River could feel the loneliness emanating off of Emily's downtrodden features, shoulders slumped with a distinct sadness. "I can only imagine how terrible that must be," she said, a small frown marring her pale face, "My father often has to stay away from home due to his duties as an auror, but I cannot imagine what it would feel like if I wasn't able to see him for such long periods of time. Even now, we exchange letters every weekend, informing the other of what has been going on in our lives. I'll probably be mentioning the two of you in my next letter." River attempted to improve the sullen atmosphere around the library table. "How is your Auntie at least? She sounds like a very kind woman," River hoped the thought of her pseudo-family member would improve Emily's current mood. The Hufflepuff girl sat silently in her chair, eyes darting to look everywhere but at the two Slytherins around her.

She did not enjoy seeing the sad look in her eyes and a feeling of uselessness engulfed the Norse girl. She mentally paged through every book, rewatched every memory, listened for every one of her mother's pieces of advice, searching for something else she could say or do that would help her friend. None of it felt right though, not quite hitting the mark of what she wished to say.

River glanced over at Violet, hoping she would have better luck in comforting the brown-haired girl.

Violet calmly listened to the two girls talking, it was clear to hear they all had been and continued to be through a lot of complex things, even at such a young age. Violet had always been the one to try to find a silver lining, and being an only child, she had gotten used to getting herself through anything and everything - bonding like this over lifes less desirable things was so very new for her. Of course she had friends in the muggle world that knew what her life was like (except for the part about her and her mum being witches of course) but they just knew because their parents told them, Violet never had to.

Listening to Emily's story and seeing her shoulders shrink, Violet felt immense sympathy for her. Even though Violet's parents always made sure to make her feel loved and cared for, they could lose themselves in some periods in their grief over Isaac. They would physically be there, accompanying her to all her activities, movie nights, family trips and such - but they weren't there mentally. Instead they were taking in all the things they were doing in a sense of ''what we don't get to do with Isaac'' rather than ''what we get to do with Violet''. So, in some ways, she felt she could understand what Emily was saying - but at the same time not as Emily's situation was much tougher than hers.

''That must be really hard for you, Emily. I'm thankful for your Auntie, though. Even if it is not the same thing as your actual parents, I'm thankful you have at least someone near you when you need it.'' Violet said, offering Emily a comforting smile. ''And, hey, now you have us two as well!''she continued, nodding with a hint of stubbornness in regards to making Emily feel better.

Emily was touched by River and Violet's encouraging words. She thought for sure they would think she was trying to pull their leg or mock her for seemingly being so pretentious. But instead, they were all sharing an acknowledging sense of comfort for one another and Emily was happy that she could contribute to that feeling.
But what almost got Emily emotional was the support the two girls were vocally willing to give her. She beamed back at them, reciprocating the same gesture with a thankful nod.

"I'm glad to have new friends like you two," she said proudly. "And you can count on me as well to always be there for you too...!"

And with the inclusion of "Auntie" in the discussion made Emily more grateful. She had more to thank her for than both her fingers and toes could count. With Violet's interest piqued on the woman, Emily sat up, almost as if she was suddenly reinvigorated with energy.

"Man, Auntie is just... amazing" Emily had a plethora of words to better describe her but struggled to come out of her mouth all at once, but at the same time, nothing could possibly describe just how truly amazing the maid was.

"Thanks to Auntie, I feel like my own person. My parents are built on standards, as you can probably guess. Very much like what the movies portray anyway, heh. But even before Auntie came to work for us, I never wanted to be like my folks. My mother chose looks, I chose books. Father wanted money, but I wanted friends. I was the self-named black sheep of the family, and Auntie never liked working for people that were full of themselves either."

Emily sat back in her chair, staring at one of her library books wistfully, tracing the hardback lining as she spoke. "Auntie is so relaxed and kind. She's strict but fair, patient but headstrong too. She's taught me a lot over the years. I'd probably still be the silent, shy little sprite if not for her. Heh, well... I am still a little shy these days, but I'll always be thankful for her teaching me how to be myself. A girl."

She took a breath before she carried on with her tangent. It felt good to talk so freely about these things with the other girls. She redid her hair when her ribbon began to loosen, still thinking of "Auntie" as she wrapped it back into a ponytail.

River smiled as Emily spoke of her "Auntie", a smile once again lighting up her face. She so clearly loved her maid that River could feel her heart swell in empathy. Although one thing that Emily said was still confusing her.

"What is a 'movie'? Is that a new type of book? I don't believe I've heard of it before, and I don't remember reading one or anything about them." The foreign word was awkward on her tongue, and she felt just a little stupid at her ignorance. Perhaps it is a muggle thing? They can be quite inventive from what Mother would say, having ventured into Muggle cities a few times to satisfy her curiosity about the magicless people.

I really hope they don't laugh at me, she thought dejectedly, already chastising herself for voicing her curiosity. Way to go and make it obvious that you know nothing about normal things, River. You should know what in Helheim a movie is by now, you are 11, you are in Hogwarts!

She ducked her head, long black locks covering her red cheeks. The blush made her face feel as if it were on fire as embarrassment coursed through her veins. River never liked being ignorant of something, it always made her feel stupid. So whenever she encountered something she was not familiar with, she would ask her parents or tutors to explain it. If they were unable to, she she would request a book on the subject instead.

Sorry it's taken a while to respond! But I'm back!

Emily tilted her head slightly at River's question before she even fathomed the notion that she wasn't Muggle-born like herself. She had to keep reminding herself that the Wizarding World wasn't like back home. Rather than mock her for it - not that she would ever do such a thing anyway - Emily flashed another cheesy grin before she carried on.

"Oh! They're kind of like books, except you watch them on a digital screen! They're moving pictures that you can watch on televisions and in cinemas. We have lots of them back where I'm from. They're a good form of escapism." She smiled before her eyes darted to her pile of books.

"Hehe, well it's one way to escape anyways, but I've always found myself reading books and writing rather than watching television. Either that or I'm outside." She shuffled her chair a little more inwards so she could rest her elbows a little more on the table as she continued to converse with the two girls.

"This might sound bizarre coming from a Muggle myself, but I actually quite like how... traditional things are done here. Writing letters, no screens, no technology really... It feels kind of nice. A nice change of pace compared to a society that seems to live off such things like it's their lifeline."

Emily often found herself growing bitter against the use of phones and the like. People were too glued to the fabricated digital world that they were missing all of this right in front of their very eyes. Being one of very few people to go against social media back home, it made Emily wonder if this could be one of the reasons she found herself admitted to Hogwarts, aside from the magical talent she appeared to inherit.
