The Deep End

Even though she held her wand in hand, Maisie felt more free than she normally did in a competition. Perhaps it was because she wasn't looking at the same Hufflepuffs who were about to murder her for the fourth time. Out here, with the wind brushing her cheeks, there were options.
Still, as they took off, Maisie did what she often did on the piste: she looked around and identified the threats. So, kicking off she made her way over to Aodhan and collided with him just so as to knock him off his broom. But the force was so much and as he seemed to be doing the exact same thing, they both fell off their brooms. Maisie blinked as she hit the ground, looking up to see traces of dirt along her shoes. Biting her lip, she felt stupid for how this had turned out. Maybe she did suck at everything. And yet...
Up above, she could clearly see everyone else flying off while Althea also landed a great hit. The obstacles proved somewhat problematic, but her team did the best they could. And—was it?—oh, yes, Lucille was in the lead! After getting a helping hand from Avery, the Gryffindor was ahead.
A wide smile came across her face as she instinctively clapped lightly.
She might be on the ground, but it was a sacrifice worth making—Lucille had proven that.

XX𝕿he day Violence had decided she would sign up for the unofficial broom racing match, the knowledge she had about the sport was plain zero. Now as she was on her broom, her knowledge remained the same. Of course, it was not the best decision to dive into something headfirst without having any idea how to do it and Violence knew that reading through the rules and common gameplay strategies would have definitely been much, much better. But she really couldn’t blame herself. The sudden pile of homework after the exeat weekend had taken up all her time. Apart from homework and meals, she had also made friends, or well, acquaintances which had required her to actually spend time with said acquaintances and not focus on her homework. How she had managed to find the time to sign up for broom racing, she didn’t know.
As the race finally began, Violence gripped her broom tightly. She told herself she would not focus on any spell-casting. After all, if she did not cast any spells, maybe no one would notice her and she could race to the end without any issues other than the obstacles. And even for those, the only thing she had to do was try not to fall off her broom and zoom ahead. But then again, she might need to cast spells at the obstacles, and it would not be a very good idea to just fly idle if her opponents were casting spells at her. She would definitely need to cast back at them. But that was for when she was being targeted. So for the time being, Violence decided that the safest play would be to just fly forward.
As she leaned forward, however, she felt a sudden boost of speed. A squeal left her mouth as she looked behind at the person who had sent her flying ahead. Before she could even make sense of how the players were lined up behind her, an opponent collided into her and she was knocked off her broom. ‘Great! The one thing I decide to do is not fall off my broom and now I’m on the ground. Perfect!’ She rolled her eyes as she looked up at the girl who had blatched her. She got up from the ground, brushing off the dirt from her sweatpants. And these were her grey ones too, Merlin! She tried to dust off most of the dirt but there would be a slight stain on them at least, and she would have to wait until she was back in their dorm to wash it off.
She saw people flying ahead and she cheered for her team, “Go Vera! Go Mamori!” She frowned as she looked at the second racer. She had seen him somewhere. A shipwreck flashed in front of her eyes, but it was too quick for her to make sense of. She decided she would ask him later, after the race ended. Hopefully both of them would be in a good enough physical state to talk. She huffed slightly, what was she to do now? There wasn’t much you could do in a broom racing sport while not on a broom.

Her fingers crossed, hoping everything would go smoothly as they had planned out. Though she had never dipped her toes into broom racing, everything about it right now still made her feel excited. She was ready.
Lucille and Avery had done the ally-oops, and it helped Lucille soar to the front. Rosaline flew behind her roommate. Seeing the narrow passage in front of her, she held her wand high and cast Lumos. She enunciated it right. The wand vibrated and started to glow. The spell was successful! There weren’t many chances to let her cast a spell other than in class, so it was quite a good one for her.
In the end, she stopped at unit 1, not far from the start line. Yet it was already a great result to see Lucille just fly forward. As she showed the smile, she realized at the same time, there were three people who had been KOB. Her eyes widened. She wasn’t sure when or how all this happened. The match was moving too fast. She could only hope her teammate was fine and could return to her broom safely.

Zephyr had not done anything yet from where he's located when the mess erupted around him. One moment he was trying to hold his broom while trying to listen to Vera’s instructions, and the next, someone’s voice echoed across the field that three racers were already off their brooms! What?! His balanced shook slightly upon hearing that. Already?! He had not moved and cleared the starting area yet but his heart was beating wildly in his chest now. This was how he imagined broom racing would go. But then, Vera shouted the cue, and he forced himself to go back to the task at hand and tried to focus on what he's expected to do. “I can do this.” He held the school broom tightly in his hand and angled himself toward Violence, who was ready to move. The plan was simple, give her a bit of momentum from the get go. He flew just enough to match her height, please don’t drop her, please don’t drop her, he chanted internally and managed to hook his arm securely so she could push off. “Ready?” With a determined look, he moved forward and alley ooped his teammate to give her a head start. She shot forward while his broom moved sharply leaving him shaking dangerously to regain his balance. Slow down, slow down, remember the goal... He reminded himself.
When the dust was cleared, Mamori, Verity, and Lucille were already past the trees. Good news was, he didn't drop Violence. What he didn't expect was for the race to turn into chaotic incident within the first few seconds. One moment he pushed Violence forward with more confidence than he could muster, the next moment, she was on the ground. Not only her, so was Aodhan. His eyes turned wider as the blatches collided midair, bodies flying, brooms spinning, dust rising from the ground. You can hear voices overhead, the commentary combined with the whistles of wind behind the racers who managed to get away all seemed chaotic for him. “This is insane…” He whispered under his breath, his pulse racing wildly. Realizing he should feel terrified but that's not what's happening to him, something warm settled into his chest instead. They can still catch up.... right?

Despite nodding and agreeing to @Aodhan Shaw request for ruthless competition against his quid teammates, Mamori prides himself on being a mature second year who understands delayed gratification. Timing is everything, better to follow half of that wallflower agenda before unleashing chaos; violence without strategy is for first years who still think punching things solves problems.
As soon as the starting signal blared Mamori took off like someone had set his broom on fire, yet his temporary peace offering was clearly one-sided, as a tiny redhead launched a premeditated assault on him before he even cleared Unit 1. The place behind him looked like a complete riot, which meant that the other team also didn't seem to lack in their violent inclinations just like his own teammates. Perfectly reasonable, this is exactly what happens if you do not penalize blatching in a game where crashing into others is somehow more advantageous than the actual racing. Broom racing makes Quidditch look positively gentle in comparison.
And apparently, the opposing team has an actual name instead of just being Team 2, a fact Mamori only registers when Matilde shouts it across the field. But the pink-haired badger is so fucking uneducated in herbology he doesn't even comprehend what "something rams" is supposed to mean beyond the obvious sheep implications. Upon noticing @Verity Engels had safely made it to the same unit, he responds to her inquiry with "I'm fine, still breathing. Could probably take seven or eight more hits like that, I'm pretty sturdy." Pure speculation of course, his only genuine benchmark is that a Bludger can knock him out and so can a first-year's punch which by transitive property would mean a first-year hits as hard as a Bludger… actually that train of thought makes no sense whatsoever and not related to broom racing at all. Returning his attention to the matter at hand, Mamori turns to Verity "Hey Captain" — mentally confirming his decision to just start addressing her as such — "do we have a team name? Could we be something simple and intimidating instead of those obscure dictionary words that no one understands?"xx ─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

For better or worse, the race was on. Lucille felt a rush as everyone sped off, the wind combining to form a flurry in which she could no longer hear the words of the host. Matilde, she thought her name was. Avery ally-ooped her forward, an unexpected movement, but she assumed the Quidditch player must know what she was doing. And, besides, Lucille had seen this happen before, even if she hadn't experienced it. She tightened her grip on the broom, her ankles crossing as if she thought it might fly out from underneath her, and leaned forward as she focused her eyes on the first obstacle. She knew that casting spells was a common practice in broom racing but, right now, Lucille was focused on getting away from the throng of people as best she could. All she needed right now was speed, and it seemed she was getting it. From behind her, she could hear a few shouts, maybe some crashing noises as it seemed someone fell? That was of no concern for her; she had to get through the narrow passageway up ahead. Although she brushed the side of it, still managing the new broom beneath her, she exited the passageway still on her broom, which she knew was more than what could be said for some other competitiors. The next obstacle was some trees, and it seemed her dodging skills were beginning to improve. Lucille passed it unscathed, a look of pride upon her face as she whizzed past their opponents, heading for another passageway. However, it seemed passageways themselves weren't exactly her strong suit with, once again, her leg scraping the side, even as she ducked and tucked her feet in, trying to make herself as small as possible. Despite the setback, she made it out and, now somehow alone, risked a glance behind her. She was in the lead, although barely, with two of their competitors close behind. Still, she couldn't believe it, until Matilde confirmed it in her announcement. Lucille beamed, but she couldn't get too comfortable too quickly. No, this was just the start of what was set to be a tumultuous, adventurous, and, hopefully, triumphant race. | ![]() ![]() |

At this point, every racer had made it into the track except for one. "Alright there?" Matilde asked the first year kindly. She wasn't sure if he was acting the maggot fooling around or if something was wrong. "It's not too late to catch up!"
She turned her attention to the racers further down the track. "The trees strike again." Matilde cringed as racer after racer crashed into them. They tended to be luckier with the passageways, some emerging unscathed and others rather bruised. "Verity pulls ahead of the group, and yuck! Poor girl, I doubt she can see too well through that."

The Deep End

It felt good to clap—to laugh—in a sport for once. For all the impacts of Maisie's fall, Lucille had still managed to skirt up ahead. And that brought her a joy she'd never experienced on the piste before: seeing someone else shine.
But as the seconds passed, she realized she needed to figure out what to do from all the way back here. Her hand reached and hovered over the top of the broomshaft, as her fingers extended to curl around it. But as she looked up and out towards the course...
No.
Definitely not. There was a bigger threat and a better option. Except...her eyes lingered on her wand—that awful, temperamental thing that caught sofas on fire and refused to give her information while simultaneously saving her life in a cloud of fog. Why put any trust in something as dubious as that?
But things were moving quickly and she didn't know if she could catch up. But if her Aspen wand would cooperate, she could slow things down. Suddenly, she recalled the way Alyss's broom had sailed evenly through the air that day over the viaduct. Narrowing her eyes, she spied a target: the most precious item to a duellist like Verity who flying fast. "Accio wand," she cast with a sliver of hope.
Inhaling, she closed her eyes and awaited the failure.
But she opened them to zip and thud of a duellist's wand on the ground.
A duellist disarmed...again.
