As the spells from the last round finished, Jake heard Dealla cursing in anger - but was she mad at Alec? Or herself? Although Dealla couldn't see it, the light from her wand was blinding the Gryffindor team. Looking across from the platform, they would have trouble seeing their opponents without shielding their eyes. Through the light, Jake (who had his own hand up over his forehead) saw Alec and Rose covering their eyes as they tried to make out their opponents. Though Jake couldn't see the expression on their faces he saw the way Alec lightly kicked the ground. Why was he upset about...they were winning weren't they?

Jake tried his best not to look directly into the light above the Ravenclaws (looking into the sun could burn your retinas, and what if magical light worked like that?), but he hoped that the distraction of Dealla's light would stop the talk that had been building. Maybe they'd forget all about the fighting...but to his surprise it was Samantha who spoke up next. The Ravenclaw girl's laughter had stopped, and even through the glare, Jake could see she looked absolutely furious. He had thought she was one of the good ones!

The duel had gotten out of control and Jake felt in over his head, because he didn't know how to stop it. He'd prepared for rule-breakers, not this. Rose had said it was passive-aggressive, and Jake didn't really know what that meant, but if this was passive-aggressive then what was aggressive-aggressive? He wanted to open his mouth but he couldn't find the words, or really speak at all. Freezing during a duel was the WORST thing he could do, because he was the one that had to enforce the rules. But then Samantha called Alec a 'little baby' just because Rose had healed him. Jake winced. He hated when other kids called people that word.

"H-hey! Guys c'mon that's enough stop fighting!" the words tumbled out of him, as he awkwardly watched the others, feeling very much like a faker, talking like he could actually make them stop. "P-please...?" the little Hufflepuff shuffled in place, feeling a sinking feeling in his chest, his cheeks flushing.

Would they even have heard him over the sounds of the duel? That was unclear, Jake's voice tended to be quiet and they may not have even noticed he'd spoken over the sounds of each other's words and barbs.

But despite the blinding light, everyone began to cast once again.

Taking advantage of the cover of light, Samantha would cast a blindfolding spell at Alec Mason. Perhaps she wanted him to get a taste of his team's own medicine, and see what Dealla was going through. But one thing was still clear - no matter how much Alec talked, he was still able to back it up. Even though he could barely see the spell coming he managed to dodge out of the way.

Unfortunately for Dealla, the blindfold still made her a target - and perhaps the light made her even MORE a target. It was hard for Alec and Rose to see, but it didn't stop them casting in her direction. Alec tried to make that wand leave her hand entirely, but Dealla was fast - one of the fastest duelers Jake had ever seen (though it was only his first real duel) - she quickly ducked out of the way of the disarming spell, but could not dodge two at once, and once again it was Rose that connected with a knockback spell, pushing Dealla backwards. Once again it would take all Dealla's agility to remain on her feet, but in the process, her concentration would break, the light fading and leaving spots in everybody's eyes as they began to adjust to the now normal lighting.

Jake could only imagine what Dealla's eyes were going to look like when that blindfold went off, as she raised her hand and removed it, perhaps knowing it was time to get serious here. Jake imagined it dramatically flying off to the side, like when somebody gets really serious in a movie. (He had to do a bit of imagination because his vision was still filled with spots and so he couldn't really see her face). But the spells were taking their effect on her, and she would sense that she was weakening. Alec's fits of laughter seemed to have stopped (at least the ones caused by the spell) and the Gryffindors were strong and confident. Would Dealla be able to have a last stand? Could the Ravenclaws rally?

And would they stop calling each other names?

This duel takes place during Day 1!

The Gryffindors' words were making less and less sense. Apparently being helped by Samantha when the Gryffindors were focusing all their spells on Dee was her dragging her team mate down, but Rose healing Alec because the Ravenclaws had picked him as their primary target was something completely different. The hypocrisy was glaring, almost screaming, yet they did not seem to be aware of this. Or maybe just ignoring it. Self-awareness was a skill they did not appear to possess (not that Dee did, but it was much easier to spot flaws in others than herself).

Dee rolled her eyes beneath her blindfold, but kept silent, trying to determine the best course of action - trying to anticipate when the spells would be coming, because she knew they would. It hadn't been a lie, their strategy was transparent. That didn't mean that it wasn't effective, however. They had to turn this duel around first, before she explained to Alec all the ways in which he was embarrassingly wrong.

The light streaming from her wand was abandoned as she focused on evading and getting rid of her blindfold, hoping that Samantha would take the opportunity to attack while their opponents were disoriented by the remainder of the light. Instinct had her ducking to the side while she reached up to undo the blindfold, and was it just her imagination, or could she feel a spell pass her by? The second one, however, she did not managed to dodge, and she gritted her teeth while she stumbled back, doing her best to not lose her balance. Without being able to anticipate the spell, bracing yourself was difficult.

Still, she was smiling when she finally got rid of the cloth covering her eyes. Not a friendly smile, but a sharp one, shining like broken glass pieces. "They talk a lot, but they still keep missing a blindfolded opponent," she said, not very loud, meant for Samantha rather than the Gryffindors. It was time to focus on themselves, they could gloat later. "They're getting arrogant. Stay focused. I think it's time to mix things up a little, don't you?"

Then, a little louder, she called, "Don't worry, Jake. Let them talk, we can handle their bad sportsmanship." Not a word for the Gryffindors this time, just a barely concealed sneer.

Today had been something the Gryffindor had been looking forward too for a long while. Duelling was an outlet for him, an incredibly helpful one. Especially last year. He'd had nothing to lean on. It was something he could look forward too, the practices had proved helpful in clearing his head. He'd had nothing else too help and he held a place for it even as he moved from being less and less attached and dependent on the sport.

It still helped with areas he needed help working on. It was able to take hold of his attention, and for someone who was so easily distracted, it helped to have something that would hone him to focus. Usually after practice he'd find himself studying as long as he hadn't been pushed out of the mood. It helped with coordination, and his clumsiness, he was acting less willfully ignorant of these areas of weakness. He still needed to do more. He needed to get stronger, and faster, better.

Alec readied his wand and cast at Dealla. He wanted to knock her wand away. It would help Rose, and really he needed too-“Expelliarmus!” He focused, there was no way she could dodge like that, with the way he'd aimed he was sure. Yet somehow she'd done it. He stared at her she was- she was- too good! She was an amazing opponent and he knew it. Right from the start, she'd shown her worthiness in their last duel. It was better to pretend he had ignorance in it. That he was better then her, that the chances of winning weren't equal. At that even if it was equal at all, Dealla was experienced. She took the experience and she melded it into something that she could use as a better weapon.

Alec was unable to deal with the fact that she was better then him. He had too much at stake to lose- not again, not when- He looked down to the side and at the ground. Clenching his left hand while he held his wand. Though he was barely hurt his expression, slightly pained, it seemed visible. His breath was shaky. He was unsure of what chance they had, but he couldn't let anybody else know that.

Instead he translated it into frustration and anger. It was much better then whatever else was going on right now. Dealla and Sam were just being pests. “argh-!” He let out a noise of frustration and turned. Moving out of the way just in time for Sam's spell to miss. At least Rose's had hit. He watched as the blindfold swerved past him, and something edged in him. “Shut up!” Heavy breathing, the heave of his chest going in and out could be clearly seen. “You don't get to talk like that. You haven't proven your any better then me. You act like speaking that way is any better. Or the fact that you were able to dodge one of my spells. One. This was the only spell that's missed.” Alec said, his voice was fast as he spoke, he was still frustrated and angry. He still had more, but he held his tongue, what was he proving by getting upset with her anyway.

He hadn't planned for duelling today to be something that fueled frustration, or anger or anything else. But there were people that were expecting things out of him, and he had to deliver.

It's clear she was scared anyway. She acted as if she's so high and mighty, but she's been the one to take the most hits. Of all the spells have have been cast, most of them have been hitting her. She talked a lot for someone who didn't have any ground to stand on. It was increasingly frustrating to deal with. Besides, how ignorant was Dealla? Alec and Rose weren't the ones being called out, it was clear the boy was reacting to Sam's words, even if it was generally directed at everybody.

On top of that, acting as if she had handed Alec and AJ their win in the last duel, with Pericles and her. She had knocked herself out, and that meant less work for Alec, but it was easy to tell that he could have done just the same to her in one spell. It wouldn't have mattered. Alec took a deep breath, he ran his hand through his hair, trying to move his curly locks away from his eyes. He turned to Rose. He laughed to her, it was a short laugh, one that seemed to be of relief. He managed a genuine smile her way. “That-that was great. You're doing so good. I missed but the way you hit made up for it. We'll win.” His cheering her on came in the form of an excited whisper, he seemed to want to be quick about it. Too much focus on her and they were going to miss the actual casting part of the duel.

He tried to ignore the repeat of his words, there was a lot going on at once and it caused him to be rather flustered under the pressure not wearing his game face.

When speaking to Rose all if the frustration and the anger that was a layer on top of many other things seemed to melt. Of course part of it had too. They wouldn't win a duel if he couldn't trust her.

Action: Doing what was/will be owled~

Samantha listened partly to what Jake was talking about. It was hard to hear him as he didn't talked that loud, but Samantha did hear his adorable 'please', which made her feel bad. No matter how annoying Alec was, she shouldn't fight with him. She should be the bigger man and ignore his words.

She didn't have much time to think about how she had to be the bigger man, as the next round of spells began. To her annoyance her spell missed Alec, again! Or she was awful at aiming, or he was really good at dodging. Samantha didn't like the idea of her being bad at anything, so she blamed the boy. He was to good at dodging. Samantha luckily didn't get hit by anything, but the same couldn't be said about her partner. Even though Dee had done an amazing job dodging one of the two spells fired at her, one of them still hit her.

Samantha gave a little smile when Dee told her about the other team missing a blindfolded opponent. "Yeah, mixing it up sounds like a good plan," she hoped it would help them and she wouldn't miss anymore spells. Samantha felt a little guilty, especially when Dee talked about bad sportsmanship. She also hadn't been the nicest to her opponents or one would have to think calling somebody a little baby is nice.

Maybe it was because Rose had spoken up, or because Dee didn't say anything to Alec or because Jake had asked her to stop fighting or a combination of all of those, Samantha promised herself that she would be nicer to the other team or at least ignore them. She didn't want to make enemies, she wanted to duel.

Sorry for the delay

Rose heard the small Hufflepuff ask them to stop fighting. Rose felt a prick of guilt. While this had been mildly entertaining for herself, had she ended up stressing out their overseer? Maybe he wasn't the best overseer she'd had in her history of dueling, but she still respected him, at least a little bit, so she decided that she really did want to just duel, and not bicker the whole time.

"Flipendo," Rose murmured, the spell shooting towards Dealla. Dealla wasn't able to dodge this one, either, and was now looking a little bit shaken up. It seemed almost impossible how quickly Dealla had been able to dodge Alec's Expelliarmus. Almost supernatural. But Rose had a feeling it was just luck. Because who could consciously dodge a spell you couldn't even see?

Now Alec was getting really frustrated. Rose wasn't sure entirely why, but he really really did not like how Dealla and Samantha were conversing at all. It was making him very very angry.

He turned to her, reminding her that she was doing great. "Hey, it would have hit if she wasn't so goshdarn lucky," she said, shaking her head. He seemed less angry now, so she added, "Don't let them get to you. The best duelists will win in the end, and then we'll see who's really better at dueling."

C-Could it be...?

Were they....listening?

Maybe it was Jake's imagination, but his blurted out words had caused what seemed to be a subtle change on some of his duelists. It seemed like they had heard him, and well, maybe things weren't calm, but they seemed to be calmer than they were before, at least a little bit.

Jake blinked in disbelief. It was the first time anybody had ever listened to him when he told them not to do something. Not just in dueling. Ever. Was that really what happened when you were a duel captain? An invisible something that made your words mean more than they ever had?

It would be bad form to look too satisfied that you had done just what you were supposed to do, but well, it WAS a surprise. Jake coughed and straightened himself up. Having been given proof of the little bit of power his words held, he tried his best to look the part, nodding in quiet appreciation for those who had looked his way.

Of course, it wasn't everyone. It seemed like Alec was getting more and more frustrated. Jake wondered why - they were winning weren't they? Maybe it was because Dealla had gotten away from his spell. Or maybe it was the quiet confidence that Dealla had in that sharp smile. Confidence, with an edge of something more fierce. Though she had been pelted with knockback jinxes, and been blindfolded (a lot), when you looked at her you would think that she could do this all day. It was maybe a little intimidating.

"U-ummmmmmm..." Jake mumbled, looking at Dealla a little doubtfully. It wasn't just the Gryffindors who had been showing bad sportsmanship. But the fight seemed to be slowing now, so maybe it was best to just let it go. Returning mean words with more mean words just made everything worse, and so maybe all it would take was for one of them to stop. Jake had heard that people tired themselves out if you didn't give them anything to react to. He'd never actually seen that happen, but that's what he had heard.

Now the focus could be on the duel, and the next round of spells began. All casters were quick, and Jake had to pay attention to follow it. It was so quick he couldn't even fully make out the incantations. It seemed the Ravenclaw team had a new strategy. For the first time it was Rose that became a target, both Ravenclaws aiming her way. Whatever spell Samantha tried to do however, she would find that her wand did not cooperate. Maybe her heart wasn't in it as much as it had been a moment before, before she had decided to be nicer. Maybe it was because she was targeting Rose now. Perhaps Alec was easier to aim for - brash and laughing as he was, his laughing seemed to make him the type of target his opponents really wanted to hit. Rose was much quieter, kinder, and she was really quite lovely (Not in that way of course, Jake didn't like anyone yet thank God, but she still was, anyone could see that). Maybe Rose hadn't inspired the killer instinct the Ravenclaws would need. Whatever it was, Samantha's spell failed her. Rose's spell did no better, Samantha dodging out of the way before she could be hit.

Then two things happened, almost at once. A blindfold appeared once again on Dealla's head. Alec, ignored by the Gryffindor team, and seemingly still furious from last round, had directed a blindfolding spell right for Dealla, and though she'd attempted to dodge it, she was just a split second too late. Jake saw a blindfold appear on Dealla AGAIN, and he could only imagine how frustrating that would be. If it was him he was pretty sure he'd want to cry. Then again, he didn't think he'd seen Dealla ever cry. He remembered a time he'd been crying...back when he had been captive in the room of requirement. Dealla had saved him that day, and so he felt a pang of regret the girl found herself blindfolded for the third? fourth? time in this duel.

But even three or possibly four blindfoldings was a cake walk compared to the spell that had hit Rose. Jake's attention was suddenly diverted by green light, and he realized that Rose's sleeve had caught aflame!

Jake steeled himself, biting his lip, though it took all he could to not try to put the fire out with an extinguo. He flinched as he looked at the fire for the second time this duel, this time having found a human target. Too many times fire had come to this school...and those memories still haunted him. He didn't know why people wanted to put each other on fire for sport. But he knew the rules and he knew what they signed up for and no matter how much he didn't like it he knew the duel had to continue....

He would watch closely though, keep an eye on things...he just couldn't let anybody get badly hurt.

The heat that had once been there, it seemed to vanish, Alec noticed it. He wondered if the other duellists had too. He'd gone back to the face he'd had when he started the duel and yet part of his eyes showed focus. It was true. The Ravenclaw team was making them work if they wanted a win. He was too focused on his spellcasting to continue arguing with anyone.

That and Rose's words had left him in a pleasant mood, not because he agreed. Because really, it wasn't helpful. He wasn't going to chance winning no matter what. Even those with limited spells could make themselves better with strategy. It wasn't hard. Alec wasn't sure what their strategy was to be called but they had one, sort of. “Obscuro!” Yes, he'd done it again. He didn't care if blindfolding her so many times got annoying. He'd decided it was much easier to focus on casting when he couldn't see her eyes.

Whether casting on Samantha or her, Alec felt it wouldn't make a difference. She glared daggers, it was annoying for his focus. He watched Rose as she cast her spell, it missed. It was annoying, but he didn't have anyone to blame it on, he was almost tempted to say Rose had a faulty wand. He didn't want to blame her and it wouldn't make sense to blame the Ravenclaw team for it. It was Alec's turn to be glaring daggers when he found out what the Ravenclaws were trying to do. They were playing it smart, but the fire grabbed his attention immediately when it was on his teammate. His jaw set, he couldn't even glare daggers at Dealla for it, so his eyes set on the younger Duellist. In the brief seconds they had before casting, Alec would glare at her for a while before finally turning to Rose. “We're still doing pretty well.” Admittedly your spell not missing would have been a great help, but it's fine. “We've got this, there's no way they could take us down now.” He didn't know why he was saying now. There hadn't been a big chance but he was going with it. They were in a good position still, no matte the situation.


Deep breath. Ready himself and his hand. Let's go!

"Mimblewimble," Rose whispered, sending her spell towards Samantha. The second year was able to dodge it. She would have hit the girl if she hadn't seen it coming and dodged it. Rose wasn't too upset about this, however. She was doing so much better in this duel than she had been in any other duel, so she would take missing a couple of spells as long as she was ahead.

Rose spied Samantha's spell not working, though her spellcasting looked almost there.

Alec seemed confident that they were going to win, though Rose was still doubtful. She nodded at him, straightening her shoulders and pretending to be as assertive as he was. She could do this she could do this she could do this she could do this-

The redhead had not seen Dealla's spell coming. She had been so focused on getting this done, on casting her own spells, that once she tried to dodge, it was already too late. She was on fire. Rose suppressed a gasp. She had been caught off-guard by her opponents, and now she was on fire!

A flash of her other duels came into her brain. Her on fire. Eyre in flames. Chills raced down her back, and she tried to shake the thoughts away.

Focus, Rose. Focus.

Samantha tried to cast obscuro at Rose, but she failed. She had no idea what happend. Just a round ago she had been able to cast the same spell towards Alec. Her head turned red from shame, she hoped nobody had noticed what just happend.

Samantha looked at her partner, when she saw that Dealla's spell had hit Rose. Samantha was happy that at least one of their spells had hit their target, but she stopped smiling as soon as she saw the blindfold on Dee's head. AGAIN? Were they serious? Samantha felt bad for Dee, it must be awful to be blindfolded half of the time.
