Welcoming Feast
1 August 2026, Hogwarts Campgrounds
Summer camp had started, and it was the very first evening. The welcoming feast was in full swing when Ginevra graced it with their presence. They had been lurking in their cabin, lying on the bed reading a book in peace and quiet. After all, in no way or form was it their wish to come to this camp; it was solely their parents’. But Bones, who was their complete opposite and wanted to socialise, drew them out of their room, and since the child would have followed the webber anywhere, they went with it. It led them, of course, to their most detested place, with the most overwhelming crowd of other children – the Welcoming Feast.
They let Bones crawl up onto their right shoulder and adjusted their clothes as they approached. They did not plan to socialise that night, but turning back now would have been far more embarrassing. They walked up to the entrance to the event.
On entering, they were given the opportunity to pull a slip of parchment on which, they were told, a prompt for interactions would be written. Unwillingly, they extended their hand to pick one, though they did not plan on acting on it. Out of politeness, they took the parchment and entered the event.
They instantly recognised the table for their department – the Department of Mysteries. It was decorated in black and purple, which drew Ginevra in, as they had a particular liking for aesthetics and beauty, and the way the table was curated satisfied them deeply. It had gold accents, candles floated above it, and the surfaces were adorned with gilded constellations. It looked mysterious yet inviting to such a curious mind as the child’s, so they walked towards it.
They sat down, looking around with disdain. Why had they come here? They didn’t know, but it was too late now. Ginevra took a menu in their hands and started reading. Even though the evening wasn’t as loud as they had expected, they felt their energy draining away. They focused on the words in the menu, but all they could think about was whether there was a graveyard nearby where they could relax in the quiet of the dead, with whom they found the most comfort.

The food was quite delicious and Rain was delighted with his choices. The only thing was getting some more to drink because he ran out fast. As Rain was about halfway through with his food he noticed someone sitting down by him in his periphery. Looking over Rain realized that it was one of his cabin mates, Elara.
Once she had settled down Elara turned to Rain and asked him if he liked the food. Needing a second to process the question Rain took one more bite of his venison. Swallowing Rain answered, “Yeah, it’s pretty good. Not as good as my papa’s jambalaya but still really delicious. I like chocolate cauldrons, one of my favorites. Did they have any of your favorites?”.
After answering Elara’s question and asking one of his own Rain looked by his plate and noticed her slip of paper. “Oh, what prompt did you get? I have to find someone from a different department so that’ll be something”. Rain was still not looking forward to that. But maybe when Elara and he finished with their food they could go around together to fulfill their prompts. While he waited for Elara to answer Rain went to dig back in to his food. He just had a couple more bites of his venison left and on more mini chocolate cauldron.

Alfie had not changed for dinner. He had considered it, especially as wearing school robes had not been a popular choice among his cabinmates. In the end he’d decided against changing, as he thought that changing might only draw attention to how inappropriate his non-magical clothing was. He’d only brought a handful of outfits other than the school robes and mostly this had consisted of items from his in primary school uniform. He did have one dress shirt and a tie that his mother had insisted he pack. Alfie had thought it unnecessary, but she countered with “You never know if you’ll be invited to a dance or a nice dinner and then where would you be?” She’d be loving this, Alfie thought, as he watched some of his cabin mates dressing for dinner. As for his dress shirt and tie, Alfie had considered the prospect of needing them so unlikely that he’d stuffed them rather carelessly in the bottom of his trunk. Considering their current wrinkly state, he figured his unfashionable black robe was still the better option.
Arriving for the dinner, he was both intimidated by the fancy decor, and relieved to see that the dress of the other participants was varied enough that seemingly nothing would have looked out of place. There were even some people in their school robes so if he couldn’t be fashionable he would not be totally out of place.
Not that he felt at home amongst all this magical opulence. He waded in, feeling more than a little self conscious. He accepted a card, which he assumed was his seating assignment, before making his way to the buffet tables. He had never in his life seen anything like the food options on offer. For Alfie, going to Holyhead’s one Italian restaurant on his mother’s birthday was as fancy as he ever got. He didn’t recognize most of the dishes, and consulting the names on the menu had not cleared up his confusion. So he selected a small amount of a variety of dishes, assuming that he was bound to like some of it. He ran out of room on his plate before making it to the puddings, but vowed he’d come back for that blackberry trifle as soon as he had a chance.
The cider was the most recognizable of the drinks, so Alfie prepared to take one of those, but first he thought it best to consult his seating assignment before he ran out of hands. As he examined the card however, he discovered it had nothing to do with seating. Instead, it was emblazoned with the following statement:
Alfie was a bit surprised, but assumed it was some sort of scavenger hunt. He looked up and after only a brief scan of the crowd he realized he was in luck. There was a striped shirt and it was even being worn by someone he knew. Tucking the card away he grabbed a cider, and wove his way through the crowd until he found himself at the table of one Henry Holbrook. Not uncoincidentally, this was also the Department of Mysteries table (not that Alfie noticed that before he sat down).
“I hope you don’t mind if I join you,” he said, already placing his plate and mug at the place across from Henry.“It’s just that I have this card.” He withdrew it and showed the writing to Henry. “You're the only stripey bloke I see.” He grinned as he sat down.
“Do you suppose we get some kind of prize for these?” he asked, glancing back at the card. The original assignment had vanished though. The card now read:
“Huh.” Well, that was awkward. Alfie hadn’t the foggiest what either of those things were. He didn’t bother showing this one to Henry.
“So what did you get?” he asked, changing the subject. On second thought, what if Henry’s card asked a magic question that he couldn’t answer? He could always stuff his mouth, he was supposed, to buy himself time. Worse comes to worse, he might be able to fake choking. Alfie took a bite. Luckily he really liked mushrooms.

WC 283 Text #B97A84; italics OOC Notes open to any interactions!Elara listened as Rain answered, taking another bite of her pumpkin tartlet. She smiled faintly when he mentioned his papa’s jambalaya. “I’ve never had jambalaya before. What’s it like?” She finished the last piece of the tartlet before moving on to the risotto. She took a small bite, then another, taking her time as she listened to Rain talk. “No, they didn’t have my favourites, but I like the food so far.” She took another bite before finishing the risotto. With the savoury food gone, Elara picked up her spoon and turned her attention to the blackberry Eton mess. She tried a small spoonful, then took another. “I like this one too.” Elara took another sip of her cinnamon cider. The glass was already about half empty. She set it down beside her plate and listened as Rain continued talking.
When Rain asked about her card, her gaze dropped to the small folded card beside her plate. She picked it up and unfolded it again. “Mine says I have to ask someone what enchanted object they would most like to own. I don't think I've ever thought about that before.” She placed the card beside her plate again and took another spoonful of the Eton mess. Rain mentioned that his prompt required him to find someone from another department. Elara listened quietly as she finished her dessert. Once the Eton mess was gone, she set her spoon down and took another sip of her cider. There was only a quarter of her cider left. Elara looked at the card again. How am I supposed to approach someone? She rested her hand beside the card for a moment before reaching for her glass again.

⚝⚝ A welcoming feast. What a Hogwarts thing to do. Most summer camps would probably just have a campfire, and marshmallows. But we had a full banquet.
After arriving at the camp, I had gone to my cabin to get sorted out, and I’d got changed.
Then, I left the cabin by myself, and walked to the feast. I wasn’t hungry, but it would be weird just not turning up, so I followed the crowds. I stopped at the buffet table, taking a glass of “blackberry sage cordial.” I took a sip. It was actually okay.
I moved to the side, out of people’s way, before looking at my small piece of white card.
It was a socialisation prompt, which said “Look for someone who obviously has a pet.” Well, looking around, that was easy. I had immediately spotted someone coming in, who I didn’t recognise. She had bright ginger hair, and a lizard on her shoulder. So, unless she had just picked up someone else’s pet, I had completed my task.
I sat down at my table. It was navy blue, and covered with letters, sealed with a logo I didn’t recognise. I went to open one, but it was blank. Decoration. Nobody from my cabin was there yet, so I sat back, watching as people came in. Maybe I would get a tartlet. But not yet. ⚝⚝

Wow! Rain couldn’t imagine not having had jambalaya before. Though I guess it makes sense with us being in the UK. Rain went on to explain jambalaya to Elara since she was curious. “Jambalaya is a rice dish in the southern US. My papa’s from there and that’s actually where I was born. The dish typically has chicken, sausage, shrimp, and some type of vegetable. Papa normally puts okra and peppers when he makes it. It’s delicious. When we visit my papa’s family we always make sure to get some. I think my nana’s jambalaya is better than my papa’s”. Just thinking about it was making him nostalgic for it. Now I really want some.
After he finished explaining Rain watched Elara finishing up her meal as she answered his question about the buffet having her favorites. It didn’t but she still enjoyed the meal. That’s when they discussed what were their prompts. Elara’s was to ask someone what enchanted item they would like to own. Rain agreed with Elara about not really thinking about owning specific enchanted items. His home was full of them and he’d never felt the need to get other things that didn’t have to do with magical creatures. “Yeah, I’ve never really given that much thought either. For me I have to talk to someone from a different department so maybe when we finish eating we can find other people together. That way it’ll be less scary”, Rain suggested.
