Edgar was indeed the kind of lad who’d seek to impress others, out of thirst from his own damaged self-esteem; yet, at this particular moment, it had not grazed his mind. No, that book had so far been his favourite one, not because of the horrid creatures it presented in such detail, but because of the dynamic magic it introduced. The one on Charms looked fun too, but this one implied much more action, attack and defense, it wasn’t as abstract to him as magic for its own sake.

Then why didn’t he open it to read? Simply because he too became distracted by the impression that their arrival was imminent.

« Ooh », he replied to Reynard’s succinct explanation as a sudden rush of last minute activity followed the announcement that confirmed what they’ve all been feeling. « See you guys there, then », he added, putting his book back and not taking out his pointy hat either, despite the fact that he kind of liked it for its « real wizard » look.

He would have liked to know more about the Sorting, but he supposed that there would some kind of introduction later.

He had of course no idea that the Sorting Ceremony would be preceded by a symbolic initiation, the crossing of a beautiful lake on small boats. Edgar, like everyone else, would never forget the magnificent, impressive silhouette of the looming castle that was about to become his new home.

Maybe the boy wasn't that bad. Reynard started thinking they might have judged him too harshly. Of course, he always preferred to assume everyone he ever met was either a knave or a bumbling fool until he was proven otherwise. Much less disappointments that way.

The train came to a complete stop, and he decided it was safe enough to reach for the overhead compartment and retrieve his trunk without risking it falling on top of him. He waited for the very last minute to do so, wanting to finish reading a few more pages before putting away his book. But now that they've arrived, he couldn't do so fast enough!

He was eager to get outside the train, stretch his limbs, and get a glimpse of the castle he heard so many stories about. Assuming he would be able to see it, in the darkness of night.
Backpack slung over his shoulders, and the pointy hat at his hands, he stopped at the entrance to their compartment one last time to bid the two farewell:

"I guess this is goodbye. It was nice meeting you" he meant Edward in particular, but he gave Edgar a courteous nod too "Will catch up with you at Hogwarts"

Edward noticed that none of the other boys put on their hats and quickly pulled his down as well. He didn't want to look stupid if neither of them was going to wear it.
Edward saw that Reynard had gone back to reading and grinned about that. He probably would have done the same thing for 15 minutes, if they were not almost there and his excitement grew.
He pressed his nose against the window again, hoping to already get a glimpse of the castle but he didn't see it and soon the station came into view. It was lit and so he could see it approaching but no sight of the castle. Probably it was too dark.

When the train got to a halt, Reynard got up quickly. Before he was gone, he said goodbye and Edward replied: "Yeah, see you around and good luck later."

Edward also got up to grab his stuff and only mumbled a short "Bye" in the direction of the other kid, whose name he still didn't know, and hurried outside. He could not wait to see the castle, finally. The train ride was already a success, he thought and was looking forward to the coming year.
