2023/24, Stage 2 Slytherin vs Hufflepuff: Match 4

It was always a good idea to keep him off the stage in the early rounds. He may have not been the best with spells or his aim, but his spells certainly pack a punch. It wasn’t hard to sense Hirsh’s state even with the fog. Did he feel guilty for doing the final blow? Nah. The satisfaction outweighed the guilt (if he had any in the first place). Dueling has not done anything good for his empathy. Being in a team as competitive as the Viridian Vipers, even less so. And from the way Cazares laughed unapologetically at Hades being hit with his own spell, Hanako couldn’t help but follow along with a satisfied snicker. Even the cold around him didn’t feel too bad at the moment.

At her nod, it was about time she realised he was more than just a pretty face. He just had to keep at it. “ Did you mean 2 down, and 1 to go?” he followed along and let out an amused chuckle, his gaze drifting back to Hades, looking far worse off than Hirsh. “ You don’t look so good there, handsome.” he teased, “ Why not take revenge for your other teammate and focus on me again, hm? If you’re nice maybe I’ll purposely let you hit me if it makes you feel better” he taunted with a mischievous grin.

Hades' face showed no emotion, he remained indifferent. Although in reality, he was feeling some sort of anger. The spell he had tried to do, it had backfired, and instead of heading for his target, it was returned to him. You could hear the bad word he said all over the place, but then he kept his expression indifferent. He looked with... Empathy to Lea who had been retired.

While their duel had been going badly before, now it was certainly going in the Slytherins' favor. Yes, maybe Opeila did not manage to evade the spell that was flung her way entirely, but everything else certainly more than made up for that. Her own spell went completely fine and Ruby's shield- Ruby's shield threw Hades' absolutely perfect ventus right back at him. Wonderful.

The Snakes had cornered the Badgers, but would there be no escape? While the Badgers had suffered the first loss, it didn't mean the match was. It would take some serious strategy though.

Cornered and weak Hades threw up a protego. Maybe it was calculated, maybe it was pure instinct - whatever it was, a shimmer would begin to spread from the tip of his wand. Lucia wouldn't let them just take the beating; 'flipendo' would dance out from her lips. She was looking to even the field.

The Vipers were looking to clear the field. And it would take a serious strategy. Strategy they had. In maybe one of the most calculated reads Galton had seen in his dueling-days the Vipers would all aim their wands as Lucia as they began their incantations. And thus came the fireworks. From Ruby, a confringo. Opeila with a cracker jinx, and Hanako with... With nothing. It seemed the boy had begun his incantation for a cracker jinx but something caught him up. The cold? Shell shock from the crackers jinx? Or maybe some part of him couldn't bring himself to finish the pretty Badger.

Hanako's failure would not be representative of his Team however. Both Ruby and Bridget would have no issue lighting Lucia up. Galton had flashbacks to his last moderated match as the explosions began. I guess hearing damage was just going to be apart of upper-level dueling. While Hades' protego would be largely useless, his feet were not. The radial cracker would sidestepped with grace. Lucia's flipendo would be lost in the light show that had consumed the stage, slipping off past Ruby and into nothing.

When the (quite literal) smoke cleared everyone was left standing, though Lucia was on her last legs. Galton shuddered to think what would have happened had Hanako cast. The Badgers were now deeper in the corner. It looked bleak, but they still had their wands. They weren't out yet.

Ahem. Oh how he wished he was under a nebulous fog right about now. His cheeks slightly reddened as the spell he had casted so often simply sizzled into nothingness. His first thought was to blame on Lucia’s annoyingly symmetrical features he can’t help but be drawn to. With this, she would earn a short lived glare. How dare she look so good even when she was 1 flipendo away from being unconcious. He let out an uncomfortable cough as he attempted to regain his cool. “ Just so you all know-” he said to anyone within their vicinity, the faux confidence tone masked his embarrassment well. “ I meant to do that. Out of pity”. He said with absolute certainty. Whatever, fake it till you make it.

After performing the spell, Hades discovered that his protego was in vain because Slytherin’s focused on Lucia, and from what he saw, they seemed to want blood. He couldn’t help but overhear Hanako and seeing him fail with the spell, he uttered a mocking phrase “Have you lost your focus on our beauty?” asked with a straight glance, thinking of how they would both end up in the next round, because Lucia could barely stand. He could not help but approach and ask his teammate how she was.

It kept getting better and better. Opeila's cracker jinx was well aimed and while Hades managed to evade the explosion, Lucia was hit fully. Ruby's spell flawlessly hit the Hufflepuff girl as well, only Hanako- fumbled with his wand. What exactly was he trying? Whatever it was, he claimed it was on purpose. Sure.
"Whatever makes you sleep at night, Tone." Opeila rolled her eyes, there was no shot she would let that slide. "Even if that is looking dumb to show pity."

Considering that the Hufflepuff boy had taken quite a blow a moment before, it was almost predictable that he would try to do something to keep himself standing—namely, cast the Shield Charm. Instead, the Slytherins cast at the girl, Ruby watching with satisfaction as her Blasting Curse was followed by a Cracker Jinx from Opeila. She would be waiting for something from Hanako that never came, though, and she glanced over at him to see what had happened. It looked like he was fine—what was wrong with him? "Just so you all know- I meant to do that. Out of pity." Ruby fixed him with an icy stare. “Tone. Would you do me a favor? Just be quiet and cast. You’re meant to be a Viridian Viper; the piste is no place for pity.” With a dismissive eye roll and a shake of her head, she refocused her attention on what they were supposed to be doing: casting.
