Saying Good Night to @Simon Kincaid
Hillary's tags jangled from the lower bunk. It caught their attention immediately and she knew in an instant they were thinking the same thing -- that someone may be coming. AngelFyre then heard her gentle giant yawn and stretch out on the bunk below and she relaxed. Hillary had only been repositioning herself. No one was coming, but sadly, she knew it had to be close to their 1 a.m. deadline.
As Simon put the vial back in his bag, he attempted to reassure her while never directly addressing those concerns regarding his appetite. He was not rude or dismissive of her concerns in any way, but there was a definite granite edge in his tone and a matter-of-factness to his whole demeanor that screamed his mind was set on that topic and he would not be swayed. Fair enough. He at least knew it was a concern of hers for him, but she vowed to herself not to bring it up to him again. No point in distressing him unnecessarily.
She watched him as he busied himself and a small, sad smile crossed her face. She could see he was deep in thought and the subject brought him no joy. She wanted so badly to be able to push past his stubborness and help in some way...in any way she could... but she recognized this was something he had to work through on his own. At least for now. All she could do at this point was love him through it.
Still, it brought up for her again the thought of future children. AngelFyre was so clear that she loved this boy more than her life itself, so it was distressing to know that there was so much of himself which he did not like, let alone love. How would those feelings manifest or change when he had the family he so longed to have? Would they change? Surely he knew he would be passing on his dhampir traits to his own children? Would he see them as monsters? Yes, the traits would be diluted, but they would be there. AngelFyre simply could not imagine Simon seeing his own children as he saw himself, or denying them anything they may need, so it truly did break something in her to know he would do it to himself.
She watched him read the quote, and her heart just overflowed with everything she felt for him in those moments. How he managed to put up with her she really did not know, but she thanked God every day that he did. She smiled at him when he placed his hand on the side of her face, and she reached up to briefly cover his hand with her own. In a low whisper she told him, "I am really glad you are here, Simon," and she then brought his hand to her lips and kissed his palm.
Laughing softly as he stated he did not want her parents upset with him, she happily found herself still thrilling to his every touch as he so easily pulled her into his arms from the upper bunk. One of the very best things about her debonair dhampir was his dhampir strength. There was just something so primally attractive about it.
"Fair enough. Neither do I," she sighed. Then wrapping her arms around him tightly, she snuggled into his neck for the last time that evening, wishing for the millionth time not to have to part from him. Love could feel so wonderful and hurt so badly at the same time.
Peeling herself away but reaching for his hand, she looked over her shoulder and called to Hillary, "Come on, girl. Home!" Hillary barked loudly once, tail happily wagging as she jumped off the bunk. She hurried to the door, looking back at the both of them curiously, making certain they were following. AngelFyre had to laugh. "We are coming. We are coming. Go!"
**************
They entered the house through Simon's veranda doors. AngelFyre half expected her father to be waiting for them, but was relieved to find he was not there. Lifting Simon's hand so she could look at his watch, she smiled in a most satisfied manner as she declared, "Good on us. A whole minute to spare." Looking around the room, desperately trying to think of anything that would prolong the inevitable, she shrugged her shoulders and looked up at him.
"I guess this is good night, then. You would think as often as we have to say good night it would get easier, but it just does not. I hate it every time." She placed one hand on his shoulder and the other just behind his ear, in his luxuriously soft hair, pulling his head down to meet hers while she lifted up to press her lips to his, first in a short, soft kiss and then in a much longer, sweeter one. When they pulled away from each other, their eyes locked to the other's and their fixed gaze remained unbroken as AngelFyre slowly backed herself to the door.
"Good night, my love. See you in a few hours. And if you did bring your guitar, feel free to play it. It will disturb no one."

A new day with @AngelFyre McCubbin

The two departed ways for that evening, AngelFyre back to her bedroom which he had yet to see and Simon back to the guest room. Once there, he remained only a couple of minutes, changing into his plaid black and yellow Hufflepuff pride colored flannel pants and a black t-shirt for bed, then left out of the room to brush his teeth for the night. Then he thought of something and went back to the guest room but only for a moment to grab something. With it in hand, he made his way back through the darkened house and back to the treehouse. Once inside, he made his way over to the treehouse extension of the McCubbin Telephone & Soup Line Co. and picked up the can.
"Hello?" he said in a low voice and waited a moment. "Hello? I'm attempting to reach a Miss AngelFyre McCubbin," he said as if he had to be patched through or something. "Wishing you the best of goodnights," he said into the can and hoped that she was close enough to hear him. He then propped up the can and sat down on one of the seats that could open up for storage and began to play a lullaby for her with his guitar.
When he had finished, he set down his guitar and picked back up the soup can. "Goodnight, goodnight. Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say goodnight till it be morrow," he quoted Romeo and Juliet and then placed the can back into place and made his way back into the house quietly, so not to disturb anyone including Hillary.
******
The sun did rise and a new day began and Simon took in his shower at the early morning hours and got ready for the day. When all finished, he remained in the Guest Room because he wasn't sure where else he should go but he did leave the door open so that AngelFyre knew he was awake but also in case anyone should need him for anything.
If her mother would wake to make breakfast, he would come out to offer to assist if he heard her or if he heard another unfamiliar voice he might peek his head out and introduce himself if he thought it was the infamous Grandma Ruth. Other than the exceptions, he would lay along the bed and read from his F. Scott Fitzgerald book.

Grandma Ruth Meets @Simon Kincaid
Sitting in the middle of her bed, in the dark, with just the hint of slender moonbeams spotlighting the area just inside her windows, AngelFyre looked out at her treehouse. She had done this more times than she could count, but on this early, early morning, the affection for one of her favorite places grew tenfold because it had now been shared with her very favorite person. Sitting cross-legged, holding a pillow to her chest, and petting the giant lying next to her, she still could not believe that Simon was really in the guest suite and that she would get to see him again in just a few hours.
She was just about to stretch out when a flash of movement caught her eye. Leaping up and moving to the window, she looked out to see Simon making his way back to the treehouse, and it looked as if he was carrying his guitar. Her immediate thought was that he really had been serious about going out there so that they could talk all night long, and as usually happened because of him, she could feel her smile was going to be the kind of smile that would ultimately make her cheeks hurt. Worth it every day of the week and twice on Sundays!
He did not turn on the lights and she knew he did not need them anyway. She watched carefully for any sign of him or movement within, but she did not have his Dhampir eyes. Sadly, she saw nothing but she could hear him. She grabbed the can off the ledge and turned her back to the window and sank down to the floor. "Hello? Hello? I'm attempting to reach a Miss AngelFyre McCubbin. Wishing you the best of goodnights," he said, and then he started playing a beautifully soothing piece for her on his guitar. She sat there with the can to her ear, silently smile-crying through the whole thing. Then he ended with a Romeo and Juliet balcony scene quote, and she was honestly dealing once again with a lump in her throat. He knew her well enough by now that she suspected... hoped... he knew this would be exactly the kind of thing that would make her happy cry, so all she could think to do was to tap out in Morse code on the top of the can...'Beautiful. Thank you. I love you.''.
Morse code was no longer in fashion, she knew, but she hoped that her inquisitive, oft wide-awake dhampir boyfriend might have either studied it on his own or maybe even learned it in Boy Scouts. Either way, it was all she could manage without sobbing in the poor boy's ears.-... . .- ..- - .. ..-. ..- .-.. .-.-.- / - .... .- -. -.- / -.-- --- ..- .-.-.- / .. / .-.. --- ...- . / -.-- --- ..- .-.-.-
As she watched him make his way back to his guest suite, she prayed her heartfelt thanks for the miraculous gift of Simon Kincaid.
************
Hillary raced downstairs and straight into the kitchen where she would do two laps around the kitchen island before running to the French doors that opened out to the patio off of the large family room. Her nails were always kept trimmed, but they nonetheless clicked and clacked loudly on the tile floor. She was a big beast. Nothing she did was ever really quiet, but she had a surprising self-awareness of the space she took up. Mornings were a happy time for her because she knew Grandma Ruth would be out on the patio and would bestow upon her a ton of affection.... and treats of bacon. Then she would wander the property until AngelFyre called her back in for her breakfast. This morning was a bit of an exception, however.
Hillary beat AngelFyre down the stairs as she always did, and AngelFyre could hear the clicking and the clacking of her nails, but instead of lapping the island, she headed straight down the hallway to Simon's guest suite. AngelFyre was shocked, but happily so. She knew Simon would likely be awake, but she did not expect that he would have left his door open because she saw Hillary nose it open unceremoniously and invite herself in at great speed. She was just about at his double doors when she heard a few excitable "Whoa, girl! Whoa! Wh-" and then the unmistakable sound of the gentle giant jumping up in bed with him. Ugggggh. AngelFyre arrived just in time to see Hillary in the middle of his bed, butt up in the air, tail wagging like crazy while her head and torso were bowing low. She was inviting him to play. AngelFyre knew this was very bad canine manners, but she did have to purse her lips together hard to suppress a smile.
"Hillary! Down!" Casting an embarrassed and an apologetic look to Simon, she pointed her index finger to the floor, and Hillary complied by leaping effortlessly over Simon and off of the bed. She did get the last word, however, by turning back around to him and barking once, loudly but playfully. "I am so sorry. She has never acted like this with a guest before. She really likes you," and AngelFyre could not help but smile now. Still, she knew while Simon did not necessarily dislike animals, he probably did not appreciate having them just leap onto his bed space either. "You rate pretty high in her estimation, let me tell you. Her routine is to go out to the patio to get bacon treats from Grandma Ruth, so point to Simon Ezra Kincaid for winning over my soul twin." Walking over and commanding Hillary to sit, she leaned down and kissed his lips while looking playfully into his eyes. "Come on. Now we get to see if you can so easily win over my Grandma Ruth. I believe the odds are quite heavily in your favor."
******
Passing through the kitchen, AngelFyre grabbed some orange juice and a glass of water for Simon. She knew there were be foodstuffs outside, so she did not offer him anything at that point. Opening the French doors, Hillary calmly made her way out and directly over to Grandma Ruth, who was sitting and reading her paper. AngelFyre took Simon's hand and stepped out with him onto the patio, her heart racing in gleeful anticipation. Grandma Ruth took a couple of bacon strips and gave them to a well mannered Hillary. With her morning business transaction with Hillary now completed, she turned her gaze to AngelFyre and the boy she had heard so much about. "Well, you told me he was a handsome fellow, but this handsome I could never have imagined, my sweet girl," and she kind of cackled a bit as her head and her hands shook with tiny little tremors as she set her paper down.
Looking to him immediately and smiling proudly while probably fixing her doe-eyed gaze upon him, AngelFyre replied, "Well, honestly Grandma Ruth, who could do justice to this," and AngelFyre motioned with her free hand, moving it up and down in front of Simon, "with mere words?" and then she laughed happily because she knew if their exchange embarrassed Simon, it would be very minor. He was not vain, but he knew he was an Adonis and did not shy away from that fact.
Then squeezing his hand, she made the introductions. "Grandma Ruth, this is Simon Ezra Kincaid. He may not know know this about himself, but he is even prettier on the inside than he is on the outside, and as you have already noted, that is really saying something." Now that she expected might embarrass him a little, but she could not help bragging on him. He really was wonderful and she wanted everyone to know it. AngelFyre laughed when she saw Grandma Ruth's merry blue eyes sparkle and she mouthed a silent 'Oh, indeed!' Then she turned to Simon and said, "Simon, love, this is Ruth Mae Godshall, properly known as my most beloved Grandma Ruth. She is a force of nature, but you will soon learn that about her for yourself, I am sure."

It seems @AngelFyre McCubbin, that Hillary still wants all the attention
He followed AngelFyre, hand in hand, out to the back patio area which was nicely shaded from the morning sun and introduced him to one of the most special people in her life. "She flatters me too much," Simon said of his girlfriend's praises and squeezed her hand, indicating he sadly would be letting it go momentarily and then looked to the woman, who already seemed kind just judging from her face - not the way her face looked, although that did in itself, but the way her eyes lit up. He could tell she was a kind soul just from the eyes alone. "Then again, she's always spoken highly of you and our AngelFyre isn't a liar. I don't think she could lie to save her life if she tried."
He then brought his hand out to AngelFyre's grandmother who she truly spoke so highly of and formally introduced himself. "Pleasure to meet you, - Ms. Godshall." There was a slim hesitation there because he wanted to get it correct but at the same time he didn't know if he'd call her that or address her by Grandma Ruth. It was probably best to venture the formality route first than to assume he could call her by a more personal nickname. "I've been compared to your Ezra many times and have been lead to believe that must mean we automatically have a fondness for one another," he said as Hillary came up toward him and wagged her tail. Simon didn't have any bacon to give her and she didn't seem to want that from him, just some attention and he reached his other hand out to pat her head gently a couple of times which caused her to wag her tail.
Simon really wasn't sure what else to say or do from here. Family settings didn't make him uncomfortable by any means and he liked to get to know new people, but he really didn't know how to approach family sorts of situations. He glanced back in towards the house and saw her parents in the kitchen and gave a small smile and a wave out to them to acknowledge them and sort of silently wish them a good morning.

A Whole Lotta Winking Going On With @Simon Kincaid and Grandma Ruth
"Oh Heavens to Murgatroyd! We shall have none of that Mrs. Godshall business,” she said most dramatically, raising her right arm to the heavens with a fist while shaking her head rapidly. Then, sitting back in her comfortably cushioned chair, she smiled most delightedly at Simon and informed him that, “Mrs. Godshall was my Ezra’s mother and my mother-in-law from Hel,” and almost instantaneously AngelFyre quickly and loudly interjected “Grandma Ruth!", semi-glaring at her elder with a big smile breaking out across her face.
“Oh poop! The boy is 13 years," and then she cocked her head and leaned closer to the edge of the table where Simon was standing and confirmed, “You are 13, correct?” Simon nodded, and was grinning, and looked as if he was about to say something but he would learn that you had to be quick around AngelFyre’s spitfire of a grandmother. AngelFyre just stood by, smiling deeply at the whole exchange.
Grandma Ruth leaned back in her chair again and went on, “As I was saying, the boy is 13 years old and was, by all accounts, not raised in a monastery, so it’s a fair bet that he has heard the word H-E-L-L before, my darling girl, or does he have virgin ears? And just so we are clear, even if he had been raised in a monastery, he most assuredly would have heard the word H-E-L-L there as those fellows are consumed with the idea of spending their lives trying to avoid the place.”
Pausing just long enough to let a little smile curl her lips, she winked at AngelFyre and continued, directing her attention to Simon. “So, back to my Ezra’s mother. Not a nice woman as I’m sure you’ve gathered by now, so please, I would like it if you would also call me Grandma Ruth. If that is too friendly for you as we just met, I will settle for Ruth, but if it makes any kind of difference to you, our darling girl’s friends, Ainsley and Kendric, both call me Grandma Ruth, but I leave the choice to you.” Then she motioned for them both to sit down.
As Simon pulled her chair out for her, AngelFyre looked up and beamed at him and he winked at her as he ran one hand quickly down the length of her hair. She knew right then he liked Grandma Ruth.
As he was taking his place between them at the table, AngelFyre looked to her Grandma Ruth and stated, “Well, someone is full of P&V this morning, I see,” and she laughed as she reached for a plate and a couple of bacon strips as well as a buttery croissant. She turned to ask Simon if he wanted anything, and she did not want to pressure him in any way whatsoever about food, but had she not asked him, that would have drawn even more attention to his eating habits. He had a slightly confused look on his face and at first AngelFyre thought it was due to her offer of food, and then it hit her.
“Ahhh. Yes. Sorry. You will catch on to the lingo around here soon enough, but for now, what you need to know is that my beloved Grandma Ruth is full of salty language so P&V is the sanitized version I am allowed to say for,” and she made a small flourish of her hand towards her Grandma Ruth who finished the sentence with a very self-satisfied, “Piss and vinegar, my dear Simon. Piss and vinegar! Elixir of the Gods!” And then Grandma Ruth winked at Simon and slammed down her pineapple juice.
"So, dear boy, our darling girl there has talked of nothing but you for days and days, and every letter we receive from her is Simon this and Simon that. So what I want to hear from you is something completely brand new; something that even our girl here doesn’t know. Anything at all, big or small.”
AngelFyre gave a very hungry Hillary another strip of bacon and quietly told her, "Soon, girl.” Ohhhhh, good question, Grandma Ruth. AngelFyre knew she needed to feed her gentle giant, but nothing was going to drag her away until Simon answered, even if it meant the dog got every strip of bacon on that table.

A Wizard Meets the Parents

A wizard meets @AngelFyre McCubbin's Grandma Ruth
Grandma Ruth, as he would do his best to call her since Ms. Godshall was not preferred, presented him with quite a difficult task. He looked over to AngelFyre and wondered what had he NOT told her on their countless nights sitting up late in the Hufflepuff Common Room. It seemed as he deprived her of sleepless hours that he usually talked her ear off, not that she seemed to mind. She had once told him that listening to his voice alone calmed her.
"Something my girl does not know..." he spoke softly while he gave himself a moment to think and allowed those present to know he wasn't ignoring it and had accepted the task but needed a moment.
AngelFyre already knew that his mother had gone to Hogwarts and was placed in the house of Gryffindor. She already knew that he didn't know his father and hadn't known a name up until the past Summer. She had known about the slow letters between them that had been sent and hopefully received, perhaps even one day returned once again. She knew about his Aunt Maggie and all about her.
She knew he was involved in the youth choir at Church and did a lot of volunteering and spent much of his time there. She knew of Gabe and Oliver and Lily and Olivia and Charlotte and Henry and all the other muggle friends he had back in London which he spoke of in his memories or mentioned a recent letter between them.
AngelFyre knew he was also involved at choir in school and also theater. She knew that he missed such things while at Hogwarts. She knew he played squash for his school's team which was very similar to raquetball. She knew that he played hockey throughout his childhood and could skate well. There was another sport the participated in though and he hadn't brought it up yet.
A memory of his childhood sparked and he smiled. This was sort of silly, but perhaps still worth sharing. "I swim," he announced. Now many people did unless they had a fear of water, usually brought on by some traumatic experience in their early years, but he didn't just mean basic swimming. "I did competition swimming with a local rec center for quite awhile but not long before receiving my letter to Hogwarts I was told I'd have to start shaving my legs to gain a more streamlined sensation in the water and slightly reduce frictional drag. I knew the hair on my head would be next and - I uh - might be a little overly attached to that as well."
He loved swimming, it was just much of it was done outdoors and that caused some complications for him. Water reflected sunlight and meant most times he could only do so for a short time, but he still did at nearly every opportunity he could. That's why competition swimming had been so great, they were always held at regulation sized indoor pools.
"Let's see what else... Well - she knows my favorite colors are dark blue and gold. She knows every single one of my tendencies from my tapping my quill while I'm studying or the nervous brushing the hair aside." He looked over to AngelFyre and could say hundreds more. She really knew nearly everything about him and maybe that's one of the reasons he felt so drawn to her. Perhaps they had only been dating a short while, but they already were so well connected.
"She knew I attended a lot of orchestra and symphony performances back in London but I might have failed to mentioned my sneaking in to the events to gain access. Quite wrong but Aunt Maggie's salary lets us live well comfortably but it doesn't always allow for extravagant extras. To my defense, and make me less of a criminal, I do always dress to look for opportunities to serve while I'm there - whether that is holding doors for others or helping an elderly gentleman get up the stairs. The ushers have actually grown to know me by name and I think by now they're on to me but I've won them over," he smiled widely. "Even saw Sir Elton John in concert that way."
He tried to think of something else. Three was a good well rounded number and there had to be something. "Uh, I don't think it's going to pan out now that I've got more options open to me in the world of magic but out of possible future career endeavors I always had my heart set on architect," he knew he hadn't mentioned that ever. It was a far jump from dragon trainer which might be his current endeavor, so he would think at this age. "I always found that to be mentally appealing and rewarding although I think being a religious leader might win out if I were not Catholic and our priests cannot marry. I can devote myself to God in many ways but I far imagine my future with a wife and many children so I cannot devote myself in that way."

@Simon Kincaid and AngelFyre McCubbin, Two Rebels With A Cause
Wow. Her fellow never ceased to amaze her, and AngelFyre loved that. Learning new things about him was really one of her favorite things to do. He had told her quite often that he was pretty much an open book to her already; that the pages had been well read and covered. Almost, but not quite apparently. She was simply delighted. She thought they might get a single offering, and it would be something like what side he sleeps on...when he does sleep...but he had given three pretty fantastic, mind-blowing answers.
Smiling from ear to ear, AngelFyre got up and moved behind his chair and locked her hands together on his chest while resting her chin on his head after planting a kiss on the top of his head. "Like you, I sure would have hated for this luscious head of hair to have been sacrificed for a sport, but boy oh boy would I have loved to see you compete." And then moving to the space between Simon and her Grandma Ruth, she knelt down and took Grandma Ruth's hand in her own. "That was a great question! Now, let us keep it to ourselves that I am head over heels for a "bad boy" dressed in choir robes. Mom and Dad may feel compelled to turn him over to the authorities, and then I should be forced to bake him a cake with a file in it, and well, I think we can all agree that there is just no good ending for anyone once we start down that path," and she laughed while turning her gaze back to Simon. "I am surprised, but I actually love, that there is a rebel spirit in you, Mr. Kincaid. We are well matched, Sir." And teasing him though she was, they both knew the truth of that statement already.
"So, I need to go feed Hillary, which will take me just about 5 minutes or so." AngelFyre looked up at the sky. It was a nice day, but a slightly overcast one, which was great. Their little party was still comfortably seated in the shade at this point, so she knew Simon would be fine. "How about you stay here with Grandma Ruth and get to know one another for a few more minutes and then when I am done, I can give you the house tour and the grounds tour. Who knows? There might be something you will see that will appeal to your architect spirit." and she smiled while shaking her head. "An architect. Wow."
Turning back to Grandma Ruth she finished with, "Okay. I leave him in your capable care. Regale him with stories of how you got your private pilot's license and used to terrorize your neighbor's cattle. Ha! Then you can ask him about how he currently thinks he may want to be a DRAGON tamer." Grandma Ruth's eyes flashed a shadow of momentary concern upon hearing that news, but then it became obvious that the prospect was quite interesting to her. " A dragon tamer, eh? Tell me, Simon, why would one even want to tame a dragon?"
*****
As AngelFyre went back into the kitchen to feed Hillary, she greeted her parents who were deep in conversation. It was the kind of conversation that came to an abrupt halt when she entered. She normally would have chewed on why they had stopped so abruptly, but she was too happy at that moment. Her Fab Four were all with her and life could not be more perfect. Until.
Gathering everything together to feed Hillary, her mother and father stood at the opposite side of the island, looking at her quite soberly. Her father was about to speak, but her mother rushed to speak first and asked if she and Simon had had their breakfasts yet? "I will be happy to fix you both anything you like, sweetheart," and while she smiled at AngelFyre, she kept shooting furtive glances at her father. AngelFyre thanked her mother and answered that they had eaten out on the patio with Grandma Ruth, when she also happened to notice that her father was twiddling his thumbs. Sigh. That always meant there was something he felt he had to say but did not want to say. AngelFyre grabbed Hillary's bowl and walked it over to the French doors and called to Hillary, who wasted no time in running over to get her late breakfast. As she was getting Hillary settled, she smiled as she heard a snippet of Simon talking with Grandma Ruth about dragons. The boy was simply crazy about dragons.
Closing the door and leaving the two to continue talking and Hillary to eat, she turned around and walked back towards her parents. "Okay. You two are acting very strangely. Did something happen? Are the horses okay? Did I forget one of my chores? No, I know that is not it." And she silenced herself as she walked over to one of the kitchen chairs and sat down, waiting to hear what her father needed to say. The thought just never occurred to her that the subject he would want to address would be the nature of her relationship with Simon, but she was about to find out. They both were.
Her father took a deep breath and let it out slowly before walking over to the table and seating himself across from her. Her mother followed him, but AngelFyre could plainly see this was one of the rare times when the two were not in 100% agreement with whatever it was that was about to take place. It was then that AngelFyre started to feel her heart migrating towards her stomach, and she just knew her happiness balloon was about to be popped. "Sweetheart, if Simon is finished with his breakfast, we," and he looked over to his wife and then corrected himself, "I would like to speak to the both of you before we lose track of the morning. Would you like to go get him, please?"
"I will get him, Daddy, but did I... did we... do something wrong? We got back into the house at 12:59 this morning, as I promised we would. I know you were not there to see us come - " but her father interjected before she could finish, "No. No, AngelFyre. I am aware that you both lived up to your bargain. I have no complaints there. Please, sweetheart, just get Simon and then everyone will know what is happening here. If he is still eating, that is fine. Do not rush him. Just bring him in when he is done."
*****
When AngelFyre approached Simon, his back was to her, but Grandma Ruth could see her confusion and worry written all over her face. She and Simon had been laughing and having quite a good time it would seem, but Grandma Ruth's face was now changed; no longer relaxed and joyful. Now there was just a very sobering look of resignation and she punctuated that with a deep sigh. What is going on here? Why is everyone acting so strangely?
Before she could even say his name, Simon was already turning to look at her. He had to have noticed the change in Grandma Ruth's demeanor, too, and was now looking to an equally confused AngelFyre for some answers himself. "Simon, if you are at a point where you can break away, my father would like to speak to us, please."
Looking a bit confused, Simon said,"Yeah. Sure." As he was pushing his chair back to stand up, Grandma Ruth reached over to take his hand and she motioned for AngelFyre to come over as well. "Simon Ezra Kincaid, it has been a great pleasure to meet you. All that my darling granddaughter has said of you is true, and I cannot imagine she could have found a finer young gentleman to bring home. I look forward to getting to know you better these next few days," and with that she smiled broadly, squeezed both of their hands, and then kissed AngelFyre's.
"Now scoot, the both of you. Don't keep Iain waiting."
AngelFyre quickly leaned over and gave her Grandma Ruth a long hug, blinking back tears. Whispering in her ear after kissing her cheek, she felt reassured when stating, "I told you he was wonderful. I knew you would like him, and one day I know you will love him, not because I do, though you know I do, but based on his own merits, of which there are millions."
Then releasing the embrace, AngelFyre quickly turned back to Simon, smiling reassuringly while reaching for his hand. It was a given. It was their default position. Hand in hand. Walking with him to face who knew what together, she stopped a few steps before entering. Looking directly into her favorite pair of eyes, she told him simply but firmly. "I have an inkling of what we might be facing in there. It will not change how I feel about you or my desire to be with you. I love you. Promise me you will remember that?" and then she tip-toed up to kiss his cheek before they turned to enter the lion's den.

Wavering concern and growing confidence with @AngelFyre McCubbin
He departed from Grandma Ruth feeling better for have meeting her but apprehensive over AngelFyre's concern. That apprehension only grew when she made her quick statement before entering the house. This didn't sound just like a 'what we're going to do today' sort of speech and his thoughts quickly went to two possible scenarios: one, that they found out he was a dhampir somehow or two, they didn't like the person he was and didn't want him to be dating their daughter.
He watched her, probably that open book right now of confusion as his eyes searched hers for some sort of unspoken answer but he unfortunately didn't receive it. He gave her a slow nod and squeezed her hand softly in response to her words and then knew that whatever was going to be said was unavoidable and he wouldn't place AngelFyre in a current position of opposing her parents so running wasn't an option, even though there were wide open spaces around them to do so.
Simon would keep hold of that hand as the two entered the house and he would push his concern aside and be strong for her - whether whatever they were about to face would be big or small. "Good morning, Mrs. McCubbin. Good morning, Mr. McCubbin," he said and greeted them with a smile. Normally he might have said something about how the guest room was great but he didn't want to sound like he was buttering them up.
Glancing around the kitchen, he saw that the windows were still slightly pulled open to allow a little bit of sunlight to filter in. Usually when sunlight was filtered through windows, it didn't bother him so much, and the fact that they had them open a little wasn't a problem to him - in fact, it gave him a little bit of reassurance that they still probably didn't know that dhampirs existed, let alone that he was one of them. One worry had dissipated.
Now did it just mean that they didn't like the person he was and didn't want him dating their daughter? Simon didn't think he had given them any reason not to like him. He had been polite, dressed well, been respectful. Even his touchy feely nature was just his normal so he didn't think he had crossed any boundaries.
Knowing that he was usually pretty likeable, even among teachers back at his muggle school that barely liked anyone, he squeezed AngelFyre's hand one more time and glanced over to her with another smile, this one small, but it rose to his eyes. His concern was dwindling further and whatever was the topic of this conversation, he was done thinking the worst. "AngelFyre said you'd like to speak with us?"

You Have Already Met @Simon Kincaid. Now Meet SimFyre.
AngelFyre was feeling like a showdown was imminent, and because of this, her feelings were knotting and twisting up in ways she had not experienced before. She knew well what her father was capable of here. He had exiled her to a girls only boarding school in Edinburgh the year before she had received her Hogwarts letter and visit from the Professor, all because a boy had kissed her. It did not matter that she had not kissed the boy back. Her father had made up his mind on the matter at the time and he would not be moved. AngelFyre had been broken-hearted at the time, for obvious reasons, but mostly because she felt her normally reasonable father simply would not hear her side of the story. She knew without a doubt her father had only done what he thought best for her, but it uprooted her whole world and took her away from everyone and everything most precious to her. She had tried valiantly to dissuade him from the decision, but it had been no use.
At that time, it never occurred to AngelFyre to rebel or make trouble for herself or her parents. She had been raised well. She knew to be respectful to her elders. She knew she was well loved above anyone in the world in her parents' eyes, so it was not a punishment they had inflicted upon her. It was just an exile that was meant to be for her own good. But it shut her down in some ways; closed off parts of herself that were only recently seeing the light of day again. And ironic as it was in many ways, it was Simon who had unshuttered her shadowed self to let her light shine again.
Looking at her father now, loving him as desperately as she always had and always would, AngelFyre knew, sadly, that this time was going to be different. She could feel the steel hardening in her spine. She would not simply acquiesce as easily as she had done the first time. That would be impossible. Everything... everything... was different now. Her heart was not her own any longer. It was Simon's, and anywhere he went, he carried it with him. And in that very moment, he squeezed her hand.
AngelFyre turned to him and was mildly surprised to see a small smile of encouragement. It was not emitting his normal klieg light wattage, but the spark of hope she saw was not in his smile anyway. It was in his beautiful golden brown eyes. In that moment, relief washed over her and she knew her father was going to be facing off with a team and not just one obedient daughter or two individual kids. She well recognized it did not mean they would be victorious, but they would not be standing alone against a formidable foe.
**********
Iain McCubbin exhaled deeply, but silently, as he watched the two youngsters, make their way to the house for the discussion. Before even stepping over the threshold, he watched as his still 11 year old daughter turned to her beau and kissed him on the cheek. They entered with their hands locked together, both looking like they were about to face a one-man firing squad. Sadly, they were not wrong.
Iain McCubbin was taken aback a little when it was Simon who spoke up first, most confidently, and not AngelFyre. "Good morning, Mr. Kincaid. Yes. Yes, please. I do wish to speak with you. With both of you. I think we will all be more comfortable in the family room, however," and he got up from the kitchen chair
and placed his hand on the small of his wife's back as they headed to the family room.
AngelFyre and Simon dutifully followed, and as they walked, she turned to Simon and whispered, "This is not exactly the house tour I had in mind for you. I am sorry, love," and she smiled tenderly at him.Not surprisingly, Iain McCubbin escorted his wife to the sofa and gestured for AngelFyre and Simon to take their seats in the two cushioned chairs across from the sofa. A subtle, but obvious, divide and conquer stratagem, AngelFyre noted. "I could take an indirect route here, but I will not." Turning his gaze directly to his daughter, he continued "AngelFyre, it is obvious that you hold strong affections for Mr. Kincaid here and this is not an easy thing I am about to do, but I believe the nature of your relationship is light years ahead of where it should be for an 11 and 13 year old. I, we," and he looked briefly to his wife and took her hand in his, "heard your pleadings to allow you to have a boyfriend and against my better judgment, I agreed. I believe I made a mistake. You are not ready. I know you think you are. I imagine you both think you are, but I speak from the voice of experience. You are not. So, with the best interest for both of you at stake, I have decided that the boyfriend and girlfriend status comes to an end as of right now."
AngelFyre's father had been looking at his daughter pretty much throughout his whole pronouncement. He noted there were no tears. There was no anger. There was no outburst from her such as he had experienced after breaking the news to her that they would be sending her off to an all girls boarding school. She instead was sitting across from him in quite a calm state. Looking now to Simon he said "This is not personal, Mr. Kincaid. You do indeed seem like a fine young man and you are more than welcome to stay for the rest of your planned visit, but I want to see no more touching and definitely no more kissing between the two of you for the duration. I hope I have made myself clear?" and it was not Simon he was looking at just then, but AngelFyre.
"Yes, Sir. You have been very clear. And now I will be clear. The answer is no. I do not agree to the dissolution of my relationship on your say so alone." Her father had tossed down the metaphorical gauntlet with the expectation that his challenge would not be met. He was mistaken. For the very first time in her life, AngelFyre had picked it up in an act of open disobedience and defiance. And surprisingly, she felt calm. There were no tears threatening to spill over. Her throat was not constricting, forcing her to be silent as she would normally be laboring to breathe. She was strongly aware that she was currently embarking on the fight of her life, but she would not simply roll over and have Simon excised from her life. That was just an unacceptable situation to even contemplate. She knew what....and who.... she was fighting for here and getting emotional would not help her cause.
"Daddy, you cannot do this. How exactly do you expect to be able to enforce it? Are you going to be withdrawing me from Hogwarts? I am a witch. Do you honestly believe I could not find my way to him wherever you decide to place me? I am growing up. I am sorry about that, but it is happening, and it is happening even faster now because of my magic. You cannot watch me every minute of every day. At some point, you are going to have to trust me and the decisions I make." Then she looked over to Simon, and while their gaze remained locked, she spoke to all three of them at once. "Simon is not a mistake I, or even you, have made and any arbitrary age you pick for my being able to have a boyfriend is not going to change what is between us now. Please do not put me in a position to have to choose because I will choose Simon. Always."
Rising from her chair, she hurried over to her father and gave him a tight hug before sitting at his feet. "Daddy, you know how much I love and respect both you and Mom. I always have and I always will. But things really are different in my day-t0-day world. Hogwarts is different. I am not entirely certain you understand everything about where you sent me off to, but I will say this. It is a wonderful place, but it is also a dangerous place. And you need to know this. Students die there. Magic and magical creatures are no joke." At these last two statements, Iain and Annene McCubbin looked to each other and shifted uncomfortably at such news.
"This boy you want me to separate from is someone I know would throw himself in harm's way without a second thought in order to protect me from any danger. I know this because of his past actions. He did as much for his best friend the night they met. They were not even best friends at that point, and his primary thought was to protect her. If he was willing to do that for someone he did not yet know, do you not believe he would do the same for me? I know he would, and here is the thing, Daddy. I would do the very same for him." And at this point, AngelFyre finally did begin to feel the well of tears filling her eyes.
Reaching for her father's hand, she softened her tone a bit and offered a gentle chastisement. "It meant a lot to me to have Simon come here and see the place I love so much and meet the people that are my world. He has been polite and engaging, and all around wonderful. I gave him every reason to believe that you and Mom would love him. One of the reasons I love him so much is because he is so like you in all of the most important ways. You have other concerns going on right now and possibly cannot see the truth in that statement, but I see it." She swallowed and continued. "You have not been very welcoming to him, Daddy. You keep calling him Mr. Kincaid as if not acknowledging him by his first name would what? Make this plan of yours somewhat easier to execute because it is less personal? His name is Simon and it would mean everything to me if you would please use his name." And then she allowed a few of the tears to slide down her cheek.
Everyone sat in silence for a few seconds, and then her father leaned forward and brushed her tears away with his thumbs before kissing her forehead. "All right, lass. All right." He reached for her hand and helped her to her feet. Walking hand in hand with her over to Simon, who was quickly rising to his feet, Iain McCubbin offered his hand to Simon for a handshake and a restart of sorts. "Simon, you have my apologies if my behavior has been stiff and less than welcoming. I think my lass may have a point and I am sorry about that." Then looking between the two, he was still no less concerned about the physicality the two so easily displayed, so he decided on a different tack.
"Simon, how would you like to go on a motorcycle ride with me? I need to pick a few things up in Dunbar and it will be a good opportunity for you and I to get better acquainted. What say you, lad?"

A Wizard Meets the Parents

A date, of sorts, with @AngelFyre McCubbin's father
The formal situation of the four of them gathering into the Family Room and sitting in such a way indicated early on to him that something was wrong. Still, he would do his best to remain optimistic for AngelFyre because she needed a strong foundation here, not someone who would be showing their apprehension. Whatever obstacle they met here was one that they could conquer.
He half expected AngelFyre's father to lead with the no more touching or kissing. The physical relationship he had with AngelFyre was quite strong and the way the two gravitated and were magnetized together was prevalent from the start so Simon wasn't always aware of how often the two shared public displays of affection. He felt his eyes on the man in front of him, ready to give him respect as he said his speech.
What he didn't expect was to hear Mr. McCubbin make a decision for his daughter about the way she should be living her life. That didn't seem to be the way she was raised and Simon found it curious. Perhaps they were just intimidated because they didn't expect all this so soon, or they wanted to keep their little girl 'their little girl.' Simon knew they had tried to protect her from boys before but they had also raised their daughter to question the world, to seek understanding, to be true to herself. So why this?
Simon's eyes now diverted to AngelFyre because, yes, he might have lost a little of his respect for the man in the moment. Granted, he didn't know anything about fathers or fatherhood but this seemed to be overstepping boundaries.
AngelFyre then spoke up, defending herself to her father and defending their relationship. He didn't know if this would anger her father but he was prepared to step in if needed - knowing full well that if that happened, he probably would have unfortunately helped aid to destroying any chance at fond memories of this Spring Break but he would step in for her if needed.
She wasn't wrong in all that she said. Hogwarts could be a dangerous place and he would do everything to protect her. The more she spoke, the more his focus went back to Iain McCubbin because if any anger was to come from him, verbally or physically, he was going to intervene.
Instead, perhaps he saw the error or his ways because he silently tried to help calm his daughter down before helping her up. He then came to him, addressing him by his first name, and apologizing for his stiff behavior. Simon noted that he truly never did take back his words on their relationship but maybe that's because he didn't need to. AngelFyre wouldn't let him dissolve their relationship and therefore there was nothing to take pack. She wouldn't give him that power and good for her.
To his surprise, her father then invited him on a motorcycle ride to the neighboring town. Was this some sort of way to off him in some sort of proposed 'accident?' Simon smiled a little at the thought but knew, despite Iain McCubbin to be a strong adult man, that his dhampir strength and quick reflexes could outperform his own. He'd be safe.
Simon would trust that the man would try and allow his daughter to direct her own life a little more now that she spoke what needed to be said and reached out, taking the man's hand into his own for a firm handshake. "Dunbar, birthplace of John Muir," he said, tossing out one of his random facts of knowledge. "Also known as Sunny Dunny because it enjoys the most hours of sunshine of any town in Scotland. Please, if you don't mind, I'd like to grab a hooded sweatshirt and my sunglasses before we make the trip."
He didn't mind the sun, and maybe this would ease the McCubbin parents' statements earlier when waiting for his train to arrive to see that he wasn't a vampire - at least not wholly.
Simon looked over at AngelFyre and while his lips didn't rise to a smile, his eyes sort of held one. He was proud of her for standing up to her father because he knew how much she admired the man. It showed him how important their relationship was to her. Simon departed for a few minutes, disappearing to the Guest Room to gather up his things for the trip and to allow AngelFyre to speak any words with her parents that she might need to speak and he hoped there were only words of understanding and not criticism or a continuation of before.
With sweatshirt now on but sunglasses in the pocket, he returned to the Family Room. Her father wanted to see no more affection, but it was unavoidable. Even trying to be conscious of what he was doing and trying to respect her father's wishes, Simon found himself approaching AngelFyre and now giving her a smile as he placed his hand against her cheek and caressed it affectionately, thanking her for her defense moments earlier. He then reached down to take her hand and brought it to his lips, gently kissing the back of it. He'd give it one soft reassuring squeeze before letting go.
"And to Dunbar I go, to lose my mind and find my soul," he said, his smiling brightening more. It was a play on the well known John Muir quote: 'And into the forest I go, to lose my mind, and find my soul,' but he felt it was a good play on words for the situation at hand. He knew quite a few good quotes by John Muir, after all, he was a conversationalist and Simon was a scout.
Simon would follow AngelFyre's father out from the Family Room. Once the two were alone, Simon glanced over to him. "Should I say my piece or hold my peace?" he asked, smiling a little at his play on words there. Truly though, he was wondering if he should add in his say in the matter to try and reassure her father or if he should 'hold his peace' and be silent. He didn't want to be disrespectful in any way, but he also felt he should add in some of what was so valiantly said by his girlfriend. Besides, maybe her father wanted to hear Simon's thoughts on his relationship with his daughter and while it would never be so intelligently spoken as the way AngelFyre had with words, maybe he could convey at least the idea.
