"Please, Hilda, Ah kin make room here, if y'wish tae sit. Ah wuz jest showin' Skraele the tapes fer me hands, when Ah'm a-boxin'. The way of wrappin' is a little complicated at first, as Skraele an' Bea hae seen, but nae too."
He gently unwraps Skraele's hands, rolling up the tapes and putting them away with a little relief that he hoped none of the others saw. They were barely a pound-and-a-half apiece, but he had no idea where or how he would get another set.
"Bea, here, were jest tellin' us about th' 'houses' at Hogwarts, and how they werenae real houses at all, but some sort o' internal organizin'. Ah hope . . . that Gryffindor might have room fer me, and are kind enow tae take me in."
He leans over a little, to tell a horrible secret.
"Ah'm Scots, as is Bea, here. Skraele is Irish. I hope ye nae hol' it agin us. Bea and Skraele are very nice, and probably m'first two friends, here, so please be nice tae them back, if ye will. I'd like . . . with yer permission, o'course . . . could I be yer friend, as well?"

Bea noticed that the new girl, Hilda, had brought a trunk with her. She cocked her head slightly. "Nice tae meet ye Hilda. Was the baggage compartment full? A'm sure we can get it put there?" The trunk in question was bulky, as all school students trunks were. Usually filled with brand new books and robes and whatever else caught a child fancy. Hers was filled with drawing equipment and another stash of rock candy. Nan had promised to send more in her weekly letters. Really Bea didn't mind it in the compartment, but she wondered if, when the train stopped, if it was safe to have it in a compartment full of students.
As Hilda took the seat next to her, she offered the girl some of her cherry rock candy. The girl had taken to looking out the window. A clear sign that she was nervous. Maybe if she felt that all of the others were friendly, she would open up. Like Mike. Tipping the jar up slightly to show the label, Bea nudged it in her direction. "Want some?"
On the mention of Mike, she noticed he had started to wind the tape up and grinned. "Can ye show me how tae box Mike? Could ye imagine little me boxin'?" She giggled at the thought. Turning again to Hilda, she asked, "Whaur ye from Hilda? Fit hoose do ye think ye'll be in?"

"Ah surely ken," he says to Bea. "Boxin's nae a matter o' size, and in fact, size hae advantages both ways. Taller give ye reach, and shorter makes yer target smaller. Jack Dempsey was a smaller man than you might hae thought! If yer wise . . . ye hae tae be wise tae box . . . ye ken anticipate yer opponent, and what he's liable tae do, and what he's liable tae throw, as far as punches."
He demonstrates a simple jab-jab-cross combination.
"See, it's speed that ken make a boxer great. Speed, and nae tae hae any fear o'yer opponent. Fear of yer opponent can make ye hesitate, can make ye retreat. Retreatin' . . . sometimes ye hae tae do it, but against someone bigger, you're retreating right intae his most-effective range, and that's nae good. Someone little, like ye -- I mean nae offense, Bea -- ye wanna be in close and tight, and work the inside. If we can stand a bit, I can show ye what I mean."
He stands up, and invites her to do the same, while demonstrating reach.
"See, back here, when the punch starts? Nae power. Out here, at full reach? 100% power. So, ye need to get in close, see?"

Placing what she hoped was an interested expression on her face, Hilda listened as the boy finished wrapping the redhead’s hands. At least he was doing something more interesting than the landscape outside and truthfully, Hilda was interested in the muggle sport. Well, in any sport really. Sure, boxing seemed more violent than some, but contact sports could get pretty rough. Take Quidditch for example, you could literally die by sliding off the back of your broom, a broken nose was nothing compared to that. She contemplated the redhead’s wrapped hands while the boy put the tape away in his bag. “..was the baggage compartment full? A'm sure we can get it put there?” The girl Bea was saying to her.
Hilda shrugged one shoulder and said, “It will be fine in the hall for now.” She didn’t want to have to squish them all in together with her trunk as well, that wouldn’t be fair. On the offer of candy, Hilda shook her head and softly replied, “No thank you, Bea.” She didn’t want to admit her stomach was already in knots, and the thought of food right then might cause her to be sick. Not that she had ever been sick in front of other people before, but one could never be too careful.
“Bea, here, were jest tellin' us about th' 'houses' at Hogwarts, and how they werenae real houses at all, but some sort o' internal organizin'. Ah hope . . . that Gryffindor might have room fer me, and are kind enow tae take me in.” Hilda smiled at him. He did seem nice and would surely love learning about the school. Before she could really ponder which house she was meant for, the boy had leant towards her. His pale eyes were on her as he confidingly told her they were nice, Bea and ‘Skraele’ (was that the redhead’s name?) and he would like to be her friend also. Hilda blinked; a bit taken back but the forwardness of him. Perhaps it was just his way to say what he thought, it was nice that he was so open about it, she supposed. But she still had no idea what to reply to that, so she just nodded her head.
Bea saved her by asking ‘Mike’, (and that must be the boys name) to show her how to box. The smaller girl’s giggle was constant, as though she found everything she had to say funny. Hilda liked that she had a sense of humour, but instead of relaxing her, every time she heard the ‘hehehe’s , she found her stomach tightening again. ‘They are nervous too Hilda, just try and talk to them..’ She encouraged herself.
Mike was now on his feet again, Hilda had pulled her legs up onto the seat in front of her and hugged her arms around them, watching intently as Mike jabbed for Bea. "Whaur ye from Hilda? Fit hoose do ye think ye'll be in?" Hilda swallowed and, chest heaving slightly, hoped her voice didn’t warble when she replied. “I'm from Essex, and I am happy for any house I suppose, whatever fits me best is fine with me.”
There... she’d said something… wasn’t so hard right?

"Essex? Really? Ah've read about th' Roman ruins there, and hae always wanted tae see them," says Mike, his eyes actually shining with interest. "I hear they're fascinating, and sae old! Everythin' old in Glasgow looks like sh . . . looks nasty and broken down. Hae you ever visited th' ruins?" he asks, hoping no one noticed his slip.
He sits down, and listens attentively to Hilda, his colourless gaze a little disconcerting.
"Ah've always had a secret fantasy, that Ah'd visit th' ruins, and find a hidden chamber, and in that chamber find an ancient Roman spell that naeone has e'er seen before, and that it would change th'world."
He looks down. "Ah mean . . . Ah know it's silly. Ah'm nae a very good student, and Ah've ne'er really e'en cast a spell, yet. Just an idle phantasm tae get me through lunch period, it was. And wantin' to see th' ruins. Do ye think that they had spells, the way we do? E'er since we saw th'movie about Julius Caesar, Ah wanted tae know if he was a wizard, like m'folks, and what sort o'wand he had, and so forth. Ah realize that, t'day, he wouldnae be allowed tae rule, if he was."

Doing a little catchup, no need to respond to these.
Skraele gave an empathetic smile at this. "Nothing to worry about there, Michael! Even if I had a sudden urge to chuck something out the window, I could never destroy art!" She giggles playfully.
"Nae, that's a lie. I do draw. I'm sorry I lied. I wasnae allowed to do drawin' at home. It was thrown away by m'classmates, and torn up by them. I . . . I was afraid ye'd do the same, but I shouldnae hae been. You both seem nicer than any others I remember. Please excuse me," he says, miserably...
He takes her hand gently in his, and starts to wrap the tape around the palm, and through the fingers, and around her wrists, until they're both wrapped.
"The tape feels good, actually. It's kinda comforting but makes me want to punch something at the same time."
His awkward behavior didn't even have time to register between the knock and him getting up to let the new person inside. He immediately, and without ceremony, drops Skraele's hand, and sits back down across from her.
The redhead offered her a warm, welcoming smile, but, for once, didn't say much, letting the other two have their moment to speak. Skraele was probably being too talkative until now as it was.“Ah.. my name is Hilda.” She said politely, and swiftly looked at the last student. A redhaired girl with bright green eyes and a face full of freckles. Hilda gave her a small smile too before quickly avoiding everyone’s gaze by looking out the window.
She rubbed her hands as the tape came off, their comforting grip missed already. He gently unwraps Skraele's hands, rolling up the tapes and putting them away with a little relief that he hoped none of the others saw. They were barely a pound-and-a-half apiece, but he had no idea where or how he would get another set.
She didn't know that the girl had been listening at the door. In Skraele's naïve nature, the possibility would never even occur to her. "Oh, I hope we're all in the same house! That would be sweet! But, ya never know with the sorting hat. Where it puts ya could be destiny as much as personality, I'm guessing? OH! I'm Skraele by the way! I'm really bad at names, especially when I get wrapped up in everything going on. She gave a smiling wince and apologetic wave.Hilda swallowed and, chest heaving slightly, hoped her voice didn’t warble when she replied. “I'm from Essex, and I am happy for any house I suppose, whatever fits me best is fine with me.”
"Ohhh, I think he must have been! That would explain a lot really, wouldn't it? Makes you wonder how many of the greats were wizards! Surely not all of them though. I think it would be way cooler to do what they did without magic. What is Essex like anyway? I've barely been outside of London. I was just saying we should all visit during the Summer, and I don't think you're that far away!"And wantin' to see th' ruins. Do ye think that they had spells, the way we do? She brightens and her smile grows a little. She isn't thinking at the time about the complexities of summer visits, how short the holiday will actually be, and how little time that will mean for her grandparents and the friends she has outside of hogwarts.

Bea stood as Mike invited her to stand. Facing each other in the compartment, Bea stood facing the window and Mike as he taught her how to box. Her eyes were wide as she took it all in what Mike was saying. Something about Jack Dempsey and height. Who ever he was, it seemed he was good at boxing. She followed along with the moves Mike made, mirroring them and then looking at Mike to see if they were correct. She smiled as she did the moves. This was fun! She'd have to learn more and when Summer came around, she would have the upper hand over her sister Ella!
Skraele and Hilda were having a conversation about Essex and houses and all sorts of things. Even Mike had joined in about something Roman and Julius Ceaser. She really couldn't keep up... Nodding along, she chimed in. "Me Ma ken aboot Julius Ceaser. I agree, maun be a wizard. Fit, wi all his pouer." She turned to Hilda at the mention of Essex. "Ye should visit me farm in Ellon, in Scotland." She turned to the others, "It wad be fun to veesit awbody." At that, she executes another jab-jab-cross. "Gat ony mair moves Mike?"

@Skraele Valasse @Michael Ashen @Beatrice LangstrethThey were all so friendly. And all their questions seemed directed at her. Hilda swallowed a nervous lump in her throat and balled her still hidden hands into fists inside her bomber jacket. She could do this… though she wasn’t brave like her dad, she certainly knew she wouldn’t be hurt in this compartment with these nice people.
“Well .. ah .. the ruins of Colchester have muggle tours showing witch huntings, uh… I’m sure all the magic must be…” Her voice had gotten quieter as she spoke and so she raised it again. “It must be cleansed of all magic, curses broken and the like. If they allow muggles in there.” She recalled another tidbit her father had once told her and, she hoped with an interested expression, told them, “Apparently there are still dragon sightings there occasionally, which is just another lure for muggles to check out the place. They think its all a hoax, see?”
She wasn’t aware of the famous Julius Caesar coming to do battle there, and her lack of her own local knowledge made her feel foolish, but she agreed with Skraele and Bea. “I’m sure once we ... we get settled at Hogwarts we can look up if Caesar was a wizard, and who else from muggle history was .. as well.” As they spoke of the ruins, Bea was practicing the jabs Michael had shown her. She stopped now though and mentioned they should visit her farm in Ellon. Hilda had only left England to see Quidditch games with her father, in that you could say she was well travelled, but she only ever saw Quidditch Stadiums and had not done a lot of sight-seeing.
“What kind of .. of farm to do you have Bea?” She asked politely, hoping to direction the conversation away from herself a bit. In doing so she felt her fists unclench and she took a deep breath. Bea was doing another set of jabs and Hilda thought she looked pretty steady as she did so. Her feet were well planted at least and Hilda knew enough about throwing a punch to know you needed good balance.

"Bea, there aren't that many moves in boxing, honest. There're only the jab and the cross, which I hae shown ye, and then the hook and th'uppercut, which I hae not. The hook is this way . . ." he demonstrates, and his fist does actually hook in, sort of. "And th'uppercut is this way," he says, and shows her.
