When a race started too smoothly, one could expect oppugnancy awaiting in the distant future. Xailah breezed through the passageway and fog, but the woods would prove to be a point of trouble, as they always did. Delta hurled his rider through the mid-branches of surrounding trees, making them lash back in response. The lioness kept ducking as both an instinct and precaution; looking for any strange movements from the branches- reaching, grabbing, clawing, anything implicative of abnormality- thankfully there would be none, only the rubberbanding snapback of the branches she hit. They'd whip her, leaving blossoming red lacerations across her starlit skin. She gnashed her teeth at the sudden sting, and dipped below the branch line, hoping to avoid the rest.

Xailah wouldn't realize it then (how could she?), but that evasive maneuver would prove to be a slight mistake. Hovering just above the forest floor, she turned her attention to it's canopy; she would spy a Slytherin racer overhead through the spaces in the leaves. Raising her wand to sky, she'd try to catch them by surprise from her point of cover, but her spell would shoot away with a dissatisfying fizzle- zooming clear past them. The Gryffindor would not notice the anomaly taking shape right behind her. At least, not until she heard the billow of an element she was uncomfortably familiar with.

Xailah had met her boggart on several occasions, but the freshest memory she had of it was during a school-sanctioned Trial by Fear. A boggart had been the last obstacle to overcome- which she did so with great success. The Thing had changed over the years, just as she had. Oddly, seeing it's newest form had been a welcome wake-up call for her: a cry that told her she needed to cut her binds if she wanted her freedom. She had worked far too hard to get to where she was. Staring into that panther's golden eyes- watching as it paced from behind a sealed cage- spoke more volumes than any person up to that point. If she wanted to live, she needed to shimmy open her own lock.

And so she did. The panther ran free, and she never looked back. She regretted nothing.

It took a moment too long for her to realize she was having another boggart encounter. Slowly, she turned to witness a wall of fire growing right before her very eyes. The smoke it produced did not choke, it's flames did not eat the surrounding foliage. But it was so convincing. Almost as convincing as the impossible beast that ran from it: a pantheress, black as night, with eyes like molten gold- it's pupils slotted rather than round.

Xailah was not afraid of fire.

She did not fear creatures built for maiming.

Those bear traps, blooming before her very eyes, surrounding the feline, caught her eye immediately, however. They made her grip under her gloves turn clay white. Although the place was different, and it's shape was slightly altered, this boggart was more or less the same as the one from the trial, therefore making it a product of the same fear: entrapment.

If she or the beast wanted any chance of escaping the nightmare, they both needed to flee. Xailah bolted forward, sending herself bulleting through the treeline, the panther miraculously keeping pace with her- but so was the wall of fire and gaping, toothy traps.

She was struck with a furor as she broke into a short clearing, it was then she would become aware. Something fiery purged any chance for distress to instill itself in her being. What she found instead was a rare, almost foreign, sensation. She was enraged. After she had just seen several people almost die, a boggart had the gall to try and pin her? Seriously? Her sleek locks writhed in warning (to no accord of the howling wind), her eyes slotting into dangerous daggers.

The Thing ran alongside her, taunting her, but this only made her more furious. "How dare you show your face here, after what I have witnessed." She snarled at the aberration, her peaceful and dreamlike demeanor peeling back to reveal something sharp and wild. She raced alongside the panther; eyeing the billowing flames chasing it, and the traps littering the ground that threatened to anchor it with each harrowing bound. "I have seen hell, and you think you can amount to it?" She'd command her broom to a halt, her attention landing on Della speeding by; however, she made sure to keep the boggart in her peripheral. "You are nothing more than a mere blight on my mind." She declared with a low hiss.

If she was to be the creatures target, so be it. But she could not go any farther with it hot on her tail. She would risk transferring it, like a illness, onto her fellow lioness. Lead it away. Keep it away from Della. Determined to prevent the boggart from changing course, she would put her own to a halt and begin going the direction opposite of her housemate. There really wasn't any other choice at that moment. Inhaling, she pulled her broom in a sharp U-turn, flying head-on toward the other racers that were (formerly) behind her. "Boggart coming through!" Get out of the way, was hopefully implied.

Wyatt allowed himself a smile when his spell successfully hit his Slytherin teammate, and Vale ascended above the other racers. It seemed this caused a Gryffindor spell to fly right under the Basilisk co-captain, and Wyatt wondered what it might have been. He steadied himself on his broom, trying to prepare as best he could for the obstacles ahead. He wasn't in the lead, but he wasn't last. That counted for something.

Before Della could truly start her race, her teammate Hugh was next to her. The large lion grabbed her by the collar and before she knew she was flying forward. Now, this might seem unsightly on Hugh's part, but it was a maneuver they had practiced again and again. It was second nature to Della to be thrown through the course like a ragdoll. Hugh did what needed to be done. She could hear him shouting at her, so she added a "Thank you!" that was probably not loud enough to pierce the growing gap between them.

Della glided through several obstacles, only hitting a tree, and found herself in the sea of racers. She saw Xailah coming toward her, going the wrong way. She heard the older girl shouting, something about a boggart? An icy chill went down Della's spine, confirming what she'd heard. And Xailah was leading the monster away from them.

Maybe Della hadn't been prepared for this race, but her team was taking it in stride. It was about time she caught up.

----Everthing felt so peaceful so high up! Vale decided now was a better time than ever to get herself a bit of a boost. A dose of bruise removal paste should do the trick, even if the bleeding doesn't seem to be doing so much to help her situation.

And...there! She was already feeling a bit more energy n-OWWW!!!!

She paused, dazed out in a sense of confusion and was barely able to get herself back on track. She swear something just smacked her really hard. A familiar sense of a smack too! Vale took a moment to look back and realized why that smack was so familiar. Uh oh, that's what she gets for lollygagging around... Vale hurried to turn her head forward and take the initiative for her team.

Being chased by a bigger was an entirely new sensation in comparison to just facing one head-on. It was a bit more daunting this way; having to keep track of where you moved, and where it followed. Xailah was methodical in her flight, more so than usual. She backtracked through the trees, weaving between the massive trunks all while keeping a sharp eye on the growing trail of flames and the panther that was seemingly beginning to lose it's battle against the traps. Another dreadful bound would nearly place it's paw in the teeth of a hungry bear snare. It would miss by a hair, much to Xailah's relief.

Her flight would take an unexpected turn, as a spell was sent her way by the rookie cub. The boggart counter spell, she would quickly learn. Her grip on her broom relaxed as she watched the wisp of magic spread across the malicious illusion, rendering it ineffective. The fire died. The traps harmlessly snapped shut. And the panther- the panther would get to run free for another day. Xailah watched as the inky she-beast ran ahead of her, disappearing into the thicket. Peace returned to the Gryffindor once again, entirely unaware that the boggart would quickly latch onto another member of her team. Poor Ying. Remorse would strike her, had she known. It would seem she was destined to lead trouble to others today.

How unfortunate.

"Danke schön!" "Thank you!" Gratitude was sent Maverick's way with a quick wave. Xailah wouldn't say it and make him aware, but she owed him one. She'd have to make sure to return the favor if he ever found himself in a similarly tricky situation. But in the meantime, she'd worry about getting herself back on track. Literally.
