2022, Stage 2 Hufflepuff vs. Ravenclaw: Match 1

Glaring daggers through the smoke, a self-satisfied smirk made itself at home on the young wizard's face. Thomas was happy to hit; he had been told his Flipendos packed a particular punch. Though he preferred spells with a little more elegance, he was not above simple, brute force with his casting.

Replying to his dueling partner, Tom offered, "Let's keep the momentum going, no?" His tone was cheerful, despite his annoyance with the smoke he found himself to be in high spirits. Perhaps it was because he had yet to truly be targeted, save Cody's odd spells... Thomas didn't consider the attempts of the first year he was up against to be anything worth worrying about, with the ease that he dodged them.

The match had claimed its first casualty. Everything happened at once and Ana could barely piece it together until after everything had happened. Cody had attacked Pericles, sending the Ravenclaw a rather painful-looking Flipendo. Logan also attacked Pericles, but her spell went array, likely due to circumstances mentioned shortly. Pericles targeted Logan with a Wind Jinx, but the spell didn't make contact. Thomas did the same as Pericles, but with much different results. His spell rendered Logan unconscious and Ana quickly rushed forward upon realizing this.

"Stop, stop, stop!" she called, bringing the match to a pause until the unconscious girl was removed from the platform. Swallowing, Ana waited a moment to compose herself. While she played Quidditch, which was arguably a bit more up close and personal in terms of its violence, she was always rather unnerved by watching duellists collapse before her. "And, restart!"

A triumphant smile broke out on his face as his spell knocked out his adversary. The boy was elated, visibly so, and as the smoke finally cleared his other opponent would be able to see that there wasn’t an ounce of remorse. It was part of the sport, Thomas would argue, winning was nothing to be ashamed of.

He cast a disparaging look at Cody when his partner was hit with a spell. "Aw, you give up on trying to hit me, kiddo?" Thomas’ tone was drenched with an ironic sort of pity, still grinning obscenely. It was venomous, intentionally so. He patted his chest, as if to invite the Hufflepuff to resume casting spells at him. "C’mon, wipe this smile off my face, before I wipe the floor with you in this duel."

When the duel resumed, Tom’s taunts would come to a screeching halt, like a rope suddenly drawn taut. His focus was nigh instantaneous.

YES! Cody exclaimed triumphantly in his mind. When Cody's spell hit Perci, Cody had to show off somehow. Perhaps after the duel, Cody must win in order for it to mean something.

But when Thomas said something in a mocking tone to Cody, he felt as if he was estranged. He realized he now had to pay the opponents back for knocking out @Adeline Hughes and knocking out his fellow dueling opponent. Cody said one thing to him, his blood boiling hotter than a fiery sea. "YOU- YOU MURDERED HER! THIS IS YOUR FAULT! TASTE THE VENGEANCE OF CODY, FEEL THE BOOM OF CHAOS! I AM THE CHAOS RINGLEADER!" Perhaps Cody should've kept quiet. He did state his role in Bosses of Organized Mischief, and he knew that Logan wasn't murdered. He just wanted something to blame the third years for, even if it was entirely false, and not true.

And Cody stopped, as well as Thomas did, when the unconscious body was gone.

Logan was not surprised when everything went black, she was exhausted and just wanted to sleep for a week. Everything hurt as well, from the ache in her legs to the pounding that was echoing throughout her head. Sure, she was disappointed that she was the first one out again, but at this point she did not care, it was just a duel in the end and there would be more in the future.

"Let's keep the momentum going, no?"" Tom had said.
"Right," replied Peri, brief but resolute. He readied his wand and cast, yet his aim went wide as he leapt from the path of Logan's spell, only to find himself in the line of Cody's Flipendo. The Ravenclaw grunted on impact, narrowly kept his footing, looking worse for wear. The saving grace was the fact that Tom's spell struck Logan down. "One down," he observed. It sounded like a compliment. He wouldn't cheer, or gloat, to avoid being disrespectful. Tom took care of that for the both of them, and soon a wild array of words was slung back across the stage. Pericles frowned. "Tom," he scolded sternly, "all of your teasing has set off the first year." That boy had lungs.

The match seemed to settle down a bit, at least spell wise, once Logan was removed. Cody's spell didn't go anywhere near Thomas, and though Thomas' attack came closer to hitting, it was also unsuccessful. Pericles seemed to be feeling unwell, but he healed himself, so that likely wasn't particularly interesting.

On the personal side of the duel, things were slightly more interesting. Evidently, Thomas' trash-talk had driven the first year rather mad. Or maybe he was just like that. Ana had no way of knowing.

Why couldn't she have a nice normal duel with nobody screaming? Ana muttered a few exasperated expletives that hopefully didn't reach her duellists' ears before sighing and intervening. "Stevenson, you sound like a fool. Compose yourself and resolve interpersonal conflicts elsewhere," she said authoritatively.

Things seemed to clear up once the duel had restarted, so hopefully that was that.

While the spells of his ally and opponent whizzed by one another, Pericles was pointing his wand inward. "Reparifors," was the nearly whispered word, and upon uttering the incantation, he was enveloped in an ethereal purple light. Lingering singes from the lightning dissipated. The frazzled state of his hair smoothed away, and on conclusion, it seemed a little life was restored to the warlock-in-progress. Pericles savored the restorative sensation for a short beat. Then his smile returned to him, and he pondered Ana's words for the opposition, calling kindly: "Are you sure you'd like to keep going, Cody? We won't look down on you if you chose to forfeit, you know."

Cody's attempt at casting Flipendo at Baines was horrible! Why would he bother with a challenging spell then? If that was how he was to deal with this. But at least Cody dodged the Wind Jinx thrown at him by Baines.

Cody looked at Ana with shame, but towards his opponents, his face still stubborn but he secretly wanted to, to not be hit by any spells. "No. Percy. I'll suffer. Thank you though."

Slowly, deliberately, Thomas looked between his partner and Cody. The use of the nickname the Hufflepuff coined was... Bewildering. Perhaps Tom's spell missed because his concentration was shaken by how offputting Percy was.

"Peri's right," Thomas began, perhaps putting subtle emphasis on his comrade's name, "but if you're determined to face the pain, I will happily oblige." He offered the last statement as a promise, cheerful and without any sign of hesitation. Thomas didn't find any joy in harming others, only in winning, but if Cody was to be so stubborn the Ravenclaw hardly saw any reason to hold back. He'd revel in the opportunity to show some child their place.
