This race seemed to be going incredibly fast as the first years trudged on with the race, seemingly becoming more adept at walking in the sacks and climbing over the hurdles. Remi's cry out when he failed the log hurdle hurt Willow's heart but, that was the name of the game. While he seemed down about it for a quick second he quickly recovered and managed to make it over the log and even ahead to nearly catch up with Starlee and Tina. He had started as the leader but had quickly become the underdog, and Willow loved an underdog. "Come on Remi! You got this!"

Willow's attention was pulled as Starlee attempted to shoulder check Melissa. A small squeak came out of Willow as she repressed a warning, but Melissa was able to barely dodge it, leaping out of the way and onto the log before Starlee could get her. Willow couldn't help but breathe a small sigh of relief. Melissa truly launched herself off of the log with grace and ease, and even got so far as to try another log but ultimately she was unsuccessful. "Melissa you're almost there, let's go!" She looked back to see Martyna struggling a little bit in moving, maybe she needed some encouragement too. "Let's go Tina! Get your footing and keep going!" This was going to a close race.

So you know how they say that there's always a first time for everything? Well, that was the case for Melissa right now. She basically flew over the second log hurdle while Starlee tried to shoulder check her. Yeah, that's right, the little Slytherin really did just do that. I guess that Slytherins never change huh? she thought. Although she barely avoided that, she still kept on going on. Nothing was going to stop her! Well, other than the logs. The logs were just so annoying. Before Mel even knew it, the last log was in front of her. The obstacle between her and the finish line.

Then, she jumped, hoping her momentum was enough. Welp, she messed up...real bad. Apparently, the momentum was not enough. She had trusted it so much that she didn't even jump that hard. Why did I even trust it was enough? she wondered as she landed on the grass in front of the log. It was the final obstacle and her mind just decides to fail. It was the only thing keeping Melissa from winning now. She looked back and saw all of the other first-years still at the second log. Well I can actually still win if I try... she thought. No way she was going to stop now! Seeing the others still struggling gave her hope so, she jumped as hard as she could. She tried to do jump over the log just like she did earlier.

It seemed Tina was a tad distracted by her friend's display. Instead of focussing on her running (or, more appropriately, bouncing), the Hufflepuff found herself completely gripped by Star's attempt to trip Melissa up. She shuffled forwards in her sack, eyes wide as the Slytherin swung herself at the other girl, only narrowly missing as Melissa managed to fling herself out of the way. Out of the way... and over the second log! Tina's jaw fell open. Guess that's what happens when you try to play dirty: karma. What was worse was that there was now an entire log sat between the girls, leaving Melissa fully out of harm's way. Those chocolate frogs might as well be hers! Tina grumbled ay the thought, glancing back over her shoulder.

Despite his initial struggle, Remi had made it safely over the first log, and was now rapidly approaching the two girls. Tina gritted her teeth, not willing to give up until the last minute. There was still a chance, for both her and Star! Willow was cheering all four of them on (well, three; she neglected to encourage the Slytherin in their group, most likely because of her attempted sabotage). Tina clutched her sack, leaping forwards. "I'm coming for you, Melissa!" she assured the Ravenclaw, looking up at the log in front of her. She took a moment to nod to Star. "You've got this."

Well, that certainly wasn't what Starlee had expected. Melissa had not only narrowly dodged Starlee's shoulder check, but managed to bound forward across the other log, putting herself way ahead of her and Tina. This wasn't even the least of her problems, as Remi had finally made his way over the first log and had caught up to the both of them. Unless Melissa lost her footing on the third log, she would be winning. Well, the least she could do was try to get past this log... or take out Remi. She wondered if she should take that chance again and thought better of it. She didn't want to come in fourth, after all.

Willow had yelled out words of encouragement to everyone else except her, and this didn't go unnoticed. 'Hmpf.' Well, perhaps she didn't have the second year on her side, but she certainly had Tina there for her. She nodded back at Martyna and said "Let's give it all we got, Tina!!" She gripped her sack and readied herself to jump the log. She had shot onto the last one with relative ease, so here's hoping this one would be easy as well... and she could maybe catch up to Melissa.

They were finally getting a hang of it! The students seemed to be getting steadier and quicker in their racing, the logs seeming to be a second thought as they found the method that worked for them in clambering over them in the awkward potato sacks. Willow watched as Starlee gave up from the short and brief fighting strategy to encourage Tina in brilliant running and leaping. They were quite the encouraging duo, but would they be broken up in the fight for victory? Remi was only a space behind them, seemingly taking his time to get over the hurdle. Honestly, who could blame him. Willow thought that the logs she got might've been too large for the smaller bigger than her kids. But, honestly, it just gave them more of a challenge so it was a thought that was quickly shrugged off. "Let's go Starlee, Tina, and Remi! Final stretch! Who will reign victorious? Who will eat dirt? All this and more in the next round of the sack race!" Willow was getting really into it.

So into in fact, that she almost stopped breathing as she watched Melissa retake on the hurdle she initially failed at and conquer it and stumble majestically into the winner's circle! "Meli has taken first place! I repeat, Meli has taken first place! Woo! Go Meli, you did it! Take a little breather!" She could only imagine how much effort and energy the race took, she remembered doing them in primary school and always downing water after. Should she have brought water? Oh well, hopefully they brought some for themselves. They would always have time to get water before the tug of war if they were participating. "Second and third place is still up for grabs! One log hurdle left for the lot of you!" Willow was giddy with excitement in seeing how the match would end. This was a lot more exciting than initially anticipated.

Well, Starlee had done it again. Perhaps it was not quite so wonderful as the last log, but hey, she made it over. Tina had made it too, and she felt excited that they were both in this together. Starlee took a moment to survey where Remi was, and he was still atop the log behind them. There was no room for errors now! They just had to hope that their hop hop hopping would get them to the finish line. As she went to look to where Melissa was, she realized that the other girl had made quick work of the last log, and was at the finish line. She had won it. A pit of anger and jealousy began to form in her stomach as Willow announced the results. 'If only my attempt to slam into her had worked! Then Tina could be in first!' Starlee was typically not the angry type, but she had really wanted her or Tina to win, she felt they truly deserved it. Well... the least they could do was aim for second and third... Hopefully, Remi would struggle with that last log again. She didn't plan to resort to violence again unless Tina had a sure shot. She looked toward Tina again, hoping that they could push one more time for a win. "Come on Tina!!! Let's do this!"

And just like that, she'd done it. Tina watched helplessly as Melissa soared over the final hurdle, claiming her winning position in first place, and the chocolate frogs that it came with. Oh how she'd desperately wanted Starlee to succeed in her effort to trip the other girl up! Like most eleven year olds, Tina wasn't very good at keeping her competitiveness under wraps, and although she made an effort to disguise her frustration at Melissa, her expression definitely darkened a tad. Not in a particularly intimidating way (in reality, she probably looked quite silly), but the encouraging friend from before had disappeared.

This was war.

"Second and third place is still up for grabs! One log hurdle left for the lot of you!"

Tina dragged the sack up further, sparing Starlee a quick glance. Remi remained the straggler of the group, just about making his way atop the previous log with a mighty leap. Although the distance between her and the other boy was slim, in Tina's mind, it was between her and Star now. The decision was clear: her closest friend at Hogwarts, or the chocolate frogs. Deep down, she knew she wanted to prevail over everyone else still in the competition, even if it came at the cost of an argument with her buddy. She was also aware of how selfish this was, however, and with Starlee's encouragement no less!

"Come on Tina!!! Let's do this!"

Tina gritted her teeth. She wasn't going to let Starlee win, she wasn't that generous, but there would be no dirty play on her part!

While Melissa was celebrating first place, there was still a battle brewing behind her for second and third place. Remi seemed to get stuck on top of the log, his potato sack getting stuck on a stray branch that Willow forgot to get rid of. A complete mess up on her part, but nothing to do about it now. It was admirable to see Tina and Starlee continue to encourage each other despite being direct competition. It was easy to tell that Starlee was a Hufflepuff, really trying to pull her friend to victory alongside with her. Rather than without her.

It seemed like her encouragement worked for herself at the very least. She seemed to absolutely propel herself, getting a running start, to leap over the log with ease and grace and landing safely in the finished zone! "Starlee has won second place! Who will get third? Come on Tina! Let's go Remi!" Tina wasn't far behind, but seemed to pause at the top of the log looking down at the finish. Was she leaving an opportunity for Remi to catch up? Would she fumble getting down? There was so much tension in the air rising as Willow was watching carefully for who would secure the third place.

Maybe Starlee should have been a Hufflepuff, Tina thought to herself. Certainly, she was much more forthcoming with her kind encouragements than Tina had been (although, this was mainly because it was quite tricky for her to chatter and hop at the same time). As a result, what seemed to be very generous karma was on her side, and she soon managed to secure her place in second, flying over the last log with ease, just as Melissa had done before. Tina almost cursed herself for being so competitive about the whole thing - more affirmation that Hufflepuff was not for her, at least in her mind - before remembering that the race was still on. There was little time to dwell on the funny, sort of angry and sort of proud feeling in her tummy. Remi was straggling behind, and it seemed highly unlikely that he could catch up to her now, but there was still a chance. With a deep breath, she leapt upwards, landing on the final log with bent knees.

Starlee and Melissa were waiting behind the finish line, likely feeling very pleased with themselves and celebrating their victories (and chocolate frogs). Tina stared down at the two of them, pulling her potato sack up so that it was firmly around her waist. Whilst third place didn't sound so epic, she knew there had be a way to make it epic. She would perform this jump perfectly. It was now or never.

"I'm bloody coming for you guys!" she yelled out, cheeks flushed red as she took the leap of faith.

Last Moderation Round
Starlee joined the winner's circle with Melissa as they looked on to watch Tina and Remi battle it out for third place. It definitely wasn't the climatic ending that Willow imagined, friends battling each other for the temptation of chocolate frogs. Elbowing each other left and right and sabotaging the person next to them to try and get ahead. Maybe what she had seen at Hogwarts had already started to taint her view on what people actually were like before they came to the school. Maybe this school made them into more savage competitors, children that would do anything to win. The thoughts couldn't help but creep up on Willow as she briefly pondered how much Hogwarts really had changed her.

Tina slid off her log easily and hopped into the winner's circle with Starlee and Melissa, with Remi still in the middle of the course struggling with his potato sack. Willow bounced up to the three at the finish line. "Congrats to you three!" She handed out the appropriate galleons and chocolate frogs before turning to Remi. "Good try Remi! You really put up a fight out there." At least in the first half he did. She felt bad leaving just one person without a prize, but it is what it is.
