First Year Transfiguration

Hestia looked up in slight panic at the mention of a group discussion. She wondered if she would lose points if she just... didn't participate. She really wasn't one for talking to other people unless they came up to her first. She glanced at the boy next to her again. Was this going to be a group discussion as in the whole class talks or just small groups talk? If it was the latter maybe he would be willing to chat with her. Once the professor dismissed the class to discuss, she turned to the boy and bit her lip, taking a deep breath. "I... I'll be honest. I wasn't really paying attention. What are we supposed to discuss?" She asked, keeping her voice somewhat low. After all, she didn't want to risk getting in trouble for not paying attention in class. Oh, she knew this was the start of a bad habit but she couldn't help herself. The Hufflepuf boy had really caught her off guard. "Oh, M-my name's Hestia by the way. You know, like the greek goddess?" She liked slipping that fact into any conversation she could, feeling pretty proud her parents had named her after a literal goddess.

Kevin silently sat in his seat while the professor lectured about formulas...while it was more dry in presentation the content was far from new. After all his parents and grandfather had effectively explained this much to him long ago so while his quill danced across the page to write notes - extra commentary ended up on the paper. It wasn't sassy commentary so much as anecdotes to things he'd been told or shown before. After all, just because he had a practical context he couldn't just ignore the theoretical end. That was something his grandfather drilled into his head long ago. That still didn't keep him from getting bored in group discussions. In this regard his small stature was a blessing since he could just slouch to make himself smaller and nap while escaping the notice of those around him.

Honestly he was a little disappointed in how class was going since he'd hoped for a more wands out approach to lessons like this one. He could only guess that it was a matter of either professor preference or student safety. A disappointed sigh escaped his lips as he turned his head that remained firmly on his desk to see if he was the only one so bored.

Reid was about to turn himself, yet he couldn't when his robe had gotten stuck on a splinter of the desk. The Hufflepuff boy quickly took it off the caught object and turned to Hestia as she spoke, nodding as she did so. "That's a nice name. My name is Reid, although nothing special about it." he beamed lightly, fixing himself. The Hufflepuff boy was going to actually be able to answer someone this time about academics.

He had noticed she was a Ravenclaw as well, he seemed to only have most of conversations with Ravenclaw. "The professor was talking about the consequences of transforming objects and people, I think people." Reid looked back down at his notes, fixing the slipping reading glasses on his features. He nodded firmly and turned back to Hestia.

"Plus, he wants us to also discuss the formula and it's variables, I think." The Hufflepuff glanced back towards his notes, using one hand to flip back towards his previous writings. He could hear the soft murmur of the other students participating in the group discussion. It was easy to get lost, yet he turned back to Hestia soon after. "If you need to see my notes, they're right here. But they're a little messy to read and only include what I just saw." The boy had slid his paper just a little towards her, it had what he gotten from the time he's been there.

Hestia’s face fell at the mention of a formula. She had never been good at muggle math, who knows how complicated wizard math was. Or… maybe this was wizard science? But that didn’t make sense, science and magic didn’t usually mix. Hestia shook her head to get the worries away and leaned over to peer at Reid’s notes. She copied them into her own notebook and glanced up at Reid again. “Thanks.” She said, a little more confident now that the boy was actually talking to her.

“Reid’s a nice name too.” She commented with a small smile. “So… I’m no good at math, can you explain the formula to me? And… consequences of transforming objects and people… I suppose you could get in trouble with the person or owner? Or maybe the spell backfires and does something nasty to the caster?” Hestia was really racking her brain here. She felt really dumb right now, but she didn’t know much of anything when it came to spell casting seeing as her mother insisted on putting her in muggle schools. “I’m sorry, I’m not much good at this kind of stuff…” She said, looking a bit downcast. She shook her head again and took a deep breath, mumbling “I can do this, I can do this.” to herself.

Was this that pressuring to some? He didn't know that was the case. Reid didn't want to make the girl feel bad for it and didn't comment further on her mumbling. He nodded along with her answer, he pretty much agreed with her response either way. His answer might be not as elaborate as a Ravenclaws, but he used his common sense for now. "The professor said that the formula is pretty much to determine how successful the transfiguration is. I'm guessing ..."

The Hufflepuff boy paused to look at his notes, trying to quickly understand the formula and its properties. It seemed pretty rudimentary, but he was just out of place is all. "If you have the numbers for these variables, I could suppose you use it to find t ... or z. If you know the wand power, substitute it for the w and - - I'm actually quite unsure on this, so I don't think you should quote me much." he confessed, leaning over to read his notes.

He wished that the poor girl was paired up with Dymphna or a more capable partner. Yet he was thankful for her patience in him, he was learning along the way just like she was. Reid gently tapped his finger upon the surface of his desk; his face suddenly had lit up at an idea that came to mind. "There's a study group forming on Saturday, at three was what we agreed on if I remember right."

Reid had to double check with such a thing, he just remembered it was going to be on Saturday. He cleared his throat, "If you're interested, we'll be talking about our classes and going over things like this. It's all first years, so I doubt there will be any pressure." The only pressure was the fact that he was going to be surrounded by three people who came from a house of intelligence. Yet he was glad that people like Dymphna and Bloom were quite patience or at least, forgiving.

So it was math. Hestia frowned again and stared down at the formula. Maybe she could do this if the letters made any sense to her. She nodded along to Reid's explanation, slowly drumming her fingers on the table in front of them. She didn't realize there were formulas and stuff to see how successful magic would be. It honestly didn't really make sense to her, but she pushed that thought aside and laughed a little when he admitted to being unsure.  She perked up at the mention of a study group. Maybe that would help her out a lot.

"That sounds wonderful!" She said, a little too loudly. She glanced around and apologized to the professor, her face growing red. "Uh... I hope your study partners won't mind me joining you terribly..." She glanced down. "What house are they from?" She asked curiously, looking up at Reid. Probably more Hufflepuffs if she really thought about it. If they were in fact Hufflepuffs, at least she wouldn't feel too intimidated. She'd heard Hufflepuffs were pretty friendly, and so far her experience with Reid had proved this to be true. Hestia's hand moved up to brush through her hair, her fingers getting caught on a couple of knots on the way through it. She frowned at this and placed her hand back on the table.

Reid glanced about them, listening a little to the murmurs of their other peers as he tried to listen to what they were saying. He turned his attention back towards Hestia's loud answer, startling him and yet he managed to relax a second later. His lips were held back into a smile, trying not to chuckle at her outburst, at least she was excited by the particular idea. "Well - - they're actually all Ravenclaws as well. One of them is Dymphna, she's the student over there." he spoke, slightly pointing towards a girl with blonde hair.

"The other one is Bloom Silverton. Then there's me." He was somewhat afraid to speaking Bloom's name, especially in light of the recent events. Now that he thought of it, would Bloom go to the study group? His brow came together in a slight frown, looking back at his notes to read it. Hopefully he didn't ruin anything, albeit he wanted to talk to Dymph about it when he could get the chance. In the meantime, at least he was going to have another addition to their small academic trio.

"I don't know where we're going to meet, but if you see Dymphna back in your commons - maybe you should ask her just to be sure." He didn't want her to fall out of the loop, he himself wanted to ask her about that vital piece of information. Otherwise he might just end up wandering the halls looking for the three of them.

"Oh more Ravenclaws?" That was somehow both intimidating and relaxing at the same time. She glanced over at the girl Reid pointed at and nodded. "I think I've seen her around the common room before." She said. At least this girl was vaguely familiar. "I'll be sure to ask her. Though, shouldn't you know as well? Y'know, so you know where to go?" She asked with a small laugh.  She was starting to feel a bit more comfortable around the boy, which was good if they were going to be in a study group together.

She was silent for a moment, also trying to listen in to what everyone else was talking about. Maybe she could pick up something useful from one of the other groups? Then again if she was going to be in a group with more Ravenclaws she was sure they would prove smarter than her and help her figure it out. "So what are Bloom and Dymphna like? Are they nice?" Hestia pressed, looking up at Reid. "Did Dymphna start the group? You said to ask her so I was just assuming she's kind of in charge." Hestia stopped herself from speaking more, chewing on her tongue a bit. She knew she was probably talking too much, but she just couldn't help herself sometimes. The girl was brimming with questions and thoughts at all moments. Maybe that was why she was in Ravenclaw.

Reid held his quill in his hand, gently rolling it between his fingers. He was glad she seemed a little more relaxed than before, it was hard to make people relax around him sometimes. It seemed that she accepted to attending the group, he should get on a recruitment committee of some sort. He was pretty good at finding people to join clubs, that or it was sheer luck on his end. "What are they like?" he echoed, pausing to think.

He was still not so sure about his status with Bloom, especially after the Owlery. Confused was the best feeling he could describe aside from his unhappy disposition as of late. He was afraid he had ruined a good friendship, despite the other person might wanting more. "Both of them are nice, smart too. Bloom is pretty easygoing and Dymph is pretty reliable." he truthfully answered.

He knew them for a short period of time, yet he was quite comfortable around the two Ravenclaw girls nonetheless. It was only this hiccup, well cough, in his friendship with Bloom that bothered him lately. He's never had to 'reject' someone and the feeling was terrible, but it would be more terrible if he said otherwise.

"Dymphna is in charge to be fair, she's the one who proposed it out of the three of us. I think we'll all get an equal input in things though." He didn't take Dymph to be someone who'd be a steel fisted study group leader, he had no qualms about it.
