The computer malfunctioned and Iris was left with a horrible beeping sound. She tried to run away but her shoelace got stuck and she fell down, right into the path of guards. Again, Iris tried to run away, but one guard held her down as another aimed his gun and shot it.

Iris shut her computer, frustrated at the failure. She usually beat the games and puzzles easily, but this one was stumping her. As she zipped up her backpack, she stepped off her bus, sighing. School was always so boring. Why couldn’t she have some adventure in her life? She sighed as she walked to her first class, math. It was easy and also really boring.

As she sat down in her usual seat, the announcements came on. “Welcome everyone to another day at Hawking Middle. Eighth grade is having a football game, so come to it! See you next time, your principal.” Iris groaned. Being in Eighth grade was not fun.

Soon she was doing some math problems when the speaker came on again. She stopped, confused. Why would the principal tell them something again? It was a bit strange. “Um…professor? Why-” But she was cut off as the principal started to speak.

“Sorry for interrupting your time in class, but I have some hard news, a group of bad people are entering the school, so hi-” But she was cut off and a new voice came on.

“Hello everyone. I’m the “bad guy”. I’d like to say, we’ll be walking to each classroom to meet all of you, so have fun!” Then the speaker clicked off. Iris started to panic. When she had said she wanted excitement, she didn’t mean it like that! The teacher paled and turned to everyone.

“Get to the closet space. No one will see you there.” With that, she ran to the closet where papers were kept, and went to the corner of it, hiding. Iris shivered as her classmates ran in too, and wished she could be somewhere else. But she hid, even as the lights went off, and even when her teacher hid too. But then the locked door started to turn and she heard muffled voices arguing. Iris shoved herself deeper into the closet, hiding behind some jackets. Then she heard the lock click and someone was in her classroom. Iris started to hyperventilate. Then the closet door opened. Light flooded in and Iris saw a group of people staring at the closet. She tried to go even more back into the closet.

“Oh…I found them!” A male called back. Immediately more people came to the closet. “Now, don’t move and maybe no one will get hurt. Just answer my questions. Got it?” The class nodded, Iris with them. “Right. First one is this…what do you know about the codecracker?” Iris gasped. The class turned around and looked at her. I know that from….but….I cracked that ages ago…why are they asking about it? The man stalked closer to her. “Yes? What do you know about it?” Iris gulped.

“I-It’s just that um….so…I cracked that a while ago.” The man slapped her across the face. She screamed. “Ow…why?” Did you hit me? Her mind finished the sentence, not brave enough to say it out loud.

“You lied. I told you to answer my questions. You lied so you got hurt. Let’s try this again.” He pushed his face up to hers. “What do you know about the codecracker? I know it’s the greatest code ever made. So…” Iris paled.

“I…I’m telling you the truth sir.” She told him. “Please…” But the man only grew more angry. Instead of hitting her, he took out a cloth. Then he looked at the other people behind him.

“I’m sedating her. You guys restrain the others.” He growled. Iris whimpered and tried to get away, but the man held her down and shoved the cloth on her face. The world dimmed and grew fuzzy as the sedative started to work. She tried to stay awake, but soon the darkness overtook her and everything went black.

Iris woke up with a start. She was in a truck, but she was able to move freely. Her head still felt too fuzzy to move though. Well, life is more exciting now. She thought, annoyed at herself. She looked around where she was. The truck was…just a truck. A really normal and boring truck. Iris sighed. Then she decided to at least try to get out. Her head was starting to unfuzz, so she could think more clearly. She could see that the door was held shut by a lock. She slowly started to smile. This was just a puzzle she could solve. She was good at puzzles. She could pick the lock.

When she looked closer, the lock appeared to have a combination code. She smiled again. She was good with numbers as well. I don’t know what the code is….but I can try to find out. She became determined. “Right.” She whispered. “Start with a simple code. 4…5…10…nope.” She turned it, but it didn’t work. So she kept trying. “Great. 6…8…11…ooh…” It nearly clicked. She could tell. The next one was sure to work. “6…7…11…yes!” She whispered happily as the lock clicked open and the door opened. Her happiness faded when she saw the challenge ahead of her. The truck was moving very fast and she would definitely be hurt if she jumped off.

Now what? She started to think it was hopeless when the truck stopped near some soft trash bags. She steeled herself. 1…2..3..Go! She shouted at herself and jumped off the truck. It felt too long, but she managed to make it to the trash cans fine. Now she just had to get home.

Iris started by finding a landmark, her local grocery store. Then she started to walk home from there. While on the way home, she saw the truck, most likely looking for her. She hid until it was gone, then started walking again. Once she got home, she saw her mom frantically on the phone. “Honey!” She shouted when she saw Iris. “I found her! Thank goodness.” She put the phone away and looked at her. “I’m so relieved you got away. When I heard what happened..” She looked away.

“I think that the bad guys are going to hack into something.” She said to herself a little while later. “I need to stop them.” She whispered. So she climbed out her window and slipped into the silent street, ready to stop them.

When Iris found the hideout, hours had passed. But she eventually did, and saw people milling about and on computers, most likely trying to crack a code. “I figured it out!” One yelped. “And we can finally defeat the rulers of this world! We can hack them!” The figure shouted. The other people groaned.

“Sky. Really. You just gave away our plan to anyone who might be listening.” Someone told Sky. She blushed.

“No one’s going to be listening.” She argued back. Which was when Iris jumped out of hiding.

“I am!” She shouted. Everyone groaned now. One figure cursed.’

“Get her!” Sky shouted. Then she ran away. Iris sighed, but she had bigger things to do. She ran to a computer and trashed it. Then she dodged someone hitting her, and punched them in the gut and then the jaw. The figure dropped like a stone. Okay, this is intense and nothing like the game. I need to stop them and get out of here before I have to fight any more!

She ran to another computer and started hacking into it, looking at the files. Once she knew what they were doing in a bigger sense, she started to email the files to the president. It was the only thing she could think of. And she called the police. Right after she did that, a person ran up to her and she had to start fighting.

She started to duck and punch the people, trying to get away. She was only an average fighter, so it took a little while to escape. By the time she’d taken down three bad guys, the police had arrived. Iris breathed a sigh of relief. They were here and she could leave. The police asked her a few questions and then told her she was a hero. Iris smiled and blushed. “Thanks.” She whispered. She really was a hero, and had had a really hero-like day. But now she could go home and relax, happy and in peace.
