The Dancing Squid

The fire was glinting in Donny's eyes, his glasses were no more than a million pieces by now. "I'd really fancy a leaky burger right now," Donny said, his stomach grumbling. He always seemed to be hungry, but now wasn't the best timing. "So... how are were going to sneak back in?" he asked Donny, for it was dark and late, and no professor nor prefect would allow late comings. "AND Hufflepuff has no chance at the house cup!" said thinking about those Slytherins. What was so special about them. Donny continued to try and spark conversation.

Donny threw some pebbles into the open fire, flaring up at each attempt. It was the end of the month, and Slytherin was destined to have won the cup already. He could already see their menacing, snarling faces as they prowled the school with their noses up. He looked at Donny, his eyebrows raised as he drew a figure of the dancing squid in the dry mixture of sand and soil. He would certainly never forget this experience and then, he had an idea. He kindly waited for Ruka to answer before supposing something not so dangerous that would be quite creative indeed...

It still felt abit weird, that as a Prefect she was able to roam the Castle and Grounds after dark. It gave her a certain sense of freedom. It felt pretty nice. She carried her bag with artsupplies with her for who knows what pretty occasion. During her daily patrols, Nico spotted a light near the Lake. What's this? At this time? A fire? Nico breathed in bruskly and jogged over to the shore.

As soon as she came closer, she noticed it wasn't the surrounding nature that caught on fire, but it was a small bonfire. She stopped in her tracks as she heard two masculin voices, from behind a big rock. What on earth were these kids doing here? She sneaked closer, peeking at the duo. It were a Gryffindor and a Huffelpuf. What a surprise..

"AND Hufflepuff has no chance at the house cup!"

Some sore losing over here. Nico shook her head slowely, slightly rolling with her eyes. Out of the blue she stepped passed the rock, right infront of the two. 'First of all. Slytherin worked hard to get where they are now. The only reason Huffelpuff or Gryffindor didn't win was because you guys just didn't work hard enough.' She said stern as she looked down at them, standing behind the bonfire. The flames put a menacing light onto her face, a intimidating shadow on her eyes. 'Also, just sneaking out of the castle to have some fun at the Great Lake doesn't help your House at all to win the House Cup.'

She points up at the sky. 'Not only that, but it's also past curfew. So... instead of getting any housepoints... You two get detention.' She folded her arms and held onto the strap of her bag. 'Unless ofcourse, you guys have an astounding excuse for lounging here in the middle of the dark.'

Ruka laughed a bit, rubbing over his own stomach as it grumbled at Donny's words, as if to agree with him. It had been a while since dinner, and they had skipped desert, and almost drowning had really zapped a lot of his energy. "Still a while to fo till breakfast," he pointed out, chuckling lightly. His skin was slowly drying thanks to the fire, and the chilly night air was slowly becoming less painful on his chest. "How about we just don't?" he asked, looking up at the stars for a while. "It's been a while since I last slept outside. We're already here, no point in going all the way back again, right?"
He grinned, holding out his hand to warm it by the fire while his other searched for his wand.
A moment of panic coursed through him before he saw his wand peeking out from Donny's bag, and he quickly grabbed it while listening to his friend complaining about Slytherin winning the housecup while neither Hufflepuff nor Gryffindor really had any chance of catching up. "I know," he said, sighing in frustration. His forst experience of a school challenge and his House was losing to the one House with the worst reputation.
He was about to say something else when a stranger's voice from the dark startled him more than the Giant Squid had earlier on.
A girl in Slytherin robes stood right by their fire, the Prefect badge glistening in the light. She looked eery with the flames illuminating her face, and if Ruka had been able to choose between having to deal with her or the squid, he would have chosen the squid.
"I fell in the lake," he blurted out, looking over at Donny with a deer-in-headlights expression. "Before curfew. And Donny heard me and pulled me out. He really saved me, maybe at least don't punish him?" He tried to put on a convincing smile, cheeks tinting red. "I just wanted to dry by the fire a bit and he didn't want to leave me alone, it's all my fault, really!"

Donny's mouth gaped suddenly. He shut it quickly as he he looked up at the girl. "He wasn't alone!" Donny said, trying to save Ruka from a solo detention. "I was... trying to find creatures in the lake- I snuck out and saw Ruka- He didn't do anything wrong!" Donny blurted, he was a really bad liar. "We-we were just leaving too! We didn't want anyone slipping in the water!" he said, his gaze at the shiny prefect badge. He thought of all the possible places he could have been other than soaking wet in front of a fire after curfew. He could have been sleeping in his warm mustard yellow bed, sleeping long and peacefully under his plush covers in the cozy Hufflepuff boys dorms.

He and Ruka exchanged looks. Ruka looked like he'd just seen a basilisk, and Donny looked like he had a bad case of the flu. He was dumbstruck with the very thought of getting detention on his first few months at Hogwarts, but if he had to be honest, getting busted for defeating a giant squid... he was pretty good with that. "So... are we getting detention?" he asked sheepishly, trying to break the ice...

Nico folded her arms and shook her head slowely. 'You two. Put out the fire and come with me to the Castle. Immediately. This stunt of yours could've gotten yourself killed.' She looked at their wet robes and watched the lake over her shoulder.

'If I see you here, past curfew again...' She held onto the strap of her bag tightly. 'I don't think you want to find out. I don't like giving detention, but this is just reckless behaviour.' Her iceblue eyes stared at them. 'As for your sore loser behaviour considering not winning the House Cup, I might have a fitting punishment for you two.' She walked abit further, stopping to wait for them to fullfill their last tasks for the evening.

'Some of us Slytherins will be able to get a pet this month, isn't that fun? And which pets can you get? A rat, a cat... or...' She tilted her head slightly, resting her index finger on her chin, looking puzzeld. 'An owl? Yes.' Putting her arms down she giggled. 'I'm sure you won't forget what an owl is after this punishment I'll give you.' She brushed her hair behind her ear. 'Now, come along. I'll walk you to your Dorms. It's bedtime.' Her voice was cold and stern again as she led the way back to the castle.
