Lily Isobel McCoire had had a rough year in America. After her parents had died, she had been left with dealing with the grieving and healing. She hadn't been dealing with the process well so Colin's parents had suggested she go to America for her third year and try to heal there. Lily had agreed to go and when the beginning of the school year started she found herself at Ilvermony. She adjusted (she always did) and got used to it. She had family there too, Cursa McCoire as well as the A-twins as she called them. But when the school year finished, she begged her brothers family to come pick her up and bring her back to her home country of Scotland. That way she'd be attending her third year at Hogwarts all over again. However, a professor had heard that she wanted to come back and owled her adoptive parents if she wanted to take an exam to pick up where she left off and continue on to year 4. Her parents agreed so during the summer, Lily studied as hard as she could to catch herself up and when it was time for the exam she steadied herself. She could do this!
One of the things that helped her was her brothers, Colin and Liam McCoire. He was a fourth year so he knew exactly what would be studied at Hogwarts and what the spells were et cetera. He knew what she had not studied at Ilvermony that had been studied at Hogwarts and how she could hopefully pass the exam. True, she didn't know what the questions were but at least she figured she had at least, maybe aced it. After all, the amount of studying she usually did not do definitly amounted to something right? Right.
The day of the exam she took a deep breath and let Colin and Liam test her on the likely questions that may be on the exam. Once she had quite enough of the testing (made all the less serious because of Liam and Colin) she just put her mind at ease. Once it was time to start, Lily flipped the exam paper over and started answering the questions. She finished with less than two minutes left on the clock and she handed it in to the exam professor, confident that she had at least gotten an E on it. 401/400

He spent his summer feeling incredibly drab. He didn’t want to share the same year as that horrid, slimy, cringy and violent rat that they call Prat Pass. The boy had hurt him, one time he was leaving the Astronomy Classroom and got hurt on the moving stairwell!

Clark wasn’t going to have it. He was going to study. But god, how studying sucked! It could be more fun, more.. well.. engaging. It just wasn’t all that to Clark. Clark sighed, and grabbed his textbooks for the next school year, the third year, and looked through it. He allowed himself to pour over each and every page as fast as his eyes would allow him and as slow as his brain would retain the information he would’ve learned. In other words, he continued to read at a normal pace, taking about a week to read the core classes' textbooks.

He mostly spent the time focusing on classes that would benefit him in an offensive position, rather than defensive, or for decorum, but any way it went, he still spent the time studying and trying to learn.

He went to take his test not too long after, while he still had the newfound knowledge in his brain. He didn’t look at who was administering, he didn’t want to embarrass himself or anything if he saw this person in the halls the upcoming school year. He covered his eyebrows, acting as if he were shielding his eyes from the light, his elbow perked up against the desk and he began to write and answer as many questions as he could. These questions seemed to be a mix of things that have been mentioned in his textbooks and even things that were heavily talked about, like the history of the Full Body-Bind Curse. He struggled with the topics that talked about such decorative spells, such as an Owl to Opera Glasses. When he did his studying, and came across this, all he could think about was someone turning his wonderful owl, Elton Peeta Baird, into opera glasses and Clark not knowing about it.

He did his best to answer the questions and to be as detailed as he could on written portions and on the parts of the multiple choice questions, he tried the process of elimination to remove what didn’t make sense and what did, to try and determine the proper answer.

At the end, he turned in the assignment, still doing his best to hide his shame for being ‘held back’ and having to take the test just to move forward.

Vladislav was grounded by his dad for the summer, therefore he remained in his room surrounded by textbooks just to study and force himself to endure with as much distaste he had for it. He had the textbooks for the new school year, and definitely didn’t want to read those, but he was going to. If he was going to pass time by, he needed to study, and hell, maybe he can talk his dad into taking him to get advanced a school year, since he was held back himself during the 2024-2025 school year.

He focused a lot on the charms textbook so he could be rather proficient in it, but he also spent his time reading about, and dedicating time to, the history of different spells and their noted historical uses and by who. For the History of Magic, he paid close attention to the three different wizarding wars, both started by an overall two people; like Grindelwald for the Global Wizarding War from 1926 to 1945, and the Wizarding Wars of 1970 to 1981 then 1995 to 1998 as initiated by Voldemort. Both were fascinating subjects, but he couldn’t dwell too much on it, as summer didn’t last forever and he wanted to move up to the year he wanted to be in as soon as possible, so he went ahead and spent a couple days reading each individual textbook; as he only had eight new textbooks for the new school year, it took him approximately 24 days to read through them all and take notes, as well as even practice casting where it was applicable.

After spending nearly a month studying, he walked up to his dad and asked if he could go to get advanced. His dad agreed, but said he’d be waiting for him to be finished so his grounding could continue. Vladislav agreed to this condition and they arrived to the testing destination in where Vladislav had to answer a ton of questions, some confusing him completely as they talked about such things like Herbology and Runes, and admittedly, neither of those subjects he read much about. He knew the basics of the basics, but not much about them, it would take his best guess and that’s exactly what he put into his test. It was either him knowing the answer from his nearly-a-month-long study or him guessing.

When he finished the test, he turned in the test and walked out of the room, hating that he now had to go back home and resume his grounding. Well, if he did pass the test, he would advance, which was at least the most important thing to him. He would cross his fingers and beg to the gods that he did, in fact, advance.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Evony was held back due to falling behind in her studies.

Evony’s First Year at Hogwarts had started strong. She was motivated, confident, and proud. However, as the months passed, she slowly began to fall behind. She had been excited to be sorted into the Slytherin house; she truly felt that was where she belonged. However, she soon found that the house culture was more competitive and isolating than she expected. So many of the other Slytherins were tough, hard, and - honestly - cruel or just obnoxious. They were overly dramatic, snarky… Evony didn’t need friends, of course, but… it was quite draining when the students around her were always so stifling rather than supportive.
Perhaps her social struggles added to her academic frustrations, but she began to lose motivation toward certain subjects - specifically those with no practical, hands-on spellwork, like History of Magic, Astronomy, Herbology, and even Flying. They just seemed so… pointless. So, her work in these classes began to slip. It was so easy to just skimp out on the work, and by the end of the year, she was skipping classes as well. She had convinced herself that doing well in these classes didn’t matter as much; “real” classes like Charms, DADA, Transfiguration, and Potions were what would make her a powerful witch. Besides, she could always catch up later, right?
Well, then the letter came. Evony flushed with instant regret and embarrassment as she read about the summer make-up exam. She would need to receive a passing score, or she would not be permitted to advance to Second Year. And so, her preparations began. She used every bit of summer time allotted to her before the exam to study and catch up on her theoretical subjects. She dedicated a space in her room for extreme focus: candles, notes, calming incense…
She made (and stuck to!) a schedule: History and Fly theory in the morning, Herbology in the afternoon, and Astronomy in the evening.
Her wall was lined with timeline posters and little sticky notes with dates, names, and facts: The Gargoyle Strike, The Goblin Rebellions, The Soap Blizzard, The Witch Hunt Era, The Salem Witch Trials… all the events she should have learned throughout her First Year of History of Magic. She reviewed them each morning before reading her textbook, self-studying with flashcards, and sometimes even playing out dramatic reenactments just to help her remember important events.
For Fly, she had notes and diagrams on the development of the Racing Broom, lists of broom companies and models (including the major features of each), and extra books on the rules, mechanics, and history of Quidditch and official Broom Racing competitions. She created flight trajectory maps and scribbled out possible obstacle courses that might help her with practical flying once she was back at school. She attempted to memorize the most common Quidditch maneuvers, though this was one of her most dreaded tasks.
When studying Herbology, she attempted some hands-on gardening with a few mundane plants, and otherwise sketched and wrote out notes for the various magical plants (Mandrakes, Bouncing Bulbs, Gillyweed, Fireseed Bush, Honking Daffodils… and so many more). To motivate her to care about the plants, she applied her Herbology studies toward other subjects such as noting any and all uses of the plants as potion ingredients and looking up which plants could be used in teas and divination.
She was often exhausted by the time she got to studying Astronomy each night, but she tracked and labeled the constellations, studied her wall calendar of the moon phases and their effects on magic… She had drawings and notes on each of the planets (including the dwarf planets)... and she often fell asleep at her window, snuggled up close to her small telescope.
Finally, the day of the exam came. She was taken to an empty Hogwarts classroom with a few other students and an exam administrator. She took a deep breath as she opened her texting booklet and inked her quill. As her eyes scanned the first page, a slow smile came to her lips. Yeah, she’s got this. Everything will be just fine…

Jayden’s eyes danced over the page for the hundredth time, and still, nothing seemed to stick. Her brain felt like mush. She had hoped being out in nature would help her concentrate, rather than holed up in a quiet cabin, studying all day. Walls were suffocating, but the outdoors was equally a distraction, the babbling river and whistling birdsong begging her to come play and flee all of her troubles with school and family and life…

Not that family was all that bad, for Jayden to be ungrateful for. Her grandparents had been kind, to let her spend some summertime here at her hometown in Wyoming, if the Village would help her keep her peace. But her parents… Their deaths had changed her for both better and for worse, and the two year-long void left by their absence had yet to be completely filled, inside her heart.

“What’cha doin’?” A familiar voice jerked Jayden’s eyes off the page, glancing at Matano who called out to her in a soft, sing-song tone.

A smile crept up her lips as the tall young wizard gingerly approached her. His tanned brown skin, tousled black hair, and strong dark eyes. Despite his catlike attempts to appear aloof, indifferent and mysterious, Matano was no less a puppy tethered to her on a string, whenever Jayden drifted away too far, too long from him. Then he just had to creep up on her and poke her for attention.

“Reading,” she replied, glancing down at the book again. Not really. She hadn’t turned a page in over twenty minutes. More like staring at it, hoping the inked words would somehow sink into her skull.

A little hum of interest followed, as Matano stepped closer to observe. “What’re you reading?”

“School. Ilvermorny stuff.” Rolling off of her belly, Jayden sat upright, textbook open in her lap as Matano took the invitation to sit down beside her.

The exam date was fast approaching. Jayden had told Matano weeks ago about the Advancement Program she had signed up for, that it wouldn’t hurt to try her luck with the exam and move up a year, one year closer to becoming an Auror, she hoped. But as her anger and grief subsided over the years following her parents’ deaths in their line of duty as Aurors, so did Jayden’s drive to want to excel in school. Books had never been her calling. Formal classroom instruction just wasn’t the right fit for her. Not to mention all the NEWTS she would have to take to qualify for the Auror program. The tests wouldn’t stop there, after graduation…

Jayden sighed wearily, gazing across the river. “Honestly I’m rethinking the whole Auror thing. I dunno how my parents did it.” Her parents, and all the other relatives who made an Auror’s legacy of her family tree. “They’re all so smart and I’m so stupid,” she mumbled.

“No, you’re not,” Matano chided gently, taking the textbook into his hands and flipping a page. Soaking it up like a sponge, no doubt. Jayden couldn’t help but feel jealous of Matano’s memory when it came to reciting texts word for word.

She gazed at him admirably. You should be the one at Ilvermorny…” Jayden murmured. ”You’re the booky smart competitive type. You would’ve fit right in.”

“Yeah, I should have,” Matano smirked. He could sense Jayden’s discouragement that her best efforts wouldn’t be enough to pass the Advancement exam. In that moment, Matano made it his personal mission to help her succeed.

When he had finished the chapter, he turned to Jayden. “All right. Pick up your wand, we’re doing this.” Matano rose to his feet, book in hand, with all the calm, commanding presence of an instructor.

With a chuckle, Jayden followed suit. In some ways, Matano knew her better than she knew herself. She thought she could do it all on her own, that the “wolfpack”, the principle of teamwork, didn’t apply to anything she did outside of the Village, to her studies at Ilvermorny. She would’ve been too proud to let Matano help otherwise, if not for his calculated ways in cozying up to her.

Having a play-pretend student and teacher in Matano made things so much more fun and entertaining for Jayden to learn. He would read to her, she would listen and do, enacting the words, practicing her spellcasting. They studied together, taught each other, finishing the stack of textbooks Jayden had brought with her from her grandparents’ apartment in New York. He was patient, creative. His energy bounced off of hers perfectly. The best friend and teacher she could ask for. And perhaps…something more.

She would pass this exam for the both of them.

Laurie put her quill back in its stand, as she opened the curtains of her bedroom window. She had not visited her uncle for two days, but kept in constant touch with him, knowing his critical situation. It all had just happened so quickly- the day in which she got that miserable owl from her aunt still had a vivid image in her mind. Two whole years. Just when she had started making friends, started to adapt to her new home, it had all changed, with just a few words, and a train ride home. Those days were terrifying; Laurie was home alone for nights alone, praying continuously for her uncle, when everybody else had already started grieving in despair.

Of course, Laurie hadn't given up, she just knew that they all would make it out of this mess, one way or the other. It was hard, but still, she was determined. That was important in times like this. Of course, she didn't want to leave her friends behind, just when she had started to make them. The Hogwarts staircases, the Great Hall, the dormitory and the Slytherin Common Room had already started becoming home to her.
Now after two long years, Hogwarts was just a faint memory.
The last time she was there, she was a child, just the mere age of eleven years. Now she was a teenager, and even though she would have liked to grow up alongside her friends, it was alright, Family mattered more than anything else in the world, and her aunt and uncle were the closest family she ever had and would get.
That day, Laurie had come home aboard the Knight Bus, and even though the ride was extremely wonky, Laurie had other, more important things on her mind. Like sitting beside her uncle and constantly repeating the same three words she didn't have that much use for until now. I love you.
Nobody knew how it happened, but miraculously, his health started to improve, bringing hope. Still, he was not the same. A few more days, and he would be discharged from the hospital. A few more days, and Laurie would be going back to Hogwarts. While of course, she was eagerly waiting, she felt like she had to relive the whole process of being new again.
As for her studies- well, Laurie kept up with the curriculum at home, studying for two to three hours a day from her textbook, making sure she doesn't lag behind in school at her return, Sometimes, when she was alone, Laurie would practice the practical spells using her wand.
Laurie knew going back would be a huge change. But she knew she wasn't alone.

Hogwarts seems to come to her in a dream, or at least that’s what it feels like. Claudia didn’t remember much she had learnt whilst at the school. She hadn’t made any friends, even though she’d tried her hardest. Maybe she just wasn’t that interesting? She’d never had to utilise the confusing weapon of small talk before in the forests of her childhood, and it certainly hadn’t saved her from what had came. Did her professors even know her name? She doubted it.

Claudia sat at the tacky plastic table in Naomi and Micaela’s Edinburgh flat, staring down at her History of Magic textbook. She squeezed her eyes closed and tried to pretend that she was sat in the classroom she had once spend time in, the professor lecturing and the students scribbling down their notes with hurried efficiency. This was something that she’d been trying to use, but it wasn’t seeming to work. If only she could trick her brain that she was in a learning environment again, then maybe it would be okay. Maybe in this alternate reality she had friends who sat next to her and helped her with the questions. Maybe in this reality the professor knew her name. A dark haired girl next to her laughs at her joke, and she can’t help but laugh back. Claudia looked down at her desk, but it didn’t look like a desk anymore. There was a suspicious green stain next to her hand, and the wizened old wood looked like an ordinary Muggle plastic. Weird. Her eyes flicked up, and the room wasn’t a classroom, it was a study at home. Once a cozy and comfortable abode, full with the cranberry incense Micaela used to burn to hide the smell of her potions, now felt cold and empty, the shell of an experiment gone wrong.

Micaela was away getting treatment, the whole reason Claudia was back home instead of wasting her life away in a school she didn’t feel welcome in. She’d been pulled out in the middle of a class, and the whole room had paid more attention to her then than ever before. Whilst she had to continue her studies at home, her teacher was nothing other than unqualified. She’d heard the glory stories of Aunt Naomi’s time at Ilvermorny, and how she had always been better than Claudia’s mother. But, with Micaela unresponsive elsewhere, Naomi was unresponsive to her necessary teachings. She had bigger things on her mind, nobody could doubt that, but that meant she left Claudia by herself at the table most times, writing down her notes in the same quiet, solo state she had back in school.

This cycle repeated itself a number of months. Claudia studied alone, Naomi tried her best to help but worried daily. It was only when Micaela made a full recovery that this changed. Her medics had done all they could, and she finally awoke, back in the flat in a matter of weeks. Now with both guardians eager to help her study did Claudia begin to improve her work and mood. Not without struggles with her health, Micaela began to wish to spend more time with Naomi now that she was well. With their charge seemingly happier, they redirected her work into the upcoming exam to secure her place in her second year.

Juliette had the strange feeling that she was watching her own life pass by without really experiencing it. Days passed like a blink, weeks disappeared before she could fully hold onto them, months were swallowed just as quickly as they came. Her parents tried to talk to her and her younger sister, Clementine, hugged her with tears in her eyes, but it was as if Juliette was watching her own life through a very blurry lens. None of it had felt real or permanent since the accident.

Fragments of that day and fragments of the days before flashed by her eyes like a movie reel. She could still smell the burning metal, could still hear the screeching of tires as the car horn honked and her father tried desperately to swerve out of the way. She could still feel the pain on her forehead as she hit her head hard enough to fall into unconsciousness. Ever since she'd woken up in that overly cold, glaringly bright hospital room and found out that her twin sister and younger brother didn't make it, Juliette hasn't felt like a person — just a fragment of one. Part of her believes she stopped living in its fullest sense the moment that car made contact with theirs, but her body still felt like surviving despite it all.

Her mother had come back from America for the funerals, deciding afterwards to stay in London indefinitely so they could heal as a family. What she'd failed to realise was that Juliette couldn't stomach looking at her without seeing an older version of herself — someone who left their family behind for fame and fortune — reflected back at her. How was she to know how it truly felt to lose Lexie, to lose Nathaniel, when she didn't even know them? Her mother's presence wasn't helpful; it was a burden that made Juliette feel inexplicably worse.

The months passed and the summer crept ever closer, the thought of Hogwarts looming over her head like it was taunting her. Juliette didn't want to think about going back there, because everywhere she went, she would only be able to think about how she should've been doing it with Lexie by her side. They had only spent a month in the castle together before the universe had cruelly decided to rip her other half from her. Yet, when her father had cautiously asked about returning to her studies, claimed he thought it would do her some good, and Jules had seen the broken look on his face, she knew she had to at least try.

So, she was enrolled into a summer school program designed for helping students advance to the next year and for the first time since September, Juliette pulled out her textbooks, brushed the dust off them and sat down at her desk, trying desperately at making her brain do something that wasn't reliving the same day over and over again. Day after day, she studied every inch of every textbook, finding it a welcome distraction from the weight of her life as she worried about memorizing the incantations and etymologies for spells, the ingredients for potions, and the wand movements for transfigurations. She would pass the advancement exam when it came. If not for herself, for Lexie and Nathaniel, and maybe, just maybe, her second year at Hogwarts would help her feel like she could be something again.

The punishing fatigue of a slacker forced to work was a hell like no other, and yet hell hath no fury like a deadbeat scorned. The figure of a tired young man wobbled into frame, shoulders slumped and toes dragging against the stone-worked floor. Finally able to perform an escape from the dust-laden and leather-bound library. What seemed innocuous was, at first, in fact, a daring getaway, though at a snail's pace. The only preventative force that navigated Jack away from his arsonistic finale was the dread of a tongue-lashing from a Ravenclawed, martinet-like ex-girlfriend. The days upon weeks of extra schooling were like pulling teeth from a wild animal's maw. Still, even with his deeply ingrained hatred of sitting around with potions ingredient lists and tombs of history, Jack's determination to improve was a glimmer of hope. By no means was he the next Nicolas Flamel, but he was steadily improving.

However, no amount of browbeating or encouragement from others could dispel some of his darker thoughts that frequently resurfaced. These were not just fleeting moments of self-doubt, but rather, fragments of his time under the spell of the beast in his brain. Whether it was the shame of his past actions or his desperate desire for things to return to normal, those dark moments only pressed his nose deeper into his thickly bound and musty-smelling tomes of the library.

Every Saturday morning, Jack would wake with the sun shining in his eyes, and with a groggy stretch, the boy would dress himself in casual athletic shorts and a t-shirt before going on a decently early morning run. This routine, like a familiar melody, brought a sense of comfort against the now ever-present cold shoulders most of his peers had given him since his return. Like clockwork, as soon as Mr. Warren had managed to shower, dry, and clothe himself after the sweat-inducing run, a particularly rotund and depreptedly old owl by the name of Buttlesbey, whom Jack was still constantly surprised by the fact that the bowlingball-shaped bird could still fly, made his appearance. Under a wickedly sharp talon of the old owl was a large parcel of brown paper wrapped neatly with a coarse twine bow. His Mother, in her own doting but overbearing way, had been sending him supplementary books and handwritten worksheets to work as a secondary source of "edu-tainment" as she had so thoughtfully written in her first letter to him since his return. A neucence it was, but the package had never failed to bring a soft smile to his lips. He knew he couldn't fail with at least a few people pushing him forward. He was ready for the test to come, and for Jack to be held back wasn't exactly an option, because if not, the fear of repercussions from Dee and his Mother would be so much worse than any school-provided punishment.
