Mikey listened to Dylan as he spoke, and something about the way he said “it doesn’t feel like home” sparked a feeling in his gut. He didn’t know all the details, but he didn’t need to. That ache of being somewhere comfortable, but still wishing you were somewhere else felt familiar. Mikey chuckled softly at the rest Dylan’s story, especially the way he said burnt marshmallows with such admiration. “I feel like the burnt part is the most controversial ingredient,” he said, grinning. “But you make it sound like it has to be good. I definitely need to try those sometime.

He leaned against the tall window ledge, resting his elbow just beside where Avery stood, his jacket still draped around her. She looked comfortable in it, at ease in a way that made something flutter in his chest. He stole a quick glance her way before answering Dylan’s question. “There’s this rhythm to it,” he added, more thoughtfully now. “Like, even when the castle is unpredictable, you start to find your own flow. Classes, weird hallways, ghost. It becomes normal in the weirdest way I guess.” Then, tilting his head slightly toward Dylan “But I have to say, if your school doesn’t have talking ghost that argue with you at breakfast, you’re missing out.”

He gave them both a playful shrug and then nodded to Avery. He didn’t say anything at first, just met her eyes. A quiet warmth stirred in his chest. Not the loud, dramatic kind that stole your breath, more like finding something you didn’t know you were missing. "My friends will be ok out in the garden. I feel like I'm where I am supposed to be right now." Mikey said in response to Averys earlier question.“Besides you still need to tell us what you think of Hogwarts so far.” He asked will honest interest.

Stelle seemed to have this way of looking at him, and seeing everything. Earlier in the Grounds, now in the ballroom - both times, she’d made observations about him that were perhaps a little to close to the truth for comfort. It was something that fascinated him, but unsettled him too. Maybe he’d been onto something, maybe she really was a Seer.

She was right, of course, and Rafal felt embarrassed by it. He instinctively looked down at the floor, not wanting to meet her eyes. He felt like a coward, asking a question yet afraid of the answer. Stelle's tone was not derisive in any way, but that somehow only made him feel worse.

"But if you really want to know… I wouldn’t mind at all."

Rafal looked up again. He blinked once slowly, as if trying to register what he had just heard. Real or hypothetical? She wanted to dance with him? Stelle spoke with a clean simplicity, perhaps even bluntness, but to the Slytherin, it was the most beautiful thing he had ever heard. A grin so large it might split his face was growing. Dance! With him!

"I - really?" He haphazardly brushed through his hair with his fingers, gripping the blonde locks at the back tightly. "I mean, great! Thank you!" When she offered her hand, Rafal took it at once, as if afraid the Hufflepuff might rescind her offer.

"Yes yes, of course." he agreed quickly. Though truth be told, he wasn’t at all confident in adhering to her self-set conditions, and it was a little intimidating that Stelle had apparently been dancing for four years. Especially since Rafal's own experience was practically nil. He made a silent prayer to whatever deity oversaw bodily coordination and balance, and stepped out onto the dance floor.

Meyra felt her cheeks grow warmer and warmer as she listened to Raizel's words. Her cousin knew her too well, and it was becoming obvious that she couldn't lie to her. Was she that transparent? So easy to read? This was a little unfair and she felt embarrassed when she realised that she couldn't hide her feelings and that her expressions were too obvious to her friend. It was with a sigh of defeat that Mey looked at her cousin, with almost pleading eyes that asked for some mercy, "Fine!" She told with a resigned tone of voice, "That was not nothing. Happy?" She asked, pouting and crossing her arms over her chest. That would be all the confession Raizel would get from her, she should feel satisfied with it.

The young Gryffindor let her eyes linger at Dennis' back as she saw him leave the Great Hall, before his figure melted into the crowd and her attention was drawn away from him to the happy couple she shared a cabin with at Beauxbatons. Colin and Emmi were dancing and preparing to leave together and she kinda felt a sting of jealousy. Because to them things actually looked pretty simple, and she knew how he felt about the sweet Hufflepuff girl.

And maybe things were simple that way, and she was just not knowing how to deal with it all? Maybe it was time to put all the questions aside and try to find the answers another day, she was at a ball right? Then it was time for her to have fun with her friends! Following that line of thought, she decided to ask Raizel for a dance. Her cousin accepted her invitation with another funny remark and this time Mey replied to her with a roll of eyes and a graceful laugh, "You're not a peasant, you're my loyal knight!" She replied to her with a mocking bow.

But that funny gesture almost got her to bump into another girl. Meyra quickly straightened, and looked at her in surprise, "Oh! I'm so sorry!" She said apologetically, hearing her own words echoed by the other girl's. Meyra gave her a bright smile that reached her green eyes with a kind glow, "There's nothing to apologise for! And yes, I'm also a first year." She told her trying to reassure her that everything was alright, "You're good, even if there is a stain or two...there's nothing special about it." Meyra's smile became a little shy when she heard the compliment. Being called a princess was something that made her feel happy but she couldn't help but feel as if she didn't really deserve it, since she was far from being a princess. It was as if she were the wolf dressed in sheep's clothing. "Thank you. You also look beautiful, I love your shirt!" Meyra told her with all honesty. The girl was naturally pretty, that type of girl that everything would look amazing on her.

"Oh!" It was just then that Mey noticed the camera that Xiomara was carrying with her, between her drink and plate of food and the dim light she only noticed her camera when the girl asked if she wanted a photo, "That looks like a brilliant idea! You also like photography? It's one of my favourite hobbies." Meyra told her enthusiastically.

But before she could hear Xio's answer, her attention was once again diverted to another approaching figure. As always, her scent was the first thing she sensed, even amidst so many aromas and heightened sensory stimuli, Meyra could not help but feel her cousin arriving at the Great Hall, "Good evening Jun" She greeted her, "That colour suits you so well, you look amazing" She told her in a calm, sweet voice. Looking at her cousin she could see beyond her elegant composure, she could see the shadows lurking there, she knew, because if she gave it a moment, she would be feeling the same way. So all she wanted now was to make Jun feel better and give herself and her friends, old and new, a good memory.

"What if we take a photo of the four of us?" Meyra asked Xio first, then looked at Jun and Rai one at a time, "Common, let's register this moment, as the moment we met each other!" She cheerfully stated. "Oh! And...right." She paused, clearing her throat a little embarrassedly, "Raizel... this is Jun!" She said, looking at Rai and gesturing towards Jun, "My cousin, meet my cousin!" She ended, with a larger smile. It was a happy moment indeed when she finally got to introduce them. "And," She then looked and Xio, "I'm Meyra!" She told her with enthusiasm, "I know you are something "Xxxx", but I apologise not remembering your name!" She timidly confessed, biting her lower lip with amusement and apology dancing in her eyes.

One moment she was smiling, genuinely happy and enjoying that moment, one second later she saw the shadow looming over the entire space. What was it now? She wondered, looking up at the ceiling. There, she saw clouds forming and lightning threatening to appear along with raindrops beginning to fall. That's when she saw him, Colin McCoire, escaping through the entrance, wand still pointed, selling him as the culprit for the sudden storm. Meyra felt her temper rise at a speed that only he was capable of making arise in her. Since day one, he had been nothing but soooo annoying and inconvenient. "I can't believe it..." She muttered in dismay, feeling the drops of rain falling over her, "COLIN!!" She angrily called for him, "I swear..." she cursed, lowering her voice again and shaking her head in disapproval. Thanks Merlin tho, the storm didn't last long, as someone stopped it with another spell.

Avery couldn't stop laughing when Dylan mentioned eating a burnt marshmallow with chocolate and graham crackers and saying it was good. She had never expected him to think something like that was actually good. She had also never heard of the so-called treat, so she had no idea what it tasted like. She agreed with Mikey. The burnt marshmallow was very controversial.

"I agree with Mikey. How in the world could you like something burnt? Especially a marshmallow!" Avery began to chuckle again. She couldn't help it. It was just too funny.

Avery listened as Mikey explained the castle to Dylan. She couldn't agree more, and once he had finished talking, she took a deep breath and decided on the spot what she was going to say.

"Well, for me, Hogwarts feels like a breath of fresh air. It's a place where I can be myself without having to act like someone I'm not in front of people that want me to be something I don't want to be. I love it here. The people, the friends I've made, the. . ." Avery blushed as she glanced at Mikey. She was really enjoying his company and was glad that he had decided to stay. Though, she didn't really know what she was going to say. Did she like him that way? She wasn't sure, but she had the feeling that she did and that he might too by the way he looked at her. He was the first person to treat her kindly by choice instead of being forced because she was of pure blood. Wow. She couldn't stand that title placed on her. It made her feel trapped.

"Actually, I think my favorite part is the burnt marshmallow. Though, at first, burnt marshmallow sounded horrible, but once you try it, well, it's amazing." Dylan said as he let out a small chuckle. He knew that Avery wouldn't believe him until she tried it for herself. Maybe he would have to bring some marshmallows and burn them over a campfire in the campgrounds sometime. They needed to try them!

"Maybe next time I visit I'll bring some marshmallows to burn over a fire. Maybe I could even find some marshmallows since I guarantee someone brought some with them. Maybe we could meet up sometime before we all leave for break to roast and burn some?" He asked. Hoping that they wouldn't mind spending another night altogether.

He smiled as he listened to Avery and Mikey talk about Hogwarts. It sounded amazing and adventurous. He was sad that he couldn't share the experience with Avery. Maybe someday he would, but for now he would just have to wait and visit her whenever there was an event.

"Hogwarts sounds amazing. Maybe someday we will all share it together. But, for now, I'm loving spending tonight with you two." He smiled again.

Meyra's reaction was funny, enough to bring the entertainment that this Gryffindor seeks in this ball. Her finally admitting that what happened between her and Dennis earlier wasn't just ‘nothing’ made her laugh in her mind and somehow, she found that pouting face of hers with arms crossed kind of cute. Even more so when she heard her refer to her as a loyal knight instead of a peasant. Unfortunately, there was little to no time to tease Meyra more about those due to a couple of people arriving and as much as possible, she’d rather not embarrass her step-cousin among the presence of strangers. For her at least. As far as she knows, she doesn't know the person who bumped into Meyra nor the other one who had approached her as well but more in a friendly manner.

In that moment, there was only silence from her as she assessed the situation. She had the tendency to go quiet when in a place surrounded by strangers but because she doesn't want to butt into conversations that she wasn't a part of. All she had to do was to nod once her presence was acknowledged by a girl in a pretty dress who greeted Meyra and good evening. That was a lot better compared to a stained dress but luckily that never happened as Meyra seemed fine after the other person bumped into her. The only thing that matters is that she seemed to be enjoying this ball. That was one of the reasons why she was here in the first place, not just to keep her safe from the ball because of how they tend to go wrong but also to ensure she was having a great time. Subconsciously, her finger went to her cheek, giving the scar there a gentle touch. It was a reminder that her cousin is suffering every month from a curse that she had to bear for the rest of her life. That's what motivated her to do anything that eases the pain from it. There was no cure to it. That was the only way to help Meyra.

Guess her step-cousin was right about her. She was no peasant, she was her loyal knight and someone that shall stay by her side.

She stood up from her seat, raising an eyebrow as she looked at Meyra when she had suggested taking a photo of them four. While she was not a fan of picture taking, if it was her who requested it then perhaps she could fulfill that request of hers albeit reluctantly. She turned to face the girl whom Meyra introduced as Jun and then the other girl. “Raizel Voltrouz, at your service. Apparently, I’m Princess Meyra’s Knight.” She introduced herself with a bow before looking at her cousin with a smirk and wink before letting out a small laugh. “A remembrance never hurts anyone.”

Remember when it was mentioned that things usually tend to go wrong in balls? Well, one happened, taking the form of grayish clouds looming over the whole place. Someone just thought casting a rain cloud with a chance of lightning was a good idea. It just made Raizel shake her head and cross her arms. Hearing the name Colin doesn’t seem to be that surprising for some reason. While Raizel was prepared to blow it away, someone else had beaten her to it which was a relief at least. “Way to make the ball interesting.” She doesn’t want to get hit by a random lightning bolt though.

Mikey laughed softly at Dylan’s defense of the burnt marshmallow. “Alright,” he said, holding up both hands in surrender. “If you’re that passionate about it, I’ll try it. But only if you’re the one burning it.” He grinned, the humor gentle and warm. The kind of smile you gave people you were truly comfortable with.

As Dylan spoke about visiting again, Mikey nodded along. The idea of gathering around a fire together, laughing, trying strange sweets it painted a picture that felt a lot like home, even if the word was still taking on new shape for him. Then Avery spoke. And for a second, he forgot the rest of the room existed.

Her words weren’t loud or dramatic, but they hit stole his attention from the rest of the room “A place where I can be myself.” And when she glanced at him mid-sentence, blushing, he felt something flicker deep in his chest. He didn’t speak right away. Didn’t want to ruin it. Instead, he reached up slowly and adjusted the edge of the jacket around her shoulders brushing it just slightly, his fingers grazing hers in the smallest most accidental way. “I’m glad you’re here,” he said quietly.

He suddenly remembered that Avery had mentioned meeting with friends. As much as he was enjoying time together with just the three of them, he realized that he would also like to meet her friends. Maybe he even knew them or had at least seen them in classes or in the halls. “Where were you supposed to meet your friends Avery? Do you think they are looking for you?

"Me too." She whispered back to Mikey as a blush continued to creep across her cheeks. What was happening to her? She was always outgoing and not afraid to speak her mind, but when she was with Mikey? Well, it felt like her entire world of pain was put on hold and all that filled her mind was joy and happiness. No one had ever caused her to have that feeling before. She really enjoyed it. It gave her a sense of peace in a dark time. A light in the dark.

Avery had completely forgotten that her friends were going to meet her at the ball eventually. She hadn't seen any of them yet, so she wasn't sure where they were. She took a glance around the room and noticed Joseph was still dancing and Lya wasn't anywhere in sight yet. She hoped her best friend would be there soon. She couldn't wait to introduce her to Dylan!

"That's a great question. The Hufflepuff in the chicken suit is a friend of mine named Joseph. I'm not sure where my best friend is though. I'm guessing that she's still in the garden or somewhere in here. Her name's Lyanna." Avery commented to Mikey as she glanced around the room again.

Dylan laughed. "I guess I could show you guys how the Americans burn marshmallows. It's actually quite fun!"

Dylan smiled as he watched Mikey and Avery interact. He had never seen his cousin so lost for words. He knew that she was obviously really enjoying Mikey's company and probably had no idea what she was feeling. As much as Dylan liked to tease lovingly, she was basically a sister to him, so he made a mental note to watch out for her and Mikey. He didn't want anyone to ruin such a beautiful relationship just beginning to bloom. Even if they didn't realize it yet.

At Avery's comment about not knowing where her best friend was that he learned was named Lyanna from their letters, he was worried. She seemed worried for her friend. Dylan knew the girl was going to be fine, but it was as if something was bothering Avery about it. She must have sensed something in her friend.

He gently squeezed her shoulder before saying, "Don't worry. I'm sure she'll turn up soon, and I guarantee that she'll be excited to see you once she gets here."

He nodded his head to seal the deal. He knew that it was the only way to calm Avery down and remind her where she was and that this was supposed to be the night of her dreams.

"You wish!" Robin smirks teasingly, "If you call those moves bewitching, I think I'd better go grab a healer to fix your brain because you've clearly been jinxed."

Odette throws her head back, cackling at her friend’s humor and reveling in their fun even as raindrops splash against her face and smudge her makeup. Suddenly, twinkles of light from the candles above begin chasing away the dark storm clouds until a warm glow envelopes the room once more. Leaving nothing behind, but the lingering scent of rain.

"Oi!" Robin shouts, her Welsh accent thickening in her annoyance."Who turned the lights back on? I swear nobody ever wants to have any kind of fun around here. What's the point of a soiree if not to dance in the rain, anyway?"

Odette is only 90% sure she understood what Robin said. A few months of friendship have familiarized the blue-eyed witch with the girl’s prominent accent. The only times she gets confused now are when the curly-haired witch gets annoyed or excited, since she tends to talk too fast for Odette to translate in her head. Her friend often doesn’t even realize when slips further into her Welsh dialect and tends to look at Odette readily for her response.

Hazarding a guess as to what her friend is pouting about, the young entrepreneur smirks slyly, “Personally, I’m more partial to the money-making these things bring, but dancing in the rain is definitely a close second.”

Her words have Robin drifting off unblinkingly again. Staring down a witch in her wide-eyed, dazed concentration. Odette snorts amusedly at the stranger’s blush as she mistakes her friend’s thoughtful gaze as something far more flattering.

"Tell me, Odette. What do you say about... leaving this ball with a bang?" Robin asks dramatically, snapping out of her plotting. Lightly knocking her friend’s wiggling fingers away from her face, Odette’s bright eyes turn piercing as she meets her friend’s wicked gaze and reads the chaos laying behind her brown eyes.

“You know I’m always up for some mayhem,” Odette answers with a devilish grin, linking arms with her scheming friend as she guides her off the crowded dance floor to their table. “What did you have in mind?”

A smile slowly grows across Robin’s face, the edges a touch too sharp to be innocent. "Say we caused some havoc and split? Maybe... dung-bomb havoc, hmm? What'dya say?"

Odette lets out a barking cackle, immediately covering her mouth with her hands to squash the noise, making her nose twitch in suppressed laughter. Looking around to see if anyone heard their plotting, Odette leans in close to Robin, whispering, “I say, you’re once again, absolutely brilliant!

Nudging her friend with a grin, she continues, “But, if we’re going to do this, then we are going to do this in style! After all, I can’t have any customers knowing I ruined their evening. It’d be bad for business!

Scrummaging through the bursting coin purse tied around her wrist, Odette pulls out a Comb of Vanity and a Dazzling Barrette, slyly handing one to Robin under the table. Reminding her of muggle movies where someone subtly slips money into a person’s palm during a handshake.“Luckily for us, I thought of bringing extras in case someone had a hair disaster at the dance. I was going to sell more after the rain, but this is a much better way to use it!”

Noticing Robin’s suspicious side-eye, Odette rolls her eyes and drawls, Yes, it’s free, no, there aren’t any hidden conditions, and yes, this is a once-in-a-lifetime freebie.” That’s a lie, not that she’ll tell her that. The entrepreneur likes making money, not taking advantage of her friends! She won’t charge them for everything. Well…at least not often or at full price. That’s what friends and family discounts are for! “Consider this my apology for being late to the soiree.”

Odette watches as Robin swipes the Comb of Vanity through her beautiful ebony curls, staring wide-eyed when with one brush it smooths out until it tickles lightly at her lower back– pin-straight. The blue-eyed witch is absolutely gobsmacked at how long her friend’s hair is without her cascade of coily ringlets.

“How unfair!” Odette pouts playfully, throwing an arm around Robin’s shoulders, “You’re a total babe with curls and you’re a hottie with straight hair? Give the rest of us mortals a chance, will you?”

Fiddling with the Dazzling Barrette in her other hand, Odette considers what color to turn her hair. She already has brown locks that don't stand out in a crowd, but the point isn’t to blend in, but instead to go unrecognized. With that thought, she carefully clips it into her updo and pulls at a strand framing her face. Smiling fondly as she watches her chocolate tresses lighten into a daring ginger. Odette always wondered what she would look like with her mom’s red mane.

Turning to the straight-haired witch under her arm, she quips, “What do you think? You reckon I look as good as Karen Gillan?”
