After listening to Avery's optimistic words, Marius said nothing as he was unsure of how to reply, but nodded either way. The Slytherin had mentioned about keeping an open mind and being kind to everyone, and it was not that he disagreed with such nice statement. What disturbed the Hufflepuff was his own feeling that he had always been kind and accepting to most people, but on the other hand, many out there were not. Guess that meant his effort did not help the world much.

"Well, it would take more than just the two of us. At least... I think so," he finally spoke, but he was not sure whether it was the right thing to say. His words might hurt Avery's feelings since it could be perceived as something pessimistic, a total opposite of the musician's nature and preference; but Marius did not really consider this probability.

Avery then proceeded to tell his fellow first year about the Spider Curse stuff his senior Slytherin had informed him some time ago. The Hufflepuff was not much interested in the story, but he agreed that magic could be dangerous. "I think everything in this world is. Where there's beauty, there's danger; and when there's power, there's responsibility," said Marius. He said all of these without any intention of being perceived as wise or of showing off, and he did not even think he might be perceived so instead.

Despite having mentioned Simon several times earlier, the two boys never moved an inch closer to the birthday kid. Avery finally seemed to decide to simply wait for the Gryffindor to approach them, and the Hufflepuff felt it was not a bad idea. Shrugging it off, he said nothing more about congratulating the host.

Having eyes, but not seeing beauty; having ears, but not hearing music; having minds, but not perceiving truth; having hearts that are never moved and therefore never set on fire - these are the things to fear.

"Well, it would take more than just the two of us. At least... I think so," Marius said, with some hesitance. Avery thought about it. He could see what Marius meant. No two people could change the world through their kindness and charm, or alter the nature of discrimination and intergenerational purism by simply being kind and honorable people themselves, in hopes of shattering the beliefs of purists they encountered in their day-to-day lives. Avery also doubted his ability as an eleven-year-old to change the course of history and human though as a new muggle-born in a wizarding school with traditions hundreds of years old. What else could a boy like himself do against purism? It was all too difficult to think about. "Yes, it's definitely a group effort, and really a centuries-old problem, I think. I guess I don't really have answers myself on how else to solve this," he admitted.

True, what Marius said about danger was correct. Danger was everywhere and often unexpected, just as he noted in his sage-like observation, which he made without a hint of detectable nervousness at the implications of such dangers. At this point, Avery remembered what Ming often said about the magical world, to counter Avery's optimism that 'everything was fine': At least in the muggle world, kids weren't given wands that could set things on fire, or played with wands whose spells could backfire upon themselves. Kids did not play with poisonous concoctions during class, or get bitten by cursed spiders. Thinking about it again, perhaps Ming did have a point. "It's pretty easy for power to be in the wrong hands, though," he ventured forth, thinking about the likes of Hildegard Schneider, and the raw arcane power she wielded along with her wand and her pursim. "Everyone has a wand at school -- it's like giving everyone a knife," he chuckled as if the analogy were a joke, but then paused momentarily when he realized it was partially true. And that's one reason why was so important to learn how to wield magic himself, he supposed. "My parents sometimes think that I can just go back to muggle school if they wanted, so I can work hard and get into Oxford or someplace when I graduate from grade school, but after seeing everything, I really don't want to go back. It would be like choosing to live in ignorance," he mused. All his magical potential, wasted. All his ability to protect himself and reach his full potential as a wizard, gone.

He wasn't quite sure why he would share all this with Marius, but the boy somehow seemed to put him at ease in speaking his mind. Perhaps it also helped that Avery was a chatterbox, to some degree. He briefly wondered what Marius' own experience as a muggle-born was like, if the cursed spiders didn't even phase him.

He had finished his second slice of cake by now, and it didn't seem anyone else at the party noticed him dropping by. Perhaps it was just as well, considering the many crumbs he had from messy eating. "Anyways, nice to meet you, Marius," he said. "I need to drop off my violin and head to quidditch practice, but hopefully I'll see you around and in class, yeah?" It was nice chatting with Marius. He seemed like a pleasant boy, with a good head on his shoulders and a polite demeanor. With a nod, he excused himself and headed to the Snape Dormitory.

Marius nodded at Avery's mention of how easy it was to misuse power, and he nodded once again when the Slytherin compared wand with knife. The other boy laughed and Marius flashed out a small smile for the sake of politeness, but he much preferred it when Avery suddenly adapted a serious attitude regarding this. The Hufflepuff agreed fully with this comparison, and for him it was no laughing matter, for kids (that is, including preteens and teenagers) could act in accordance with the jungle's law. It was, clearly, incredibly dangerous.

After that, Avery mentioned about refusing to choose coming back to Muggle schools as he thought it would be like living in ignorance. Marius could not really say whether he agreed or disagreed with the Slytherin's opinion, so he decided to keep silence this time. What about living in the wizarding world, the Chinese-English boy thought, and turning a blind eye to Muggle's latest technology or what is currently happening there? Would it be different, or would it be exactly the same?

The Quidditch player gobbled up two slices of cake, and then excused himself to drop off his violin (presumably at his dorm) and proceed to sport practice. "It was nice chatting with you," said the Hufflepuff politely. Later, he himself would leave the party soon afterward.
