hey forgive my non-American ignorance (kind of hoping it is only an American thing and I haven't been living in oblivion for my whole life haha) but what's the interstate? does it just mean when you cross over onto the next state?

The interstate is this mega highway that connects across all the states. It helps travelers get to places quickly. The interstate branches off on things called exits. Exits lead to different cities or interstates.

EDIT: Here's a map of the interstate highways. This doesn't include exits. If it did, you wouldn't be able to see anything because there's so many.

It was for me. Someone in my driving group almost sideswiped a police car, and then they turn their lights on and pulled over. Thankfully, they didn't make us stop. I literally had a minor panic attack in the backseat.
