--- The Slytherin who became a Gryffindor ---
Kim glanced over at Sage as the girl spoke of how she'd gotten her letter. A normal method, nothing special, it was how all wizarding folk got their mail. How else would they get letters? The fact that it had dropped on her head made his lips twitch a little. After all, if her reflexes had been better she could have caught it as it was descending, before it made contact with her head. There were 3 things to always keep in mind at all times for any pureblood wizard/witch.

Training to obtain instinctual reflexes, good posture and a knack for getting out of unexpected situations were important to always be on top of, no matter who you might be or what you might face. Starting young was the best way to do this, but even if you started late you wouldn't be too bad. It was at least better than being completely helpless. Sophia's reaction to this news though made him raise a brow. It seemed she didn't know anything about the owls.

That surprised him.

Such a thing was basic knowledge. The strange man hadn't told her anything about this?

Well, perhaps the thought hadn't occurred to him. Kim was drawn from his thoughts when Sophia turned to face him and with a rather animated face asked if he'd gotten an owl delivery too. "Of course. Owls are the usual method of delivery for wizarding folk. You'll be using them too. If you don't own a personal one, you can always use one of the Hogwarts ones. They have an owlery tower somewhere, I've heard." He told her.

Unlike a lot of students, his parents had told him what to expect when he reached Hogwarts.

The train continued to move along but now it was slowing its pace, in preparation for its eventual stop near the where the castle was located. It would stop beside a large lake and the students would pile into boats which would then take them across the water. Once they had crossed the lake, thestral-drawn carriages would be waiting for them to take them up to the gates of Hogwarts. The scenery would be quite beautiful to watch as the carriages moved past.

Upon reaching the gates of the castle, it was there that they would follow their leader into Hogwarts and proceed through the hallway until they reached the Great Hall.

Kim looked out the window and could see Hogwarts in the distance. They weren't there yet but it was getting pretty close. He glanced back over at the two girls and picked up his book to place it back into his robes on the right side. Making sure his wand was inside the left pocket of his robes, he checked his other pockets. Self-inking quill and a piece of parchment paper inside his left inner pocket? Check. Sugar quill in his right inner pocket? Check. Good to go.

He glanced over at Sage and Sophia again.

The trip wasn't over yet, as they still had the boat ride and carriage ride, but there was no guarantee they'd be on the same one. Best say goodbyes ahead of time, in case this was it. "It was fun. See you on the flipside." Kim told them and the train started to pull to a halt. Outside, those inside would be able to see a huge lake and various boats and people there waiting for the students to get off the train to ferry them across. When it stopped, Kim got up.

Lips twitching in amusement, Sage listened as Sophia spoke of her encounter.

It did not sound like a pleasant one, either. The wizard assigned to Sophia seemed like he’d wanted to get his job done and dusted in the quickest way possible, without regard for his ward’s welfare. Then again, if you just had a day to collect a fledgling witch who didn’t know she was a witch, get her magical supplies before shipping her off to some school far away - Sage supposed she’d be grumpy, too.

“Ugh, bloke sounds like an arse.” Sage intoned, shaking her head. But it did not seem like Sophia was hung up about her treatment, she was rattling off rather excitedly, perking up at the very idea of owls. Understandably, Sage didn’t think those feathery couriers were anything to marvel at - still, this was Sophia they were talking about.

Sage inclined her head to hear Kim’s response next. He was more matter-of-fact with his answer, factual even to the point of being helpful. He seemed to know much about the inner workings of the castle, too. As much as she relied on her parents and Gus for information, there wasn’t much to be gleaned from anecdotes and trivia they’ve recounted from their time in Hogwarts. She would be lying if she said she wasn’t a little envious of Kim’s insightful background.

In the distance, beyond the glass and the lake that stretched out for what seemed like miles, there lay a ghostly outline of a castle. The evening fog had obscured much of it, but Sage recognized those turrets and towers. Moving photographs of Hogwarts could only capture so much grandeur, yet even that wouldn’t be enough to compare with the real thing.

Sage realized she’d soon step within those halls, like her parents before her did and walk the ever-growing distance of Gus’ footsteps. Her throat felt a bit dry at the thought.

The train slowed and the brakes screeched as it reached Hogsmeade station. Kim had gotten up first, perhaps to join the throng of students lining the aisle in their haste to get off the train.

“See you at the castle.” Sage nodded, slinging her knapsack across her back. Nervously, she pulled on the cuff of her droopy socks, though she tried her best to appear calm as she waited for Sophia.

“Shall we go, then?”

Shortly after her reflection of the joys of owls, Sophia followed her friends’ eyes to the window of the Hogwarts Express.

Because of the deceptively long trip - which, thanks to Sage and Kim, felt far shorter than it was - it was now quite dark outside, but Sophia would have to be blind to miss the sight before her.

The moon reflected beautifully off the lake’s surface, and it was quite beautiful. However, it was only a small distraction from the grandeur in the distance just beyond it.

Sophia’s nervous reading of her copy of Hogwarts, A History could never prepare her for Hogwarts’ beauty. She’d known before even stepping onto the train that she was going to be going to a castle, but this was more than that. It was otherworldly.

Sophia only faintly noticed the train stopping. In fact, it was only when Kim stood and Sage readied her own belongings that she finally realized that this was it. This was all finally real to her. The panic and excitement battled within her.

A farewell from Kim and a verbal nudge from Sage finally snapped Sophia back into the moment.

With a smile and a belly full of butterflies, she nodded.

“Let’s go.”
