Rose watched as Henry didn't respond to Gabe's comments. It was incredibly difficult to figure Henry out, especially because he was so good at hiding his emotions. Rose tucked a curl behind her ear, and watched as he explained he was going to bed. She nodded at him, watching him leave. After a couple more minutes of conversation in which Rose forced herself to finish her bowl of fried rice, Rose could tell Henry wasn't the only one who was tired. Rose left the table silently, washing her bowl and placing it next to Henry's.
Her gaze lingered on Henry's bowl, and she couldn't shake the thought that he was just such a good person. He washed his bowl when he was done eating, put his leftovers back... he was so incredibly thoughtful.
The redhead still couldn't understand how such a great person had to go through all he was going through. Why was the world so cruel? Why was life so hard? Henry hadn't ever done anything to life, and yet he had gone through such immeasurable pain.
Rose went up the stairs silently, only the little patter of her socks on the wood could be heard. Rose placed her hand on the doorknob of the room she shared with Henry .She almost went in, but then froze, giving it a second thought. She couldn't bring herself to go in there, for some reason. She had a feeling Henry needed a minute. A minute without her, a minute without anybody. A minute without the chaos of his step-family, and a minute to pull himself together. Instead, she went into the bathroom, closing and locking the door behind her.
The redhead started to brush her teeth and washed her face, all the while thinking over everything that had happened. Why had her mother moved on without telling them? Or even consulting them? She hadn't given them a second glance before saying yes to Luke. She hadn't even given them a second thought before she dated him. She hadn't even cared.
She liked to think that she cared- asking them about what they thought for the wedding preparations, which Rose wasn't even sure weighed in on her choices. Rose's jaw clenched and she put down the wash cloth. As she put it down, she noticed her hand- it was shaking.
No, no, no, no- a sudden feeling of panic shot through her veins. No, this couldn't be happening again. This had happened before, where her chest had tightened and she couldn't breathe. Where her body betrayed her, acting as if it was trying to kill itself. Rose looked up at herself in the mirror, one hand gripping the sink and the other hand in front of her, shaking. Her eyes were wide and she looked worried.
Rose swallowed hard, but there seemed to be a lump in her throat, making it difficult to breathe. Rose stumbled backwards, sinking to the floor and leaning her back against the wall. She clenched her hands into fists and curled her knees up to her chest, closing her eyes. She clenched her hands into fists until her knuckles turned white. She took deep, measured breaths, that were shaky at first, but then evened out.
The redhead told herself that it was okay. It was fine. She was going to be okay.
Something inside her ached. Her mom, whom she had looked up to, and thought was working and trying her best for the family... her mother had let her down. Her mother didn't care. Rose had thought that at least her mother would have cared, but she didn't. And if her own mother didn't care about her, then...
Rose shoved down the thoughts about her mother, forcing her body to relax. "It's okay," she whispered to herself. "I'm okay," she whispered. She felt the exhaustion of her heart and her body set in. Rose stood up, leaving the bathroom. She entered the room her and Henry were meant to share, carefully. It didn't look like she was interrupting anything, so she climbed into bed, bid him goodnight, and curled up, trying to get comfortable.
The redhead always found it hard to sleep in a new place. The beds were soft, and comfortable, but she still couldn't bring herself to sleep for at least a couple hours after being in bed. But finally, her body gave into the call of sleep, and she was able to go to sleep. She slept very lightly, and woke up a couple of times at random things, like noises outside the house.
in the morning
Rose was usually one to wake up fairly early, but six o'clock AM in Poplar was one in the morning in America. Rose forced herself to sleep a little longer than that after seeing it was one o'clock in the morning. She didn't go back into a deep sleep, but forced herself to stay in her bed regardless. Once it was around six o'clock in America, Rose silently changed into different clothes more suited for the summer, then grabbed a blanket, leaving the room quietly to go downstairs. It was quiet, and she assumed most of her siblings had slept in.
The redhead went out of the beach house and down the steps. She was anxious that maybe they would get worried about her, but she pushed the thought away. Rose sat on the beach, the blanket around her shoulders, watching the sun start to rise.

The time difference of the two countries was the worst when sleeping. Henry often woke up in the night of the frequent night terrors that he lived through for a few years now. Choosing not to turn over or get up, making as little movement or noise as possible.
The final time the teen was awoken from the night terrors, it was still dark out. Laying in the bed. Moments past. The teen took a breath, not containing himself anymore as he sat up. Leaning over toward the nightstand at the clock that says 4:45 am. Henry brushed hus hair aside, knowing exactly how late the time is now in England about now.
Carefully stepping our of bed and maling the covers, the teen slipped off his pajamas.
Placing them in his suitcase. The teen searched for some clothes, finding a short sleeve and shorts that he knew his brither stuck in their. Rolling his eyes at the clothes, Henry slipped them on feeling uncomfortable with his arms exposed. The lad pulled on a jean jacket and a pair of sunglasses thay belonged to his brother.
Using the door connected to the room, Henry carefully crept over to it and unlocked it eith a click. Opening and stepping through the door, leaveing the house for the outdoors. Rough and beadlike sand underneath his snuffed up trainers. Henry carefully shut the door then turned for the water. Deicdeing a early morining could clear his mind.
Walkimg along the sand, Henry looked out at the waters. Waves crashing the distance as the darkness loomed threatening to fade to the oncoming sun set.
The teen walked, slipping his hands inside his pockets as he cane to a halt. Standing still and looking out at the ocean. The smell of salt and slime hit his nostrils, hundreds scenrs mixed and wandered. The teen looked out. Wondering how something so peaceful could mean something so chaotic, so destructive.
The teen drew in a breath, standing there for hours as moments passed and the sun started to rise. Squinting his eyes from the sudden brightness when another scent drew up his nose. Taking a moments breath. Henry recognized it as a famalir one, one he knew like the back of his hand or pages of his favorite book.
Henry took a breath, the scent coming besides him. The teen figured neither saw each other yet and if it was anyone else then he wouldn't have spoke but it wasn't. They- she was different. Smiling softly. Henry looked ahead as he voiced.
"Up to see the sun rise to, Rose."

The redhead closed her eyes and breathed in a deep breath, a peace settling over her. Oh, the smell of the ocean. It had a sharp salty tang, but at the same time, it was so calming. It grounded her. She watched the colors on the horizon shift from the dark blue of the morning to yellows, oranges, and pinks, absentmindedly tracing patterns in the sand with one of her hands. She loved the way that the sun seemed to set the clouds on fire, igniting embers in their depths. This was a moment of peace, a moment of solitude.
"Up to see the sunrise too, Rose."
Rose hadn't noticed he was out here, and she jumped a little at his sudden words. Maybe she should have been more aware of her surroundings. But soon she relaxed again, stretching her legs out in front of her and pressing her hands behind her on the sand.
"Yeah," she murmured. "It's so beautiful out here."
A million miles away from everything that was familiar to her. She didn't have Chaska. She didn't have her house. She didn't have Hogwarts. All she had... all she had was herself. At that moment, that was okay with her.
But then she realized the mistake in her thoughts, looking over at the boy next to her. No, she wasn't alone. She had at least one person she could rely on. She smiled at the thought of Henry, knowing that was even better.
Rose heard a shuffling sound. A calm look of wonder came over her features. "Look." Henry might have spotted it before her, but she whispered it anyway. A crab, no bigger than her hand was skittering across the ground. It paused to watch her for a moment, then watch Henry, then carried on, skirting around both of their feet to continue on. Rose didn't try to touch the crab, watching it scurry over the ground past the two.
"I was really scared to come out to America at first," she admitted. As dumb as it sounded, she had been. A particularly big wave pulled the water under it into itself, then toppled forward, crashing onto the ground and sending a thin wave of frothy water towards the two. It reached towards Rose's toes, wetting her feet before retreating back into the ocean. "Plane flights, airports, loud siblings... being away from everywhere we've ever been before..." she shook her head. No matter how optimistic she had seemed about the situation, on the inside she had been terrified. She breathed in a deep breath that seemed to cleanse her. "But I think we'll be alright," she said softly, and though she didn't sound assertive about the concept, she meant it.
It was weird to think that somebody could be standing in the United Kingdom right now, looking across the Atlantic Ocean, the sun already past risen. She still wasn't happy with her parents, but for now, she was okay. Actually, she was more than okay. She was good. She smiled to herself.
"What should we have for breakfast?" she asked him.

Henry took a breath, trying to follow his owm advice that he gave to Alexa. If he looks up then he will see the same sky that is over England, that is over Loki and his brother and his twin and of all he ever knows.
The time change was one thing to consider. If he was in England then the sun wpild have been up for a few hours by now, he would gave been up and tasks would have been already accomplished. Maybe a few books even read.
Henry heard Rose's voice. Choosing not to respond as he looked ahead at the sky, a blanket covering all no matyer how far someone might seem. His hands in pockets, sunglasses over his eyes as protection from the burning sun. One thing about the states that differs from england is the heat, Henry found it uncomfortably hotter and brighter than in England yet the people didn't seem as friendly there in the states. Strange.
Henry followed his eyes to what Rose was pointing out, a moment as he watched the little blue carb scuttle across the sand and back into hiding. Hiding. Henry thought the crab was lucky that it could go into hiding and stay there for hours, even days on end. The teen took a breath, moving his eyes to lool back up at the sky as he spoke"it's a blue crab," creatures and animals is just another topic that he has knowledge about.
Rose spoke. Describing her fears ans experiences with the travel. Henry stayed silent. Choosing not to contribute to the topic. His mind counting down the days till he can leave this place and go back home, go back to england where his family and everything that he knows is. One day down, eleven more to go.
"I'm glad that you will be alright because it will. One day at a time."
Henry replied to the girl. Replacing her 'we' with a 'you'. The teen saw his childhood as a moment, a moment where he has to live through till he is old enough to be alone. The teen always believed that he could take care of himself no matter how young he is, wanting to mature faster since he never believed that he is destined for old age.
His eyes stayed on the sky, the sun now at full height. The heat baring down the two, one kid and one teenager. Suddenly, he didn’t feel like staying out there as the heat and the brightness made the moment go from beautiful to uncomfortable.
Walking toward Rose, the teen offered her a hand up as he spoke"shouldn't we see what is at this house first?" The teen thought for a moment, after his mum died and while Arthur was at Hogwarts. Henry learned to cook for himself and his twin so he wondered if those skills he learned is still stored in his mind as he spoke"favorite breakfast?" A simple question as he dwelled if he should try his hand once more at cooking lole when he was younger, the teen thought the women; Margerie might still be a asleep so...
"I'm going to cook breakfast today, I learned when I was younger," Henry spoke as he remembered his twin sister's and what was his favorite breakfast. Perhaps he could cook it again? From his own memory alone...

She watched the crab, its presence giving her happiness. Just a little crab, living an innocent little crab life. So simple. Henry pointed out what kind of crab it was. Rose liked that about Henry. He seemed to know everything about everything- well, mostly the things he was interested in. Animals. Foreign schools. Languages. He was just smart. Sometimes, in that way, he reminded her of Franklin, with knowledge about everything. Except it wasn't loud knowledge. It was quiet knowledge. It was just a fact. Not him bragging about himself and everything he knew. Just something he had picked up.
Rose didn't know why, but that comforted her.
He replied, finally. Except not in the way Rose expected. She was talking about both of them. He was just talking about her. She turned to look at him, a skeptical look on her face. "What is that supposed to mean?" she asked, her stomach twisting. It was supposed to be reassuring to her, but it wasn't. It raised so many questions in her mind, and her heart started to feel tense. Did he feel like he wasn't going to be okay?
She pushed it aside, however, as the subject wandered to breakfast. He offered her a hand and she politely stood up without his help, knowing if she let him pull her up she would most likely slip on the sand. She brushed herself off, picking up the blanket that she had brought with her and shaking it out as he mentioned it would probably be smart to see what was at the house first. She shrugged and nodded. "Well- yeah, you're probably right."
The redhead thought for a moment on his question, then decided. "Pancakes. I barely ever have them." It was true- they didn't have very good pancake-making tools, usually using a pan and a spatula, though it was difficult to make many because of the size of the pan. Even when they did have the time and materials, Rose barely ever found motivation to make pancakes. Usually Rose and Faith were in charge of breakfast since their mother was barely ever around. However, Rose woke up earlier than Faith did on an average day, so breakfast almost always fell to her. "What about you?"
He mentioned that he was going to cook breakfast this morning. "Really?" she asked, a spark of excitement in her eyes. She knew Henry was similar to her in the way that he had to fend for himself and his siblings growing up. Ever since he was seven, both of his parents had been gone. Rose's mom had been around, but just barely. Enough to keep them alive, keep them going to school, and keep their grades up. Rose couldn't remember a time where her mother had been free of obligations. Even over last Christmas break, she had worked a few days. Rose was glad that she could fend for herself, but also not glad that it came about in those kinds of circumstances.
They went inside, closing the door behind them. It was quiet inside. Rose couldn't be sure if it was the kind of quiet she liked or the unnerving kind. Maybe it was somewhere in between. Rose sat down, watching Henry. "Have you ever vacationed at the beach before?"

The waves crashed aginest the shore. High Tide in the early morning of the warm, amber sun. Henry look ahead, a few seagulls in the distance fluttered against the waves attempting to grab themselves breakfast.
The calmer waves and humid breeze felt contrasting to what he knows from back hoke acorss the oceans. A chil usually aginest your spine or a strengthening wind current with crashing waves aginest a cliff. Small memories. The type that would make one wish they were there instead.
Henry ignored the girl's question, not bothering to explain. He grew up wirh change. Becoming use to it and adapting to when he needed to. His eyes saw larger problems- worries than being okay or coming to terms wirh certain emotions. This step in his life, merely another moment in time. Another barrier that will come and pass. Drawing in a breath. Henry stared out at the rippling currents wondering how long this will last for.
The teen turned on his heel, walking back to the house with his hands nestled in his pockets. Walking ahead, not looking back toward Rose. The teen listened, nodding to her answer then took a moment befire speaking"oatmeal." A simple breakfast dish but one that he enjoyed, remembering from years back now his mum use to add chopped berries to the bowl or sugar to sweeten it up. A small memory that meant a lot now.
Henry drew in a breath, his breathing steady as he heard Rose's question or rather wors of thought. Taking a moment then he spoke"Arthur would cool for us most days after the attack but when he was at hogwarts, Anna and I would cook together," the first few days thay the two twins cooked was them learning the basics but a yeat or two after and they started to experiment with their cooking.
Vacation? Henry thought for a moment, the word sounded strange to his ears before realizing as he spoke"you mean holiday? Vacationing, what strange words america has," the teen took a moment to think before continuing"we never had a proper holiday but occasionally would accompany our father to Ireland or Scotland or another place that he's needed for his work," a nod to silently ask Rose the samr question as he rounded up to the house. Slipping his left hand from his pocket, the teen pulled open the door and allowed Rose to enter first before going in behind her.

Oatmeal was a fairly easy and cheap breakfast meal. Rose didn't dislike oatmeal. It wasn't a great food in Rose's opinion, but she wouldn't turn her nose up to it. Henry had answered so simply to her question. Sometimes she wondered if she should ask him more about what he said sometimes, especially when his answers were so simple and curt, but most of the time she decided against it. If he wanted to tell her, he would have.
It was unfair that they, as kids, were forced to be on their own. They were just children when they hadn't gotten a nurturing childhood like other kids. It was the little things that put Rose off. How they had to make their own food. Do their own laundry. Take care of each other. Just little things that other kids took for granted that they had no choice about. She wasn't complaining. It would have been nice to have her mother around when she was younger, but she wasn't complaining. It had shaped her into the independent person she was today, and she was grateful for that. She could take care of herself.
She nodded at Henry's comment about Arthur cooking and then him and Anna learning to cook.
Rose rolled her eyes. "No, a holiday is a day of celebrating something. A vacation is when you leave your home on break," she teased him. Forever the banter between Rose and Henry. Rose nodded silently at his next comment. She didn't think she'd ever gone for a vacation anywhere but in America to visit her family, and that definitely hadn't been on the beach last time.
The redhead smiled as Henry let her in first, murmuring her thanks. They entered the kitchen and Rose opened the fridge, revealing plenty of food, along with a note.
Dear Moons and company, I hope this house will be to your satisfaction. I sent somebody down to restock the house as we haven't visited in a good while.
And then it gave some contact information.
She knew they had been expected, but she didn't know the Berntholds would send someone down here to set stuff up for them. She smiled at her grandmother's handwriting and tucked the note in her pocket, then strode over to the island set her elbows on it. "So, what are you going to make for us today, Master Chef?" she asked him.

Henry smiled a little at Rose's words, waiting a moment before he spoke"the word; vacation sounds weird and why use to words? Holiday describes both a day of celebration and a trip," the teen found American english strange. Why change the meaning of certain words... it was concept he wanted learn more of but currently would settle for the lighthearted and fun debates with Rose. Joyful and learning. It held a little of each.
Following Rose, he would hold the door for her. Walking in after, carefully shutting the door. He would follow her to the kitchen of the beach house. Hus heart stirring, missing his beloved feline.... the sound Loki's paws made on tile or the meow he did for food or attention. The feel of his fury paws on his legs or face at night or while he read. The comfort he felt by his presence. The teen couldn't describe it.... but felt it... Loki's absence.
Watching, Henry leaned on the counter. Watching Rose read the note left to the fridge, his mind still on his feline... his brother... twin... those back across the sea... the teen heard Rose's voice. Turning to her, thinking... dwelling for a moment. What to make.... the teen eyed Rose, a small smile as he spoke"a surprise," a nod followed by a wink as he turned.
Stepping, opening the fridge. His eyes peered in, questioning what to make. A idea formed. He moved to grab certain ingredients, strawberries... raspberries.. eggs... bananas... chocolate syrup... and a few others.
Setting them to the table. He went to gather a few others, a bowl... marshmallows... flour... sugar... a chocolate bar.... and a few others... the teen set to mixing the dry ingredients. Two bowls. It took a few minutes, moving swiftly and smiling up at Rose. Occasionally, sprinkling her with a bit of flour as he worked.
Heating the stove, he set two pans on top. Seven plates next to them. He started to cook the first batch, pouring the batter in the pan. As it cooked, he went to wash and cut the berries. Setting three bowls out, bananas.... strawberries... and raspberries next to the chocolate syrup, whipped cream and marshmallows.
He worked with the pancakes, making sure each plate had three. Two plates contained three chocolate pancakes each, four contained three plain pancakes each, and one plate contained one plain pancake. Moving to the chocolate, shaving some into a pot, melting the chocolate down.
He pour the hot chocolate mixture into a cup, adding whipped cream, chocolate syrup and some marshmallows. Nodding to his work. The teen carefully took the mug of hot chocolate and stepped over to Rose. Placing in in front of her.
Moving back to the plates, the teen plied the bananas and raspberries with chocolate syrup over the two plates of chocolate pancakes. Taking one in each hand.
Placing one in front of Rose and one on the counter, the teen nodded to the second plate as he spoke"that is for Gabe," walking back over to the four plates with 3 plain ones each. He decorated them with fruit and chocolate syrup, a little whipped cream.
The teen carefully moved each pancake to the counter next to Gabe's, placing one next to Rose's seat. That his own. Nodding to the others he spoke"for Franklin, Jess, and your aunt." The teen then worked to clean up, putting everything a way. He thought that Rose would figure
out that the plate with the lone pancake and no toppings if for Faith.
Once done, he would sit beaides Rose. Pulling his plate close. As he eyed her, the teen spoke"so? How is it?"
