❝A true exercise in imagination had been explored as they all entered and got down to the task of building their rooms from thought alone. It had served its purpose on proffering a glimpse as to where their headspace was at, and I had gathered that some were far more adept than others in utilizing their imagination, while some simply did not get the chance to shine because of the burdensome amounts of wax in their ears. That or they simply did not know how to use their minds the way I had intended. No matter. This was to be a cabin of possibilities, and the possibilities were endless when one's mind became involved. The power to conjure things into being with but a thought was simply the greatest power given to the world, and use it we should.
They had not been the only ones to create something of their own, for the moment they had entered I had conjured my own example in the form of a room, the likes of which I now stood within and appraised for a spell. The delicate ambience of blue and silver that seemed to shimmer under the velvety glow of the moon's anticrepuscular rays that luminesced through the glass apertures, the likened curtains pulled and held asunder. The gentle lights cast a breathtaking view as they caught the crystalline structure of the chandelier hanging above the round table near the windows, creating an effect of modest iridescence as the glow became a spectacle of trance-like panorama. The walls and ceilings were stylized with unusual yet entrancing motifs of silver and gold, and the floor was carpeted with silken blue.
Lounge chairs and roundtables and an obvious work area to the side shared imagery to match the rest of the room, and the bed to the far edge in opposite was far grander and more extravagant than anything that one would ever be able to deem necessary. In essence, the room was the paradigm of simplicity and elegance, with a silent serenity that only one such as myself could ever manage to devise. If one entered my room, the minute they touch the carpet, they would find that they were sans their typical wares and donning literal velvet gloves of black and silver. Their clothes would instantly change into, for the ladies, an evening dress of choice boasting elegance and poise from somewhere deep within the recesses of their mind, and the gentlemen would be wearing suits of soft, acceptable colours with a simple black, white or grey dress shirt beneath. It would not do to have them looking like beasts if they so chose to enter.
I glided daintily over to one of the sealed windows, rising a glass and a wine bottle from the table along the way. I rested my tush on the sill as I poured from the decanter, drank from the glass and peered into the night sky, and if I could stand from a distance and view myself in the third person, what a sight of sophistication I would see. Comfortably poised, the natural colours of my clothes, hair, eyes, and even my skin shimmering coolly under the ministrations of reflected moonlight and decorous framework. Work, I had told them, that which I had every intention of completing before the night was through. But a moment's reprieve was warranted to assess the beauty that had been denied me for far too long since my confinement to the school.❞

Cabin of the Lethifold
Edric watched as the pretty blond boy introduced himself by sawing his name only, making no motion to take the hand offered to him. This was just the bare minimum of courtsey and he was both disappointed and miffed at the obvious dismissal of the other boy. Slytherins usually stuck together and looked out for their fellow housemates when they could, which was why his behavior surprised him that much. He'd wanted to help a fellow, and the guy had acted plain rude. Fine, Edric thought, deciding that the impolite boy wasn't any concern of his anymore - school was over, he didn't have any responsibility as a Prefect anymore to look out for that Lyonel bloke.
Instead he turned to to the girl who had approached them and was a lot more agreeable than the other first year. He'd seen her before in lessons and the Common Room but didn't really remember her name... something with an A. And her surname was Silver, maybe. He was saved from having to guess further when she introduced herself.
"Hey, Angela," he greeted, smiling at her. "Of course I remember you. I sat two seats away from you in Charms this year, I think... and thank you for the compliment. They are my friends, the Hippogriffs. I mean they are Hippogriffs from my family's herd. They really mean a lot to me."

Angela clearly saw Lyonel turning from Edric's outstretched hand. She didn't expect to suddenly get so irritated by this behavior. Seriously though, how hard is to be polite to others like a normal human being, especially when they want to help you? He offended Edric on purpose. She blushed in anger, looking at Lyonel's back. Who this guy freaking guy thinks he is?, she muttered, not entirely sure whether Edric heard that.
But as soon as Edric mentioned his Hippogriffs, she completely forgot about Lyonel and her face lightened up. No way, you guys have a Hippogriff herd?!, she gasped in excitement. That's amazing! We have an owlery, I've spent my entire childhood with owls... But the Hippogriffs are so much bigger, and you can even fly on them... Compared to them owls are like... like... She pulled out her wand and quickly imagined a miniature owl near one of the Hippogriffs on the ceiling. Like this tiny! The owl was comically looking around and jumping helplessly, like it was scared of being trampled by the majestic creatures next to it. Angela laughed and with a wave of a wand made it disappear - she didn't want to permanently invade Edric's space.
Wow, Edric. If I were you, I would spend my entire summer with them. Now she wanted to know everything about his Hipppogriffs and didn't even know what questions to ask first. Are they nice? Do you have some favorite ones? How do you tame them? Do you fly on them often?

Elora grinned. "Yup, I'm Elora. It's nice to meet you, Rosie! A pillow fort would be really cool. Almost like a tini ment, er- mini tent." She said excitedly. "It shouldn't be too hard- We'd just need a lot of blankets and things to stabilize it...But it's up to you. Whatever you think would be best." Elora finished.
Although, she was a little nervous. Would the Professor be mad? After all, he had said they couldn't conjure their own spaces and seemed pretty strict. However, it was kind of unfair to ban them from having their own place to sleep. Besides, they're not conjuring a room, they're making one. But how would they get blankets if they made a fort? Would she get in trouble for helping Rosie?
Elora banished these thoughts from her mind.
Nope.
If you do get in trouble, what's the worst that could happen? And she's doing this for a friend. It would be rude if she suddenly just refused to help her.
This would be exciting. Yes. Exciting.
Elora moved forward to the edge of her bed. "Do you want to get settled in first? You can put your stuff in the trunk over there, it's still pretty empty and I don't really need it."

Such fun! The good professor had taken it upon himself to teach them the power they held within their very minds. Magic was what the wizarding community called the ability to channel one's thoughts into reality to effect change. Metamorphosis. Those who had the potential to utilize this magic were dubbed witch, wizard, or warlock. What is the professor's intention? Why had he made such a point of reminding them time and again of that phrase? He is a smart man, doing nothing but that which is believed to have some significance. It was up to them to dissect his words and understand their meaning. Before it was too late...
9:58 PM on the dot found the students mostly mingling with one another. Some remained silent and reclusive while others stepped away from their comfort zones and made contact with the other aliens...strangers in the room. When you're a child, nothing is scarier than building up the courage to talk to another child for the first time, especially if you believed the other child was prettier than you, smarter than you, more popular than you, richer than you, or just plain scary. [Edric] for one seemed to relish this newfound power over his mind and the wonders this tent held, summoning Butterwing's family to visit. How sweet they were. Oh! I appear to be sweating through my eyes... He tried making contact with another but found his advances spurned. Then there was little [Angela] with her contagious fascination with the Hippogriffs.
10:01 PM found [Lyonel] and [Rosie] still bedless and friendless. The poor things. They were in a place where none knew the other, and they seemed to handle the truth of this with less grace than the rest. Rosie, for one, seemed perfectly capable of adapting to the unknown, swallowing her shy pride and gathering the courage needed to find [Elora] and ask her to share her space. Elora, bless her pure heart, played her part in reassuring Rosie that she would not be sleeping on the floor tonight. Such a wonderful child. While Rosie made a possible new friend, Lyonel made no progress. In fact, his curt dismissal of Edric might have cost him a bed and a potential friend. All was not lost, however, as he had found his way to an empty area near [Celynne]'s room and stole some of her light to read.
10:11PM. Celynne, for her part, seemed to be a welcoming, though slightly annoyed, host. She was conflicted, clearly, but offered her loft for Lyonel's use. At least for the night or until she felt like reading in earnest. He had better take what he can get, for better would not soon be coming his way before the night was out. [Kyden] was completely ignored by Rosie as she only had eyes for Elora, the two becoming fast friends through some light conversation on getting settled in. Better luck next time Kyden. All the while, [Asteria] read and [Syrah] did nothing...

❝As if by clockwork, I egressed from my bedchambers and stepped back into the now partly silver and gold manse that had been brought to life by the imaginings of a bunch of prepubescents. I was still smiling as I addressed the room, watching with equal parts glee and woe at the nonet. "You have all done splendidly, but now I must bid you goodnight. I expect everyone to be in their beds by no later than ten thirty." I glanced at Ms. Parker and Mr. Fleur in particular, casting the most surreptitious look I could their way. "Everyone needs to be in bed." It would seem that I was picking on these two, but it was out of concern that I did so. I did not wish to see them sleep on the cold, hard ground. The Cabin had revoked their ability to imagine their own room, for the night at least, and where I saw Ms. Parker at the very least making an attempt to socialize, Mr. Fleur seemed intent on ignoring all and sundry.
"The lights will dim at forty-five past ten, and by eleven they will fade altogether. I expect to hear nothing but snoring or light breathing upon this hour. And please remember the rules. It is forbidden to leave the Cabin past midnight. If you have business you wish to take care of, feel free to conjure a washroom. Most of you will be able to do so, at the very least." Once again I shot a look at Mr. Fleur and Ms. Parker. They would not have such luxury and were reduced to sharing everything with the others. With a thespian bow, I bid them goodnight, turning on my heels and ambling back into my own room. Before the door closed on its own, they would hear my melodic voice carrying on in a windless whisper for a final time. "We are the Lethifolds." There it was. Omne trium perfectum. The rule of three had been invoked. For those who had been paying attention, the words being repeated for the third time would raise some red flags.
There was no context, no explanation. Nothing to hint at what I meant. Have a pleasant sleep Lethifolds. The night will soon be over.❞

It was dark as pitch, the dim light in the Cabin that had no source long since doused. The only saving grace seemed to be the small galaxy that had been created by the girl Syrah, and Valtome's enjoyment of the effect that caused him to spread it along the entirety of the ceiling. This was a source of light that left the large area with some semblance of light, enough to make out the shapes of shadows and silhouettes. The students would have already been asleep. Or should be. But there were always those few night owls who remained alert as everyone slept. Valtome's instructions had been clear. Everyone was to be in bed by now, outside was off limits, and those without a space of their own needed to see about finding one to rest their weary heads.
The nonexistent clock struck a minute past midnight, and it was then that the strange ensued. The room grew darker, colder, gloomier; all the color seemed to be sucked away. If one could see through the dim glow fighting a losing battle with the gloom, they would notice their breath frosting before them as they exhaled, but the temperature had not dropped enough that they would shiver. The darkness would last, but the vigilant eye would adjust quickly to find that they could still see the outlines of patterns and shapes. And then they would go deaf. No. Not deaf. Rather, any sound that they might hear would seem so distant, as if being shouted up at them from a very deep well. This all seemed eerily familiar indeed.
If they were not awake by now, then they would surely do so when they heard the cries of a small family of Hippogriff as their hearing went back to normal. Edric would hear it best, as the sound originated from directly above him. If he opened his eyes he would see that the space on the ceiling that his Hippogriff friends had occupied only moments ago as they slept was now vacant, and the small galaxy was wafting inward to crowd the bare space. A moment later they would hear soft, almost sibilant whispers rising and falling in pitch all around them as their ears adjusted and readjusted to and from the deep-well effect that had plagued them before. What could possibly be happening? Three missing Hippogriffs? Their safe haven of a Cabin suddenly gone haywire? And there in the corner, to a far edge of the room, a shade pressed against the wall of silver and gold now turned to pitch, darker and more prominent than any other shadow that lingered.

Taking a look at the girl who offered him a space in her loft, Lyonel’s eyebrows shot up in surprise, before he regained his control over his features once again. He nodded ever so slightly before shuffling closer into her loft, while clearly ignoring the professor’s notion to go to bed. Not because he wanted to be rude, he simply could not. All in his mind screamed to stay away from the girl’s belongings or anyone’s belongings. He simply could not, it was not in his power to do so and he would honestly rather die than stepping out of these comfort zones. The thought of sharing a bed means death for the young boy. The lights would extinguish but clearly magic would not. He just could not touch one of these beds that were not his own. Lyonel could not use any of the bathrooms without using the Scouring Spell. His backpack, that was small but had a lot of space, hid his belongings such as bottles and boxes with crèmes, ointments and whatever it was he needed.
He read until midnight and when the lights dimmed, he leaned against the wall in defeat, closing his eyes. He would not sleep this night, that was for sure but he would not let anyone force him to share a bed with someone, not even if it had been an order by his favorite professor. Something seemed to change when the clock strikes midnight, while the room grew darker and colder. The change in atmosphere sent goosebumps over his skin as the boy opened his eyes. It took only a small amount of time until his eyes adjusted to the darkness, letting him see rough shapes.
Lyonel pulled out a quill and parchment from his backpack and began to write onto the parchment. His eyes began used to the dark already it was not a difficult Task as he often wrote into his Notebook late at night, whenever something crossed his mind. Now he was writing a letter that he would place Close to the professor's loft, inaudible and most likely unnoticed if the man with the elven ears was not a really light sleeper. He would maybe only see it at the morning, or whenever he would awoke at night.

Cabin of the Lethifold
Edric's lips automatically morphed into a big smile when Angela started to ask about the Hippogriffs. He could see how excited she was about the topic, and this in turn made him excited at the prospect of talking to her. The herd had been a part of his life for eleven years and he couldn't imagine a future without Hippogriffs and Winged Horses in it.
He watched with interest as she conjured and owl onto the ceiling that was tiny compared to Butterwing, Silvertalon and Swiftfeather. It was tiny enough to be their food in all honesty, and while those Hippogriffs were only reflections of the real ones, conjured by his will and the power of the tent onto the canvas that was the ceiling, he opened his mouth to warn her that this maybe wasn't that good an idea, but before a word came out the Slytherin had thankfully vanished the small owl again.
"Well, Hippogriffs are..." he stopped mid-sentence, when Professor Valtome suddenly entered the room. He stood at attention and listened to his words, knowing that a breach of the rules would have severe consequences - Edric liked to be able to make whatever he imagined reality inside the cabin, so he had every intention to sick to the rules. Be in bed by ten thirty, lights out by eleven.
The Potions Professor left them with another ominous "We are the Lethifolds". How many times had he said that now? Three? Four?
Shrugging it off as his guess about the meaning of the sentence wasn't any better than it had been the first or the second time Professor Valtome had said it, Edric turned back to Angela. "I think..." he began, frowned, pointed his wand at the wall behind his bed, and imagined the clock from his kitchen at home. "Oh, we only have a few minutes till bedtime. I'm sorry, Angela. But I can tell you all about the Hippogriffs tomorrow if you'd like!" Without noticing he'd slipped into a slight Welsh accent again. "Tomorrow, then. Goodnight."
Afraid of the Professor coming to check on them and finding him still up, Edric lifted his wand and conjured himself a simple bathroom. He hurried to get ready for bed, being one of the first to get into his bed. The mattress was as comfortable as he had expected it to be and with all the pillows around he really felt like he was sleeping in a nest. He turned on his back, watching the Hippogriffs chasing each other across the miniature sky playfully and fell asleep over it within minutes.
Edric woke up... from what exactly? Drowsy as he was he turned once to look onto the lake, and then started to realize where he was. Right. Cabin of the Lethifold. Professor Valtome. Of course there was no eerie green lake to look at, but a faintly glowing ceiling that resembled the galaxy...
The Hippogriffs! That was what had woken him, he realized, suddenly sitting upright in his bed. There had been a screech, an all-to-familiar one. Fixing his eyes on the ceiling above his bed he searched for his friends... and found nothing. They were gone. The three Hippogriffs as well as the space they had occupied.
"Cachu hwch!" he cursed. Where had they gone? Was that supposed to be a prank? Had another student vanished them? He looked around in the darkness in search of the culprit, and only then realized how cold it suddenly had become. The room had been comfortably warm ever since he'd entered it, same for his conjured bathroom. Now however, he could feel his breath forming warm mist in the freezing air.
He pulled his fluffy blanket tighter around himself.
The room was dead silent, too. Just like the surrounding of the tent had been this afternoon, he abruptly remembered. This felt the same like earlier. Was this a trick from Professor Valtome? Did he want to scare them?
Then, suddenly, someone started to whisper. At first he thought that another student had woken as well and was about to answer when more voices began to join the first. The sound of them... no, those weren't the other children. Those voices were not from this world.
"Adre', adre' am y cynta. Hwch Ddu Gwta a gipio'r ola," he mubled under his breath, now shivering despite the blanket.
No, this wasn't Noson Calan Gaeaf, there was no Hwch Ddu Gwta roaming around the tent in search of children to eat. His fear was ridiculous. There was nothing truly dangerous inside the cabin. The Professor was just trying to scare them. That was what Edric told himself at least, huddling deeper into his blanket and pillows.
His wand had been lying on the nightstand and he almost dropped it because his fingers were shaking so badly. "Lumos," he whispered and moved his wand, his voice getting drowned by the whispers that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at the same time.

~x~

Cabin of the Lethifold
Asteria let out a small silent yawn; she wasn't sure what time it was, but she felt as though it had to be kind of late out. 'I really should have remember to add a clock' Asteria thought to herself, 'I still could, nothing is stopping me.' Looking over at her dresser, Asteria put her book down and let her imagination get to work, near the front of the dresser appeared a silver alarm clock. The numbers where elegantly painted in a nice cursive like slant, the background of the numbers was coloured a pale pink and the hands of the clock each had six very small diamonds embedded into it. It reminded her almost of the alarm clock her aunt and uncle had at their house.
While she was at it, Asteria thought it would be nice to add some flowers. One of the first things she thought about was a pretty crystal vase she saw at a shop once. It had a Gothic period design to it the Asteria found nice, in the vase was a gorgeous bouquet of Purple, blue and yellow Iris'. It was this vase and flowers that had popped into her mind first and as a result appeared on her dresser. Content with the new additions, Asteria decided to continue to search through her books. There had to be more information on Lethifolds somewhere. She looked through 'Fantastic Beast and Where To Find Them', but sadly there was barely anything there. Maybe her uncle would know? He was a Magizoologist after all, maybe he or someone he knows knew more about them. As she contemplated writing to her uncle, Asteria heard Professor Valtome speak, "You have all done splendidly, but now I must bid you goodnight. I expect everyone to be in their beds by no later than ten thirty." he said."The lights will dim at forty-five past ten, and by eleven they will fade altogether. I expect to hear nothing but snoring or light breathing upon this hour." Asteria listened as he explained. Looking over at her alarm clock, she saw she had a small amount of time left to go through her books. "And please remember the rules. It is forbidden to leave the Cabin past midnight. If you have business you wish to take care of, feel free to conjure a washroom. Most of you will be able to do so, at the very least." The professor began to open the door to his room saying once more, "We are the Lethifolds."
It was then that Asteria thought it would be a good idea to see if her uncle knew anything on Lethifolds. Asteria turned from her book, opened her dresser and took out her quill, ink, and parchment paper. Using a book as a table, Asteria laid on her stomach and began to write.
Deciding to see if she could send it in the morning, Asteria neatly folded up the letter and tucked it away in one of her books and put it in her dresser. She wasn't One-Hundred percent sure if there really was something going on, but better safe than sorry.
I wasn't long before it was time for bed, Asteria rested underneath her nice warm blanket. She was a semi-light sleeper, she wasn't sure how noisy camping could be but with Professor Valtome as their head of cabin, she was sure he wasn't one to let the area be disturbed. As she drifted off into slumber underneath the starry ceiling; Asteria gripped her blanket tighter as she the room grew colder. "Blimey." Asteria said in a low voice as to not disturb the others. She tried to ignore the cold and continue to sleep, but a unusual feeling of melancholy began to set in. Asteria's green eyes snapped open at recognizing this familiar sensation. It was the same as what happened when she arrived at the tent; Asteria's eyes tried to adjust only to realize the room was darker that it should be. Her now visible breath rose into the air just like back then.

Cabin of the Lethifold

In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni.
In all honesty, the words were erroneous. The author of the quote completely messed up the declensions and conjugations until it was difficult for comprehension, but somehow it had been translated-- and she quite liked the meaning of the palindrome. We go into the circle at night and are consumed by fire. A riddle of a sentence-- what was this animal? Reader, might you know?
"We are the Lethifolds," the professor's mellifluous voice drifted toward them, a departing word as Cel set her book down-- on the ground-- and stiffened straight. Omne trium perfectum. The girl recognized the Rule of Three when she saw it, and she saw it well-- something, she didn't know what, was to come their way, and those who were not prepared would not be ready.
As the girl turned back from where the words were written in her shelves, she found herself sitting upright in the hanging mattress, blankets covering her from the waist down, her hands folded neatly before her. They were supposed to sleep; she knew that much, but it was dark-- and she could not as her mind began to weave stories in the blackness.
Monsters roam the dark, her mind tested. Then I shall become one, and prowl with them, she replied. The light will not return, it hissed. Neither will I, Cel answered. For a moment it drew back. The dark will not leave you, it said finally. I, then, shall rule it. In this manner, the voices shut up at last, and the nyctophobia left her. It was dark, dark, dark-- in the same way it could be light, light, light. She would not be consumed by fire, chasing the light.
Soliloquy was, however, not to be pursued, by the look of things. She did not sleep. She did not wait. She was still in the darkness, still and silent, just as the cabin was. The darkness calmed her now; she would not sleep for quite a while, for her eyes swept around the room, noting each student and his or her wakefulness, able to see under the light of the moon that hung suspended in Syrah's galaxy, a light that only she could see by.
Screeches. Cries. Not human. Her heterochromatic eyes, bright with the night's glow, darted toward the Hippogriffs' ceiling-- gone. Still, she was silent, even the movement of her teal hair on the silk of her pajamas-- courtesy of Parker-- was disguised in her quiescence. The tick of her clockwork device was loud in her ears, a tickticktickticktick and the near-silent groan of turning gears disturbing the night. The other students seemed to be waking; good, or maybe not, as they did not seem prepared as herself, her own self with her knife and wand within easy reach, with her wits about her, unmarred by fatigue and weariness.
Oblivious of her fellow cabinmates' urgent whispers-- well, not quite oblivious, but not so concentrated on it-- Cel fixated on the corner of the cabin where darkness grew, a void of black, truly the absence of light, true black. Ah, so this was what he meant, she hurried to think as the nyctophobia took over again-- the darkness, the darkness, it pursues. Let it come to me then, for I am a Lethifold. Truly, these thoughts seemed like something out of a novel, not her, but then, it was these thoughts that allowed her to survive.
"And what might that be?" she murmured, not loud enough to hear, and she rose slightly from her bed, swinging her legs over the edge, and stood, swaying a little in her curiosity, puissant over fear. Perhaps this was a bit dramatic, but she did what she wanted, did she not? Tick. A step she took forward. Tick. Another. Tick. She stopped walking. Tick. The wand and her knife were in her sash. Brightly her eyes tracked the patch of blackness, and she knelt down, fixing her stare on it, unwilling to move further. What, exactly, is this?
Impar. Curiosum. Odd. Curious.

Cabin of the Lethifold
Omne Trium Perfectum
Lyonel
How grand it is, being a child, blissfully unaware of the darkness that loomed in the world. Hung from the sky in burdensome woe like a weight that has experienced to full extent the modulation and implication of time. Yes. A few slept the time away without a care in the world. But others... Others were more aware. Others knew better than to close their eyes to the unknown. Others struggled with their own inner demons while others simply could not sleep.
One such restless soul, [Lyonel], had refrained from partaking in the sweet reprieve that was sleep, spending the time compsoing a letter that would not be seen nor heard while the darkness persisted. A bold move on his part, for mere inches away from him the blot of blacker than black hovered in stillness like an imprint on the wall, watching, waiting, oh so close. And yet the time had not been right. The boy with platinum blonde had come dangerously close to the jowls of ruinous demise.

Edric
Others felt the loss. "Lumos," muttered the shaking boy, seeking comfort from the spell they all knew well. A source of protective light, he sought, but only darkness met his plee. Why hadn't it worked? The word had power, such power to conjure the light. Yet nothing had happened at his utterance save for a chilling feeling of dread at the realization that something was seriously wrong. [Edric] was a smart young man. A kind young man. A gentle soul that understood much of the good, and little of the bad.
But a Slytherin he was, and there are always reasons. What was it that Professor Valtome had said? "Imagination. It is all that is required to effect great change. Envision it in your mind's eye, direct the power of your thoughts through your wand and project your will into the world. This space will make it happen." Something to ponder as the shadow hovered closer, drawn by the sound of his breathy voice.
A sudden spine-chilling whisper would erupt into a bone-curdling scream too close to the boy before he found himself violently dragged from his bed by unseen hands and hoisted high into the air, almost touching the ceiling. Voices familiar and voices unknown he could hear where he hung, the bed directly below. And an unshakable feeling that he was being enshrouded by the darkness.

Asteria
Others doubted the power of their own thoughts. For thoughts had power. Power far beyond what can be consciously conceived. But conceived nonetheless. [Asteria] knew more than she believed. Far more than anyone knew. The air about her was cold, the feeling of dread prominent, and the isolation dour. "What's happening?" she would call. But the voice that answered did not belong to whom she had expected.
"We have come to watch. We have come to play. We have come to watch. We have come to play. We have come to watch. We have come to play." The voices were clamorous and many, sounding like a confusion of hundreds speaking in discordant unison. Children, adults, male, female, the voices ranging from the deep and guttural to the high-pitched and lilting. Their answer raised far more questions, but it was the closeness of them that she would first notice. They were everywhere and nowhere, and yet they said nothing more.
Her letter that rested in the book in her dresser had done more than she would ever know, for even that instance of calligraphy had met the criteria of this cabin. Imagination. Pure and unknown. Words are power, and hers were written. Written with the intention of getting answers from Uncle Will, answers she would get, for she had willed it so. "Omne trium perfectum", she would hear in her mind, the voice of Uncle Will giving answer to her question. "He wants you to understand. He wants you to believe. He wants you to imagine." A pause. "There is power in threes."
Then the voice vanished, replaced now by the too-close cacophony of voices. "We have come to watch. We have come to play. We have come to watch. We have come to play. We have come to watch. We have come to play."

Celynne
Others understood the darkness and called it "old friend". Omne trium perfectum. The rule of three. It is known by all, but understood by few. Few was one on this night, and one was here in this very Cabin. [Celynne]. Bright girl. Bookish girl. Brilliant girl. The strange words were known to her, and knowledge, as we know, is power.
"Monsters roam the dark", the voice came. "Then I shall become one, and prowl with them," she replied. "The light will not return," the voice hissed. "Neither will I," she answered. The darkness recoiled but slightly, uncertain in the face of such power that the girl possesed. She understood it. It had somehow become something known where at once it had been unknown. And then it tried. The dark will not leave you." "I, then, shall rule it." The cacophonous voices faded into the ether, watching her from the shadows. The power of her will could not be denied. She was dangerous, whether she knew it or not.
The darkness hung as far from her as it could, the sting of losing the battle of wills still fresh. It stared into her as she stared into it, a war beyond the phsyical plain underway. "The darkness, the darkness, it pursues." "Let it come to me then, for I am a Lethifold." Such power. The darkness recoiled further, shrinking slightly as the girl left the comfort of her makeshift bed and stalked closer. She had won the battle of wills, the power of her mind a testament to behold. Her question, a command, was met with tentative acquiscence in response. "We are the Lethifold." No more context. No more words. No more whispers. She had won. She had gotten her answer. She was in control.
But what would she do with this control?

Syrah | Angela | Kyden | Elora | Rosie
Others slept, blissfully unaware. And yet, nescience was no defense. It was a state of vulnerability that made one more susceptible to torment and wickedness. The Professor had said it best. "While the Lethifold devours its victim, the victim dreams of many things. While one dreams they are at their most vulnerable, inviting the Lethifold to come and do as it pleases." Less curious minds, these were, but no less active. No less aware. No less delectable. These sleeping minds held particular appeal, and the shadows were ready to consume. But as they crept closer, hovering along the surface, they were met with resistance, such resistance that lingered even as the children slept.
Imagination. Keen instructions had been given first and foremost to use their minds to create a space uniquely their own. Most managed the deed with resounding effect, while others did not. Could not. Or simply did not know how. Further still, explicit instructions had been given by the Professor for them all to turn in before a certain hour struck. These were the truly lucky ones to an extent, for without context behind the words to better understand what was truly being said, they had obeyed. The rooms, derived from the thoughts of each, became charged with such power that could only be conjured through dreams. REM, as the body lost its use, found the mind becoming far more powerful than it could ever hope to be in waking.
The shadows knew this, and yet they hovered close by in teeming numbers. They were waiting patiently for something, something that only they knew would come to pass. A guess as to what and one would instantly know the answer. The space. Some had created far more fortifiable spaces than others, and the shadows would use this technicality against those who had not taken liberties in extravagance and total command of the power at their disposal. [Syrah] and the divider she had chosen offered very little protection from the outside. Physically, anyone could step around and invade her space. Mentally, as this was a mental contest, it was a matter of mere moments before the charged power of her threshold could be crossed.
[Kyden] had taken such liberties, his room a staunch defender against the presence that menaced the night. The shadows would try and fail, try and fail, for the young man had an exceptional employment of foresight, having been the only one to summon a complete enclosure that barred the outside world from within. [Angela]'s egg was magnificent, by far the most out-of-the-box conjuration in the space. It offered protection, a great deal of it, but was not as complete as Kyden's room. There was still a layer of invasiveness present at the top, and it was only a matter of time before the shadows managed to creep along the edges and invade. She had more protection than Syrah, and would outlast the girl because of it, but she was not safe. Far from it.
Finally there was [Elora] and [Rosie], two girls thrust together by need and circumstance. They had not known each other prior, but seemed to have become close in the short time they did. Her space was by no means elaborate, or as enclosed and free from outside intervention as Kyden's. But hers had something more. Something that the others lacked. It was a powerful thing, a child's imagination, and the accidental conjuring of her stuffed animals would prove to be the most propitious of accidents that one may ever witness. The Hippogriff, the Bowtruckle, and the Phoenix, as she slept, came to life and stood watch in the darkness. Her guardians in the night. Rosie, by invitation and not force, had been welcomed into Elora's space, and as such she would find herself on the receiving end of the same protection that her friend enjoyed. The shadows would not dare contend with the power of at least two of the three mythical creatures, for certain resistance and defeat would be met.
Three boasted absolute protection. One, moderate protection. The last, tentative protection. The shadows would consume this night.

Valtome
Others boasted true power as they slept. Power in the form of those very dreams that had been mentioned in warning. 'Think it. Dream it. Believe it.' Three words that had been spoken aloud. 'We are the Lethifolds.' A phrase that had been spoke aloud. Questions had been raised, and wonders all had been present to behold. And yet most curious of all were these words that the man had repeated time and again. We are the Lethifolds. Imagination is power. Dreaming is one such method to invoke one's imagination to full effect, affecting such change to be felt by all and sundry. The Professor slept, and as he did so, madness reigned in the most subtle and beautiful form beyond his resting place.
Inside [Valtome]'s room there was nothing to be heard but perfect silence and the gentle sound of his light breathing. Prima facie, nothing seemed amiss. The soft glow of moonlight still filtered in through the windows. The cool, silver-blue reflection in the room remained gentle and unassuming. The sleeping form of the Professor was a study in peace and tranquility, such serenity that could never hope to be replicated. And yet, as he slept on the outside, he dreamed on the inside. Questions were asked. Words were spoken. Screams rented the air. Darkness. Silence. Uncertainty.
It was Valtome. None would know.
