26TH OF JUNE, 2026 IN THE JUNGLE ARENA
MODERATION — ROUND TWO.
Stakes rose as the two teams closed in on each other. Santiago watched, fully engaged, as the players mixed in zone two and three. Some ran straight ahead without notice, meanwhile others would find themselves face to face with an enemy. Besides from the threat of their opponents, only zone three was spared from the harsh nature of the jungle. With the unexpected motivation provided by an anaconda frightening him into producitivity, @Aodhan Shaw redeemed his previous failures by completing the trap he'd been attempting to construct the previous round. To make matters slightly less embarrassing, he also succeeded in dodging the anaconda, though whether that counted as a victory was debatable.

Done watching the boy with the faltering drive, Santiago focused his attention on the other zones. He feared @Evpraksiya Vinogradova, @Meiyu Xiang and @Charlotte Winfield would get unrealistic expectations if this luck continued, brining the good weather with them into zone three. Meanwhile, the rest of the Toucans who had stayed behind would find themselves in a monsoon, the rain flooding what little ground had remained relatively dry. The entirety of zone two had, in the matters of a few minutes, turned into a complete swamp, water up to their ankles.

Even knee-deep in the watery mud, the group still found time to banter among themselves. He could not distinguish what @Hana Bakir and @Fire Davis was saying, just that it had been amusing, judging by the laughter that echoed all the way to his observation spot. Any trace of humor instantly died as soon as @Jamie Saeng opened his mouth. Some interpersonal dilemma seemed to be the topic of conversation, though at this distance, most of it was a guessing game. In other words, utterly irrelevant to the game and to Santiago, who could think of little else he would rather avoid than listening to pre-teen drama.

Rolling his eyes, he briefly reflected on how difficult it had been to be their age, and how grateful he was that period of his life was behind him—and even more grateful that he was not among them in zone two. @Livia Machavariani, he imagined, had wisely disregarded the uninteresting chatter to accomplish something on her team's behalf: constructing a trap. At a glance, the girl did not appear particularly suited to the jungle environment with her thin, lanky build, but Santiago found himself pleasantly surprised by her resourcefulness.

While the Toucans outmaneuvered the rain, @Avery Gray and @Diana Roberts had entered the zone, two lone macaws among enemies. The latter sank deep into the mud, her shoes becoming trapped so thoroughly that intervention was required to free her before she became part of the environment herself. On the bright side, at least the zone was already soaked, considering the waterfall that dominated the area.

Whatever was about to happen in zone three had piqued his interest for once. While the environment itself remained uneventful, the even distribution of players from both teams meant there was genuine potential for action. Despite having plenty of room to explore, @Mikey Forville failed to search for the flag, leaving both himself and his team no closer to discovering its whereabouts. The other boy, @Joseph Sims, could be found standing aimlessly among the trees, waiting for Merlin knew what.

The thick mist in zone four left much to the imagination. Hidden behind the whiteout, @Emiline Hunter became disoriented, though it was rather fortunate that it was her, as she had little else to accomplish after finishing her trap. @Olivia Williams, still ensnared by the Iara's illusion, made no effort to move this round. Aside from those simply relocating to a zone where there were no obstacles to face, Team Scarlet Macaw had made little meaningful progress during the round. Focusing on the few positives, Santiago decided it was about damn time Lauren and Bree were escorted out of the arena and replaced by two other girls. Hopefully, their replacements would prove more productive.

HOW TO PLAY

The game ends when either team successfully retrieved the other teams flag to their base. Team Toucan will be starting the game in Zone 1 and Team Scarlet Macaw will be in Zone 4 at the opposite end of the arena. There will be at most 10 rounds, each requiring a post of 200+ words. Please make sure you include your character's stats in your post.

During the first round only, each team must state which zone their flag is hidden in to the thread moderator. You may chose to hide the flag in any of the 4 zones. The flag remains in that zone unless successfully discovered or moved through gameplay mechanics. Do not reveal in game where the flag is located.

Each round, everyone in the team must make at least one action from the Capture the Flag actions list, unless they are unable to act due to a status effect or restriction. These actions are zone dependent. The team scores points by making successful flag actions or interceptive actions towards a flag carrier. Please note that players may only move between adjacent zones and cannot skip zones while travelling.

At the conclusion of each round, the zone state map will be updated to reflect all player locations. Players may only target characters who are in the same zone as them at the end of the previous round. If a target moves out of the zone during the following movement phase, the action automatically fails, with the exception of Flag Intercept and non-magical support actions that include a chase mechanic. When performing these actions, the player automatically follows the target into the destination zone as part of the interaction.

If the action fails while chasing, the pursuing player is left behind in the original zone while the target successfully gains distance.

Rules regarding roll resolution, action priority, and other game mechanics can be found HERE.

At least one member of the team must owl the entire teams' action list to @Santiago Peralta before the posting deadline.

DEADLINE IS 216* HOURS (9 days) FROM THIS POST
*An extension has been provided because I will be hiking from on 11th to 19th july, so moderation will happen on the 19th.

He'd been moving through the rainforest for what felt like ages, and if someone asked him what he'd actually accomplished, he wasn't sure he had a good answer. Plenty of walking. Plenty of looking around. A decent amount of getting distracted. Actual progress? That was a different story. The jungle wasn't making things easy. Everywhere he looked seemed to blend into the next stretch of trees. Thick vines wrapped themselves around enormous trunks, roots pushed through the ground like old bones, and every direction looked almost identical. He had no idea how anyone who lived here managed to tell one place from another. Then again, maybe they didn't.

He'd spent far too much of the game simply reacting. First there had been the monkeys, then all the strange noises coming from somewhere beyond the trees, and after that he'd found himself wandering without much of a plan. It hadn't been intentional. Every time he thought he was about to accomplish something, another distraction had appeared and that wasn't going to help his team. Mikey rested a hand against the rough bark of a nearby tree, thinking back to football practices in Liverpool. His coach used to tell them that good players didn't just chase the ball. They watched everything happening around them. Where people moved, where they hesitated, where space opened up before anyone else noticed it. Maybe that was what he needed to do here. Instead of searching for a flag, maybe he should search for evidence that someone had been there first.

His thoughts drifted toward the other team as he searched. If he had been hiding their flag, where would he have chosen? Somewhere difficult to reach? Somewhere nobody would think to check? Or maybe somewhere so obvious that everyone would walk straight past it because it couldn't possibly be that simple. He frowned as his frustration built. If Team Toucan had hidden their flag well, then he'd simply have to search harder. Sooner or later they'd miss something, leave behind a clue, or make a mistake. And when they did, he intended to be paying enough attention to notice it. With that thought in mind, Mikey stepped carefully around another twisting root and disappeared farther into the jungle, moving more slowly than before but with a clear purpose at last.

As she walked through the rainforest, Diana thought that nothing else would happen to her and that getting her wand back from the monkeys had been the difficult part of the jungle. Unfortunately, the rainforest had other ideas for the young seer. The moment she stepped into Zone two with her teammate Avery, the ground beneath her black Converse squelched unpleasantly. Within moments, everything was soaked thanks to the rain pouring relentlessly from above. Her black cardigan quickly grew heavy with water, while the hems of her jeans became soaked. As Diana carefully picked her way through the flooded terrain, water pooled around her ankles, which made it difficult to try and avoid deeper patches of mud.

"Oh—" One foot sank much deeper than expected before she could catch herself. Upon instincts, Diana tried to set herself free, unfortunately the other black Converse became trapped as well. "This... isn't good." Diana tugged once, than twice, but she couldn't get out. "No, no, no..." The mud clung stubbornly to her boots as if it had no intention of letting go. Diana glanced around, as it was the only thing she could do. Her cheeks warmed with embarrassment as she struggled against the swamp-like ground. Every attempt she made only seemed to make matters worse. "I think I'm stuck..."

Eventually, someone came to pull her free, allowing her not to become apart of the rainforest. With an unpleasant slurp, her Converse finally escaped the mud's grip, leaving the young seer wobbling slightly before regaining her balance. "...Thank you," she said with an embarrassed smile, brushing strands of damp brown hair away from her face.

She glanced down at her Converse, which were nearly completely hidden by a thick layer of mud. Between having her wand stolen by monkeys earlier and nearly becoming part of the swamp now, this tournament had certainly been more eventful than she'd imagined. Maybe after this game she'd find a way to clean her shoes. Surely one of the spells she learnt would clean her shoes, right?

Diana checked her pockets, making sure her wand was still safe, as the rain drummed against the broad leaves above her. Her cardigan clung damply to her arms, and droplets continued to fall from her sleeves. Diana had hoped to continue onward with Avery, but from her being stuck in the mud, she knew she that couldn't happen.

Diana lifted her gaze and quickly took in her surroundings. Several members of Team Toucan weren't far away now. For the first time since the match had begun, the opposing team no longer felt like distant figures hidden somewhere deeper within the rainforest. They were close enough that she could make out their movements through the curtain of rain.

Her muted grey-green eyes lingered on the opposing team before drifting across the flooded terrain. Every exposed root, every puddle, and every patch of mud seemed capable of becoming another obstacle. The rainforest was beautiful, but it was also unpredictable.

A familiar feeling settled quietly in the back of her mind and it wasn't fear. In fact it was the same instinct she'd felt since arriving in the jungle. It was that gentle reminder to stay alert and to pay attention. Diana had never been able to explain those moments, only that she'd learned it was usually worth listening to them. She let out a quiet breath. "So much for hoping the jungle was finished surprising us." For now, there was little she could do except for staying where she was, to regain her footing and keep watch. If the rainforest had taught her anything today, it was to never assume the next challenge was far away.

It took Livia but a moment to lift her chin and meet her cousin's lovely green eyes. For a moment, the strategic nature of the game faded, as did her teammates and opponents, and Livia's expression softened if only momentarily. The outward edges of her eyes lifted upwards, as did the corners of her lips, the well-meaning attention warming the young girl just as much as the tropical weather. Her spindly fingers had not yet grazed the soft, velvety leaves of some of the plants, and, indeed, her hand hung in the air as if it were caught sneaking its way into a biscuit jar. She clasped her hands together, folding them in front of her, and she pursed her lips in thought, outwardly the picture of a whimsical herbologist.

'But of course not,' Livia rasped, her voice warm. 'Though it would be quite interesting to observe such frogs in their natural habitat. I would imagine the toxicity of the poison could vary depending on the habitat in which the creatures live.' The hint of a smile began to return, tugging at the girl's rosy lips. 'But, Evpraksyushka, you must admit the plants themselves are practical – and, perhaps, somewhat pretty, even if something is left to be desired.'

She swallowed after the expulsion of words. Only those to whom Livia was close could coax such long, sincere phrases from her lips. She continued to follow along, pleased to be by her cousin's side as they drifted deeper into the forest, ready to attack.

Avery had done it. Finally. She had actually done something right for her team by making it into zone two. That meant that she wasn’t a complete failure considering she had messed up last round by losing her wand to the cursed monkeys. She let out a sigh. It was her luck that she had messed up and let her mind stray to the beauty of the jungle for just one moment.

She knew better now to stay on her guard, but she also knew that she was human. That meant she messed up. Sometimes very badly. Though she had to accept that. It was the way of life. The way things always went with games. Especially high stakes ones. She needed to let go of her competitive nature and embrace the fun and thrill that games brought. Easier said than done.

Avery glanced back, but she couldn’t see her team well behind her. Oh well, the only person she did see was Diana who seemed to be struggling to follow her. Avery wished the young first year luck. She knew well that treading through the jungle wasn’t easy.

Letting out another sigh Avery turned her attention to what was ahead and her goal. She could do this.

I was pushing hard to make up for lost time from my daydream. I had to pull my act together and help my team. We were falling behind. And it was my fault. All my fault. Especially if we lost. I needed to pull myself together and work hard. My team was depending on me. I could not risk my team falling apart because I refused to get my head out of the clouds and into the game. That was my job. Assist my team. I had to uphold that.

Dancing easily through to zone three I had finally caught up with them. They were in their own sort of struggle though. Each one dealing with their own problems and paying me little to no mind. No problem. I might as well make myself busy and do what I want to help them out. We were a team. That was my job to the team.

I didn’t see any of the members of the other team yet. But I was ready. I was ready to put them into the dust. Especially if it meant stopping them from getting my team’s flag if they actually found it. Wherever it was. I had not been paying attention when that conversation went on.

Be the change you wish to see

What the actual hell was wrong with that kid, Fire thought to himself, the small moment of pity he felt for the shivering chihuahua dissipating. Porcupine... The word echoed through his head as well as the infernal yapping of @Aodhan Shaw's voice. He didn't want to admit it, but the comment had touched a nerve, as he reached up to run his hand through the black locks.

Thank goodness he wouldn't have to seem him for a while, the boy walked over a broken branch as water downpour on him and all his teammates. That fixed the porcupine hair as it lay flat, wet, cold, and dripping pushed slicked back, refusing to have it sticking against his forehead.

"Well so much for dancing in the rain, no tequilas?" Fire grinned at his quip, referencing to the famous song gently nudging his half-drowned friend, @Hana Bakir with his elbow.

@Meiyu Xiang then came up to the ghoul girl, honestly it was zero surprise in Fire's eyes that these two were friends, they both gave off midnight stalker eldritch siren creature in Victorian mansions vibes... if that made sense. They were whispering to one another, rude, Fire thought to himself before thinking further. Were they dating or something? Maybe he was wrong but the proximity between the two seemed to tell otherwise, oh well, that was too bad. Considering despite it all, he found Hana intriguing.

Along with Meiyu came a little soggy dog of a kid, @Jamie Saeng, he spoke as if trying to pull away Meiyu along with him, but the girl seemed more interested in the conversation with Hana. Man, he felt like a third-wheel he thought before re-interjecting himself.

"Wow, nice to see you too Meiyu, the way you had a lack of words, would've made a guy think you were ignoring em kid, almost was offended," Fire said leaning slightly to make himself visible, he then narrowed his eyes toward Jamie. "Who's this? Your pet or somethin'?" The boy quickly slapped the back of his thigh, a bite from what he presumed a spider or mosquito, "Damn bugs..." He grumbled, reaching to scratch his buttock.

Emiline grins at the other two girls in her section, feeling quite accomplished. The leaves seemed to rustle in warning, a bit similar to the woods in the book 'The Magic Faraway Tree'. Like that book, this jungle seemed to have a life of its own and had its own language of rustles and creaking. Although, Emiline did worry slightly as the other team could come bursting though the treeline any section now! Or a predator or a magical being. Or the weather could change drastically, and she would not like to be drenched wet to fight her opponents, nor would she like it to be a heatwave and be melting as she fought. However, if this blasted jungle decided to be misty, she'll take it, it would provide more cover for herself, her teammates and unfortunately, also the other team. She gripped her wand tighter and mentally and physically prepared herself for an inevitable fight. It would be fun though.... Right? A wave of nerves hit the brown-haired girl, she had never cast a spell or charm outside a classroom setting before! What if its too harsh? What if she seriously hurts someone? What if the charm hits an animal or plant instead? Her mind quickly thinks of every worse case scenario, but she manages to shake herself out of it and focus back on the game and being positive!

Getting stuck in one area honestly kind of sucked. Even if he was executing the brilliant idea of laying down a trap for their opponents, he knew for a fact that he was missing out on the action. For all he knew, the others were in the thick of... combat! Or something. They could've been slinging spells, riding wild jungle animals, or even better—engaging in some good old-fashioned fist fighting. He... knew that, realistically, most of that couldn't happen. But was he ever one to think "realistically"? Not at all. So, he merely hoped Fire was getting punched in the face by some magical jungle monkey and kept lamenting his work.

That was when he caught the strangest thing in the corner of his eye.

At first, Aodhan figured it was a trick of the light. Shadows cast by the trees. But then he kept noticing it—the thing, whatever it was, kept moving. He immediately paused what he was doing, frozen stiff in anticipation. He realized one second too late that he should've been grabbing his wand when the "thing" revealed itself. It slithered to and fro, passing through the water of a nearby stream, just to immediately speed towards his direction.

"What the shit!" he exclaimed, bouncing back out of reflex. He watched the snake—that was a snake, right?—cut directly through his old position. It didn't bother to stop, though. It continued to slither, and slither, and slither until eventually, he could see it no longer. For a moment, all was quiet.

"... That's right, you better run!" The shout did nothing more than reveal his location to other, not-so kind creatures, but clearly, the boy did not care. Having said his piece, he quickly went back to what he was already doing.

XXXXXDeparting further into the jungle, Meiyu had gone astray from most of the group, leaving behind Hana and Jamie, fortunately reunited with Evpraksiya and another prefect she had barely interacted with. Instinctively, she moved towards the other girl, a small smile pursed against her lips as she extended her hand. "Nice to finally meet you, it's Charlotte, right?" Meiyu asked despite the answer already instilled within her — holding the ability to easily recognise another and remember avid details of people she'd meet even as passerby's had been an ability she had honed on whilst maintaining her status as Gryffindor's most useful prefect.

Faint sounds of branches snapping perked Meiyu's ears as though she had morphed into a feline, a most despised comparison albeit true. It indicated the trio were not alone in this section, surprisingly, she had not noticed others who moved into the zone where Mr. Big Nose and Terrorist 1 and Ghoul 1 remained in — fortunately, Terrorist 2 was nowhere nearby.

"We're all duellists right? Best be prepared incase anything goes wrong." Meiyu affirmed, her palm moving to withdraw her wand which had remained nested in the hem of her shorts, half dismayed that she could not carry her bag for the treacherous journey even if would be rendered as a useless obstacle.
