Margo frowned. Should she feign self doubt or stick with her usual confidence? Bah, who was she kidding? She was talented, but there were limits to acting. She couldn’t fake-lose her confidence! That would be dehumanising. It was like losing her smirk: impossible.

“I’d like to meet all these brainless people who, for some unknown reason, admire you.” She raised a brow in question. “Or is it possible that they don’t exist?”

There. The crisis had been successfully averted. It wasn’t that obvious she was changing the subject, was it? No. As usual she was a master at being subtle…

She suddenly realised she’d been chewing on her lip whilst grinning and there was a tiny possibility that Slava may have spotted her master manipulation whilst she was lost in thought. Subtle indeed. No matter, though. There was no way he could recover from that not-so-disguised insult. She really wasn’t trying to be mean. These things just popped out of thin air sometimes. A lot like, well, magic. The funny thing about Slava though, was that harshness seemed to draw him in further rather than push him away. She sort of liked hated him for it. Damn.

“Nemeses it is.” Margo agreed, and offered her hand for Slava to shake with a very serious look on her face. God forbid she actually like the boy’s supposed wit and charm.

Slava gasped and a hand flew to his chest in mock offense, as if he had truly been wounded by her words. Luckily, he had a large enough ego to cushion the blow, self-confidence in abundance as he responded. “Brainless? Unknown reason? Really, Margo, I thought you would notice how amazing I am by now. Of course they exist, and you will see that during the game.” She had definitely dodged the topic of the dance, but it would seem to her like he didn't really notice. Either that, or he was perfectly fine with moving on and not having to demonstrate either. It was sometimes debatable, but he did have some dignity and reputation left to maintain.

She said "Nemeses it is," and despite her serious expression, he couldn't suppress the goofy smile that only widened as he shook her hand, cementing it. She was odd, different to others, but it was his kind of odd. Yes, he liked her. He hoped he would see her again. She would make a fine friend—sorry, nemesis. Arch enemy, yeah, that was it, for sure… Slava inhaled sharply, a sense of finality provided for him to lead into his next statement. “Well, I should go. If we talk for too long, you will adore me like everyone else and our enmity will vanish so there will be no fun. See ya around, Margo.” Another smirk and a brisk wave and he was gone.

Margo raised an eyebrow, mouth slightly parted for a second. The ego that this boy dared possess! She cracked her mental knuckles in preparation. Putting him in his place would require more work. They’d have to meet again, possibly for hours and hours of lovely, ruthless banter. What. A. Hardship. But for now, she needed to ensure her superiority. “Amazing is subjective. Besides you’re definitely not as amazing as me.”

Really, it was surprising that they could even speak to each other considering their differences. Competitive, witty, delusional fools with overblown egos? No, they had nothing in common at all.

And suddenly Slava was leaving. For some reason she was finidng it very hard not to pout. Of course, pumping his over-sized head with even a sliver more of praise was not an option, so she refrained to the best of her ability.

Before Slava could make his sudden exit though, Margo sighed dramatically. “I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. Until we meet again, my fr- foe!”

She did not consider the boy a friend. He was irritating, very irritating. But oh, he could make her laugh. When the Russian maniac was finally gone, Margo allowed a shining smile to spread across her face. Nope, they were definitely not friends.
