Another spectacular spell went off spectacularly! Edward had learned his lesson though, now he knew better than to spare more than a moment to celebrate… so he celebrated a little in his head before narrowing his eyes to focus again on the duel. A quick glance to one of his teammates who had made the mistake he did, he hoped it wouldn’t be repeated by either of them… his team captain though held the other team off while they refocused; a little luck didn’t hurt either - good for them but bad for their opponent as one of the enemy incendios backfired in an inglorious blaze… welp, it could have happened to them too, he knew, but he had to focus now if they were to win…

Esme's hopes were mildly crushed when, after the Incendio she had attempted to send forth backfired. It happened within a single split second — one moment, she was watching fire begin to flicker at the end of her wand, and the next, she was watching as it licked at her robes.

Damn,” Esme cursed with a low hiss, the word feeling like smoke and ash in her mouth. The round couldn't seem to be going any worse; Livia's spell had also backfired, and, with horror, Esme realized her friend had been hit.

Livia!” Esme called out on instinct, blinking rapidly as she saw her friend be jolted back by Flipendo’s impact. At least the other spell which came Livia’s way missed — a paltry comfort in the face of Esme’s own failure and smoldering robes. She looked around, feeling an uncharacteristically public sense of frantic fear. Cassius was still under the effect of the Curse of the Bogies, there was a storm cloud brewing above them, crackling threateningly— and her own robes were on fire. This wasn't how this was supposed to go. This was worse than she could have imagined, really.

Still, Esme swallowed hard, trying to keep focus on the opponents. She forced her back straight, focusing on the feeling of the wand in her fingers. Hufflepuff hadn’t beat them yet — it was just a few spells, she told herself. She was intelligent. She was smart. A good student; she was briefly a prefect in her first two months of school, for Merlin’s sake. She could figure out a single duel.

Cassius, who truly did think the best of everyone and especially his own Vipers, had not been expecting to be this consistently outmatched. Considering their current circumstances, no one could have been, but the sheer extent of their opponent's capability spoke to something deeper than simple intuition. Luck, as much as skill and instinct, was how a duel was won, and they had been in dire need of it since the start.

He'd hoped to incapacitate at least one Hufflepuff with the Tongue-Tying Curse, perhaps even further threaten them with a few good combos with his teammates, but his cast had been easily side-stepped, and no other attack had followed from Slytherin's side. Confusion quickly turned to sharp horror as he looked to both of his teammates, first Esme, lit aflame by her own hand, then Livia, on the receiving end of a hard Flipendo. Cassius wasn't very close with his teammates, but he'd been familiar enough to know that they were both proud people and good casters, better than himself in sheer impact. For both of them to backfire at once...? Hufflepuff was getting more aggressive by the moment, confidence bolstered by their continued success, and Cassius was still trying to swallow down frustration when Livia's spell made itself known.

Before the hit, she'd had her wand up, likely to bring the spell down on Hufflepuff's heads, but the spell had stuttered, an angry storm cloud coalescing above them instead. Black with rolling thunder, it rumbled dangerously, but nothing came down from it just yet—a small mercy. He tightened his wand grip nervously, pulling his attention back to their opponents heedless of the dizzy way his head spun from movement and the congestion—worrying, as he could never stop doing, especially in their current circumstances, but unable to do anything else but commit with all of his heart to the same cause that his teammates had bound themselves to. If his calculations were correct, they were nearly halfway through the duel, and the Vipers were still in the game. They had to be.

It seemed that luck was finally on the Vipers side. Livia decided to dodge any attacks instead of dodging. Smart move considering the hit she had just take. Edward was the first attack she saw aimed at Livia. However he must not have been paying attention since he missed her entirely and instead almost hit Tatiana. How that happens Fawkes would never know. You had to be extremely distracted to not be able to aim the spell in the right direction.

The next spell aimed at Livia was from Verity. Once again, it was fire. Eh guess it would be better to stop worrying about the safety hazard and just embrace the chaos that fire caused. However was she looking nervous? She was looking right at Livia when she casted however the spell backfired lighting her on fire instead. Luckily it wasn't as bad as the last time she was lit and it went out almost immediatly.

Tatiana was once again not casting. She just stood there doing nothing. Was Fawkes supposed to pull her off field? No thats not how a duel works, she only had to do that if the girl fainted. The Vipers seemed to take advantage of the fact she wasn't paying attention and both Cassius and Esme were able to land a solid hit on her. The former cast the curse of boogies which hit right on. Snot was now coming out of Tatiana's nose.

Esme on the other hand went for the softening charm. This was the first time Fawkes had seen it in action. It hit Tatiana right in the chest. She seemed to becoming slightly jelly like? Magic truly was weird. The duel was going rather smoothly for now. She waited to see what they would do next.

Luck had finally shifted towards the green team… Edward didn’t have time to stop and curse their luck as once again Tatiana froze up - he had done so himself once already this match so who was he to judge but he hoped that Verity could get her to snap out of it before the next volley of spells - he didn’t know if they were friends or not but honestly for a hufflepuff it doesn’t matter as we’re all friends by virtue of being hufflepuff and so he still kept faith in his team to pull off this victory despite the recent turnaround…

He did have to give Livia credit, her focusing purely on defense clearly paid off, a smart decision he thought and he decided that if he ever found himself in a similar position he should definitely do the same…

As much as Livia did her utmost to avoid swaying like a reed in a storm (and, of course, did her best to avoid being put in situations that might cause such an effect), there did come a point where, upon subjection to harm, not much could be done. She performed feats of dignity: her shoulders remained back and down, her green gaze remained blank and cast forward and she remained light on her feet. Her legs bent slightly at the knee joint, remaining soft, springy, ready to move at a moment's necessity.

When an animal was cornered, the response generally manifested as one of three things. It could curl into a ball, minimising its threat and also its attackable surface area. It could instead lash out – a quick, decisive offensive could, of course, spell victory. But it could also flee.

Livia did not attempt to rush off the piste. That would have resulted to her crumpling to the ground from the impact. However, winded as she was, she did not attempt to cast another spell, fearful of worsening the already-brewing storm. Her efforts, then, would be manifest in evasive tactics.

Remaining ever-observant allowed her to view the piste, especially after the clearing of the fog. The sniffling afflicting Cassius appeared quite disgusting; Livia herself could not fathom experiencing such a thing herself. However, to his own credit, he launched a curse of the bogies right at the Hufflepuffs, resulting in a nod from Livia, who watched as the girl, who was not quite focused, did not manage to dodge the incoming attack. 'Lovely,' she offered, her voice drier than usual.

Though she still remained poised to evade, it appeared it would not yet be necessary. She watched, intrigued, as the knockback jinx from the Hufflepuff boy redirected itself to the girl whom Cassius had hit. Livia could not even be certain it had been meant for her. Verity, too, did not have much luck. The circumstances of this duel were providing evidence that, though humans had discovered fire aeons ago, they had not yet learned to control it – perhaps it would not let them.

Livia had not realised how quickly her heart was beating. Slowly, its thudding lessened to a more tranquil thrum. Esme, too, had performed well. Though the tides had not shifted, they had, perhaps, decided, even if momentarily, to ebb.

Perhaps the loss of her composure swung the pendulum in their favour, for once. It was not perfect — Cassius was still covered in snot, and Livia had been forced to simply dodge, but there was a silver lining there. The sniffling sound was passing, albeit not as quick as Esme would have liked, and even when moving away from oncoming attacks, Livia retained her natural, swan-like grace. The storm continued to rage above them; unpleasant, but not yet dangerous.

Two spells flew towards them from Hufflepuff's end of the piste; or, well, two spells were attempted. Verity's wand backfired, hitting her with a burst of the flames she had just tried to conjure. The raven-haired boy seemed to get a bit too over eager with his casting, and his wand carelessly aimed the spell at his own teammate. Perhaps it was a way to wake her up, considering the girl had been seemingly staring off into the empty space before them for quite the moment, now. Perhaps the Hufflepuffs simply had… rather peculiar customs when it came to friendly fire.

Esme had some sympathy for Verity — she had just been on the end of an Incendio backfiring, and the puff of fire and smoke hitting your own skin was certainly not pleasant. She would have felt worse for Tatiana, too, if she hadn't just hit Esme with Tarantallegra only moments ago.

Now, aiming at Tatiana, Esme’s spell hit true — she smiled with satisfaction, chin lifting slightly, as she witnessed the flash of light hit Tatiana square in the chest, turning skin, sinew, and flesh to some odd, jelly-like texture. Good, Esme thought — though she winced imperceptibly at how the sensation must feel on the receiving end.

In being constantly put on the defensive, one’s strategy could only go forward when stepping perpetually back. Cassius had worried for them, had been always worried about logistic matters like these, but their hours of hard work had only been taken off-balance, not invalidated.

Tatiana had not cast in two rounds and Livia remained so injured to his own side, but protecting their vulnerable positions could not account for the duel’s continued aggression. They had no healing spells and, still dizzily afflicted with the nastiest cold he’d ever experienced, let alone been magically forced into, an otherwise benign target would have to be his best bet. He needn’t have glanced towards Esme in his peripheral to match her thought.

Her softening charm struck true, then Cassius’ own taste of sick revenge, and it was the half-seconds in between that he fully expected retaliation as it’d always come. And yet, braced, Hufflepuff had fumbled as terribly as they had just.

The sudden, slight turn was immediately obvious. Confused, entirely half-convinced of Hufflepuff’s deception, he made to scrutinise their opponents further but straightened instead. Whatever had happened had been just few cracks in the near-impenetrable wall that they’d been knocking at this entire time, but whatever temporary victory they’d just been handed—not even by their own hand, they’d take.
Action: Doing as strategised.

Well she spoke too soon. The luck for the vipers had turned sour again. Livia had chosen to dodge again which well was a good thing. However even though she was able to dodge the spell sent her way by Edward, she was struck by the metelojinx. The very same one she casted a few rounds back. Fawkes winced as she watched the girl pass out onto the ground. She would have gone to drag her out but then she would be caught in the crossfire which 1. would be interfering in the duel and 2. it would be bad if the moderator passed out. Poor Livia was just going to have to lay there-

Both Cassius and Esme had missed their spells at Verity and Tatiana respectively. Tatiana, despite not actually casting anything was surprisingly really good at dodging. But she was still concerned about what the girl was doing by not casting.

In retaliation, Verity casted a well timed incendio at Esme. Esme was not caught aflame but it surely could not be good to be hit with fire so many times- It was concerning. She could see the burn marks getting worse every time she was hit.

Maybe luck would turn around for the Vipers? Wishful thinking. They were down one member and another one was on the verge of passing out by the looks of it. Oh well it was what it was.
