"You cool with that?"

“Yeah, I'm cool with that. I didn't have a problem with it or anything, just didn't really mind which one." Elodie smiled at Mars, hoping their feud would be put to the side for now. The tension seemed to have eased, and Elodie was more than glad. Mars seemed past the fight as well, which relieved Elodie of some worry. She wasn't sure if everyone had fallen for her less than sincere apology, but that was okay. For now, at least - hopefully it wouldn't be brought up later.

With peace returned to the carriage, Elodie undid the hair ties that bound her thick locks together, letting them free, then quickly tied them back up again. Earlier, when she had been heaving her trunk onto the train, runaway locks had escaped from their confinements and then rested themselves against Elodie's neck. With her hair secure, and eager to make sure that Crystal, Wyatt and (especially) Mars knew that she wasn't all that evil, Elodie turned to the compartment.

"Did you guys know 'bout... all of this? Or did you only just learn?" she asked, her tone loosing some of its shyness. "I'm technically a half-blood, but my dad didn't tell me about all o' this 'till when I got my letter"

"Did you guys know 'bout... all of this? Or did you only just learn?" Elodie asked, after she fixed her hair. Wyatt turned from the window, and noticed she had re-done her hair. "I'm technically a half-blood, but my dad didn't tell me about all o' this 'till when I got my letter"

Wyatt smirked, another half-blood was easy to come by nowadays, but it was still comforting. Since the Dark Lord had gone, pure-blood families had been more lenient on who they married and had kids with. Thinking about the Dark Lord made him shudder. He didn’t know much about his grandparents, but his mom told him stories. They were both big supporters of the Death Eaters, and even after his death, they called him the Dark Lord, not Vo- not his real name. Wyatt couldn’t bring himself to say or even think the name either. He knew, even in death, he was fueling the Dark Lord’s power, but saying the name brought him so much pain. What his grandparents had done to support him- what they’d gone through. He’d hardly had time to process the wizarding world, as his mother decided to tell him all about it only in the past year, since his dad left and they felt safe. It was all so much. If not being able to say his name meant he didn’t have to hurt, it was ok.

“My mum didn’t tell me anything until last year.” He left out the part about his father leaving them because they possessed magical abilities. They’d met minutes ago, and he didn’t want them to pity him. He didn’t want anyone knowing, really. They’d only think he was the sad, fatherless boy. “My mum’s a witch, my father’s a muggle.”

At Elodie's question, the compartment fell into easy conversation. Mars decided to forget what had happened earlier; there was no sense in bringing it up now.

So both Elodie and Wyatt were half-bloods. Huh.

"I didn't know anything about anything until about a month ago. I don't have parents, and neither of them were wizards anyway." It was probably far too easy to admit that they were an orphan. The only memories of their parents existed in the knowledge they must have come from somewhere. Other than that, all they knew was that they were two people crazy enough to have six kids in the span of seven years.

Mars thought about the first time the wax sealed letter had ended up on their bedside table. When they had woken to find it lying there, they had promptly thrown it away, thinking that it was another one of Lady Estella's attempts to trick them into going to a ball. There was no way in hell they'd show up anywhere with a gown, let alone one as large as the ladies who attended the Castillion parties wore. But when another letter had appeared the next day, same exact crest stamping its red wax, Mars had thought there was something fishy about it all. Again, it had gone in the trash. They didn't open spam mail. Still, the letters kept pouring in. Every day, there was a new one on the nightstand. Every noon, one on the table. Every hour, one of the T'ien boys ran up, a paper airplane made of familiar-looking parchment clutched in their hands.

Eventually, they had given in. When they cracked the wax seal, they thought they had gone crazy. Wizards and magic and an entire secret world hidden under the guise of normality? That seemed like a brilliant opener for a malicious call. But then, they had been noticing the odd things that happened. Plato flying. Doors unlocking from the wrong side. Estella's hideous creation turning black in the middle of the night. Maybe "magic" had some merit to it. Still, a boarding school wasn't what they were looking for. So, again, the letter had gone in the trash, and Mars had continued on like they'd never read it. Until—well, that wasn't something they wanted to think about.

Shaking themselves out of their thoughts, Mars looked expectantly at Crystal, the only one who hadn't responded.

Crystal listened while drawing everyone, hearing that everyone else in the cabin only learned about magic recently. Seems like she always good at finding some sort of way to stand out. "My mother is a witch, and my father is a muggle. But my mother and father never really hid magic from me. In fact a lot of my memories as a child are my mother using magic to help out with daily chores, and cooking. But I guess that makes it to where all of you can ask questions about it if you want," she said, starting to do an outline of the four of them in the compartment properly.

Not looking up from her drawing she spoke again "My father is an electrical engineer and I went to a muggle school. I'm good with electronics and those sort of things. I love the non-moving pictures even more than the moving ones. But I also have the other half of my mother, and being able to grow up surrounded by magic and magical creatures. Birthdays with my mother's family were always crazy, but ones with my father's were always rather calm and relaxing. Both were nice, neither were too weird. Even if my parents did decide to hide it from me, my first magic use I did was a little too obvious for it to be anything other than magic. I mean, a field spontaneously bursting out into flame would be very hard to explain to a nine year old," she started to ramble a bit, hoping to show the others what she experienced growing up seeing both sides of magic and non magic. She was being careful of her wording though, she didn't want any of the others to feel uncomfortable about her personal life stories. To her, growing up without magic would feel extremely strange, so she was trying to be as respectful as possible while still being able to give them a piece of her experience. They all already shared that experience in common, she was the odd one out.

Mars smiled at Crystal.

"If you think trying to explain a field spontaneously bursting into flame would be hard to explain to a nine-year-old, you should try to convince a 4-year-old not to jump off any more bridges after he managed to fly off of one," they snickered, "But I do have a question: how the hell does Hogwarts work? Is it just like a muggle school, where we all get put in classes and do homework and what not?"

Mars had never been sure what they were getting into. They had always assumed that it would be similar enough to normal school that they would be able to figure it out, just that the subjects would be replaced with magic. But after going through Diagon alley, well, they were not so sure anymore.

They sighed, thumbing at their earbuds lightly. They had never been comfortable in new places with new people. And this would be the longest they would be away from their brothers. They could not help but be worried. With all their fiddling, they accidentally pulled the aux cord out of their phone. A soft melody started to play out of the speakers, filling up the compartment.

"But I do have a question: how the hell does Hogwarts work? Is it just like a muggle school, where we all get put in classes and do homework and whatnot?"

“Sure, from what I know, it’s like muggle school with magic replacing things like… science becomes potions, physical education becomes flying, stuff like that.” Wyatt explained. He frowned, naming the classes made him aware of how he just got the hang of what math even was before he would never learn it again. Math was Wyatt’s least favorite subject in his muggle school, and he was just beginning to understand it. He was thinking about this when he heard a song fill the quiet compartment. He looked over to where the sound was coming from and found it was coming from Mars, who had fiddled her headphones out of the jack, and so the device was playing the music freely.

He listened to the soft song and wondered what it was, he thought he’d heard it before, but he wasn’t quite sure. Wyatt wasn’t listening to as much calming songs as he used to. His love for acoustic melodies was fading, morphing into loud, thumping rock. It almost calmed him more than slow songs at this point. The lyrics knew how he felt, the artists were almost singing to him. He focused on the tune Mars was playing, but he couldn’t name it, so he asked, “What song is that?”

"Sure, from what I know, it’s like muggle school with magic replacing things like… science becomes potions, physical education becomes flying, stuff like that.” Wyatt said. Mars breathed an exaggerated sigh of relief, but internally, they were glad that it wouldn't be too dissimilar to muggle school. It felt weird calling it that. It felt weird using the word muggle at all, honestly.

They grappled with the headphones as they caught Wyatt looking on. He seemed intrigued and that halted Mars' movements for a moment.

“What song is that?” he asked. Mars picked up their phone and power it on, looking at the song title.

"Maniac, by Conan Gray," they replied. The beat was upbeat and pure pop, a kind of anthem song for getting out of toxic relationships. They felt a little bit of anxiety drain out of their shoulders as they told him this. Better this song than one of his others, they supposed. No one needed depressing music right before being shipped out to the middle of nowhere. Still, they paused it, not wanting to bother any of the others any more than they already had.

Speaking of nowhere, the train ride had evidently pasted far quicker than they thought it would. The tall towers of a castle on the distant hill were rising quickly as the train approached. Hogwarts. The first step into everything or nothing. They hoped it would be the former.

Looking quickly back at Wyatt and the other two girls, they smiled.

"Question for the road?," they asked, "Or two, really. First, what's your favorite kind of music? Second, I heard something about a house system? What houses are you gonna choose?"

Mars hadn't given this much thought. They didn't know enough about the houses to make a choice really. This was just the way they did things; bite the bullet, head on in. They'd deal with the consequences later.

They felt the train pull to a stop.

It was nice getting to know all of you," they said, a prerequisite farewell. Maybe they harbored a little something against Elodie still, but they weren't about to bring that up again. They looked to Crystal.

"I'll hold you to that, asking you all the questions. If I ever get stuck, don't be surprised if I come popping out of nowhere."

They could hear the bustle of the compartments next to them as witches, wizards, and wixes hurried excitedly to get off the train. They sat back though. They had nowhere to be. They could wait for the other's responses and for them all to leave the train first.

"Or two, really. First, what's your favorite kind of music? Second, I heard something about a house system? What houses are you gonna choose?" Mars asked the group. Crystal was a little stunned at the fact that he thought that you could choose your house, but she quickly remembered that he didn't know about magic or even hogwarts until recently. "You can't choose your house, the sorting hat will assign it to you. It takes you personality and places you into the house you fit best in. Gryffindors are considered brave, Hufflepuffs are known for being loyal and kind, Ravenclaws are known for their intelligence, and Syltherins are known for being ambitious and cunning. My mother was a Ravenclaw, but she doesn't mind if I'm placed in a different house. But there is a good chance I'll be put there, but I don't mind getting a different house. Though I would love to be a Ravenclaw," She smiled at the thought of getting the same house as her mum. The Ravenclaw house was always talked about fondly, and stories of all the stuff her mothers housemates got up to were some of the most fun stories one could tell. She carefully removed a couple of pieces of paper from her sketchbook, handing one to everyone in the cabin. On their papers they would see a portrait of each of them in colored pencil with a small little signature at the bottom right with crystal's name. "Here, these were what I've been working on," She told them, keeping a drawing of all of them together for herself. "And my favorite music has got to be by this one group called pentatonix, they are an acapella group," she smiled at mars before packing up her belongings and heading to leave the train.

"Maniac, by Conan Gray,"

Nope. Wyatt had never heard the song before. He was quite surprised to see the castle after just 30 minutes of being in the train, but then it registered. Magical train. Mars smiled at the rest of the compartment.

"Question for the road?," they asked, "Or two, really. First, what's your favorite kind of music? Second, I heard something about a house system? What houses are you gonna choose?"

Crystal piped up. She gave her all-knowing-I-was-raised-in-a-magical-household answer about her mother and how you can’t pick your house. There is a hat that chooses for you. It looks into your brain. Wyatt’s mother had told him all about the hat and the houses. She’d told him about the four houses. Gryffindor, the brave and rowdy. Ravenclaw, the clever and strict. Hufflepuff, the loyal and naïve. Slytherin, the great and cunning.

He didn’t need to think about what house he wanted to be in. He needed to be in Slytherin. Slytherin blood was in his family for generations.

“I’m going to be in Slytherin,” he said.

The train was slowing, and out of the window, he could see the castle coming even closer. Wyatt smirked. Finally, he thought. It’d only been half an hour but it had felt like an eternity.

Crystal said her favorite band was an acapella group called Pentatonix.

He smiled as Crystal showed off her drawing, “it’s very nice.”

“I really like Rush. Canadian rock band.”

The train came to a stop, and Wyatt grabbed his bag.
“It was nice meeting you,” he said as he left.

As the train came to a juddering stop, Elodie felt all relieved, sad and excited. She was relieved to leave the compartment because, even after the apology, an air of awkwardness had remained. She hadn't met to be rude, but she had. What's done is done, Elodie thought to herself, though that didn't rid herself of any annoyance (directed at both herself and Mars). She felt sad because the compartment had also been a nice experience, especially with the girl Crystal, who had seemed very friendly. Elodie didn't have any feelings in favour to Mars, and knew too little about Wyatt to comment on him, but Crystal had been nice. It would be a shame to part from them. And, finally, Elodie also felt slightly excited. Well, excited and nervous. She was finally heading off to Hogwarts, the place of magic and wonder.

Elodie didn't have any bags to grab, as all of hers had been stored in the train, so she headed out of the compartment empty-handed. Outside, the corridor was filled with students, chatting and laughing with one another, filing out of other compartments and exiting the train. Elodie turned to the three fellow First Years she had shared the compartment, and waved. She opened her mouth, as if to say something, but changed her mind, and turned around sharply. Then, without a second look back, she descended down the stairs, off the train, and onto the platform. She was here.
