Meave listened quietly as Azrael spoke, her gaze flicking between him and the umbrella. The inscription caught her attention again, and she leaned forward slightly, reading the words once more under her breath. The Sun’s shadow knows no fear, no dawn. Is the watcher always watched, or simply drawn?

She paused, tilting her head, thoughtful. It sounds like… something about perspective, she said softly, more to herself than anyone else. Maybe the shadow’s not afraid because it only exists with the sun. Like, it doesn’t need light to understand darkness—it’s part of both. Her tone was tentative, unsure if she made sense. And the ‘watcher’ part… maybe it means that people who always observe the world are also being seen in their own way. Like, you can’t really hide if you’re always looking outward.

Her words trailed off as thunder rumbled again, the sound vibrating through the cabin. She folded her hands in her lap, cheeks warming with embarrassment. Sorry, she murmured. That probably sounded weird. Still, she couldn’t stop herself from glancing at the umbrella once more, the engraved words glinting faintly. It’s beautiful, she thought, in a mysterious kind of way. Wish I had one

Before Azrael could say anything, The train made a very loud screeching noise- stumbling like something had hit it, the cabins all moved slightly, and you could hear kids nearby either screaming or laughing it off- the storm seems to be getting bad, especially since you can now barely see what's outside the window from the amount of water pouring down...

"...hm, it rains a lot at home too- sometimes stronger than this."

He shrugged, shifting closer to the window now that the sun was nowhere to be found- thunder could be heard nearby, it was loud- as it was striking pretty close to the train tracks, just enough to keep you on edge- Azrael didn't think he'd see something so beautiful on his way to Hogwarts, thankfully- his prayers were answered it seems.

"... hopefully they stop screaming next door."

He spoke up again, voice monotone like always- he seems completely unbothered by the loud thunder or the pouring rain, only ever blinking whenever thunder struck- as if comfortable with it.

"...do you two have any family traditions similar to mine?"

he asked, changing back the subject to traditions like the train didn't just stutter again while on the tracks- people inside are starting to get quieter, not calm- they're nervous, especially with how the train is suddenly moving.

What? It just didn’t make sense to her. How could a family not live together? Parents only ever see their children once or twice in their lives? And, how did they match the poem on the umbrella to the personality of the child if it isn’t even born yet? How would they know what they would be like?

No, that quite normal. Lots of families have traditions, though I don’t know if any are quite like yours. she said, slightly nervous. I mean I don’t know anyone else personally but who knows, there may be plenty of people out there who do the same! There was a note of uncertainty in her voice.

Jada had a growing suspicion that Azrael might not even be human, or fully human at least. Perhaps vampire? Or werewolf. A nocturnal creature anyhow. I mean, it made sense didn’t it. He likes the dark and seemed to dislike the sun, he had really large eyes, that could probably be useful to help see in the dark, and the strangely beautiful umbrella with that he’d received at birth. He was highly unusual at the very least.

Jada wondered if he could do anything special. Some creatures have special abilities no? Veela are incredibly persuasive and house elves can teleport. Did he have any of those talents?

Maybe you’ll meet someone else at school who’s family is kind of like yours?

"hm...maybe, there's a lot of people at Hogwarts."

He seemed to agree that maybe he'd meet someone with similar family traditions...still, that seemed kind of...well, like some kind of fever dream only the craziest of people would imagine? I mean, he isn't exactly the most normal looking person- neither is he the most normal acting one, still... despite insisting he's human, people seemed to think that he was something else- and he can sense that Jada is thinking that...with how suspicious she looks of him, of course.

"...if you have any doubts of me being human, I must assure you that I am In fact 100% it."

He said, turning to look at her again, big owl like eyes widening more as his eyes adjusted to the now dark cabin...

"...I'm not sure why people seem to think I'm not human."

He stated with a slight shrug, as if genuinely oblivious to why people seemed to think that- to him, he and his family were completely normal, why would anyone think otherwise, of course?

The rain continued outside, getting louder after a while- still, he remained seated, turning to look at the window every now and then to watch the raindrops falling on the window- and the thunder striking down near the train tracks they were currently on.

Jada still doubted it but didn’t comment anything. Did he really not know why people might question his heritage? Was he not aware of how different he and his family were from others?

I hope the train arrives soon, she said. Before the weather gets much worse.

She watched as tiny droplets of water snake down the window pane as if in a race to see who would reach the bottom first. There was not a hint of blue sky to be seen, instead dark clouds hung heavily, covering the sky as far as the eye could see. Every now and then, long streaks of golden yellow would pierce through the sky, illuminating the surrounding for but a second. What she would give for a steaming hot shower right now.

She watched as they passed by lochs, forests, villages. She watched as animals, foxes, deer and hares, hurried to find shelter. She watched Meave and Azrael, seemingly unfazed by the storm. And she wondered.

Jada squinted her eyes at something in the distance.

Is that it? Is that Hogwarts?

A towering castle stood tall, proud on top of a hill. She could see a glimpse of a forest, seeming eerie and dangerous behind it. With height towers and rows and rows of windows, it had a kind of rustic elegance to it.

Azrael turned to look at the window, eyes narrowing as he stared in the distance for a while before turning back to look at them again.

"...it is, we'll be there soon."

As the train continued, getting closer and closer to Hogwarts- he started getting ready to leave, he knew that once the train stopped- a stampede of kids would probably come rushing out and make it hard to walk out if they weren't ready ...he grasped his umbrella, getting ready to use it as kids started shuffling to gather their things- his umbrella started quickly spilling out cold air despite not being fully open- is he really about to head out into the cold rain with a cold as snow umbrella? Still, he doesn't seem cold- or bothered by the rain...in fact, he looks calmer (if possible) than he did when the sun was still out.

"..be careful once you step outside, the floor might be slippery from the rain and mud."

Excited chattering and giggles filled the air as doors started slamming open, kids all excited to quickly push their way out once they realized the train was quite literally a few seconds away from stopping...so, Azrael stood up, signaling for them to grab their things and start heading out- otherwise, they'd have to wait an eternity for everyone to calm down, stop pushing each other and for the door area to be empty enough for them to squeeze through.
