...the girl from earlier had finally seemed to gather herself enough to come over and yell at them. First she yelled at him, Isaac, to 'leave him alone' - presumably Michael. But then she asked if Michael thought she was a joke, which Isaac quickly decided was none of his business.
Ugh...first years... With a quiet groan, he reached up to rub his temples and massage the bridge of his nose, almost certain of the start of a headache coming on.

Jack re-adjusted the lapels of his jacket, feeling a bit awkward. As a gesture of good will between two founders of the P.U.R.E. and M.M.M. Clubs, Jack had allowed Michael Miller to pick his outfit for the P.U.R.E. ball and had resolved to wear whatever would have been chosen for him. The idea to hold a ball as what Jack assumed was the first meeting of his club struck the Welsh boy as typical of what he knew of purebloods, but he was entertained and amused anyway. After all, he was still trying to get a grip on what to expect from them, having been born and raised a muggle himself.

When he got there, however, Jack was not expecting the place to be overrun with unfamiliar faces. Normally he didn't mind strangers; preferred them, even, to people he knew or those who knew him in return. However, the knowledge that most of the students before him, despite likely being his underclassmen, probably thought themselves superior to him in family status gave him a peculiar sensation of...it couldn't have been intimidation, could it have?
Well, these kids were far more knowledgable in the ways of the wizarding world than he was. But, as he reminded himself, they were just as naive about the muggle world as he was about purebloods, probably. The difference was that they were currently in their world - their habitat. He would have to be careful, but all in all, the thrill Jack felt was more of happy excitement than the anxious kind. He really did enjoy a good challenge, after all, and it'd seemed to have been so long since he'd had a decent one.
Besides...what better people to discuss blood politics with than first year purebloods who had no idea who or what he was?
Vigor renewed, he cheerfully strode into the party...only to discover some interesting dynamics already underway. Though most of the people attending already he might have guessed to be purebloods by their appearances, there sill seemed to be some confrontation and perhaps a bit of a commotion going on. Some girl had exclaimed in hurt tones that she thought she was a joke and a...wait. She was a muggle-born, too?
Oh, shit. She was one of the ones who'd signed up for the M.M.M club; Jack remembered now. Since it had mostly been Wren who'd wanted to start the thing, he hadn't invested too much into it, but he remembered Paige. She had been a more recent member because she was just a first year. What was happening now, then? Had one of the purebloods already hurt her feelings?
He started toward her, noticing she was so distressed she had spilled some drink on her dress, and grabbed some napkins on the way. As he went, he saw a pair of two other students also headed in her same direction. Two other first years, perhaps? Jack hoped they weren't more people in his own club he'd forgotten. Ah well; he supposed he'd find out very soon regardless.
"...Chase?" he called, walking briskly after the other girl. How ironic to be...well, 'chasing' Chase. "Are you alright? What happened?"
