It's not min/maxing, it's seeing that I could have given Oliver a more impactful ability instead. Added even more "flavor" with a more suiting ability. As you know, it takes 12 months of waiting to choose an ability. And character retcons aren't unusual in roleplay. Some of us do it with our characters appearance already.

The change of mechanics was announced to be in the testing phase and may be reverted. If there would be a change in the mechanics, which lowers an ability's potential, then the ability would be buffed.Oliver Hart wrote: 11 Aug 2020, 02:42 Advanced Casting, since critical hits are now their own separate thing done with a 1d10 and not connected to the 1d20 hit check anymore.
If we looked closer at Advanced Casting: if we accept the 1d10, then Advanced Casting becomes more powerful, because you get a 20% chance instead of a 10% chance (9-10 of 10 instead of 19-20 of 20). So in this case, reverting the mechanics back would make it less impactful than it was in the Chess Combat.
You can reach me in DMs for more explanations on the balancing part if you're interested.

I understand and that's all good. My point is though that I picked Advanced Casting to have a 10% chance at something people got once in 20 attempts. Now everyone has that chance and critical hits are less rare. So now it's Oliver commonly doing something rare instead of Oliver rarely doing something exceptional.

Advanced Casting has a major buff with that they are doing in Chess Combat. It would have a greater impact, rather than less. As Meenauh has said, that change is in an unreleased system (Chess Combat) that is in public testing to see if it will even work. Major changes and clarifications will likely happen as the abilities did predate the development and release of systems. We have several systems under development including dueling/chess combat, potions and broom racing. We also have quidditch which is released and will likely see changes at the end of each season as we discover what is broken, unbalanced, in need of clarification due to inconsistent moderation and what needs to be added or removed from the site. This is something most games do and we are not an exception of this.
Would giving a buff to advanced casting essentially doubling the effect be something that we would be offering players an opportunity to change out of. No. Would a nerf? Not unless it was incredibly drastic. Obviously if it was removed or changed entirely that would be a different story. However the potential change (buff) there is not a finalized change.
As for Monster Hunter. I am disappointed that an aesthetic name is being used as the reason for hunting down players. Considering I wrote it, it makes me incredibly uncomfortable. There is a thread up in staff to review Monster Hunter, to clarify it for a consistent answer.

I think that it would be useful if a new thread icon was added for shops.
I set up my own shop recently and was a bit confused as to which icon I should give it - it's not exactly any of them, as the only thing people should be posting there is their forms, and I will be posting the completed orders.
If there is one I should be putting shops under I'm sorry haha, but I think a 'shop' icon would be useful

'Shops' are the type of threads created by players and not an on-site developed solution. You can put a 'conversation' icon or 'information' icon to that, which would mean no Word Count requirements are expected in the thread to simplify moderation for prefects and professors.Lucia Fox wrote: 16 Aug 2020, 09:13 I think that it would be useful if a new thread icon was added for shops.

Gender neutral options?
Hi not gonna do a whole rant.
It really sucks that members can only have their characters identify as the binary genders, and I was wondering if gender neutral bathrooms/bedrooms could be added, as well as an 'Other' option when selecting gender while first creating a character.

I already answered this here and quoted feedback from the suggestion we got.Jackson Lockwood wrote: 21 Aug 2020, 23:56 Gender neutral options?

"A whole rant" is unnecessary so you don't need to do one. Ranting will not help change anything. We are trying to do the fairest thing for everyone. As explained in the answer:
We don't want to make a third dorm, as that's - again - segregating them and we are trying hard to be inclusive. In order to be fair to everyone, this is a much larger discussion that you might believe and it's a lot harder to code than you think it is.we make a third dorm for non-binary players segregating them from the community (which is not something we would want to do since we really try hard to be inclusive)
The post already answers everything but... to repeat:
A thing that our non-binary folks do is they place their preferred pronouns in their profile or they mark their posts with their preference. Gender being a spectrum, even non-binary fails to encompass that portion of the player population unfortunately considering we have gender fluid to consider as well. The male and female aspect of the site is merely based on genetics, not on identity. This suggestion has been brought up before and unfortunately we have not found a suitable means of creating additional options because the male and female designation is used to give dorm access unless we make a third dorm for non-binary players segregating them from the community (which is not something we would want to do since we really try hard to be inclusive). The other options would be to exclude non-binary players from dorms, giving them less (which would be unfair). Another would be to give them access to both, however that would be an advantage and brings up issues of fairness. The final option would be to allow them to pick and choose, meaning that they can change their designation at will. this would be a burden to moderate and again grant a distinctive advantage to a singular portion of the player base that can change their accesses ad lib. For this reason, we have stuck with gender being based on biology rather than identity in terms of what shows up for you.
We would need a lot more discussion on how to make additional options possible in a fair way.

Hi, I have two suggestions for helping new students:
Kevin Miller but you can call me Kev!
1) I know that the prefects, professors and other students are here to answer our questions, but I think that it could be interesting to set up a sponsorship system. That means that people who have an account for a long time (a fews months), can offer help to the new players: answer their questions, help them writing their first RPGs, also help them creating their Encyclopedia, and encouraging them posting on OOC Floods,... Because, even if lots of things are explained in the owl our House Headmaster sent us at the beginning, it is very impressive to began talking with people who are here for a long time, and we feel very lost at the beginning (there are many things to do, many subjects that you don't even know they exist,...). And you know that you can ask questions to the staff but as I told you, you don't dare it because it is too impressive! So the godfathers and godmothers would undertake to help their godchildren until they tell them that they no longer need their help. I think that a system like this can reassure the news students (new players). For example, we create a subject on which each new student can ask for a godfather/godmother in a list (everyone who want to be godfather/godmother have to fill certain conditions to be registered in the list) and then a godfather/godmother can propose to help the student who need them.
What do you think about these suggestions?2) Maybe we can create an OOC Flood on which only new students and staff can post a message so that it will be easier for new students to discuss (because when you are new, you don't dare posting in a flood where there is lots of old students). And they could also make friends who are new like them and it could make them feel more confortable in the site and less lost.
