Hi! I have a suggestion about the discord server — maybe we could put in a shop channel where people can notify about offers and things instead of having to post in #ic-thread-sharing. It could be exclusively for when your shop has a sale/deals/offers so that it doesn't get too clogged up?

Discord Suggestion:

Discord channels for each year, titled first-year-public, second-year-public, etc. which don't require a role to enter (made known with the public) but are intended for each year to use. Other years can enter if they want but they mainly allow for discussions year specific, like homework and events.
Rename them at the end of the year to the above year and add a new. At the end, turn them into alumni 20XX.

I always want to talk to my year group more than Ravenclaws group.

I'm not on the discord, but if this happened it might be easier for mods to name them Entry 2020 for first years, Entry 2019 for second years, ect, so you wouldn't have to change them

This has been discussed a few times in staff but it's always been a 'no'. Unfortunately, it's not as simple as it sounds. Since people go inactive, change accounts (deactivate + then reactivate), get held back a year etc that the original year group won't necessarily be the same. It requires constant moderation - a lot more than people realise, to be honest - to make sure the user groups are accurate.

As for the channels, the admin team have... a ridiculous amount of channels to read through as it is. It also means more channels to moderate for the staff team. I understand the idea behind it but it starts to add up when we intend on continuing on for many years (The French Site is over 10 years old). Long-term, it's not an ideal strategy.

This is probably a lot more work than I imagine- it would be cool if the magical menagery also sold pet supplies such as toys and treats.
That's just a thought that came to me, not sure if it's realistic.

I have a suggestion for the discord server. The idea is to switch on slow mode in the general channel.

Why
At the moment there are times when it can move overwhelmingly fast. The way it is now, I feel new users or people not “in the know” could easily get left behind or give up trying to join in. I understand there are also many other channels people can chat in, but the term “general” implies a place where anyone should be able to go and talk to others. The incredibly fast paced conversations could instead be moved to the “spam” channel. The idea would be not to curtail people’s conversations but to keep things at a pace where people can keep up and will find it easier to get involved.

Here are some pros and cons of the suggestion:

Pros
The conversations in the channel are easier to keep up with and follow as they are moving at a slower speed.

New users stand a better chance of joining in, establishing a presence and getting to know others.

The channel becomes more accessible for those with a slower reading speed, learning disability or have English as a second language.

Cons
Anyone wishing to engage in that rapid fire style of conversation would no long be able to do so in that channel. (However, there is a spam channel which seems more suited to this purpose.)

Not sure if there are any other cons I haven’t thought of.

Unfortunately, it really is a lot of work. Any coding (and shops need coding) needs to be done by Zach, who isn't around at the moment, and once he's back there's a priority list already for when he has the time. Can't really do much about that stuff.

There used to be an image uploader built in to the site, but it was removed since there were just so many images that wanted uploading - the server doesn't have enough space
