Pool Party

Although she enjoyed the water, and enjoyed watching children have fun, she was unsure how long she could stay in the direct sunlight. She wore a floor length skirt, blueish green with gold embellishments. She also wore a blueish tank top, fitting the theme, but she still needed to protect her shoulders and arms, and so she carried a thick golden scarf around her body like a blanket. Her hair was worn down and attempting to block her neck from the sun, but to help she wore a large hat, wicker so it fit the theme, with a golden band around it. Large sunglasses that hid her, probably, bloodshot eyes, as well as a good portion of her cheeks. She just prayed the hat was large enough to successfully protect her face. She was sitting in a lawn chair, in a relatively shaded ares of the shore, watching the children find her orbs. She was having a good time, but the sun was making her tired and a bit woozy.
That is why, when warm young student came up to her and offered so play some ball, she got a bit nervous. She wasn't the best at the game, she could serve rather well, but beyond that she was horrible. But also she did not feel like moving around that much and she knew she would have to take off her scarf, and probably her hat, in order to play. She really should say no, but the girl looked so sweet. Instead she smiled and agreed, "I would love to!" She exclaimed and rose to walk over to the court with the girl.
The pair almost made it over the the court, and Adelaide was grimacing at the thought of having to take her hat and scarf off. It wouldn't hurt directly, not instantly, but it would not feel good and it would, sooner or later, start to burn quite a bit. Thankfully another sweet young girl interrupted the pair. She recognized this one as getting the Water Gun ability just minutes ago. Adelaide wondered why she was out of the pool, instead of playing with her new ability. Adelaide hoped she liked it...
But either way she did not dwell on that thought long, because this girl was her savor. "Well, the game cannot be played with an uneven number! But that is fine, you two go ahead and play, I will watch!" Yes, she will watch the two students play. It was a very physical game, the girls would get tired, their blood rushing with adrenaline... Adelaide stopped herself. The sun was making her hungry, that was dangerous. "Actually, you two go play and when you are tired, you can come get some food! I think it is about time someone started grilling, don't you?" She grinned, her teeth tingling. She needed a hamburger, fast.
With that she turned, her hat ans scarf thankfully still in place, and walked over to the grill that had been set up. It was not far some the court, and she would actually get to watch the girls play the game. She quickly lighted up the grill with a quick spell and opened the nearby cooler, grabbing a handful of raw burgers and hot dogs. Peeling one burger open, she began picking little fingerfulls of the meat, stuffing it into her mouth, carefully and sneakily, making sure no one would notice more than her simply grilling food for the campers. It was not even close to the real thing, but she managed to convince herself the raw meat was enough.

There was another student, fresh from the lake, who seemed to be sick of the water already. Instead of speaking, however, the girl made some motions with her hands. Ami stared at girl's movements, eyes wide. "You're deaf? Oh frick..." Her heart began to beat uncontrollably, so close to completely beating out of her chest entirely.Interactions: Kalani Anderson
Deaf people weren't uncommon, especially in cities as big as Chicago and London... and yet, somehow, by some strange, odd miracle, Ami had never met someone like that before. However, she had read El Deafo only about a million times, so she had, you know, a general idea of how to act.
Still, it wasn't any less nerve-wracking. Her oh-my-god-I'm-freaking-out levels soared when Professor Ayers ditched her to go cook food for the rest of the students. Rude! Abandoning a scrawny first-almost-second year to go contribute to the greater good by cooking food for everyone? Absolutely evil, being a nice, selfless person and cooking for a bunch of ravenous pre-teens.
"I'm Ami," she said with a small, nervous smile, turning back to the Gryffindor. Spotting the glistening bracelets on her wrists- 'I AM DEAF' with a particularly noticeable one, Ami was glad she had at least gotten that right. 'KALANI ANDERSON' would have to be her name- and it was quite a pretty one, indeed.
Above that bracelet was 'GRYFFINDOR'- oh, crap. Ami's voice and breath got caught in her throat, and she took a step backward instinctively. Not all Gryffindors are awful. Calm down. She's not going to hurt you. Taking a shaky breath, Ami scanned the other bracelets quickly, without paying too much attention to them- the Gryffindor one had taken up all of her panic-space.
"Let's play!" she chirped, and anyone who had even a single brain cell could tell that it was forced. Her face looked like she was dying, or she sucked on a lemon- or both. Walking over quickly to the court, Ami waited until Kalani had taken a position, before tossing the ball up in the air for an overhead serve.
Natural, athletic instinct began to kick in as the ball soared through the air. Without having to think too much about it, Ami dropped her right shoulder, then whipped her hand through the air to strike at the ball.
Result: 30.78
Roll: 19
To her great surprise, she actually didn't completely fail. The ball soared over the net, headed directly at Kalani with a slightly terrifying amount of speed.
Game on, Gryffindor, game on.

So, Kalani and I came up with our rolling/scoring system over DMs, and here's what we came up with:
x > 15 = strong success
15 > x > 5 = weak hit
5 > x = other person gets a point
In order to calculate x, we roll a 20 sided die. Say, for example, we get 10. We would then multiply it by 0.5 our agility stats- for instance, Ami has 4 agility, so 10 x 1.2 = 12, then multiply that by 0.5 of our accuracy, so 12 x 1.35 = 16.2. Thus, she would have a strong success.
Kalani has a special case, because she has the water gun ability. If she chooses to use the ability, she'd take her DR x 1/2 AGI x 1/2 ACC + 2 to get her total. So, if she rolled a 7, it would look like this:
7 x 1.4 x 1.25 + 2 = 15.25
If you roll a weak hit, the next round, the other person only has to surpass 10 points in order to gain a strong success, instead of 15.

When the professor gave up her position in volleyball, Kalani couldn't help but feel like she'd stolen the space right from under her feet. She lifted her hands to try and convince Professor Ayers to stay, because they could very easily find her a place if they just picked one of them that could switch out sometimes, but the pale woman moved away from them and towards the grill very quickly. It was only as she was walking away that she realised how strangely the woman was dressed for the weather. Sure, it wasn't roasting, but Kalani was fine in her swimsuit, maybe a little chilly because she was still wet. But the woman was basically covered head to toe. She must have been dying to the heat! Kalani pouted a little at the back of the woman, making sure that she'd wiped her face by the time she'd turned to look at the other girl.
The first thing Kalani noticed was that she was so much taller than her. The girl was almost a whole foot taller, and Kalani had to crane her neck up to meet the girl's dark brown eyes. She beamed up at the girl, the sun glinting off dark ginger hair, and raised her left arm for the sake of her bracelets. But the girl had already noticed them - that was a first. She just barely caught the girl's name, though. Had she missed a 'b' shape, making the girl Abby? No, the girls lips had come away too soft for there to be a b - it had to be an m. Amy, then? No, her lips hadn't stretched out far enough to make the 'ay' sound. It was an 'ah', like 'Tammy'. This wasn't the first time she'd found someone with a funny name in Hogwarts. All that fit was 'ah-me'. Ami.
In the time that it'd taken Kalani to figure out what the girl's name was, she'd taken a step back that Kalani didn't even register. 'Let's play!' was easy to read, and Kalani went to nod enthusiastically when she noticed the girl's face. She looked like she definitely didn't want to play. Kalani raised her hands to try and figure out what was the matter, but the girl had already turned around and was practically speed walking over to the court. Kalani sighed, but was quickly taken over by the excitement and jogged to the opposite side of the net.
Kalani had played volleyball a bit before. Usually, it was in a situation a lot like this one; a pool party at a summer camp. It wasn't one of her main sports, but she was alright at it. She took a position at the middle of her section, trusting that she was a fast enough runner to go wherever she needed to. She bent her knees, ready to fling herself if she needed to.
Ami was a lot better than she'd let on. The ball was quick, but Kalani was quicker. She bent into a slight crouch and hit the ball upwards and over the net. It wasn't as fast as Ami's had been, but it was over the net and was still travelling fast, towards Ami's left.

Amadea swam down toward the plants, immediately spotting the purple glow of what she assumed was an orb. As she got closer, the blurred outline became slightly more visible (though of course it was still quite blurry considering she was underwater). She leaned forward and grasped the object between her fingers. As she did this, she felt some force pushing her back. Confused, she wondered what had happened, but did not have much time to ponder this as she was quickly running out of breath. Pushing off of the bottom of the lake, she burst to the surface, gasping for a breath and shoving her hair out of her face. Maybe she could figure out what was happening from the surface of the water.INTERACTION: Midas Jones
Treading water to stay above the surface, Amadea thought. The force had happened just as she had touchd the orb, so maybe it had something to do with that. Looking down at her hands, she realized the water around them was forming small miniature waves. It was almost like she was creating them. After looking around to confirm that the waves were solely coming from her, she realized it must have been the orb. She felt strangely powerful, being able to make waves do her bidding. Maybe she was secretly the daughter of Poseidon, and was discovering her true self right now. She shook her head and smiled at her fantasy; while it was fun to daydream, it obviously wasn't reality. Still, she was satisfied that she had found an orb and gained a special power. Amadea was now determined to use this power. Waving her hand to create a wave, she pushed herself toward some of the other students in the water who seemed to be looking for orbs as well.
She spotted only one familiar face, the one of Midas Jones, who Amadea knew very little about. She might have had a vague memory of seeing him somewhere around the castle, and he was in the same cabin as she was for summer camp, but she really knew little about him. Perfect opportunity to get to know him better, she thought. When she was in close vicinity to him, she moved her arm and sent a small wave to go splash him to get his attention. "Hi Midas!" she said with a smile, wondering if he had already determined that she acquired a special water-controlling ability thanks to the orb. If not, this would be fun.

This wasn't fair. Of course, the other girl had to be ridiculously athletic or whatever, even with Ami's major height advantage. She had hit the ball back at her almost effortlessly, like she played volleyball on the beach every day, or something. It just wasn't fair, some people got all of the athleticism- and all of the good looks like god look at that hair.Interactions: Kalani Anderson
Enough with the mental complaining- the ball was coming back at her, thanks to a smooth hit from Kalani. "Nice hit!" she called out, even if she wasn't sure that Kalani would be watching her lips. Ami watched it soar over the net with slightly wide eyes, and while she wasn't too aware of it, her feet seemed to know exactly what to do. Launching her across the court, Ami was able to get her arms underneath the ball and bump it back over the net.
Result: 27.54
Roll: 17
Score! It certainly wasn't as good as her serve, a little bit weaker, but it was still a solid hit that made it over the net. A sweet arc, one that had the beautiful shape of a perfect rainbow, aimed at Kalani's right side. Not... precisely where she wanted it to go, but it was close enough. At least... at least it had gotten over the net, right?

Midas tried to push the water. He couldn't go underwater! He was kneeling on the water... It was a weird feeling... Like he was on a huge glass floor. He could see pretty far down into the lake, but it still felt like he was on ice or something, and that if he made any sudden movements, it would crack and he would fall down. He slowly tried to stand, as if he would fall into the water if he moved too fast.Interacts with: Amadea Campbell

"How is this possible???" Midas thought to himself. His hand and shoes had water on them, but he was still on top of the water. "Does this mean I can't go underwater? What if I dropped something? What if I need to go underwater?" Upon thinking about this, he dropped underwater. Taken by surprise, Midas began trying to swim to the top. He reached the top and again tried to stay on top of the water, rather than go underwater.
He coughed up water and turned over onto his stomach. "Never... never again." He began to try and stand up again, and got up on his knees when he heard "Hi Midas!" He turned around to face whoever said his name when something rolled under his feet. He tripped over the thing that rolled under his feet and smashed into the water with the side of his head. However, the water did NOT cushion his fall, and Midas felt his cheek began to bleed. He looked up, and saw a girl - she was in the Unicorn Cabin or something - and her name was... Amadea! She voted for him in the Werewolf game as well! "H-hi! Can I help you with something?" Midas stuttered out.

Kalani didn't know what she'd been expecting. She'd already learned from her time at the playground that the Brits were a lot better at sports than they let on. Even if they raised eyebrows and shook their heads at the idea of actually playing soccer, when they actually got the ball by their feet they could shoot like hell. It was the same with basketball, which she'd learned the hard way with scraped knees and palms. Ami had already surprised her with her serve, but it clearly wasn't a lucky hit; she must've been a sportswoman!
If the hit hadn't been so good, she might have spotted what Ami had shouted to her. But she was focused on another thing. As the ball soared over the net, Kalani could see where it would fall. She took a few quick leaping steps back, lunged to the right, and battered the ball the best she could. There was more distance between herself and the net than she was comfortable with, and the hit wasn't that good either. Still, the ball slipped over the net like a dolphin in the water. If Ami did nothing, it would land just an inch over the net, quite sharply to her left and the edge of the court.

Pool Party
Ah today is such a beautiful day. The sun's out, food's a plenty, activities are fun, and i even see a few familiar faces. The lean and somewhat lanky preteen had woken up extra early on this larticular day. After all today was the day of the pool party. He had seen fliers all across hogwarts for it. He always loved the water, and nature in general. There was so much to still be learned from it. Water is such a funny thing after all.
Or this is at least what quinn himself thinks. Perhaps I should save these thoughts for later the sun is baking me already. He sighed looking at the water longingly. It's ironic isn't it, for someone who has such a love of the water to have such a crippling fear of it. Though to be fair he wasn't alway afraid of it. But that's a story for another time.
His eyes scanned the area observing his surroundings carefully. He could go for food first. He was always down for some good grub. Perhaps they have donuts? Oh he so hoped he did. He could devour an entire box or two of those delicious little pastries by himself. Just the thought of it made his mouth water uncontrollably.
Quickly Quinn mentally smacked himself to snap his thoughts from lingering yet again. His eyes kept scanning falling on to the volleyball court where two girl's were playing. Luckily for him he recognized one of them as Ami a fellow hufflepuff like himself. Immediately recognizing a familiar face he rushed over stopping just short of the court right by who he recognized as one of the professors. "Ami hey! This looks quite fun, may I perhaps join in on this?"
Chipper as ever, though he said it a bit too quickly making him sound over eager. A habit he would have to change sometime. He just hoped he wouldn't make a fool of himself like usual, or worse ramble insistently, or even worse mumble his thoughts outloud. A new troublesome habit that was becoming increasingly harder to break. Darn his analytical nature, and enthusiam for the pursuit of knowledge.
While stuck in his thoughts yet again the young, quirky red head began to mumble them outloud in a bit of a nervous manner. Just loud enough for anyone close to him to hear. Though he didn't notice of course as he was still waiting for a response. The sun shined down on him highlighting his already reddish orange hair that now gave the appearance of being fiery thanks to the light of the morning sun. His freckles were definitely more pronounced as well being highlighted by the sunlight as well. Though he didn't mind it. He loved the sun and how it felt on his skin. It was like the warmth was hugging him reminding him of his Maimeo's hugs.

Was there something she was missing, here? Something someone wasn’t telling her? Because Kalani seemed like a fricking pro at this game, not a kid just playing for fun. Her hit had gone way off to the side, where it was nearly impossible to reach. A smart tactic, one honestly found more commonly in tennis, rather than volleyball.
It worked, though, and Ami really had to hustle her bustle in order to even get anywhere close to the ball. Stretching her arms out as far as they could go, Ami barely managed to get under the ball in order to send it soaring over the net- nothing sharp or offensive, just a defensive shot so that she wouldn't lose the point.
Result: 9.72
Roll: 6
Hearing her name, Ami whipped her head around to look for the source of the voice. The only one near was a redheaded boy, he looked really familiar- oh, Quinn! "Hey, Quinn... yeah, uh, join in whenever I guess- holy frick," Ami yelped, lunging forward to return Kalani's incoming hit. Wow, multitasking really was getting harder and harder. "Join in if you'd like!" Ami yelled back at Quinn, hoping that he'd smoothly integrate into the game without the two girls having to stop completely.

Amadea watched as the Ravenclaw turned around, startled, trying to figure out who had said his name. Amadea winced as she watched him attempt to turn just as her wave reached him, causing him to fall over into the water. "Are you okay?" she exclaimed loudly, noticing that he had cut his cheek and it was now bleeding. She tried to hide her wince of pain, not because she was injured, but because he was. Amadea felt horrible; she was only trying to have some fun, but clearly she couldn't succeed in that without causing someone to bleed. Just her luck, of course.
"I'm really sorry about that," Amadea apologized, hoping that Midas wasn't angry with her. He was just an innocent person that Amadea had managed to hurt; just one more name to add to the list. "Sorry. I didn't know that wave would be so powerful. I won't do it again I promise." This time she sent a wave drifting in toward the shore, away from Midas and any other people.
"How are you doing?" Amadea asked him, hoping some small talk would lighten the mood.
