OCCUPIED IC Professor of Potions Office

Sigh.

The Professor listened to the student. Part of him was proud that the student could remember the basic rules of the Potions class. The other part questioned the student's way of thinking. The Professor thought about how he should address this, not only to point out the student's trouble, but also to give her an understanding.

The mechanical clock is ticking. Every silence between their conversation gave both of them, the Professor and the Student, a space to think and to reflect on what they had said and were going to say.

The Professor broke the silence. "In your opinion, what does 'respecting potions' mean?"

Yes. The basics.

The Professor chose to start there. Too often, reckless actions began with a simple misunderstanding. A student ignored a rule because they did not understand its purpose. A potioneer skipped a step because they thought it was unimportant. Potions sometimes did not care about intentions. Small mistakes built upon one another, sometimes leading to consequences far worse than anyone expected.

Death was no exception. Even experienced potioneers were not immune to it.

"Miss Cuthburt," his voice was low and calm. There was no judgment in his tone, or at least, he tried not to sound judgmental. "Do you think throwing random ingredients into someone else's potion shows it any respect?"

He didn't shift his gaze even for a moment. It was sharp, but without any intention to harm. He didn't have that kind of intention at all.

He still kept his promise, to protect the students, to protect the students from anything, including the consequences of ignorance, no matter how small the misunderstanding seemed.

Olivia mentally groaned at the questions he had asked, he clearly wanted her to reflect on her actions and she was in no mood to think. She slumped slightly in her chair, she felt as though he was taking it a bit too seriously.

She thought about respect, she was always taught how to respect others especially those in her social circle. But objects, why would they need respect? she never understood that concept, they weren't living things. She had been taught how to look after her things, was that respect?

Respecting potions she repeated in her head, "Honestly professor I have no idea," she answered honestly, "I would probably interpret respecting a potion as not misusing the potion or wasting it," she added a little unsure. She paused trying to read Professer Lesmana's face to figure out if she was on the right tracks, "But with that in mind, throwing harmless ingredients into others is not disrespecting the potion," she stated, "It can simply be classed as experimenting," she said cheekily a small smirk forming on her face.

She knew she was pushing her luck, but she thought if he knew she meant no harm and was simply having fun by creating a bit of chaos he may not be as dissapointed in her actions.

He found the core problem. The understanding. Listening was the skill he developed greatly over time, especially after he worked in this school. Being a foreigner forced her to be more aware and careful with everything he did, especially when it was related to some cultures and customs. And when it came to facing the problems from the students, one thing he kept in mind: Different students, different approach. To get to know which approach he should take, he must listen to them first.

"Well, you're also correct with that," the Professor nodded in agreement and restated, "We are better not to misuse the potion or waste it." His gaze softened. "And is that what you think about experimenting, Miss Cuthburt?"

His shoulder became relaxed. "Experiment doesn't work as randomly or as simply as that. Potioneer worked on their experiment with preparation. They study the ingredients, every theory about potioneering, calculating them, and set their workshop as safe as possible, including the personal protective equipment. That is also part of how we should respect the potions."

The Professor shook his head. "Let me tell you this, Miss Cuthburt," the Professor said. "It isn't rare for potioneers to face disaster in their experiment, even though they have prepared everything beforehand." He stopped. His gaze went back to the student's, trying to emphasise the seriousness of her action. "We're lucky, nothing bad happened to our class earlier."

"Pranks and banter are okay in Potions class. I understand how the class can become tense or boring sometimes. I used to be a student too," The Professor smiled softly. "However, we should do it mindfully. Please avoid playing with potions or their ingredients so we can prevent any disaster that could happen in class. And don't forget that I grade all of your work. You don't want your friends to sabotage your potion, do you?"

Lesmana thought it was enough. He didn't like it when an adult nagged him for too long. The student before him might feel the same. "So what do you think, Miss Cuthburt?" He opened a jar of biscuits and held it out to her, waiting for both her response to the questions and expecting her to take some of the biscuits.
