The first spell missed. The second... hang on... the second? Callista barely had time to finish her incantation when the exceptionally cast Flipendo spiraled into her chest. She was so sick of that blue light by now. This time the jet of light was stronger, harder, and more powerful than before. As if she had been suckerpunched, the first year flew backwards, the blackness of unconsciousness creeping up from her peripheral vision.

Later, Callista would be thankful that she hadn't felt the impact of the ground on her skull. When she reflected on it later, it was quite painful - as it should be. But also, it was a relief. The pressure of the duel and making the right choices was over; the responsibility had been lifted off her shoulders. She imagined this is what Atlas would have felt if the world's weight had been taken off his shoulders.

As she processed this, she also felt guilty. She should be ashamed at being glad to leave the field and leaving her partner on her own, but her relief was stronger. Although she did wish she could have gone a less painful way. Callista didn’t know whether Raine and Lamik would feel guilty sending her flying, but it wouldn’t matter either way. If you couldn’t hit your opponents, you couldn’t win. That’s how duelling worked, after all...

It did hurt quite a bit, though.

After the short interruption, the duel immediately returned to a new exchange of spells.

Alexa found herself now the sole target of both Gryffindors, and it seemed to mess with her focus. While she managed to barely avoid the Knockback Jinx flashing towards her from Lamik's wand - it brushed by her so closely she could probably feel the force of it stirring her hair - Raine's spell hit her straight on. It was arguably the nastier one of the two. Flipendo promised a blow and pain, but the Slug-Vomiting Charm... Well, the name really says it all. No one could hold against her that this spell flying towards her got her distracted enough that her own spell backfired, too, the Knockback Jinx meant for Lamik punching into her right as Raine's spell connected.

Alexa turned an unhealthy shade of green, and the pain was likely secondary to the disgusting, slimy feeling in her mouth, as she started vomiting up slugs, right on the floor in front of her. Dee grimaced in disgust, taking a step backwards, as the slugs started making their escape towards the edge of the stage. Poor Alexa. Poor slugs. Poor house-elves who would have to clean that up later. It seemed Raine was more cruel than Dee would have given her credit for.

Even Lamik wasn't indifferent enough to not cringe at the spell that hit Alexa. Getting the air knocked out of you after being knocked to the floor was one thing, but this? He shuddered at the thought of how it must have felt, something that he had luckily never experienced during his time at Hogwarts, and hopefully never would. At this point, maybe knocking her out of the game as soon as possible would be a mercy. Thats what he wanted to think, at least, with the effects of the curse placed on him getting worse and worse.

Raine twirled her wand in thought as she watched the younger Hufflepuff turn green. She could only imagine what it felt like to have something slimy trying to exit out of your mouth. It was why Raine avoided slimy foods like Okra. That slimy texture in your mouth just felt too much like someone's mucus was sliding around in your mouth.

The third year would wince as the other girl's spell backfired, leaving Raine to hope and pray that never happened to her. Looking around at her partner and the prefect who was moderating their duel, Raine suspected that they were a bit surprised at the spell and grossed out as well. Was she the only person to ever use this in a duel? Well, if she was, now everyone knew what it would do and know that Raine had no issues with using it...even though it was only her second time ever using the spell successfully. Now she just needed to help end this duel with Lamik by her side.

Alexa saw the first jinx headed her way, and spun out of the way avoiding it… But she spun directly into her other opponent's spell, even as she attempted to fire off her own. Raine's spell punched her in the stomach, and she immediately felt sick and queasy. At the same time, her own spell backfired, striking her in knocking backward.

She felt weak, and her stomach was very upset… Her mouth felt slimy. And suddenly, she started vomiting. Vomiting slugs! That must've been what Raine's spell did. Oh, it was awful. She staggered backward, bent over at the waist, continuing to vomit. She raised her wand shakily, trying to target someone, anyone to her distraction. Would she even be able to pronounce a spell with all of the slugs?

It seemed that the Knockback Jinx was the chosen spell of this duel.

All three remaining duellists had picked Flipendo as their next attack, both Gryffindors again aiming for Alexa, Lamik sneezing and dripping, Alexa with her wand pointed at Lamik, still choking up slugs.

Considering the circumstances, it was not very surprising that Alexa's aim was rather off for this spell. Honestly, Dee thought it was impressive that she even managed to evade Lamik's jinx, especially as easily as it seemed to be. She was not so lucky with Raine's spell: The flash of light hit her stomach, perhaps aiding another burst of slugs on their way out of Alexa's mouth - but at least after that, it seemed, the effect was finally, blissfully, over. Dee felt relieved, probably most of the audience did as well. Honestly, who'd come up with that spell?

On the other side of the stage, Lamik seemed to be over the worst of his cold, managing to shake off the remnants of the curse before it could overwhelm him. This meant that now, all three duellists were back in good shape - although Alexa was starting to look very battered.

Raine looked at her partner and inhaled in sympathy. She knew all too well what it felt like to try to cast a spell while under the effects of a cold. That blasted spell was a menace, but luckily it seemed as if Lamik rebounded and was feeling much better. He must have trained in preparation for these moments. Raine wished she had trained hard like him. Her focus returned to her opponent and she raised her wand. The next attack would most likely finish this duel if her attack landed. She felt horrible about all of this...

Or did she?

Lamik felt his nose starting to clear up, heard his breathing become less raspy, and sensed the energy flooding back into his system. This was good. Less of an illness meant more focus meant and easier time hitting meant a faster win. He had a strong suspicion that his and Raines opponent was on her last leg (though luckily she still had two of them- Lamik wouldn't have been very happy if it was his fault that she lost one). His training had certainly paid off, and he wasn't going to stop training after the dueling season was over. Not just against the curse, but training every aspect of magic dueling that he could. This was much, much, better then quidditch,

Alexa knew that there was no way she could possibly win the duel at this point. At least she wasn't still vomiting up slugs, though that last spell that hit her in the stomach had caused a huge final heave! Feeling very tired, and knowing that she had little energy left to work with, while the Gryffindors were at full strength, she prepared to cast another spell.

A WIN FOR GRYFFINDOR
And with a sudden, final exchange of spells, the duel was over.

There was no surprise in the choice of the Gryffindors' target or actions, although Raine deviated from Lamik's consistent and repeated choice of Knockback Jinx by sending a stream of green flames across the stage. Alexa did not stand a chance, really: Both spells were well cast and well aimed, the Knockback Jinx was likely the most powerful spell they had seen all duel.

Poor Alexa did not get the opportunity to dodge. In a last show of bravery, she attempted to return the favour of the flames roaring her way and cast fire of her own at Raine, but the attack was dodged so easily it did not seem like any effort at all, and then the two spells hit, flinging Alexa to the ground where she stood and setting her on fire on top of it.

There was no question whether she would be getting up again.

"Stop!" Dee called once more, hopping onto the stage and pointing her own wand at Alexa. "Extinguo," she muttered, watching the flames go out, before waving forward the healers on standby. They would take care of the Hufflepuff girl - neither of the Gryffindors needed medical attention, they seemed to have no injuries at all. An overwhelming victory, indeed.

Dodging the still slimy patch of slugs on the stage, Dee turned around. "Raine Sage and Lamik Fillestar of Gryffindor are the winners of this duel!" Dee announced, then waited for a moment as cheers rang up from the audience, red-clad students celebrating the win. Then she sent Raine and Lamik a quick grin, bright and cheerful. "Congratulations. Good job. Very clean, really, with some slimy exceptions. Looking forward to facing you myself one day."
