Others speakingInteracting with @Jess MaltersLily had no idea what being sorted into Hufflepuff meant, only she was glad. Everyone sat around her was happy and smiling. She had a good feeling about this.
There was a girl sat across from her, with brown hair. Lily had seen her being sorted into Hufflepuff, like her, but couldn't quite remember her name. She was sat looking at her hands, not takling to anyone. Lily wasn't surprised. That was the one thing she wanted to do right now.
She took her yellow headband out her ears, massaged them for a moment, then put it back in and tried to think of a nice introduction. 'Crazy place, right?' No, she'll think Lily's a weirdo. 'Hi, what's your name?' No, she should introduce herself first. 'Hi, I'm Lily, what's your name?' Perfect. She thought, and soon said it. "Hi, I'm Lily, what's your name?" she said.
The girl looked up, and Lily could now see her dark hazel blue eyes. She thought they were pretty, just like her hair, which she can see was a dark blonde. When she gril replied, Lily recognised the name at once, and knew she would remember it.Banner by Lucia Fox

The Hufflepuff Table 2020-2021
Blaise took a seat, squeezing in between the other little badgers.
He didn't know anyone, and yet he was welcomed so warmly and cheerfully as if he belonged here all along - It managed to get to him.
He is still quiet and reserved at this point, but students around him will be greeted by a smile decorating the side of his face, not a look of joy and wonder but one that radiates gratitude and relief.
Suddenly it hit him - Blaise was STARVING!
All the stress and fresh experiences made him forget actually to nourish himself properly.
With great urgency, the boy started to pile pieces of food on his plate. He even managed to get some of the Lancashire hotpots in there! His favourite dish.
After getting some decent chunks of food down his throat, and sipping some delicious iced tea, Blaise started to look around at the people around him.
Most students were already deep in conversation about this or that, and Blaise found it tricky to join in. It wasn't easy due to most of the other children's knowledge of the wizarding world, allowing him very little room to jump in the conversation.
He noticed one ashen looking skinny girl sitting silently across from him - yet within earshot -, being all polite and proper. Blaise assumed it wouldn't be unheard of to try and catch her gaze or make some sort of interaction, since it SEEMED like they were in the same boat. Or maybe someone else's eyes will lock with his. That wouldn't be the most awkward thing to happen to him today.

Karkat slumped into the seat full of his "new friends" he felt heavily out of place. Just yesterday he was at a protest with his real friends and now here he was. dressed like the grim reaper and sitting at a table of smiling faces as if this was the norm. it would take some getting used to, but he supposed that it was true what they said. no matter how dumb he thought the hat to be, it never made mistakes. perhaps he needed to go on a self-finding journey or something along those lines. His mother had vaguely mentioned on the ride to the station that she had been in ravenclaw, so much for following in her footsteps. he wasn't particularly mad considering the lack of prior knowledge, but the things the hat said stood out to him. this, front, he was putting on but didn't seem to be aware of...
he looked around the table, only taking small sips from his glass every now and then. it would be nice to have a friend around here but he couldn't bring himself to find one. everyone seemed to be deeply engrossed in their conversations. He didn't have anything on his person to do so he sat. hoping someone would take the initiative he lacked. Karkat missed his friend at home dearly

The clanking of glasses and tableware filled the great hall along with the loudness of laughter and enthusiastic conversation. Students familiarising themselves with their new environment.
The plate in front of the now very full Blaise was empty with only a few crumbs and leftover sauce spread around the edges.
Blaise choked a silent burp before averting his attention back to his surroundings.
He had trouble finding students like him that are perhaps feeling a bit like outsiders. The tall boy's piercing laurel eyes scanned the Hufflepuff table. They stopped upon another rather tall boy - around Blaise's height - who seemed frustrated and quiet.
"The food is really good. You should try some Lancashire hotpot." Blaise opened loudly, clearly addressing the other young boy who sat within earshot and pointed to a large tub of piping hot stew. The tub cleared out quite fast but refilled itself every time within a few seconds.
Blaise locked eyes with the boy and stared at him intently, waiting with an anxious look in his eyes.
'This is so weird. How do you find friends with so much going on around all the time? It's so distracting!' He thought and scratched the back of his neck impatiently.

karkat almost jumped at the fact that he was being addressed. what was said? food... to tell the truth he was rather hungry. he didn't eat before he left as he wasn't expecting any of whats happened in the last hours. he should probably get something, who knows what the schedules are like here. "thanks for the suggestion", he gave a half-smile not wanting to seem rude.the stew did smell quite good. As he began to ladle it into his bowl,he looked back up at the brown-haired boy who seemed nervous. Despite all else he did want to have at least a few friends here. " my names Karkat by the way, Karkat Bosch", he introduced himself almost too formally. he'd never really liked his name, it felt strange. the steam from the soup warmed his face as he dropped the smile in fear of keeping it for too long, was interaction always this awkward? on the bright side, at least he knew he wasn't the only one not having a jolly old time. everyone seemed so connected, even the other first years. maybe he was simply out of the loop. no matter, at least here he was, starting a conversation. albiet he had himself wrapped in his thoughts at the moment.

"Don't mention it!" Blaise exclaimed.
A random student left the table, and Blaise took the opportunity to scoot closer to his new acquaintance. They were now facing each other on opposite sides of the table, and he could talk normally.
"Name's Blaise, Blaise Mallory." The boy reached his hand for a shake.
An awkward silence lingered for a moment after the two greeted each other.
"Karkat's a neat name. What do people call you for short? Kat sounds cool." Blaise paused for a moment. "Or maybe it's Van? That's even cooler!" He fired excitedly.
"My name's too short for a nickname, so it's usually either Blaise or B'." The boy shrugged.
"Did you notice non-magic people don't have the same cool names as you guys? I never once met another Blaise, and definitely not a Solomon before the sorting ceremony, and I know A LOT of muggles."
Blaise tried to keep talking to diffuse the awkward tension that he felt but didn't show. For all intents and purposes, Blaise seemed like a confident-albeit somewhat frantically talkative-young boy, looking straight in the eye when he talked and possessing a confident posture.
"Do you know a lot of muggles?" Blaise raised an eyebrow as he bombarded another question onto poor Karkat, who could probably barely keep up.
'Man, I really hope I'm not messing it up.' He thought to himself.

Karkat smiled warmly as the boy sat next to him and the two shook hands. "i had a lot of nicknames back at home, karkles, karkitty, kk, etc. but just kar is fine",he explained, almost grimacing at the old nicknames given during many a discord call. he smiled and nodded as the boy continued to talk, talkative people were nice, meant the conversations were less work. "we could give you a cool nickname, like...", he stopped for a moment to think. "blaisemeister, yeah that's friggin' sick". it was the first thing that came to mind and was rather dumb in retrospect. "ive seen some interesting names over the years",he replied with a glazed glance. "I had a friend back at home named Sollux, real cracker basket if you ask me but he was fun" he then continued in response to the next question,"ive known a lot considering I thought I was a muggle my whole life", he chuckled. it still felt unreal to be thrust into this new world with barely any information,at least he was making friends. (he'd never been the best at it) maybe this was the start to a new friendship. they could get into wacky wizard hijinks like in the sitcoms.

"Yeah, I think Kar works best!" Blaise exclaimed after chuckling a bit from the nicknames mentioned by Karkat.
When Karkat suggested the nicknames for him, Blaise made a comically exaggerated expression.
"I think I'm gonna dodge on this one, mate!"
When Karakt mentioned Sollux, Blaise couldn't stop himself from letting out a short snort of caged laughter. He started to feel bad about how funny these names sounded to him. He's gonna have to start getting used to those.
"Sollux sounds like a real party." The boy joked lightly.
Blaise's eyes widened a bit when Karkat talked about living as a muggle for most of his life.
"That's insane! Didn't things happen around you? You know, weird things that don't make sense?"
Blaise paused for a moment.
"It's probably gonna sound weird to you, but I kind of always wished I was a muggle, you know?"
The boy's eyes wandered a bit as he reminisced.
"I didn't really want magic, so I pretty much just stayed out with non-magic friends most of the time. My sister got all of the 'magic talks',"
Blaise stopped to think for a moment.
"Well, at least for the most part. I got one before coming here. My mom is the only reason that I'm giving this a try. She got really scared when I told her I'd rather just put magic away and act like I don't have it. Like something terrible was going to happen if I did that."

Karkat nodded in agreement, most people called him Kar anyway. When hearing the response to the (kind of silly) nickname, he feigned a shocked gasp and exclaimed, "You'll need blaisemeister one day", ending with a laugh, unable to keep up the face. he smiled a bit when remembering sollux, hopefully, they would still see each other on vacation. he thought back on his early days when asked about anything strange. he couldn't remember much. "I've had some, few and far between. my dad tried to make sure I never found out about magic. that was until my mum showed up out of the blue and brought me here", he explained. he looked at the boy with a raised brow when he stopped, with a suddenly serious expression. Karkat listened intently, "why, if you don't mind me asking". he nodded to show he was listening as the conversation continued. "maybe she was right, if it goes untrained it could either fizzle out or burst out of control", he listen either option, playing it out in his mind. he felt to be in a similar boat, what if his mother had just gave up and left... he didn't want to think about that. "so is your sister here too?", he asked to change the subject.

The Hufflepuff Table 2020-2021
Evelyn sat down in a chair and sighed, "That was a hard day" she said to nobody in particular, she sighed again and shuffled her feet under the table. It had been exhausting the boat ride had been fun. And the sorting had been exciting but so nerve-racking. And now dinner, she had to talk to somebody. Otherwise, she would end up friendless for the whole seven years of her Hogwarts career. Finally, she grabbed a Porkchop and took a small bight before putting it down. the Great Hall was buzzing with other kids with there friends, just the thought made her homesick! She longed to see Beverly, and hear her say "Come on Ev! Suck it up!" a smile played at her lips, that was Beverly's favorite thing to say. Plus, she already missed the rest of her family. Her mum, dad, brother and sister. Were they thinking about her? Dis they miss her already too? She should take Beverlys advice. She needed to introduce herself and make some friends. She could always owl her family and parents toarrow. She took a deep breath and looked around, hopefully they wont think I'm crazy or weird or something like that. Spotting a girl around her age, she took a deep breath and walked over. "Hi! I'm Evelyn, Evelyn Folse whats your name?" Hopefully, this turns out alright, she thought.
