And on that topic, what book did ygs read most recently? I just finished re-reading Pride and Prejudice for the 3rd time lol

I have been reading The Stand of Stephen King, the complete and uncut version for 2-3 weeks now. It is such a lengthy read, it's in a whopping 1,150+ pages and I am now in page 272. Normally, I eat up fanfictions as long as this but I have been annotating the whole thing so it actually slowed down the actual progress.

I’ve never actually annotated a book before but I’ve seen a bunch of cute annotations on pinterest lol- what do you usually annotate?

I recommend annotating books from now on. A drag, I know—but you will reap what you sow sooner than you think. Annotating encourages engaging with the passages and it hones your skills in memorisation and comprehension. I got conscious when I have this discussion with a friend about books we have read.

How it went:

Me: Oh yeah, I have read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald long ago. A must-read.

Friend: How was it?

I only told him the pivotal points that actually left a mark in my memory. Other than that, I could not provide a more comprehensive description for him. I just know it was good, the plot thickened and all that rubbish. Then, I took up annotating because it did bother me deeply.

Usually, I annotate the quotes I find inherently important to remember for later as the story progresses—I write down my theories; words I am not familiar with; references the authors made that I should search up for later—especially with Stephen King, the guy actually likes referencing books he had read before; paragraphs, phrases, monologues, and small actions that elicited reaction from me. A simple line of “pardon me?” could be sufficient as annotation. It does not have to be a provoking thought.

That is what I think anyway. In fanfictions, I let it all blur in my head. They are for cleansing when I am in a writing and reading slump.

That’s actually really cool! I’d love to try it sometime, because I’ve honestly had that feeling before of not remembering what I read. My only concern is that I don’t like marking up books I wish there was some sort of damage-free option, because I share all my books with family and friends
I totally agree with the fanfics, only for me it’s sappy rom-coms lol. Sometimes we need that brain cleanser to get back into it

I did not mean to send a rather large block of text! I am just passionate with annotating and I wish I could talk about it more!

I am able to annotate books without worry because I do not mind writing in the margins and litter it with words. I was like that too with my books before—I was always mindful about them because I adore them. It was just a phase for me, really; I have owned books since I was a child and I witnessed the pages yellowing out. Someday the pages will crumble and it is a depressing realisation to stumble upon. The first time I bought a second-hand book—I believe it was a copy of Uncle Tom's Cabin of Harriet Beecher Stowe—I realised that books should be well-loved in a way the humanity intended it to be.

This particular copy had bent corners, really faded pages that it almost looked like parchment, the spine which indicated that it was cracked open multiple times, and the former owner underlined some quotes for reasons unknown to me. I loved that copy, the spine told me that the former owner thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. After that observation, whenever I shop for second-hand books I check the spines if the former owner enjoyed the book. It is always a sure sign that I might enjoy it too.

From then on, I do not mind cracking a spine, folding pages, and such. I had adventures with my books before. I have books that are designated to read while in transportation, especially memoirs and journals. Although my messenger bag is heavily organised, you could not help bending a book from time to time. I cried about it before.

I like reading fan fictions but I am not really into romance. I gobble up one-shots from my favourite ships—both gay and straight—and fluffier the better. I am in so many fandoms and there are always material to read from, especially from Ao3. In Harry Potter, it feels like there are so little who ships both Luna and Harry. I have, like, two to three on-going fluffy fics of them and I wait impatiently for updates.
